I stopped by here yesterday for my morning coffee. Whenever I go on vacation I try to hit up a new coffee shop every morning and on this morning I ended up heading over to Espresso Mafia. We were heading back from a sunrise at Haleakalā when I decided to check Yelp for good nearby coffee places and this popped up, so we headed on over. This coffee shop is on Baldwin Ave in Makawao and the inside is pretty large with lots of seating. They also have a display case with baked goods over by where you order. After looking over the menu I ultimately decided on one of their specials, a cherry vanilla latte, which I don't think I have seen before in a coffee. After only a couple of minute wait, I had my latte and was out the door. My coffee here ended up tasting really good, almost like a cherry vanilla ice cream. The cherry flavor came first and that was followed by the sweet vanilla. While I know the coffee was there, it got lost a bit with the cherry vanilla flavoring. Still, I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. A cherry vanilla latte is a new combo for me, but I enjoyed it and only wish the espresso was a bit more pronounced. read more

Makawao, HI. A pretty darned good latte is served up here. Nice rich flavor and a bit of buzz to go. You must request a ceramic cup or you'll get a paper one. The people working here were pretty happy and animated. This vibe also included the girl taking my order avoiding my existence for as long as possible, while the joyful interaction with the barista ensued. On a return visit the barista gave my a one on one lesson on latte art, that was pretty cool. I'll see how well it works at home, but I'm pretty sure my Gaggia at home is unable to produce the quality of micro foam necessary to do this. read more

A fun place to grab a beverage after pickup of the famous doughnuts on a stick from across the street. Hubby gave his cappuccino a 5 and I'd give my special amaretto vanilla bean latte a 3.5 because on first taste, I tasted burnt to me. I'm not a big coffee person so it could just be me. Lattes for the office today! This time I went for the Strawberry Matcha and I absolutely made the right choice. Others had the Peppermint Matcha (delicious), the Flat White and the regular latte. I loooove their new location - where SIP used to be. I know it took them a while to be able to move into this interior spot - for a while they had their stand in the outdoor patio area. But now they have been all moved in and their coffee is as amazing as ever. I just went there this morning and had a rosemary latte - no sweetener. It was absolutely scrumptious! I love that they make their own syrups and always use the finest ingredients. This is hands down my favorite spot on the island to grab a coffee. Super busy place. The team working was VERY friendly and they seemed to enjoy working together. There are tourist activities that stop here (like mountain bike tours). It gets busy when they do! Espresso Mafia has a great vibe -- minimalist, clean, and clearly focused on doing espresso well. I appreciated the attention to detail and the no-frills approach. That said, the coffee itself was just okay for me. I ordered the tiramisu latte and while it was smooth and well-made, it was missing something -- maybe depth or flavor that really stands out. It wasn't bad at all, just not memorable. Still, I'd recommend it if you're in the area and want a more refined, specialty coffee experience. This place is a must try! First off the area it's in is so cute and very fun to visit so that's an easy plus! I went on a Tuesday I think and while there were people inside there was plenty of room to sit inside and relax. Inside is so clean and welcoming, plenty of seating available. The employees were so friendly and clearly knowledgeable! They explained in depth the process of how they make their Ube nitro to myself and my family (we are coffee lovers and often make our own at home). Now the Ube nitro was delicious, I mean just the look of it is stunning but it tastes even more beautiful than it looks! I didn't get any of the food but it looked amazing. I got the coconut latte with coconut milk and wasn't too impressed. It tasted almost sour so that was a bit of a surprise but maybe it was coconut water that was used. I should've asked more questions and not assuming what it would taste like compared to other coconut lattes I've had. It also tastes a little watered down. My husband got the Ube latte and enjoyed his. It wasn't overly sweet and had a nice Ube flavor. The only complaint he had was that it could have used more espresso. Amazing coffee and even more amazing customer service. I had a flat white, but my friend's Italian latte really stole the show! Rosemary and thyme sound absurd in latte, but I was very happily proven wrong. And don't get me wrong, the flat white was not slouching one bit. Also want to thank the owner! I spilled my first flat white all over myself and the floor on accident and he took it completely in stride. Handed us a roll of paper towel, appeared out of nowhere with a mop to handle the floor, then jumped on making me a second flat white immediately. Good, short morning conversations and delicious espresso. Wish they had some different pastry options, but the location is quick and easy to get in and out of. We made our way to Makawao after spending the morning at Haleakalá National Park - it was a surprisingly short drive. Having gotten up at 4am for the sunrise, we were in dire need of coffee, and Espresso Mafia had the best rating we'd ever seen for a coffee shop. It was the perfect stop for a caffeine fix and well-worthy of its full 5 stars. What an incredible find! While we didn't see many people walking around, Espresso Mafia was positively popping. That being said, it was still such a fun, lively vibe full of laughter and people just having a good time. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, which is always nice. Their menu is incredible. We had a hard time deciding what to get and initially settled on an affogato and a chai latte. The choice of espresso makes or breaks an affogato, and their espresso was perfect with the vanilla ice cream. Chai tea was delicious as well. We were so impressed by their drinks that we came back after lunch to try their coconut cold brew. Everyone needs to try this cold brew - this was the BEST we've ever had. Their house-made coconut syrup was so unbelievably delicious and the perfect compliment to the cold brew. I only wish we lived by here so I could order it again. If you're looking for pastries, aim to get here earlier in the morning. We showed up around 11am, and their case was nearly empty. So they must be great! Service was wonderful. I drink decaf and it's rare to find a place that makes excellent decaf espresso. A lot of places will mess it up but Espresso Mafia makes a good decaf cappuccino. Cappuccino has perfect balance of foam to milk ratio and espresso was more nutty & cacao than fruit/floral forward. I actually had his tiramisu latte yesterday, and as a black coffee drinker, his tiramisu syrup was perfectly balanced- tasted like the dessert without being overly sweet. I have been visiting this place since they were operating out of a cart on Baldwin Avenue. They moved into their home a few months ago. Parking is on the street. It is a favorite coffee stop for visitors and locals. The barista is the owner, and he enjoys talking to customers whether you are a regular or first timer. During one of my road bike cycling adventures, I climbed up to Makawao from Paia. On my way to Makawao, I biked through terrible weather as a strong storm front blew through the islands. Once I made it to town, I ended my ride at Espresso Mafia. This place is AWESOME! I loved the friendly vibes from the workers (and I think one of the people I interacted with was the owner.) We came to this place completely by chance! The bakery we were hoping to go to was closed for the month and my husband was in desperate need of coffee. We read the reviews and decided this was the spot. He ordered his usual coffee and the rest of us ordered oat milk chais and a hot chocolate for our toddler. Chai was yummy and spicy, just how I enjoy it. We loved the look and vibe, and there friendliness of the guys working the counter. Funny enough, my husband and the owner realized they knew each other from his gym we frequent when we're here every other year. We're obviously big fans of all their business ventures! Espresso Martini had amazing service, drinks, and aesthetics. I had the Honey Cream Latte (soy) and a taste of the Ube Latte. The honey cream has a sweet foam layered on top of smooth coffee. I'd add an extra shot of espresso for more coffee taste, this drink is on the sweeter side, but still delicious. The Ube latte had more coffee and undertones of coconut and ube. Both drinks priced fairly with about 12 oz served for $7! The staff, wife and husband operated were busy, but still made time to make small talk.
