Let me just start by saying Alpine Meadows terrain isn't catered to the beginner skier or rider. I loved this resort as a skier last season and even more so now as snowboarder. I capped my first season of snowboarding here on a POW day and I swear I felt like I was floating in the clouds of heaven. The terrain on the Summit Express is marvelous no matter where you start - go left? big giant bowl. go right? another big giant bowl..go further right? a pimp-ass avalanche gulley that ripe with sugary puff! Some of the most Epic terrain here is only accessible by doing a little bit of hiking - fine with me cause it's a deterrent to groomer rats and more fresh lines for me :0 The five stars are deserved only for the terrain and quality of riding. I could knock a few on the lack of parking (during busy days) or the sub-par lodge/food service/menu items but I'm not here for that and this ain't a Vail resort...I'm here for the ride and for that, it's amazing. read more

My bf did all of the research before purchasing the discounted lift tix at The Sports Basement ($49/adult lift ticket instead of regular price of $58) in the Presidio. Our requirements were quite simple: 1) enough intermediate runs to keep the bf happy 2) a couple of green runs, which would help me practice 3) UNCROWDED Alpine Meadows did meet these three basic criteria, which is why I had to give at least 2 stars. The equipment rental was fairly reasonably priced at approximately $40.00 day. If you plan on keeping your equipment for multiple days, you will pay $40.00 for the first day of rental and 1/2 day rental price for each following day (~$35.00). The reception staff were friendly and inviting, but, I must record here that it took several attempts by the equipment staff to assist me in adjusting the skis so that my boots would lock into the skis. Plus, the boots were an improper fit (too tight in the cuff and roomy in the toe box) and now I have skiers' toe!!! (Not Alpine's fault, by any means...just a warning that rental equipment may not fit all feet). My opinion is that this place is for TRUE BEGINNERS to learn and for EXPERIENCED skiers to enjoy the runs. I tried the two green runs that were operating on Friday, 11 Jan 2007. For the most part, they were short and sweet. They helped me remember and practice the basics. Yet, one complaint, the runs may not be challenging enough for someone that is "in between" a beginner and intermediate. Also, the snow was quite "cakey", in my opinion. Unfortunately, I can speak from experience that the intermediate runs at this resort are quite challenging. They defintiely are not for those that are "in between". There weren't many people there on Friday and the lines were quite reasonable for both equipment rental and the lifts. Yet, overall, I would not want to go back anytime soon. At least not until I've developed enough skill to conquer the terrain. read more

After skiing/riding Northstar with a season pass for almost a decade, it was time to try out a resort without the pretense. Alpine is true to the sport: you park 100 yards away from the entrance, and walk right up to the lift; no gondola, no Ritz Carlton, no ice rink. I haven't explored the hiking that makes Alpine famous, but it's an additional bonus that really isn't offered in other resorts. The only downside for potential park rats is that the Alpine park is non-existent or not as good as other resorts. read more

This is the best place for your money. It's got a good vertical, lots of challenging runs, and it's not too crowded. Usually the second cheapest place (after Boreal), I think you can't get much better than this in all of Tahoe. Dunno if it's intentional, but I don't see many advertisements, but only hear about it through word-of-mouth. My fave place to hit during the winter season. I remember when it was only skiers going down the runs and then as boarding became more popular and other resorts were letting boarders in, Alpine finally gave in and opened it up to boarders (which is fine, since I'm on my 3rd year of learning how to board). I really think Alpine Meadows deserves 4.5 stars. I really like their runs, their views, the lodge, and the value. Alpine Meadows is usually my first choice for snowboarding. Unless I'm travelling way out of the way, I'm stuck due to snow, or am with a group going elsewhere, I will always try to make it to Alpine. The parking is relatively easy as well. I really prefer it much more than the overcrowded South Tahoe area/resorts. I think Alpine is great for everyone from beginners to experts, which usually means great news for intermediates like myself. I hope I can make it up there at least once this season! read more

Lots of room to yourself, which was important for me, because I spent more time on my face or my back than I did up on my snowboard. The beginner slopes are really easy, and there were 0 lines. Had I been skiing, I would have been in heaven, as it was, I was snowboarding and ended up... cold... sore... grinning. I'd like to give a nod to their nurse at the first aid station, he patched my wrist up good with an awesome splint job. The lodge here rocks, clean, huge, WARM... the food is priced for San Francisco though, which sucks. $13.50 for a caesar salad, an apple, and two bottles of water. All in all, an awesome place. Fun mountain with terrain that still scares me, which I need. I have a pass to Squaw too but almost always end up here. Fast lifts and friendly staff. Never a wait except powder days if other lifts are closed. Amazing grooming and they have steep incline grooming machines so no ice on steep runs. New Tree Line lift makes the resort legit now as it connects to Sherwood. I would give 5 stars if it weren't for the lodge and food, on busy days where it is snowing there is no where to sit as they don't patrol people camping out at tables. Also the food is just crappy burgers and fries and wayyyy overpriced. Need a new menu. I usually don't eat there for this reason. Rather be out taking runs anyway. read more

Visited Alpine last month when I was up in Tahoe. This has become of my favorite resorts. The lift tickets are very cheap and the conditions were awesome. There were virtually no crowds on the lifts. This isn't a great freestyle park, as there are only 3 small freestyle sections but for freeriding, this is great. The best runs are Alpine bowl and Wolverine bowl on the top. Wide open and powdery soft conditions! Lakeview chair also has killer views and photo opportunities. I will definitely be coming back here in the future. read more

One of the best places to ski in Tahoe! The summit chair takes you right to the top with two fantastic bowls to go down. A few years back Alpine dropped lift prices, Go Alpine! They have an awesome backside and stop by the Alpine Bar for a beer. Very laid back mountain and the place isn't overran by boarders. I guess I was trying to think about cool places during this heat and Alpine came to mind and I thought would put a yelp out there for them! read more

Ski patrol pulled my pass on Sunday after I had supposedly crossed through an "out of bounds" boundary that was NOT roped off, barricaded or snow fenced to let people know of the danger. The one and only sign posted at the top of the run was placed directly in front of a cliff to keep people from going over the bare rocks. There was NO other signage farther down the mountain where I had dropped in. Once I got down the mountain, Adam, who was part of the ski patrol team, proceeded to tell me I had disobeyed the signage posted and that I was to give him my day pass that I had paid $169 for and only gotten five runs in at that point. I tried pleading my case, but he was very rude and even chuckled at the fact that I had fallen several times during my run. Needless to say, I was beyond upset and did not appreciate Adam or the way the ski patrol team at Alpine Meadows handled this situation. If they are seriously concerned about the dangers of the area I had boarded down, why was there not a better effort put forth to stop people from going through that area? And the no warning policy??? People are paying $169 for a DAY PASS!!! Unbelievable. This is an overpriced, overrated, and DANGEROUS mountain. Beware of the ski patrol team, they lack social skills and are lazy about safety. read more

A great, low-key alternative to Squaw, but still not nearly as divey as Boreal or Donner Ski Ranch. I had a great time here just going up and down the Hot Wheels Chair. Unfortunately I came during a big dry spell, and the snow was awful. I then made the mistake of attempting to go down Ray's Rut to the Sherwood Chair. It was an hour of hellish traversing over flat & NARROW trails of ice (and at times, dirt) that pretty much wiped me out for the day. I also tried out the Scott Ridge Run; but the extra wind up there made the ground absolute crust. Still, in good weather I could have a classic day here. Insider's tip: have lunch at the little Chalet halfway up the Hot Wheels chair. It's got that intimate cozy feel that you just can't beat (best to get there a little early to beat the crowds though). read more

I had a decent half-day at Alpine recently, even though snow conditions in Tahoe right now are really nothing to write home about. The mountain came highly recommended by a friend of mine who lives up there, and given that it was a good $25 cheaper than Northstar, I was pretty pleased. We ended up riding the full mountain mostly - take a lift all the way up, then come all the way down, then repeat. It's a long-enough run, and for whatever reasons the lift lines were completely reasonable. I really enjoyed the bowls at the very top; they made for some fun, fast, steep runs. read more

My favorite resort. When I was a kid I used to get pulled over here by the patrol for speeding, but it was all good. They always let me go. Its my 16th season boarding and Alpine's the tits, but the other Sam P is right, its not a beginner snowboarders mountain unless you're willing to go hard. You are in for a hike. Try the runs off Scott chair when its open and the Ridge. Its got good spots for cornice drops. Rock on. read more

I like Alpine more than Northstar and Squaw. I'm not a big fan of the swanky, complicated ski resort where it takes about 15 minutes to figure out how to get from the parking lot to the actual resort. Alpine is simple; walk up the hill from the parking lot and boom you can get on a lift and go skiing/snowboarding. I'm a beginner, so a little warning, there are only two very short greens at Alpine. The blues are apparently more challenging than other blues at Northstar and Squaw, so there isn't very much of a gap between super easy greens and harder blues. However my friends and I agree that after your first time, it's actually easier to learn on blues than it is on the easier slopes. The steep slopes helped me practice toe edge and were long enough so that I could avoid the stress of getting off the lift too many times. The lines were extremely short; I never had to wait. And once we got up on the blues, the runs are so wide that you really had plenty of room to practice and fall without being in anyone's way. I think Alpine is great for beginner to intermediates who are nervous about avoiding other people and want wide expanses to practice their skills. I'm definitely going back! read more

Alpine = Great snow and Great hidden powder days. When Squaw is packed and it is dumping hard, Alpine may be one of the best mountains in California, there are a lot of hiden gems at this resort. Generally they stay open later in the year compared to other resorts, also starting this year (2012) they are the only ski resort with a mile long park run.... I got in some early runs this season. About half the mountain was open. There were some icy spots but if you have sharp edges on your skis or board it shouldn't be a problem. This place is also owned by Squaw so you can ski both places in the same day if you want with your lift ticket. There's even a shuttle that runs between the two resorts. They can make snow so some of the runs are good right now. With more snow this place is going to be great. There's lots of parking. Now this place isn't super big like Squaw or Heavenly, but there's definitely plenty of runs to wear you out. Rumor has it that there are plans to connect with Squaw Valley. Not sure if that means by gondola, thru runs, or both. Guess I'll have to keep checking the rumor mill on this one. To get the best prices on lift tickets, shop around or definitely buy in advance. As I write this, another storm is dumping more snow...it should be good after it passes and will hopefully up more of the mountain! read more

Apline has some excellent skiing - the lodge & snake bars are a bit outdated, but have a certain "old school" vibe to them. The bar at the end of the day was packed in the main lodge & we enjoyed sitting out on the chairs at the base of the Scott Chair. The new high tech lift pass system is pretty cool - Think Fastrack on the Bay Bridge but this time you are the car and a credit card sized transponder is kept in your pocket. Tip: I noticed it worked better in my pants pocket than my jacket pocket. My only complaint is their shuttle bus is an old school bus (in fact we even saw a sign that says something to the effect of "sit down and mind the teacher"), I'm 6'5" and with my gear in hand I could not fit in those bus seats and had to sit sideways and get clobbered in the legs as others came aboard - they could certainly use some new buses even if the lift tix had to go up a buck or two to cover the cost! read more

Every Friday at 6:30AM we would board that freezing school bus and head over to Alpine Meadows to ski race. I remember leaving the base lodge on March 31, 1982 just hours before an avalanche came screaming down Wolverine Bowl, killing four people and taking out the lodge. The next year Kenny F. and I had our tickets pulled for jumping off the cornices built up on this bowl, now they run a snow cat over the crest. I have skied every part of this mountain and it is here I learned how to ski steep challenging terrain. Alpine Meadows is a great ski area, for two seasons I had a pass and nothing much to do other than ski here and I learned a lot about this mountain. First, on sunny days, follow the sun for the best skiing, on snowy days steep hidden runs like Are Father are the best and in the spring Sherwood has some of the best corn snow in Tahoe. The laid back Alpine attitude is changing a bit, still you don't have the competition of Squaw or Heavenly. read more

Major disclaimer: I don't like being in the cold, I don't like traveling too fast, I don't like dry air, I don't like having to bundle up and wear a million layers. AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, I HATE SKI LIFTS (huge fear of falling off). So, I'm not really a fan of skiing/snowboarding. BUT, my family goes skiing a ton, so I've had to endure. Alpine is a bit rustic but has something for everyone, especially the late risers on a powder day. The resort has two traverses that allow for powder well into the afternoon and sometimes the next day. The mountain is a little small but has a three high speeds that can move you around fast and a ton of varying terrain, chutes, steeps, bowls, trees a jungle and a bridge. The lodge is a zoo so pack you lunch and eat on the mountain or the ice bar (if you can't find you can't eat there). One odd comment - they are trying to be environmental with signs telling us how long plastic or Styrofoam lasts but still service at the lodge. Someone tell them. They are now part of the same group that owns Homewood. read more

3.5 star I had fun at Alpine but I thought the runs were more friendly. The blues were harder than Northstar but i still felt they were too short? But i really like the layout of the resort. there are so many ski lifts leading you to every inch of the mountain vs. some other resorts lifts only take you to one side the mountain. very family oriented atmosphere and lots of skiers! also, i love love love their lift access scanning. its just like the Clipper but no need to take out your ticket! your ticket is actually a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) card that you can put anywhere on your body as long its between your chin and upper body. the gate automatically opens when it detects your card within your body. LOVE IT. It minimize lines and employees! no need to have employees stand around and scan your ticket. How come Northstar doesnt do this especially since their tickets are so expensive. I am not sure if i will go back to Alpine Meadows since its kinda far from Reno but the tickets are cheap and i had a great time last weekend. read more

Not bad.. not bad at all.. It was a very nice day to go snowboardings.. Sucks for me though because I have no idea how. If you noticed the girl sitting on the bunny slopes aka "the meadow run" who moved about 1in every 5 minutes CONSTANTLY falling on her head well then yes, that was me.. Surprisingly this wasn't my first time snowboarding but to my credit it was my first time coming to the snow this season AND I had a cool jacket haha jk. The lines for the lifts were relatively short. Even during mid-day when the slopes were at it's busiest, the wait was no more than 5-7 minutes which isn't bad compared to the 20+ minute waits at Northstar. Food is your regular ski resort food. Pricey yet decent. Beer around 4$ and they have live music sponsored by 105.3. If you buy the lift tickets in advance they are only 50$ each from costco (Comes in packs of 2). Overall it was a great resort and a very nice day. P.s. sorry for the constant cussing as I ate it BAD down the bunny slope.... read more

My 2nd time snowboarding! Got here really early around 9:30 or so, the parking wasnt bad at all. My friend got the prepaid lift tickets from costco which were 100 bucks for 2 tickets. pretty good deal in my opinion. The snow was great this time, so the falls weren't so bad for me this time. i like how the lines were super long like my first experience at northstar. especially it being a weekend. the rides down the hills weren't so bad. the first time i went boarding i probably went down about 3 times. this time i got on the lifts about 7 or 8 times. the green lifts were pretty easy to get down, good for first timers like me. went on a few blue trails, but one kind of sucks cause if you slow down too much you come to a complete stop. for lunch we all shared some food, chicken nuggets, chili fries, pizza and chicken strips. all decent. the drinks there are fairly priced too, warning to myself dont drink and board. geez i ate sh*t so many times i sobered up after two lifts haha. all in all, i had a fun time. im actually going back again this weekend. can't WAIT! read more

This was the perfect mountain for me, who had not skied in some fifteen years, to get back on my bicycle, so to speak. We drove in around 9:00 on a Sunday (first weekend of March) and got a great parking spot about 100 yds. from the front of the lodge. The staff at the rental center was SO helpful and friendly from the moment we walked in the door. We were fully set up in less than 30 minutes. My wife got a great package deal that got her an all-day lift ticket, half-day group lesson, and full equipment rental. There were only four people in her group, so she lucked out and got some quality one-on-one instruction. I really enjoyed the intermediate runs here and especially enjoyed the back side of the mountain. The Hot Wheels chair was my least favorite--it's just too slow. People flocked to the high speed Roundhouse lift for good reason. My only complaint about Alpine was that there were a few flat areas that my unskilled, ill-equipped ass could barely manage. But beyond that, the experience was total five-star quality for me. read more

HUGE HUGE HUGE lodge, such a pleasant change from Northstar. Definitely no problems finding seating here. And did they recently remodel? Everything inside looks so new and contemporary. Even with the early season crusty snow conditions, this place was fantastic. No lift lines, ski tune-up in 15 minutes, and they never checked my lift ticket voucher. That means a free ski day anytime before 5/31/07! But unless you can figure out a way to safely detach the wicket and ticket, it'll require you to wear my pants. read more

There's nothing wrong with that...just snowboarder beware. It's a moderately priced resort. We had bought our tickets in advance at Costco. But still relatively moderately prices. I would say this resort hovers between three and four stars. Alpine Meadows seems great for newly intermediate skiers and boarders. The trail map consists of mostly blue runs, and many of the runs are very wide. The intermediate runs didn't seem very steep, and mostly ran straight down. For those more advanced, I would recommend heading towards Ward Peak. The snow was great when I went, but a few of their runs feature long flat areas. Make sure to try the Lakeview lift at least once for a gorgeous view of Lake Tahoe. On a clear day, you can see the mountains reflect off the water. This is actually a great spot to take a break and eat lunch if you packed your food. The top of Scott Peak marks a lot of the ski boundaries, so if you hike a little bit, you can find a quiet empty area to sit and enjoy the mountain air. The backside of Scott Peak had really nice snow when we went, but I feel like the runs are just really short as Ray's Rut was closed. The lift rides also felt really long as they only have a few express runs. Ultimately a decent resort, but a bit expensive. Check out Sports Basement for discounted lift tickets. Also make sure you do not lose your lift ticket!!! You're literally just holding onto a slip of paper, so be careful of it falling out of your pocket (ie. keep it zipped up and don't put anything else you need in that pocket). read more

2 stars due to a bad experience I had with Delana, who instructed the beginner's ski class I was in. She was particularly rude and unprofessional in the way she taught the lesson. In the beginning I was struggling to grasp basic concepts being that this was my first time ever skiing, and her attempts to reiterate what was just taught came off as very condescending and at times slightly embarrassing for me. For a beginner's instructor I would expect her to have more patience and not single people out this way. This I can get past, but what I especially did not appreciate was the way she spoke with my boyfriend who was also in the lesson. He would offer me assistance whenever I was struggling with something, and she would consistently bark at him to not do so. At one point she raised her voice and said "stop talking!" when he was trying to help me understand something I didn't get from her, and then continued to teach me in a way that was more stressful and frankly did not stick with me. He would also stick behind at times and wait for me to catch up if I was falling behind, and she'd order him to leave us behind. I am not sure if Delana harbors some concern over her lack of control as an instructor when students try to assist others, but he and I did not appreciate this behavior at all and it made the lesson harder to get through. Overall Delana seems to carry too much of an attitude when instructing and I feel like this should be brought up in case she upsets any future students. As for the resort I have no complaints, but unfortunately this bad interaction is what I now associate with Alpine. read more
