Skied 12/29/2016. Hill is great and staff is friendly, however the Lodge facilities and management are seriously lacking. Unorganized staff and lack of attention to detail. Simple things like no toilet paper on the stalls, napkin holders with no napkins, coffee bar with no cream and an empty pastry display case at 8:30am, stale crackers for chili and registers in the front deck food vender that didn't work. At $149 a day, the owners of this resort should be ashamed of charging a premium price for this ski hill and not providing premium service and food. read more

After a week of fresh powder blanketing the beautiful slopes of tahoe, I was lucky enough to hit up the slopes post storm. Riding 'skill': I snowboard frequently, but I would not say I'm an expert. I would say I am intermediate as I can carve and what not, but I prefer not to shred on the black diamonds. Love to jam on the blues Ok, enough about me. Alpine Meadows. First time to this resort and it was an okay experience: +1 free shuttle service that picks you up if you park in the overflow parking. In reality this is better so you don't have to walk that much =P. Staff is also friendly +1 many many lifts. A lot of runs were blue runs, but we got there late and were with some newbies so I was only able to hit up Summit, Roundhouse, and Weasel trail and one other run. +1 chair lifts were friendly. This pertains to the operators and the actual lifts. The chairs slow down for you to get on and off unlike dodge ridge which just launches you off. -1 The runs were pretty decent, but not that attractive even with all the powder. Summit's initial drop was beautifully powdered, but I was not used to carving through moguls. Endless moguls at that. I tumbled down a lot, but it was still fun since it felt like I was just rolling in clouds. Also, the view at the top is gorgeous! -1 chair lifts were kind of slow There were a few flat parts on some of the runs that required you to maintain your speed or you would get stuck. I would say many runs catered to skiers more. In sum, I didn't have the greatest experience even though it was fresh powder. The runs didn't feel solid and fulfilling to me. Regardless, I love the snow and it was fun. Don't ever pay full price, grab the shell ski free (bogo) deal, or go somewhere to get cheaper tix. Honorable mention: the amenities and technologies were nice and probably why the price is higher. They had a map of the mountain that lit up letting you know which runs were open and the lifts used RFID chips located in your lift ticket to let you through. Unnecessary but fancy. read more

I was originally supposed to go to Kirkwood but they had a fire so the skibus got routed to Alpine instead. I didn't know what to expect. As I walked off the bus(ticket in hand) the staff members were all very pleasant and asked if I needed to assistance or if I needed information. I thought, wow! not bad! I had originally planned on taking private lessons at Kirkwood so I hoped that Alpine had something available. My friend and I were booked for a 3 hour lesson for $315. Split that between another person and that's not so bad. I was very hesitant because my previous experience with lessons did not go well at all. We got our 3 hour lesson booked and met with instructor Bill. I really didn't know what to expect. He was very nice and asked a few questions. He looked at our boards and quickly figured out that we were configured incorrectly. The fact that he took the time to look at the problem and fixed it is a HUGE plus. That was a great start to the day. We went through the lesson and he was very good at explaining how the body should be positioned and took it step by step with us. He never once pushed us too fast. He made sure that we BOTH got equal time and for the first time I actually was able to stay vertical on a board for more than 30 ft. The lessons were so great that we extended an extra hour. Food was decent but on the pricier side. Of course I didn't really cringe too much because it was expected. My overall experience at Alpine was great and I'd definitely come back. read more

I had very bad experience with one of Alpine Meadow's ski coaches recently. It was on 12.26. I took a full- day group ski lesson. There were 2 more people in my group. I was at quite the beginning level, I used to ski only for 2 days in my life (by myself) before that lesson. The only hill that I had an experience skiing on before this lesson was the easiest one: Subway. I could stop more or less (if speed is not so high) and ski with pizza technique, no parallel turns and still far from it. I told the coach about that and he saw it by looking at how I am skiing. We went to Meadows hill right away. It was fine, I managed to go down without falling, but it was really hard for me, only with pizza style. Then we went up the Meadows hill one more time and he said that I have to practice parallel turns, explained how to do it verbally and I went down. I have not succeeded to do it using parallel turns technique, fell down several times, because I tried to use parallel turns, not pizza this time, and I did not quite understand how to do it. So I really have not realized how to do parallel turns and of course I needed more practice. Then we went to the same hill, Meadows, I think 2 more times in order to practice it again. I went down all by myself, without opportunity to follow the coach, to follow his explanations and warnings how to go down, nothing, he just said to go down by myself and just to practice parallel turns by myself. Thats ok. I fell down of course several times, but it was fine, because Meadows hill is not so high and I understand that in order to learn something I have to try many times. I still was very far from doing parallel turns etc. After the second attempt on Meadows hill, he said that now we will go to Hot Wheels. I said several times that I am afraid to go there, I feel that I am not quite ready for that and that I really need some more practice with parallel turns and stopping, but he said: don't worry, it is gonna be fine. So we went up the hill. I thought that he will give me detailed instructions before we start, that I will go right after him, that he will show me the best ways to go and where is easier to turn, that after several turns he will stop waiting for me and giving instructions again and showing which way exactly we will go now and where we will turn. But nothing of that has been done. He just said: do your best to reach the bottom of the hill, just try not to take a fall and that is it. "Now go!" And I went down completely by myself, without any help from his side. Ohh I think I was really lucky not breaking any bones or something like that. I was laying in the snow more that I was standing in vertical position. I had so many awful and really dangerous falls, I was like a blind kitten not knowing where to go in order to turn and how to go down at all at the hardest parts of the hill. I thought I would never reach the bottom, at least alive. It was awful. On the next day I could hardly stand up from bed, my body was so much in pain. I do not think it is the right way to work with people as this coach did. After I came home I contacted their manager, Kevin Klein, and explained him the situation. However, he just said that he agrees that it is not the right away to work. He even has not offered to return money, as of course he should have done. I was lucky not to get into the hospital with such coach. Also the manager did not give me his name (I asked for that because I wanted to share it here). read more

Just bought tickets for a half day for $114 at 11:45 with 6 lifts open. We had to wait until 12:30 for our tickets to activate. At 12:30 we went to get on a lift and all but one was closed because of the wind. We hadn't been on 1 lift and asked to please get our money back and they refused. Our day passes verify we have not been on one lift yet we still have to pay $228 for absolutely nothing. They blamed us for coming in bad weather! We are from out of town so this was the only time we could come. I understand policies but sometimes there should be room for common sense and good customer service. We obviously will never be back to this resort and would recommend to anyone to steer clear and go somewhere where they care more about their customers then an extra $228. read more

We love this mountain and ski resort. Our first time was back in 2016/17 season. We started at Squaw, which is a great mountain, but for kids I think it can be overwhelming because it's a wide open bowl. So I brought the kids over here to Alpine and it was perfect. Lots of cat tracks and corduroys and tons of trees, it's not so overwhelming and the kids had so much fun. Last year, the snow came late in the season and we were there in early December. We ended up on a steep, icy run and I had a ski nanny with me at the end of the day. I wanted to get one last run in, but the sun was on the other side leaving this run in the shade and a bit icy. The ski staff all get together and have a meeting of some sort on the mountain and happen to be on that run. I was having a difficult time helping my son (5) to get up from a fall. Suddenly, two guys ski down and offer their help to my son. One skied backwards and had my son held his fists and the other skied behind them. They not only helped him down, but gave him personal instruction down the mountain. It was so cool. Another staff member helped my other son (4) down too. I was amazed. We lucked out with the IKON pass as now we get to ski Squaw/Alpine and Mammoth now. We can't wait for the snow this season. The food is great. They actually have really good quality, natural beef for their burgers, which I am particular about because I am an nutritionist and a real stickler for organic, grass fed, sustainable ingredients. They are not all that yet, but gives me hope that they could be in the near future. We have spent the last 5 years in South Lake skiing Heavenly, Kirkwood and Sierra. We love Sierra and prefer Kirkwood over Heavenly any day. In fact, I'm not a fan of Heavenly at all. But over the years, we have gravitated North to Squaw and Alpine and finally we have committed to North Tahoe/Truckee area. Fits our style perfectly. Supposedly, they are putting in a gondola that will connect Squaw and Alpine together. I'm excited for that. read more

Our new favorite spot.....so much so that we are now season pass holders! We loved that it wasn't overcrowded the days leading up to Christmas and just stays low key pretty much all season. I took an all day snowboarding lesson and it turned out to be the best lesson I've had yet (tried heavenly, northstar, and some others.....). I say the proof is in the fact that I can traverse, do turns, and transition easily all the way down the Mountain! I also like this joint cause they have KOBE burgers and Peet's coffee in the cafe! read more

Came down from Truckee in the middle of a blizzard. Our car slid straight through the intersection for Squaw and we ended up at Alpine. So glad we did. A gnarly mountain. Never waited more than 2 minutes for a lift and the terrain was unreal. Early on we found some really challenging terrain on Scott lift. After a quick pit stop for a beer and bratwurst at The Chalet, I split off and found some great gulch runs through the trees. It was basically my own mountain. Every single person I met on the lifts was friendly. Highly recommend. read more

small and big at the same time. small in that the lifts are all so close to each other and i feel like i can cover the whole mountain in half a day. and it's almost all blue which sucks for everyone else. oh wait, they actually have a backside of the mountain with more blues and blacks! ugh, i totally missed that side. probably would have been less crowded on that side. oh well. and big. the main lodge is huge. with doors everywhere for all sorts of stuff. they even have extra restaurants scattered around the mountain. how are you supposed to find people there?? prices are decent and it's fairly easy to get to. read more

We were happy to see how much our kids (5, 6) enjoyed 2 full days of ski school. They have been on skis and snowboards casually with us pulling them up a small hill but this was their first ski school experience. It was great. The school had a warm reception so the kids felt comfortable up front. They fitted them with skis/boots, fed them lunch, gave them skill-appropriate lessons, and finished up with hot cocoa and popcorn. What else could a kid and parent ask for? The pick up process could be better as it was chaotic when all the parents arrived to pick up the kids. Another important note, the instructors were friendly, enthusiastic and talked to us about how the kids did on the slopes / lifts and gave us mini-progress report to take. Look forward to going back this season! read more

I do like skiing the mountain, but since it was taken over by Squaw Valley the customer service has gone the way of, yes, Squaw Valley. The lift operators are too busy talking to each other to assist or interact with skiers. We had one lift operator who was friendly in the entire day of skiing. For some reason, Squaw management doesn't consider a friendly atmosphere to be part of a recreational experience. It is a reason I find Sierra at Tahoe, Sugar Bowl or Whistler to be far superior. read more

I returned to Alpine for the first time since I was a kid. I had always remembered it as a huge resort on par with Squaw Valley. My reaction this time was that it felt surprisingly small, and I only found a couple of chairs worth skiing. Sure, it was nice, but it wasn't all that. We got a private leson. Lonnie was awesome! She deserves 5 stars She was so helpful teaching us techniques and improved oye skiing to making so much more enjoyable. The resort could use an update and be more accomodating to nursing mothers. I had to pump in the car. So sad. Caitlyn and Emily at the Yellow lift are great! They have such positive, cheerful personalities that it was such a joy to talk with them, and we got some great encouragement and tips for our young one who is learning to ski. Plus, you have to check out their snow castle that they built! It's really something! The atmosphere at Alpine feels more family friendly and kid friendly than other nearby ski resorts. When I come to the slopes with young ones, I am not here to strut my latest winter wear fashion. Nor impress with my or the kids' snow "moves". I just want a warm and encouraging feeling to help my kid feel safe its ok to fall, get up, and try again. Exactly the message Emily and Caitlyn conveyed. In the era of pretentious ski resorts with mega-faux-villages and valet parking, Alpine Meadows offers the old-school family friendly vibe. My wife and I go 20+ days/year here, taking turns skiing and watching our 2 kids under 2 in the lodge. It is a safe and comfortable place to hang out with kids. We also LOVE the skiing here - it is one of the last places with massive hiking-accessible in-bounds terrain - where if you try hard enough you can usually get to some fresh tracks and solitude. Even after 30 years of skiing here, the varied terrain makes each day an adventure. read more

One of the lesser known ski resorts, which makes it not as crowded... well at least when all their lifts are open. The day we went here it was REALLY windy... yes ice pellets to the face... nose so numb that you don't even feel it when it's got snot dripping out of it. Which in turn means that only 2 lifts stay open all day... BOOOOOOOO! But the runs are really fun!!! great variety on types of runs they have, which was perfect since we were all at different levels. Great also for traversing and hiking to parts that are unreachable from the lift. The food here is mediocre... but there are some CUTIES that ride this mountain ;) read more

What makes Alpine Meadows great is the side country. The bummer is that it's been decided to take the primary route down the mountain and make it a giant jump park. This would be OK if anyone used it but the jumps are made for only the elite. Oh, the people that ski Alpine are great too! read more

I effing love Alpine Meadows! It is definitely my favorite resort in Tahoe, partially cuz I have a cabin like half a mile away, but mainly cuz it's totally kick ass! Great mountain for boarding (and skiing) cuz there aren't too many flat areas; there are a couple but once you know about them you can usually get through if you keep your speed up. The jumps aren't too great, so if you're into that you might be disappointed, but I'm not so it's all good to me! They have awesome beer on tap, including Gordon Biersch WinterBock at the Chalet. Cheapest lift ticket you will find in Tahoe, and even when it's crowded it doesn't feel that crowded cuz the lines never get too huge for the lifts. And if it is crowded, hit up the backside, always a lot quieter back thurr! read more

Could be my new favorite ski resort. Conditions were particularly awesome and powdery over Christmas, so this is where we chose to go, mostly because we were able to pick up some discount lift tickets in advance from REI. I was surprised to find that Alpine was not particularly crowded for a holiday weekend, we never even really had to wait in lines for the lifts. I really enjoyed the small, manageable size of Alpine's terrain. Made it easy to ski with a group and still keep track of everyone throughout the day. Also, there was enough variety to keep me (a lowly slowpoke intermediate) and my boyfriend (an expert speed-demon daredevil kind of guy) pretty content for a couple of days. Maybe I just got spoiled by the super awesome conditions (hooray for fresh powder) but this place seriously rocked. You know what also rocked? Lunch at the lodge. We got two hot dogs, chili fries (with enough extra chili to pile some on top of our dogs...) and drinks for just under $20. A total deal for lunch for two people. And the chili was awesome, totally homemade, and kept us warm and happy for the rest of the day. As if this isn't enough, the staff is friendly and there's free Ricola throughout the resort. They need to work on their transportation ops. I waited for an hour for the shuttle from Deer Park lot after going nearly to the main lot b4 finding out main lot full. Overall time wasted=2 hours for two hours of skiing on big snow day. read more

Great for beginners (like me) -- $80 for a lift ticket, rental and lesson. They have a separate lift area just for beginners (so it's not crowded) which I find to be really helpful when you're just learning. Not a lot of amenities, but great prices! read more

Alpine Meadows is our favorite among Squaw and Northstar! All levels of terrain, great steeps, easy access from parking lot to lift, facilities are recently updated and quite nice, appeared to have free WiFi with all the computers I saw. Good mix between a skier's mountain and family mountain. read more

Had a great time skiing here! The green runs are easy and fairly short, a good warm-up if you're a little tentative. The blues seemed easier than blue runs at bigger resorts, like Heavenly and Mammoth, but were perfect for improving technique without being scared. Very beautiful and not too crowded, I can't wait to go back. read more

The skiing and terrain here is great. I'm not going to go into detail here on most aspects of the resort, except to say that in most respects Alpine Meadows is a great place to ski. However, they seem to be completely incompetent when it comes to traffic management. I understand the need for avalanche control, and if it's done at 8:30 when the road is full of customers trying to get in, I have no doubt it's for good reason. What's not okay is letting cars continue to try to enter the road and just sit there, stuck, for an hour plus with no mention of why the traffic isn't moving. Knowing what's going on with traffic on the access road is not common sense, despite the claims of the one, rather rude employee I eventually encountered managing traffic. (I'm sure it's a little annoying telling every car that comes up to turn around, but how hard would it be to send someone down the long line of cars explaining what's going on rather then waiting for them to come to you, slowly, one at a time, with drivers already annoyed due to the lack of information.) For all I know there's just a car stuck around the next corner and traffic will be moving soon. It's completely inexcusable that they don't start warning traffic entering the access road that the road will be closed at least 15-20 minutes before doing so (unless the closure is unplanned) and continue warning traffic of the current state of the road until it's clear. Sure it's kind of obvious when traffic is backed up on to 89, but when traffic stops half way up the road, how do you expect the hundreds of people already on the road to know what's going on. With some warning, I could have easily spent the morning skiing elsewhere rather than stuck on Alpine Meadows Road. read more

Cheaper alternative to Northstar. Not as crowded and fairly long runs. If I ever considered getting a season pass it would be for Alpine Meadows. I haven't skied here since 08/09 season but I'm sure it's the same. TIP: Most Bay Area Costcos sell a twin pack of tix for about $110. read more

Alpine Meadows is an awesome ski resort for skiers and snowboarders if they like to traverse (but that can be avoided). I am a skier, and I absolutely love this resort. My reasoning is as follows: --Lots of hike-to and non-lift-accessed terrain for your enjoyment, which means you can find untracked lines relatively late in the day. --Scott chair and Promised Land. Need I say more? --This resort is perfect for the advanced skier, which means I love it that much more. --There isn't a lot of unnecessary development going on, which means AM gets an excellent "sustainable slopes" grade. --I'm getting married here in August of '09 :-) --I had my first date here with my fiance in '04 :-) --It's beautiful with excellent views, but frankly if you're charging down the slopes due to the consistently great snow, you don't care about stuff like "the views are great!" --Most of the skiers and boarders there are intermediate to expert level, which means that you don't get a lot of gapers in your way. If you find that a lot of beginning-intermediate level skiers are skiing a run you want to do, there are plenty of other options for the advanced-expert level skier to explore! --The resort is huge considering they have an open boundary policy. Know how to use your avie equipment though! --Even if you do have a husband or wife who sucks at skiing, you can still drop them off at the bar upstairs in the main lodge for their enjoyment, or tell them to meet you later on the sunny deck with a drink in hand. Let's just hope the new owners will keep AM in the same condition, without building a sh*t-ton of new development, in order to keep the same low-key vibe they have going on now. If they decide to f--- that up, you can bet I'll be changing this review. read more

I spent the past Saturday and Sunday at Alpine Meadows boarding both days. After Saturday, I had a laundry list of small complaints that were pushing me toward a 3 star or less review: only the lifts with gates had clocks (and those were easy to miss), trails were not well marked, there was no proof-of-purchase for your lift "card" in the event that you lost it.. It was just a bunch of small things that would have been relatively cheap for Alpine to fix. Sunday redeemed the mountain though. Since there wasn't much fresh snow Saturday night, I had expectations pretty low. They must have magical groomers though, because the snow on Sunday was much better than on Saturday! The back side of the mountain was a brilliant, happy place: lots of trees to play in, quick lifts, and decent sized runs. Alpine is really a resort that you have to spend two days at. The first day, you find all the crappy popular stuff. The second day, you find the hidden gems (there are at least 3 AWESOME gullies hidden in the trees). Apparently this year, it was also the official practice mountain of the Jamaican Olympic ski team. Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! read more

Mostly straight but steep intermediate runs here at Alpine Meadows. Beginner trails are very limited. I've been here only once and honestly, I didn't enjoy it very much. I remember it was icy and it was one of the last resorts to remain open in the spring...maybe that's why. From my experience, this place is really laid back and nice. The people are nice and so are the employees. I would visit again but probably do it in the middle of winter and not when the snow is partially melting. read more

I love Alpine. I've been riding these lifts since I was barely tall enough to get on them. Great instructors, great terrain, fun for the whole family. Heck, even the food is great! The ski and snowboard teams are fantastic programs as well. They emphasize fun and enjoyment of the sport instead of competition. And the Condos located just below the parking lot are a great place to stay for the winter vacations. Great family atmosphere overall. read more

Don't believe the hype--they have little snow. Lake view is closed, Summit us closed. $92 to ski Roundhouse and Scotty. Boring after about 2 hours. Food service is limited, all but 1 station was closed. $7 veggie wrap was a quarter of an old bag salad haphazardly dumped into a soggy tortilla. Men's bathroom has that stanly ring of muck in each toilet. Save your pennies and avoid. read more
