just called Al's for an idea whether I can bring my 2014 wrangler there for an estimate. he proceeded to tell me that he doesn't know anything until he sees the truck. pretty obvious but stated in a very rude way and then he hung up on my when I tried to set a time to bring it in. Al is an old school guy who will tell you what you are thinking because apparently he knows. He said that since I bought the vehicle already damaged that he doesn't even want to work on it because I must be looking fror a deal. I guess he does business only when he knows he can gouge customers who don't know anything about cars or the insurance company. That said I was very polite and he decided to hang up on me anyway. I have no problem paying his shop rate for good work but he is so judgmental that he hung up before we ever got that far. when I tried to call back he sent me to voicemail. I am actually on vacation in Rocky Point and was going to see if I could drive the jeep to him for an estimate before I made my way back to mn and leave the vehicle if it worked out. instead I will just bring it home and have it repaired by a gentleman I have been doing business with for over 30 years who does great work without the know it all piss poor attitude of a guy who is so arrogant because he knows he's the only game in town and undoubtedly takes advantage of the customers he should be serving.. What do yo do if your car constantly pulls to one side even after getting it aligned? You visit several body shops and inquire how to check the frame for straightness. That's how I learned of Al. He's good about meeting you and your car issue as long as you don't just drop in. Small, one man shop, needs to schedule an estimate. That's ok, I did it and you won't believe the cost! After looking for flaws, and not finding any, he offers to loosen enough bolts under engine and suspension to be able to move one of the front wheels 3mm. That little bit did make a noticeable reduction in the pulling. Now for the price, nothing! He chose to not charge even $20, saying something like "it's my shop, I can charge as I feel". I felt great. You hardly ever see someone work half an hour and not charge. So, like the other reviews say, NICE GUY AL! read more

I was considering the purchase of a truck with a salvage title. Before committing, I wanted to get the frame inspected and subsequently called two local, highly rated auto body shops. Both told me the same thing....."go see Al (Al's Unibody & Frame)" I called Al and told him what I needed, and he said to bring it in. I asked how much the inspection would cost? His reply (priceless): "I only charge people who are stupid enough to buy a salvage title car first, and then bring it in when they start having issues. If you're smart enough to inspect first, then it's a free service." When you arrive at Al's you are met by a pretty big, barking dog. She (Sophie) is a sweetheart and will be your friend for life if you scratch behind her ears -- but I digress. The inspection took about 30 minutes and was fascinating! The different measurements, how alignments are done, the difference between caster and camber, and the relationship between different parts of the car were extremely interesting. (Disclaimer: I am engineer and generally find this stuff interesting) Al made no judgement; he provided the facts and potential issues down the road. There are few people in this world that promise you a price, and a time to get something done and then out do themselves on both counts. Al is just such a person! So that is the short review, here is the story. On Dec 23rd a driver that for this review will remain nameless, turned left in front of my GMC Jimmy. His insurance company totaled my SUV over my objections... The adjuster estimated the damage to be nearly $4000. After consulting with my mechanic and 3 body shops, and looking for a replacement vehicle on Craigslist, I came to the conclusion that repairing it was still the best option, though it was looking to cost most if not all of what the adjusters estimate was. The third body shop said that they use Al's Unibody and Frame to straighten the frames on any vehicles that they work on. So with the suggestion that he should look at this first I gave him a call. Al answered the phone and told me to come on over. He put it up on his lift, grabbed his levels, then proceeded to show me what was going on, what he could do and that if I would like, he could not only straighten the frame but he could replace the bumper, grille and headlight. He gave me a very good price compared to the estimates I had in hand. He then did something completely unexpected... he asked if I wanted to do a some of the work myself to save a bit of the labor cost. After finding my jaw and replacing it back on my face I agreed to help. The details maybe over doing it for the review however it should be said that Al showed me what could be easily removed, brought me the tools and in short order the headlight, and grille were off the GMC, three of the bolts were out of the bumper cover. One remained as it was at a strange angle, to be removed after the frame was pulled straight. The letters G,M, & C that the body shops had priced at $100 were recovered from the broken grille, salvaged and ready for the new one. So this part of the story comes to and end, with $50 saved and a feeling that the "Jimmy" was in good hands. That was on Friday, Al told me that it would be ready by Wednesday. He called Monday to tell me that the tow hook that broke off in the crash could be replace by one in a junk yard he found for 15 dollars if I would like to go pick it up and bring it to him, or alternatively. they could deliver it for about $50 or I could get it new. I made my choice, the car was completed on Tuesday. The bill was an amazingly reasonable $1060.00. With about 30 years of experience Al knows what can be done, what makes sense to do, and tells me he won't do the job if he can't make it good enough that he would put one of his kids back behind the wheel. He gets all 5 stars from me, the work he did was what was asked of him, he beat his own estimate for completion in both time and money. He was so nice to work with, this isn't something you want to repeat... Having an accident sucks! Working with Al was the best part. If your reading this Al, Thank You again. read more

Al is an old school, use the right tools, use the right techniques, get the job done, and move on to the next one, expert with a lot of years of experience under his belt. He also learned how to do his job right from the very beginning within this very specialized profession. He apprenticed under another master, and not a hack, and it by God it shows it. He designed his shop from the ground up, and had it built to his specs. It's mostly just Al, so you don't have some kids screwing things up. Yes Phoenix, there are still honest, knowledgeable and reputable automotive repair shops in existence! I cannot say enough about Al's Unibody and Frame! After a brief phone conversation with Al on the phone describing a clunking sound in the front steering assembly of my 57 Chevy Belair I decided to take the car to him to see if he could identify the problem. I had taken the car to 2 other well known repair facilities in the valley before but both shops had very different opinions as to what the problem was and they both recommended extensive, costly repairs. One of the shops was convinced that my car's frame was compromised and needed to be repaired and reinforced. This diagnosis is what prompted me to contact Al and schedule an appointment for him to check out the integrity of the frame. I arrived at Al's Unibody and Frame at 10:30 in the morning and within 15 minutes not only did Al pinpoint the real problem of the "clunking" in the steering, he had it completely fixed in that time too! To top it off, he didn't even charge me!!! Who does that??? Ok so I'm very fortunate that the problem turned out to be something very simple (mounting bolts for the steering box had stretched) but after being told by other automotive specialists that I was going to be spending mega dollars to get the problem resolved, I was prepared to write the big check to get that annoying clunk fixed. Turned out that was not necessary thanks to Al's honesty and and his amazing knowledge of automotive suspension dynamics. I took my poor car to 4 different places (not exaggerating) and each time, I was told that something different was wrong with my car and each time the price to fix it went up. Desperate for someone to fix my car, I turned to Al. Al looked at my car for literally 10 seconds and had an idea of what might be wrong. NO ONE else saw what Al saw. After reading all the other reviews on yelp I decided to trust my car to Al, I figured it was gonna be either the best mechanic ever, or a total scheme with the kind of reviews it had. Lucky for me, it was the best I have ever had. I first called in to a messaging machine and left a message in which I hope they got to. I left it at around 9 Pm on a Friday. I received a call the next Monday in the morning. The lady that was speaking, which is Al's wife, was very courteous and polite. We were able to communicate about the car damage and the repair even though I am not very car talk friendly. I am one of those people you would sit down in front of a car, and I could tell you how to call triple a to check your battery. Sit me in front of a pc and I can turn it like it was brand new, and clean any virus. Cars on the other hand, not a clue. I had the car towed to the shop and it was entirely fixed up by yesterday - that weeks next Friday. The bill was very clear, and so was the discussion after the fact. Some drunken idiot totaled my 99 S10 4x4 Blazer that only had 90,000 miles on it. I used the other shops Al recommended and my 1999 Blazer is tighter and safer feeling than it had been before the accident where some half drunk moron backed into me, bending the frame almost 3 inches toward the driver's side and 1 3/4 inches to the rear, and putting in the emergency room. All pulled it all back straight again, and I went back to Jack's Front End Alignment (Jacks is who recommended Al to me, and Jacks is recommended by Al, so I go to the best I guess.) At Jack's, I had the whole front end rebuilt. New upper & lower control arms (New Moog Gusher ball joints & bushings), new GM OEM factory hubs & bearings, New Pro Forge inner and outer tie rod ends, new GM OEM factory bolts for the lower control arms, Moog +/- 2.6 degree caster camber plates, new Moog nuts and bolts for the new Moog CK upper control arms, a Phoenix Rack & Axle rebuilt GM factory axle passenger side, new Car Quest axle driver's side (yuck!), and the coup de grace, a brand new GM OEM factory lower steering column. The truck does not drift wander or hunt. It does not pull to one side, and there is just a teeny tiny bit of play in the steering wheel. IT'S JUST LIKE DRIVING A BRAND NEW $43,000 4x4 S10 BLAZER limited edition LT/LS! Slam on the brakes and it does NOT pull. It stops straight, drives straight and is a tight as a frog's a**! A little new weather stripping around the doors and it will be water tight, again. Yeah, when new, these S10s would pop your ears when you closed any door on the truck. Al had this Blazer done a day early and for $100 less than the maximum estimated cost. I paid about $540 for Al's expert services, and it was worth every penny. The new body parts line up like they are supposed to, the doors open and close again, and the truck will be taking me away to wonderful places again very soon. Al even walked me through the processes of getting the Blazer retitled as salvage and then retitled as restored salvage. God bless him. We need more people like Al in this world. If it's too sketchy to fix, Al simply will not do the job, and if it's borderline, he will let you know about it. He is a magician who knows the limitations of what he has to work with, and if the miracle can be safely performed. His techniques are old school. They rely on gravity, using spirit levels string lines, tape rules, and plumb bobs. I own tools like those for front end alignment. THEY WORK! They work great! You cannot knock gravity out of alignment, and you can test a spirit level in about 3 seconds. It takes half a day to realign a laser frame or front end alignment tool, and it is very easy to knock one out of alignment, or destroy it completely. The Pyramids were built using tools that relied on gravity to work. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. read more

Back in March 19' my 99 Expedition was insurance totaled in an head-on. With only 86k miles on her I decided to see if she could be resurrected. Having replaced the sheet metal and radiator support I headed to Al's with my fingers crossed knowing the frame was bent. Al made it very clear that he only works on the stuff he wants. He can do that based on his reputation and if he thinks it will be safe. Up on the rack he pointed out how far the frame was bent using guides hanging from the frame, lasers probably do this at most places. That said, I did not come here for the technology, I came to Al's for the experience, which is getting harder and harder to find. Thankfully Al agreed to fix our family truckster and at a very reasonable price. I ask Al if he did alignments too, he said no, he prefers others to do the alignments, that's how he knows the work was done right. How's that for integrity! As you can tell by the other reviews on Yelp (which Al does not follow or solicit reviews) his shop is one of those old time, do it the old way, and do it at a fair price and you don't need to advertise. Been driving it for over 2 months and it drives and tracks great. Would clearly recommend Al's. Make sure you make an appointment before you go. I am in retail and have off during the week, he moved his schedule to fit me in so I could get it repaired the next day which was my second day. He even let me pick up shocks and the oils needed so I could save money and put them in for no charge. Al is what people wish they could find, old fashion ethics and service, help the customer at a fair price.
