    Wow. Initially, I thought that my critical but last second visit to the DOL was turning out to be just like every stand-up routine and stereotype about DOL/DMV. The lady that I first encountered (let's pretend her name is Gertrude) was one of the coldest, most un-empathetic people that I have literally, ever met. Despite describing the story of how my car was stolen to her, and explaining that they stole my plates so I couldn't commute to work if I did not get the plates that night (it was 5:15, they close at 5:30), she treated me with the worst customer experience I have ever encountered. I had not yet transferred the title from my mother to myself despite my name being on the registration I was worried my mother would likely have to be there. Though originally saying her presence wasn't necessary, leading to my telling her not to come, Gertrude suddenly insisted that she had to be present for the renewal to occur. This created a very awkward situation where I had to call her again for the second time in 5 minutes and say "Nevermind, I do I'm fact need you to leave her work early (she's a nurse) and get down here from the Issaquah Highlands in 10 minutes or less." Without warrant, she got more and more aggressive and threatening that if she got there at 5:29 she wouldn't do it. My mother was frantically calling saying that she would barley make it, when Gertrude heard this call, she got up from her desk and walked into the back so that she wouldn't be there until they "closed" as Gertrude reminded me ten times. So is the five stars an accident then? No. One standout employee changed the entire night, overriding the entirety of Gertrude's terrible treatment of us. Ashlyn (not her real name but very close, for management) saw my mother running to the door in scrubs at 5:29 and despite here having being ready to go home at 5:30 she kindly, with a heartfelt smile turned her computer back on and eased us through the entire process. She recommended the relevant forms and expediently filled them out with us while crossing every t and dotting every i. She made the night and deserves recognition. Thank you Ashly(n). You didn't have to go above and beyond but you did so anyway and that means a lot.

I went in & out of the site several times trying to figure out if I was doing something wrong (I wasn't - a friend had the same problem yesterday.) and then it locked me out. Today (7/10) I arrived at the office a 1/2 hour before it opened and was 10th in line. However, an employee came out & said we needed to hold our phones up to a barcode and check in. I was still locked out and couldn't check in. This employee was pleasant but there was only 1 of her and dozens of people who needed help. About 50 people who came after me were served before I could get checked in and the woman inside at the first chair to check people in was totally, absolutely nasty. She told me my appt wasn't confirmed (pretty sure she spelled my name wrong) and to go back to the other woman (although there was no one in line behind me and she could have helped me). While waiting in line yet again I found the code I needed and went back to show it to the nasty woman. She didn't speak to me at all until I pointedly asked my status & she snarled I was confirmed. (It may have been a racial thing.) I then asked her several times if they would call my name or notify me it was my turn on my phone and she snarled at me, refused to answer me and eventually told me to go ask the other woman who had more than a dozen people in line. The woman who had started out nice was then very condescending and said they "wouldn't not call me name." Actually, they don't call your name and there's a confusing reader board that says they are "serving" people they are not serving on one side of the board and on the other side of the board your number will flash for a second and then leave the screen. It was horrible and ridiculous! It was much better when you went, got a # and were called when it was your turn. The woman at the first carrel who tested my eyes and did the paperwork was the exception and was very pleasant.

We got there right at opening (8:30 am) on a Friday and were told we could not just wait if we wanted to, we had to have an appt. But we learned that they release new day-of appointment times each morning so we were able to get an appt for later in the afternoon. I came to get a new license after moving to WA from out of state. My appt was at 1:15, I checked in around 1:05, and I believe I left by around 1:30 pm. They didn't actually look at any of the documents I brought with proof of my new address in WA. I wasn't able to transfer my Cali "RealID" to a WA "enhanced ID" unfortunately; so if you need that, make sure you bring a passport or birth certificate (NOT social security card). ALSO BRING CASH OR CHECK if you want to save yourself fees associated with using card (even debit card.) It was clean and quiet inside with ample seating.

After getting my number I was called up to get processed after about one minute. It took about 4 minutes to get processed, my photo taken, and issued a temporary driver license. I found the staff to be very welcoming and friendly.

The other slots all with the same person being helped until my turn came up. I waited around 15 minutes and hoped I would get my tabs before they closed for the day. Then a few windows opened up, all at the same time. The customers that had been getting helped for 20 minutes or more got processed. My turn at last! But when I walked up, the worker at the window helping me decides to yell out "anyone else here just for tabs? I can do both of you at once. It will be quick!" So she can help the woman who got in line after me, and I get to have a stranger standing 1 inch from me. I have no idea why. There were several windows now open, and only 1 in line behind me. While I had to remove all the credit cards from my wallet to get the drivers license out. I hope she didn't grab one, she was certainly close enough to. Leaning over the top of me because I had been standing in front of the window. From there - the employee ordered me to sign the registration - I need to do that to get the tabs? Never happened before - I've always just signed at home. She saw me hesitate and then asks me "Don't you know where to sign?" Yes, I know. I am just baffled as to why I need to do this now. She did not miss one chance to offer a snide reply to me, yet just handed the form to the person she had come up to join me in line. Did not order her to sign the registration. Offered nothing rude, just smiled and gave her her tabs. In hindsight I should have just told this worker I would wait for the next window. Perhaps she doesn't like people who are not Caucasian? I don't know what else could have generated this odd & negative response from her. I've never had a complaint about this licensing office before - but after this I'm sure any other place offering tabs would be just as good and more than likely better.

They're super fast and efficient despite being in one of the most densely populated neighborhoods of the region. And the employees are nice and genuinely seem to like each other and not hate their jobs, probably because they aren't dealing with grouchy customers who've been waiting for hours all the time. They don't do appointments here as far as I know, but honestly you don't really need one. Longest I've waited in line is about 30 minutes, and it's usually less than that (granted, I've only ever come on a week day). They do title boats here and they also do the "quick" titles. The office is also really nicely decorated. Weird, I know. They've got loads of local artwork as well as some fun local seattle sports memorabilia. Makes what would otherwise be a boring 1970s office space kind of fun to look at. For getting there, it's easiest to enter through the parking lot side on 56th, rather than the Market side. The parking lot has a few designated spots for 30 min of free parking, paid after that. I think it's a Diamond lot (saw 2 parking patrollers in the blue Diamond jackets), so you're probably better off paying for Seattle city street parking or going a few blocks north for free street parking and walking.

    I have lived in many states, and have had negative experiences with privatized tag agencies…read moreelsewhere. I was relieved to find this process straightforward and relatively painless. The process here seemed quite effecient. (it is odd that in Washington, the actual state DMV offices do driver licenses, but you have to go to private tag agencies for tags...or tabs...whatever we call them here) Everyone here was friendly. The line was out the door in the a.m. on a Sat., but it moved along pretty quickly. Please do everyone a favor and do as much research as you can before showing up. And just be cool while you wait. Bring your best energy. We're all in this together, people. No joke, there was a guy ahead of me who was selling like 2 boats and a motorcycle the next day ( a Sunday) and he couldn't find the titles...and he was making it their problem. Seriously, dude? Eariler in the week, I called ahead to get an estimate on what I needed to pay. I did as much research online as I could also. A real person answered the phone and gave me a pretty high number. They quoted a vehicle with a higher trim level than mine, just to be on the safe side. If I recall, I kinda got a little prickly on the phone because Washington taxes you on the value of your vehicle (excise tax), even though you paid for it already a long time ago. What the hell? it's basically as sales tax you pay over and over again. Doesn't matter what you call it. Even though I was noticeably irritated, the person at Rainier was cool about it and didn't push back, which is the usual response in any other context. I brought cash, which seems to be the way to go. I've heard there is an extra charge for credit cards ( but don't know that for a fact). I ended up paying less than what they estimated earlier. in conclusion, do the research, call ahead if you have questions, go on Sat. a.m., and chillax while you wait. The kind and professional folks at Rainier Vehicle and Vessel Licensing will take care of you. Just remember...it could be much, much worse.
