Got food from Al's BBQ Pit for the first time last night at the Sunday Market in Kahului. We got the Big Al combo, garlic noodles with steak, and brownie mochi. And holy moly they were all phenomenal. There were four adults and we were all completely satisfied with the amount of food from those items. Sunday market at the old Kahului shopping center...I was at home, my wife bought me a Fried Akule Plate Lunch Special for $14. Barrahhh buggah brought tears to my eyes. I thought I was 12 years old again growing up in my hometown Hana. The plate had one akule, 3 scoops white rice, diced tomatoes and onions, and a sauce mix of shoyu, calamansi, and vinegar. I'm old school native Hawaiian weigh about 270 lbs. I'm not a professional reviewer or taster, BUT I am a professional eater. So I lovingly told my wife, "Honey...next time you see this special again, buy 2 plates." I don't know who Bruddah Al is, but he know what he doing. I am honestly still so upset over this. I don't even know how to warn people that plan to come here bc the hours said they were open AND it was a Saturday. I live in south kihei and I drove 45 minutes to try this place, got there at noon, and it was closed. So I was like ok, maybe island time. So we decided to kill time upcountry and check back. I then came back at 3pm, still closed. This is irrelevant of the place, but I'm also currently dieting and this was my cheat day meal and I was looking forward to it all week long and drove an hour and a half round trip for it. Some of the absolute best bbq that I've had on the island. I came while looking for a good place to eat since living in pukalani. I didnt see ribs in the pics online so I was pleasantly surprised when I came to the truck and they had ribs. I order ribs with garlic noodles. My friend ordered the chicken and steak combo with rice. We both loved our food. The meat with tender but still had a good flavor from the grill. My ribs were falling off the bone. This was excellent bbq chicken and rice. 2 scoops of rice, some cabbage as well. The chicken was well seasoned and so flavorful. Cool little market with other food options but im not sure how you will pass on Al's once you try it. I hope i have an opportunity to try it again before leaving. read more

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife. We were at the upcountry farmers market and happened to see a food truck cluster. So after looking around the farmers market we headed on over for some lunch. After perusing all of the menus, we ultimately decided on Al's BBQ Pit. Since it's a food truck, there's not too much to say about it other than it had photos of many of the food items on the side of the truck and there were two windows, 1 for ordering and 1 for pickup. On this day my wife and I decided to go big and split it and so we went with the big Al combo. It was maybe a 5-10 minute wait from ordering until we had our food. The big Al's combo was some teriyaki chicken, 3 shrimp and some steak, all on a giant bed of Adobe rice. If it sounds like a lot of food, you would be correct and it was heavy too! Once we got back to our place, my wife and I dug in. It ended up being quite good! The chicken was moist and had a nice flavor to it while the shrimp were nice and sweet. The steak was cooked to a nice medium and had a great grill flavor to it. Finally the Adobe rice was awesome with pieces of pork in it and peppercorns which gave a nice little spice when bitten. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Both my wife and I enjoyed everything that we got and the big Als combo was a ton of food! read more

I was at the Makawao Third Friday event and decided to finally try out Al's BBQ Pit. There wasn't too much of a line and after quickly perusing their small menu, I went with the marinated steak & garlic shrimp combo. Wasn't sure what the steak was marinated in, but why not? I love steak. After ordering, they give you a ticket with your number on it. Big sign says "No stub, no food!" Alrighty then. Remember to keep your ticket stub to pick-up your order, folks. Otherwise, you'll be SOL. Got my food within maybe 10 minutes or so, not too long of a wait at all which was awesome since I was really hungry! I dug into my garlic shrimp and the garlic needed to be cooked more. No one really likes the taste of raw garlic.. at least not me. The shrimp itself tasted like it was cooked beforehand as well and not fresh. Overall, just ok. The steak was marinated in teriyaki sauce which I wasn't really expecting. While the teriyaki flavor was not too bad, most of the meat was not cut against the grain making it very chewy and harder to break up the muscle fibers.. Had they cut against the grain, it would've been much more tender and easier to chew. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about teriyaki beef with such a thick cut of meat. Not my thing. Overall, it was just ok for me. I didn't see any specials that night, but their standard menu doesn't have anything really unique. I don't think I'll be in a hurry to try them again since they offer the standard plate lunches that you could find at other food establishments. read more

Good flavor, Smokey and tender. A little pricey but worth it in the portions. Teri chicken steak and shrimp are my go to items.

I've frequented Made on Maui since it started & every year I stop here for the garlic noodles as it is very good in flavor & served with a protein to balance it off. However, every year the veggies in it seem to increase. I'm not a fan of vegetables at all & one of the reasons why I order garlic noodles whenever it's on the menu anywhere is for the lack of veggies. I get it, it makes it "healthier", but it's called garlic noodles. Last year I sure seemed to pull a lot of broccoli out of it & it seemed to be like a space filler as all that could've been filled with noodles. Aside from that everyone there is always friendly & food is ready pretty quick. Will have to see how this year's batch is. read more

Al's BBQ Pit has a menu that made my dinner decision really difficult. Everything looks so ono. I decided to try the Adobo Fried Rice with Chicken and it was great! The fried rice was tasty & plentiful and the chicken was perfectly prepared with a dash of Al's barbeque sauce. I could have gone for a little more sauce, but I was more than satisfied. One of the benefits of food truck cuisine is taking it to Heritage Park and enjoying a well made meal in a picturesque setting. I'll be back to try more of Al's cooking. read more

I don't eat at food trucks very often but the aroma coming from this bbq was too much for me to resist. There were so many choices but I finally decided to order the Adobo fried rice with chicken, boy did I make a good choice. Only had to wait 10 min or so for my order, staff was really friendly while I waited. I added a little shoyu to the rice. Huge portion, it could easily feed 2-3 people. Surprised I have yet to write a review for Al's. This has become a staple in our household during Sunday Night Marketplace dinners. You know you've become a regular when you walk up to the truck and the lady says "One Big Al coming up". It's that good! My gang and I have been absent from the Wailuku First Friday event for some time now due to the loss of their beer garden. Fortunately, a new bar opened up on Market Street which is what brought us back to the event and me to Al's BBQ Pit which does a booth at the monthly festival. FOOD: Big Al's Combo - $18. From the looks of the menu pics posted by others, I don't think they sell this plate from their food truck but do so at the Wailuku First Friday event. This plate is top dawg, offering everything on their menu - sliced BBQ chicken, steak and 3 grilled shrimp all over a bed of pork adobo fried rice. Total winners! Everything was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I'll usually shy away from fried rice accompanying already salty meats, but these guys know how not to go overboard with the sodium. Highly recommended! I REAAAAALLY wanted Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp, and unfortunately the other place was closed so being desperate, we gave this place a try since they had good reviews. I got the half Hawaiian garlic shrimp and half steak plate with rice and mac salad. Unfortunately I have to be honest and say that the food was VERY mediocre. The shrimp was laughable, poorly seasoned. The steak was actually tender but also lacking flavor. The mac salad is a thicker consistency which I like, but others may not. Stumbled upon this food truck after walking the parking lot by Burger King. Many places to pick from, but I gravitated towards this one in particular. They have a good sized menu. They have chicken, pork, shrimp, even what looks like a vegetarian option. It was actually really hard for me to choose, but ended up picking the adobo fried rice with chicken. I haven't had adobo fried rice in sooo long, so I had to. You also opt out for steak. Total was $14. Sat in the shade under the tree near by and you can see the chef cooking on a bbq grill! Freaking AWESOME! Took about 20 minutes or so which I didn't mind. Being in the industry I have a lot of patience, as should everyone that goes out to eat! FOOD: The food is just awesome. The taste of the chicken with that Teri glaze/sauce was perfect. The fried rice was super good. Added more shoyu, because i prefer it that way. Also, the portion is HUGE!! Kanak Attack. There is no other way to describe their plates. Something about the way the char just hits a certain way. Reminding anybody of those (hanabatta) days. The rice soaks up all the juice of the chicken, steak and shrimp. Yup I have tried all three - and you really can't go wrong. You will find them at the Sunday Food Market or at the Upcountry Market. I won't hate too much on their choice of football team, but I do appreciate they know what those kind of grinds remind me of. The days when we used to be able to tailgate with friends outdoors. So we have been on the island for 7 days and the food everywhere has been ok or so so, on the way back from Our daily outings we where in the search for something quick and more budget friendly we decided on food trucks. Well I was thinking BBQ and AL's hit the spot I would put the steak and fried rice plate over everything I had the whole vacation so far and might be the best food the whole trip.
