I stopped by here yesterday for my morning coffee. Whenever I go on vacation I try to hit up a new coffee shop every morning and on this morning I ended up heading over to Espresso Mafia. We were heading back from a sunrise at Haleakalā when I decided to check Yelp for good nearby coffee places and this popped up, so we headed on over. This coffee shop is on Baldwin Ave in Makawao and the inside is pretty large with lots of seating. They also have a display case with baked goods over by where you order. After looking over the menu I ultimately decided on one of their specials, a cherry vanilla latte, which I don't think I have seen before in a coffee. After only a couple of minute wait, I had my latte and was out the door. My coffee here ended up tasting really good, almost like a cherry vanilla ice cream. The cherry flavor came first and that was followed by the sweet vanilla. While I know the coffee was there, it got lost a bit with the cherry vanilla flavoring. Still, I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. A cherry vanilla latte is a new combo for me, but I enjoyed it and only wish the espresso was a bit more pronounced. read more

I keep coming back for more - items I've tried recently that I love - the Spring Latte with cold pandan foam - SO good. If you haven't tried pandan before, you should jump on this opportunity. It's very ube/vanilla adjacent - very special. Also loving the Coco Cano which is an Americano made with coconut water and then a coconut cold foam on top which is just so delicious. Makawao, HI. A pretty darned good latte is served up here. Nice rich flavor and a bit of buzz to go. You must request a ceramic cup or you'll get a paper one. The people working here were pretty happy and animated. This vibe also included the girl taking my order avoiding my existence for as long as possible, while the joyful interaction with the barista ensued. On a return visit the barista gave my a one on one lesson on latte art, that was pretty cool. I'll see how well it works at home, but I'm pretty sure my Gaggia at home is unable to produce the quality of micro foam necessary to do this. read more

I went on a Tuesday I think and while there were people inside there was plenty of room to sit inside and relax. Inside is so clean and welcoming, plenty of seating available. The employees were so friendly and clearly knowledgeable! They explained in depth the process of how they make their Ube nitro to myself and my family (we are coffee lovers and often make our own at home). Now the Ube nitro was delicious, I mean just the look of it is stunning but it tastes even more beautiful than it looks! I didn't get any of the food but it looked amazing. I got the coconut latte with coconut milk and wasn't too impressed. It tasted almost sour so that was a bit of a surprise but maybe it was coconut water that was used. I should've asked more questions and not assuming what it would taste like compared to other coconut lattes I've had. It also tastes a little watered down. My husband got the Ube latte and enjoyed his. It wasn't overly sweet and had a nice Ube flavor. The only complaint he had was that it could have used more espresso. Rosemary and thyme sound absurd in latte, but I was very happily proven wrong. And don't get me wrong, the flat white was not slouching one bit. Also want to thank the owner! I spilled my first flat white all over myself and the floor on accident and he took it completely in stride. Handed us a roll of paper towel, appeared out of nowhere with a mop to handle the floor, then jumped on making me a second flat white immediately. We made our way to Makawao after spending the morning at Haleakalá National Park - it was a surprisingly short drive. Having gotten up at 4am for the sunrise, we were in dire need of coffee, and Espresso Mafia had the best rating we'd ever seen for a coffee shop. It was the perfect stop for a caffeine fix and well-worthy of its full 5 stars. What an incredible find! While we didn't see many people walking around, Espresso Mafia was positively popping. That being said, it was still such a fun, lively vibe full of laughter and people just having a good time. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, which is always nice. Their menu is incredible. We had a hard time deciding what to get and initially settled on an affogato and a chai latte. The choice of espresso makes or breaks an affogato, and their espresso was perfect with the vanilla ice cream. Chai tea was delicious as well. We were so impressed by their drinks that we came back after lunch to try their coconut cold brew. Everyone needs to try this cold brew - this was the BEST we've ever had. Their house-made coconut syrup was so unbelievably delicious and the perfect compliment to the cold brew. I only wish we lived by here so I could order it again. If you're looking for pastries, aim to get here earlier in the morning. We showed up around 11am, and their case was nearly empty. So they must be great! Service was wonderful. We were a tad worried the latter would be too sweet, but it was perfect *chef's kiss!* My espresso-obsessed Italian husband and I (also a coffee lover) approve! While waiting for our drinks, we talked story with the owners. Anthony was manning the espresso machine while one of his sons was taking orders (and later his wife Megan). I have been visiting this place since they were operating out of a cart on Baldwin Avenue. They moved into their home a few months ago. Parking is on the street. It is a favorite coffee stop for visitors and locals. The barista is the owner, and he enjoys talking to customers whether you are a regular or first timer. Cappuccino has perfect balance of foam to milk ratio and espresso was more nutty & cacao than fruit/floral forward.
