We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and time spent here. The whole space is very inviting and also has a lot of interesting items for sale, including very unique and original art. We made dinner reservations through Open Table and were seated immediately when we arrived. Everyone was very friendly and happy to be there. That positive attitude goes far and really makes the dining experience a more pleasant one. I ordered the lamb chops and split them. I'm glad we did because it was such a generous portion. For $8 more they will give you the same amount of sides per split plate. It was a good idea and then we had room for the pineapple upside down cake, which was a nice way to end our meal. Our guest had the noodles and they had a wonderful flavor and were cooked perfectly. The menu had several great options and specials for each night. The dinner at HGS was the perfect place to enjoy a nice meal out. We were visiting with family and we felt as though we were at our own kitchen table. We were well cared for and not rushed at all. I was really looking forward to the spot because it was recommended to me by my Airbnb host and a couple other friends. However I don't really understand why this spot is so popular and is so historical. I thought the food was very mediocre and we tried many things on the menu. We also thought that the drinks were too sweet. We tried a bunch of things on the menu too. I think you can get better tasting food at other spots like Monkey Pod and Mama's Fish House at a similar price point. that said the service was good and it was a nice ambiance sort of like a rustic Hawaiian vibe. read more

We visited for lunch on a busy week day but, despite the crowd, our wait time was only about 15 minutes. We got a pleasant seat at the window and our server brought water and menus immediately. We both ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos. Considering that these are a restaurant staple around the Island, there is plenty of competition. Additionally, the price point at Hali'imaile is, significantly, above the standard so our expectations were pretty high. The two tacos (@$27/plate) were ample and the grilled fish was flavorful and moist. The pico and lime cream were decent relishes but sounded more exotic than they actually tasted. We both thought the purple, soft tortilla shells (flour?) were doughy and unappealing. We really enjoyed the mixture of tortilla and taro chips served on the side though. Overall, the dining experience was pleasant and the service was attentive enough to warrant a good tip. I'm not sure we'd go out of our way to eat there again but if we happen to be in the area, we'd definitely give it another try. read more

They were having a 20% off kamaaina day so we decided to take advantage of the offer. The restaurant used to be a plantation store so the decor inside is a reminder of that. The items displayed on the shelves are for sale. The service here is stellar! We started with Passion Berry Iced Tea and Crab Pizza. The Crab Pizza has a creamy crab topping on a homemade crust. It reminds me of crab dip with pita bread- so yummy! The iced tea is fruity, really refreshing, and includes refills. For dinner we ordered the Prime Rib special and Korean BBQ Braised Short Rib. Both were served with garlic mashed potatoes and veggies. The Prime Rib was 14oz and cooked perfectly. The Short Rib was fork tender and well seasoned. Visiting Maui for the first time and stopped by Hali'imaile General Store for lunch on a Tuesday around noon. I ordered the Soup of the Day (tomato basil) and grilled mahi-mahi. The soup was lukewarm and forgettable. The mahi-mahi was fine with rice, but nothing memorable. The major issue: a chicken sandwich at our table was served with clearly burnt buns -- blackened edges on both halves. It was obvious before it even hit the table. This could've been a 3-star visit, but serving visibly burnt food without acknowledgment or replacement shows poor quality control. Disappointing experience. Cannot recommend. read more

After my fav fine dining restaurant Lahaina grill closed after the fire and being disappointed by mama's fish house, I'm in dire need to find a nice restaurant in Maui to splurge for. This place is....alright. For the price, quality, freshness, drink selections, and attentive service, I was happy enough to return. It's no Lahaina grill, but unlike most places in Maui which are expensive tourist traps, here you DO get what you pay for. And I'm happy with that. Everything is made well. Nothing mind blowing, but solid and tasty. Portion is generous. Drinks - tried mai tai (prefer monkey pod), Maui mule (too sweet didn't love), and lava flow (had better at cheap tiki bars on the island). IMO food is somewhat fairly priced especially for lunch (dinner cost significantly more for the same menu items), but drinks are on the pricier side. It matches the vibe, obviously, but I'd rather spend it somewhere else. If you come from CA or NY, I would keep the expectations low, and you might be pleasantly surprised. read more

After coming down from hiking all day I just wanted a quick plate lunch. Found Hali'imaile General Store on yelp and thought I'd give it a try. (I didnt look at the reviews or pics) In my mind I was thinking "General Store" kind of food which to me are hamburgers and plate lunches. HAHA! To my surprise it was a little elevated. I felt bad walking in there dressed as I was but, it was still comfortable. The service was great from being greeted at the entrance to my server, a local guy who was super nice and friendly. I ordered the "Buratta Beet Salad" which was AMAZING! The beets, tomatoes, pesto and balsamic glaze made such a great combination. I should have ordered 2 (yes it was only me). Also ordered the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahimahi. The fish was cooked perfectly but, to me the sweet potato mash, lilikoi sauce and pineapple salsa didn't go well with the fish. Well, not to my liking. The crispy onions seemed stale also. Parking is limited but adequate. The sign there is a little intimidating tho. Says park at your own risk (or something like that). What a shame we came here still full from breakfast! Our family vacation in Maui involved a lot of sightseeing and eating, we should have given ourselves a bigger break so we could enjoy this place to the fullest! First off, the location is very unique and quaint. I grew up in Oahu in a plantation village so seeing a business stick to the plantation theme y keeping the original building was surprising, but I love that it pays homage to the history of Hawaii. The inside has been modernized but the surrounding areas with the rocky parking area reminds you that you're still in the country. For food, because we weren't all that hungry we just split a couple of main dishes and sides; we also had to keep it light because breakfast was so heavy. The pizza, fish, and salads were all great combos proving that the food is great from appetizer to main dish and they seem to paid well no matter what combo you get. Service was also fast and gracious. We got to meet the owner and although it was busy our food and waters were taken care of fast. I was surprised to find out they close mid-day for lunch, wish we could have come back for the dinner menu! Everyone at the bar in the afternoon looked like they were enjoying their time and there was a mix of locals and tourists alike. What would you consider us if we just came in from Oahu? Nice spot to grab lunch after the pineapple tour. We couldn't get a reservation so we decided to walk in. We did get seated right away around 1:30. We ordered the Ahi poke, crab pizza, fish and chips, teriyaki burger and chicken sandwich. Everyone liked their food but the crab pizza was most notable, it was so tasty and creamy. Beautiful venue, plates have a lovely presentation, food is fresh, BUT... service is average and so is the food taste. For the price, it is not worth a meal. Have a drink, maybe share an appy, and move on. 4 of us had supper, none were very satisfied. Literally hit 7-11 in Kahului for manapua and sui mai right after. Crab pizza was OK, but not brilliant. Canned crab and cream cheese spread, maybe goat cheese. Tasty but not rocket surgery, yet still the best thing we ordered. My brother ordered the poké bowl. Poké was nothing special, but the rice was served cold and thus somewhat hard, very off-putting. The chef's special chopped kale salad was a total fail. Maybe kale and pineapple don't mix well, the whole salad just tasted sour. The roasted beets offered some balance but overall the salad was overwhelmed by the clash of flavours. The radish and pickled onion were totally lost, muted by everything else. It was like they took a normal salad and threw a bunch of poorly ripened pineapple in there. Yuck. Service was not friendly, bordering on annoyed. Dropped off the bill without asking us if we were done or how we'd like to split the bill. A smile didn't even crack her face the whole time, despite automatic gratuity. No Aloha spirit here at all, even though most patrons are higher-spending Haole mainlanders. The cocktails are worth it, would recommend those but that's it. The Lemongrass Ginger Frost in particular was so refreshing, a burst of bright flavour, wonderful. What a gem! My husband and I could not find Maui gold pineapples anywhere so what better place than the actual farm. So after we stocked up for our road to Hana trip and some extra at the hotel we walked a few steps to this cute General store to grab a snack. This is a full restaurant, not a store. They have window seating, a bar and seating in the back of the restaurant too. Super cute Hawaiian themed music. The menus had everything from appetizers to salads and fish and chips etc. I ordered a Chinese chicken salad and my husband got a Cobb salad. We were not greeted right away, stood at the hostess stand and people passed us by then a 3rd lady greeted us. She asked us if we had a reservation, which we did not, and she sat us right away, in the back. Our server came up right away and gave us a water carafe. The salads were big servings and were the best salads we ever had. They offered dessert but we were stuffed. Would highly recommend!!! And we will def be back. read more

There wasn't anything that really stood out, although the teriyaki burger was quite good and I really enjoyed the pineapple upside down cake. We love Upcountry Maui and we love Hali"maile General Store. The setting is unique and rustic and that definitely helps to make dining here a special event. The last time we were here, I got the Coconut Seafood Curry, which was outstanding! This time I ordered the Loco Moco and it was okay. I think I prefer a dish like this in a local restaurant or diner as opposed to a nicer place like this. If I get this in Kihei, it comes in a bowl, maybe a little greasy and is covered with gravy. Not saying that's better, just my preference. My wife got the Crab Pizza and was not impressed. The crust was kind of gummy/chewy and she found it unappealing, so she didn't eat half of it. When the server came to our table, she noticed this and asked if there was something wrong. After my wife told her, she apologized and left. When she returned with the bill, they removed the charge for the pizza, which I think is a very classy move. We will return because we know they will stand behind their product, and because we like it here so much! read more

We stopped in at the general store after we did the Maui gold pineapple tour. Much to my surprise, this small general store served up some amazing food for lunch. The flavors were great and the place filled quickly with some locals. So you know it's good. We stayed at one of the resorts in Kaanapali and this place rocked them comparatively in culinary experience. Highly recommend if in the area or on the way to the airport. What a cool building with beautiful art and pleasant light! Higher end family atmosphere and would still be great for a romantic date. Our server was Kanai - what a great dude- friendly, attentive, and somehow perfectly walked the line between leaving us alone and taking excellent care of us. We began with the most amazing appetizer ever after smelling it walk past us - the crispy pork wontons! What a treat. 10/10. He had the beet salad with pork belly, very good. I got the teriyaki burger with chorizo orzo, sheesh I'm drooling just thinking about it. As awesome as all of that was...dessert was the BEST. Banana cheesecake stole our hearts. What a huge disappointment. This was our favorite restaurant in Maui, enough so we visited twice on our honeymoon twenty years ago. So when we came back with two very special work friends and their spouses I could not have been more excited to take them to HaliMalie to celebrate. Big mistake. First off it is no longer the quaint atmosphere it once was. Somehow fame got the better of them and they doubled the size of the restaurant and lost all the energy. We got sat in a circular table in the middle of a somewhat empty restaurant at 7:30pm, only to have the waiter let us know that the kitchen closes at 8 so we should order fast - what!!!! I think we were all floored they'd even book a reservation at this time if they'd try to push you out and while the waiter did his best we felt rushed from that minute on. What a way to celebrate. Food was mediocre at best. Sashimi plate so awful - couldn't even properly share them ah the table and the curled up tuna was very unforced, the smoked salmon from a package (and why would it be smoked in sashimi) and for all six of us the mayonnaise thing on the bottom layer completely unidentified - smoked fish, chicken, guess we'll never know. The cocktails were all syrup - but the waiter did graciously ask me if he could swap the tai mai for something else but the mai tai was also somewhat undrinkabke. The pork buns were good.... The tuna bowl one of the worst displays of packaged udon, teriyaki sauce and medium at best grade tuna with little flavor. The chicken was burnt and dry. The pineapple upside down cake was good which I think was their staple dessert back in the day for the restaurant and one was enough for six of us. Wine list was not expensive but also not good wines.. I think we were all thrown off when the waiter asked if he could box our food in the middle of the food but when we said we were still eating the staff must of got the hint and they let us take our time to finish our meal and not rush us out anymore. I guess we've seen very popular restaurants get big and well known and try to commercialize that but unfortunately Halimaile sold themselves out and I was so embarrassed to have chosen this restaurant to show my work colleagues and their spouses how appreciative I was of them. Delicious eats - all well prepared - with mainstays and classics being revisited on a rotating weekly themed menu as well (special appetizers & entrees - at time of our experience). Colorful artwork creates visual interest to adorn original General Store architecture (presumably) of lofty ceiling heights with high operable windows and marries the vintage to contemporary. The iced tea is in it's own lane - "passionberry" - so refreshing. Fresh local fish is in the cooler for your seafood choices. Our waiter, I believe his name was Kai, was friendly and attentive. He had a very friendly and upbeat attitude. We started out with the crab cake. Two come on a plate, so it's a nice appetizer to share amongst two people. The onions and cucumber garnish were also pretty tasty and added a nice crunch to each bite of the crab cake. I got fish and chips and my husband got the baby back ribs. I was able to tase the ribs and he got a piece of my fish (my meal came with three pieces of fish). The bbq sauce was good, but the ribs weren't fall off the bone tender. My fish and chips were good, but a surprising star of the show was--the coleslaw! I know, right?! We were able to make a lunch reservation for a party of 6 only 24 hours in advance which seems hard to do around here. The building is charming with a clear effort to preserve history and lots of local art on the walls. There is a kids menu which was nice for us with our two littles. We ordered the Bao buns as an appetizer and were pleased. The "tai mai" (their $19 version of a Mai Tai) while supposedly awarded something by someone, was way too sweet and not nearly as good as Monkeypod's so don't bother. For lunch, all of us ordered different things so we could sample each others. Hands down the best thing at the table was the Seafood Curry. WOW. Next best was the Mahi Mahi fish & chips (that was the catch of the day). Cooked to perfection and now in my top 3 favorite fish & chips ever. The ribs, while on the menu since their inception and came highly recommended by the waiter, was too saucy for us. Cooked well, but so much sauce had a bit of a TGI Friday's vibe. We had a Teriyaki Burger, Special of the day crabcakes, and fish and chips. All 3 were excellent. The portion sizes are not very big and the crabcakes were tiny. Solid 5 on taste. 2 or 3 stars on portion size. The French Fries are horrible, the rest was great. The French Fries are just frozen preseasoned typical Sysco fake fries and clearly not a proper homemade fry. Had a noon reservation. I called and made sure that we could eat in an hour. We had a pineapple tour at 1, which is right next door and a 1 minute walk. The reply was, "if we can't get you out in an hour we have a problem. So, we showed up at 1150 for our 1200 reservation. Were seated at 1212. We had only water and no appetizers. The waitress brought 2 out of 3 of our food out at 1249. The last portion came at 1253. Horrible Horrible Horrible service. At 1240 the waitress told me she could go ahead and ring ticket up to get me out as fast as possible. So. We took her up on it. This easily could have been a 5 star review. But, this poor service and the fact they made multiple excuses instead of just owning up to their mistakes. The manager did offer to comp us. I suspect she knew we had already paid, but I don't know that . Would I go back? Not even a chance. Horrible management on overall service.
