Before this current era of Best Buy's Geek Squad, PC vs Apple Guy, and the ever so common "I'm such a nerd" trend... There was Al's Comics and it's patrons the original nerds of yesteryear.. I'm proud to say I was part of that group that saved my paper route money for the newest X-Men, Spawn, and Punisher comic books that came out.. Comics were a big part of my early childhood and pretty much all of high school.. When I needed my fix I would always venture to Al's and be intimidated by the almost daunting selection of comics.. This was a warm friendly environment in which I could talk to other folks that shared my same love for the hobby.... Al and his son were and still are super cool guys that know the hobby and can help you find what you're looking for.. I am still a casual comic collector and was just in Al's the other day and it saddens me to see that the comics from my days have depreciated in value so much and there is such a push for comic heros to appear on the big screen instead of the comic book pages.... When I do get the itch to pick up a series or two of comics I always make sure to make Al's my destination..,,the location is nostalgic and still excellent in customer service... Side Note- When I made my last purchase at Al's I was given one of my selections for free because they were having such a hard time clearing their shelves... I don't live in Stockton anymore but when i did i always went to the comic shop every month to buy sonic comics. I even asked if they were hiring. It was in walking distance from my house. I didn't go out much when i first moved there since i was new to the city. But that comic shop is the best in Stockton. I still visit Stockton from time to time to see friends. I've gone to a lot of comic shops that are bigger (e.g. Fantasy Books in Livermore, A1 in Sacramento) and ritzier (e.g. Isotope in San Francisco); but by far, Al's is the most nostalgic for me. Going to Al's brings me back to my childhood of going to dumpy, dank joints where the owners not only knew about their product, but actually cared. Al and his crew (I think it's his son) have a passion for this dying art, and it's obvious whenever you talk to them. Further, for a small store, they tend to have everything I'm looking for during my weekly fix. Finally, my favorite thing about Al's is the lack of Dungeons and Dragons/Magic/Yu-gi Oh/Pokemon/trendy crap card game/etc tournaments...Al's is just comics. read more

I recently got back into comics and didnt even realize this gem of a shop was in town. Shop is run by a pleasant and friendly older gentleman "Al". I have never met his his son, but I hear he is just as friendly. But anyway this shop is 100% comics. WALL TO WALL. I was in search of some older Daredevil comics and was kinda bummed when he had very little in the front of the store. But he let me check out his massive back room of comics and I went bananas. This reminds me of how comic book stores were when I was little. One thing I will say, is you will have to search. Over time his stuff has gotten a little out of order. But that again is part of the appeal. While you are searching you will no doubt come across other gems! I love this place. read more

Als was the first and only comic shop I use to go to in Stockton. Although it seemed like a little hole in the wall place, it provided all that a kid could want and need in a comic shop. If I had kids, I would probably take them there as well. The only thing that I am disappoointed about is that they no longer sell trading cards (comic, baseball, basketball, football, etc.). But overall, I would still go there or recommend comic collectors to choose this place for your old comics. read more

The thing that makes Al's different from going to a bigger store to get comics is the experience. You step in and they have a huge selection and comics in good condition and orderly (rather than torn apart by little kids.) The guys here are very friendly and willing to help you with any questions or requests. In addition to the new comics, they also have a wide selection of older comics. Proud to say that I've been shopping at Al's since 1985. Al and his son Mike are the nicest, most unpretentious comic shop guys I've ever met. Always willing to chat about the characters, the economy, or the world in general - they make people feel comfortable when they walk in. Don't let the lack of visibility of shortboxes fool you. Just ask if you can go in the back and you'll find a treasure trove of stuff from the last 30 years - most of it at cover price or less. It's not organized in the most efficient way, but if you're having trouble finding a title, just ask Mike and he'll point you in the right direction. I have completed MANY collections over the years for FAR LESS than what it would cost to go elsewhere or buy online. Also, if you're a specialty collector, let them know. They tend to look out for stuff you may like and bring it to your attention. Do yourself a favor and patronize a true Stockton tradition. read more

I wouldn't suggest buying from here. Sign is falling out of place on the outside of a building, inside is dirty and they're rarely open - like they don't care either way. I just love coming to Al's Comics to buy Magic the Gathering booster packs. He is really up to date on his comics, card sleeves, deck boxes, and Magic cards. His prices are cheap compared to other shops. I appreciate the way how Al and his son would take their time and talk to you. Him and his son are really helpful. I love how they have $1 comics! My daughter and I visited this shop today and had a great experience! I went in specifically looking for some old comic classics, while my daughter was eying the My Little Pony selection. I eventually found a book I thought would be cool, Captain America. The comic was way before my time.. My daughter also found a book she thought was cool and the guy behind the counter asked if it would be her first comic. She replied "yes" and he said "you can have it!" It just made her day. My daughter kept saying it was her lucky day because after that we walked over to Yogurt My Way. We both opened our books and enjoyed our little findings. This might sound silly but I even enjoy looking at the different advertisements found in these old school comics.. Priceless.. Wish I would have at least asked the guy his name. Maybe it was Al? I've been a patron of Al's Comics since 1996. Al and his son, Mike, have always been great to me. If I needed a rare book to finish my collection, more often than not, Mike has had it for me. Al always takes the time to ask about my kids and how I'm doing. Nothing better than a family owned business. What I love too, is how they know what they have. Sure there are times they don't know and the scavenger hunt is on, but generally, they know and it's helpful to me. They have a great selection of comics, models, and vintage memorabilia. Plenty of toys and clearance comics for the kids. This is a straight up comic shop. A few WarHammer/Magic items but the real bread and butter is comics. If you need something special, like a poster, a model, or a figurine - just ask Mike. The best guys in the business.
