I can't articulate what a huge help Linda and the staff at AVL continue to be as mom's disease progresses.

Alpine Special Treatment Center (ASTCI) is a very unique facility that offers excellent job…read moreopportunities with room to grow. ASTCI is committed to providing the best client care available and opportunities for employees to gain incredible experience working with individuals with chronic and acute mental illness. The work environment can be fast paced at times, and stressful in certain moments. However, the Program Department's management is very supportive and helpful. I can honestly state the Program Director and Assistant Program Director are the best supervisors I have had in this field. Beyond that, the "direct care staff" care for one another and help each other out when working on the units. The teamwork at ASTCI is beyond excellent and the training ASTCI provides ensures that staff are well trained. In addition, veteran staff and supervisors offer ongoing training and support after the initial formal training period. At ASTCI one has the opportunity to grow as a clinician and person. There are frequent salary raises and self care bonuses, as well as annual raises based on performance factors. The pay is standard for mental health in San Diego County. Having worked at other companies within mental health in different counties, I am confident that Alpine Special Treatment Center is the best place in mental health I have worked. It is frustrating to read the poor reviews coming for a minority of disgruntled past employees who left because they were not good at their jobs. Please take them with a grain of salt. Alpine is a great place to work, learn, grow and mature in the mental health field.

BEWARE OF GLOWING REVIEWS FROM EMPLOYEES. Reviews on a business should be from a customer…read moreperspective. Not from those who work for the business and are likely going to be "encouraged" to give 5* reviews. This is one of the biggest reasons I am not a fan of Yelp. It's terribly manipulated and allows, even facilitates, bias. There's one bad employee review from Andrew J here as well. Although, it also goes to bias, at least it shows some insight on this business. In regards to MY experience with ASTC, I think ASTC is the epitome of the state of our mental health system in California. It's unfortunate, and I think businesses like this are exploitive and not as helpful as "advertised." My son was there for nearly two years and although he was "safe" from harm, I believe the ASTC is a common business model of simple warehousing of the mentally ill. There was very little, if any, "rehabilitation" or "transitionary" resources, therapy, or "treatment" which ironically, IS IN THEIR NAME. I've found many of their policies antiquated, useless, and in some cases downright counter productive. Unfortunately, there are very few choices for Californians suffering from mental illness in the residential care establishment. Most are financial machines that merely manage their population by sedation. It's impersonal and NOT a "treatment." Certainly, not anything "Special." The residents have NO access to classroom programs, rehabilitation programs, vocational programs, or anything else that appears to prepare them for transition to independent living and life skills. They have no access to computers, cell phones, or Internet access in any form. Visitation is very limited and on most days in an inadequate environment, and you can't even enjoy your meal with your loved one. I've read the reviews from the employees that were not happy there, and it comes as no surprise. My experience with the staff was not always pleasant and the low morale was apparent. In fairness, they were not ALL unpleasant. People are all individuals and handle things differently. However, if you have anything to say to staff I almost forgot to mention, I saw no evidence of any encouragement of physical activity or access to a recreational facility aside from a caged in (15' X 30' maybe) patio with table and chairs, but NO exercise or recreational equipment to speak of. You don't have to be a doctor to know that physical activity is directly correlated to mental health. Someone should also speak to their "dietician" and dramatically change their diets. Every meal and snack time my son spoke of was full of carbs and sugars. The only restriction I witnessed was their policy on caffeinated drinks. Again, that's great. But, seemed like more of a self serving interest for the staff to not have their residents given anything to counter their ability to manage them. It's a warehouse and your loved one is inventory.

If I could give this negative 5 stars I would! I wanted to schedule a follow up ER visit for my son…read moreto get his lungs checked after a bad bout of bronchitis and chronic cough. The earliest appointment available was a month and a half out. The day of the appointment finally arrived so we went to the appointment this morning, which I thought was scheduled for 8:45am. Showed up at the clinic at 8:30am, waited in line to check in only to be told by reception we were in the wrong suite and to go down the hall. We did so and I checked in with another receptionist. He had me fill out a one and a half page form and then proceeded to tell me the doctor was not going to see us because we were late. I said, it was for 8:45? He said no, it was scheduled for 8:30. We were literally only 8 minutes late and no one else was waiting in the waiting room at the time we arrived nor by the time we left. He asked if we could come back later that afternoon instead. How does a doctor go from having no availability for a month and a half to 3 available appointments on the same day? Not only that but the nurse came out to ask me questions about my son's medical history. That is not HIPPA compliant to do that. The audacity of that Medical Deity to say he couldn't see us for being a few minutes late. Meanwhile, whenever we actually can be seen the doctors always take their sweet *ss time to come to the treatment room. Making you wait anywhere between 15-45 minutes. Trying to get a correct and timely referral from this place is also another nightmare. Your literal life hangs in the wait of these doctors and their mistakes. Not recommended and we will not be returning.

The short story: -obscenely overpriced…read more-fraudulent -neglectful The long story: When my grandmother moved into Aerie Meadows, she was ambulatory, (mostly) continent, and in good health, besides having dementia. Over the course of approximately 3 months at Aerie Meadows, my grandmother: -developed pneumonia -got UTIs which led to kidney damage -became immobile -became incontinent -developed blood clots in her legs that were left untreated and spread to her lungs -had to go on oxygen -was rushed to the ER and hospitalized TWICE I get that it's really hard to prevent pneumonia and UTIs in nursing homes. However the rest of these problems were directly caused by Aerie Meadows' neglect. Instead of allowing my grandmother to walk (with a walker) and use the bathroom at will, they kept her bound to a wheelchair and made her urinate and defecate in diapers (which, of course, led to the UTIs). So, within no time, my grandma was immobile and incontinent. And, over time, the immobility led to blood clots in her legs, which eventually spread to her lungs. What's worse, when my grandma became immobile and incontinent AS A DIRECT RESULT OF AERIE MEADOWS NEGLECT, Jan, the owner/operator, had the nerve to try to upcharge us $800 per month for a higher level of care. And, the most absurd and infuriating part: After her second Aerie Meadows-induced hospitalization, my grandma had to go to rehab to regain some mobility. On a Friday, the rehab center announced that my grandma's mobility improved and she could be discharged on the following Tuesday. That day, Jan informed us they would not allow my grandma to return to the nursing home because she was too difficult to care for. (May I remind you that she and her staff were the impetus for my grandma's rapid decline and my grandma has somewhat improved as a result of hospitalization and rehab.) This meant my parents had one weekend to collect my grandma's things from Aerie Meadows and find another nursing home for my grandma to move into. It's also worth mentioning that technically this is considered a breach of contact. Additional notes: -They promise daily activities and exercise for their residents. They do not deliver on this promise. They basically just sit the residents in front of a TV all day. -Their rates are higher than average for the area, but they offer far fewer amenities and obviously far worse care. -Unlike most nursing homes which have 24/7 visiting hours, they have limited visiting hours. -Rather than listening to and acting on advice, Jan is a master of making excuses, deflecting constructive criticism, and finding ways to try to increase costs.
