After feeling taken advantage of price wise at every single meal we have had in Hawaii this was a very nice break (paid $50 for a plate of noodles and red sauce at dinner last night). Got a shrimp combo plate with shrimp and I wasn't very impressed. The steak seemed like a cheap cut of meat and was rather tough to chew. The shrimp was shelled and deveined which was nice but the flavor was just not there for me. The garlic should have been cooked longer because it tasted like raw garlic. Had the lovely misfortune of getting off at the wrong bus stop today, which landed me a block from Al's food truck. Wow! The food was so delicious. I got the shrimp and rib combination. This is the best BBQ on Maui. Al is a true local and makes his BBQ with pure aloha nui loa! We've been going to Maui 4-5 times every year and have always seem to miss out on the true Hawaiian style BBQ. My wife had the garlic shrimp and I had the steak and chicken combo. What a pleasure to eat!! The shrimp were' crunchy and slightly dark and crisp on the edges, the steak and chicken had a beautiful glaze with slightly sweet crunch - JUST perfection. Also, don't skip the sauce - this stuff is ambrosia! if Al packaged the sauce he would be a millionaire and have to close this place. Don't do it Al!!! Also, I must mention the mac salad and steamed vegetables you get this with all the meals with extra big aloha helpings. This food truck is the most amazing food I have ever had while in Hawaii. I have been to all four major islands and my family and I will track this food truck down wherever they are. The portion sizes are enormous and can feed many over many days. I have tried all of it. A tofu dish has just been added as a healthier option, but it's all healthier options. The family is amazing and super helpful from their food to sights to see, to even just where to find a cool place to relax. We love this food so much we have asked them to cater our wedding vow renewal. Please try the steak and shrimp combo. The Mac salad is to die for and by far the best anywhere!!!! We stopped here a couple weeks ago on our way back from Paia. This is one of the best places to stop off for food that we have found on the whole island. The place is nice and clean and the food was awesome. The first time we ate, we had the shrimp lunch plate and the chicken and noodles lunch plate and the portions were a very nice size. I would highly recommend this to everybody keep a lookout for a bright yellow trailer and stop and get a wonderful meal! read more

You can't get more fire than with the garlic shrimp plate! It's just as tasty as the pictures look. So flavorful and so delicious way better than most restaurants in the area. We ate in the car outside the food truck which was totally worth the drive eon the island. Most restaurants and places to eat by the resorts lack flavor and are not that tasty. As my wife and I journeyed home from our 26 mile bike ride down Haleakala we wanted one more picture of the glorious peak. I pulled over to the side of the road, snapped some photos, and as we were about to leave, the beautiful scent of grilled beef filled my nose. Unmistakable. I looked around for the source and spotted a small yet noticable yellow trailer across the road. The intoxicating aroma almost carried me towards its source. There stood Al, grilling away. They had yet to open so we were trying to decide to wait it out or return to our hotel on the opposite coast. Sensing my indecisiveness, Al did the only thing he could, gave me a sample. Good Jesus. It was like the first time I heard the theme to Star Wars. As soon as the meat hit my tongue, I knew I was under his spell. My eyes watered, my jaws stopped. I just wanted to enjoy the flavor as long as possible. No brainer I would be returning in 1 hours time. At 11:42am we returned. Now I dont know what sorcery goes on in that trailer but I dont care, take my soul. The marinated steak was so juicy and tender.....I thought I was in Elysium. The BEST I've ever tasted anywhere. The best shrimp we had during our entire trip to Maui. There happened to be a cute street fair in Wailuku the first day my friends and I were all assembled and revved up for vacation so we eagerly explored our hostel neighborhood in its lively state. After perusing all the many food truck options we rounded back to the first, Al's BBQ Pit. Tragically the party right before us got the last order of adobe fried rice, and the smiley cashier girl amicably commiserated with us, but we were still pretty happy to order the garlic shrimp plate and steak plate. It was pretty dark so we couldn't see the food too clearly, but the garlic shrimp totally wowed us! The shrimp tasted very fresh and firm, not mealy like previously frozen or manhandled shrimp taste. The steak also tasted a nice medium rare, with thorough teriyaki-esque marination. Out of all the food trucks at the festival, Al's BBQ Pit was cooking its food on the spot as opposed to just using metal catering trays to store pre-cooked food. They are certainly dedicated to the quality of their food, and it does make a difference! read more
