I visited recently, and they were still serving their "winter menu." It's one of those restaurants in a house, and even though it's a tasting menu, it really leans more toward the homey vibe. I was there on a weeknight and there were only two tables of diners for the first seating, and that included me. I think the $85 price tag for the 6-course tasting is a bit more than the level you get. The food was good but it wasn't eye-opening, didn't have any pricey ingredients, and I would say lacks some refinement. I would say this should be more in the $58-$64 range for what you get. Here's a course-by-course review of the winter menu: -- tien vua salad, classic Vietnamese light salad of crunch and tang. It was surrounded by pink shrimp crackers, arranged like how I remember the Chinese restaurants decorating their plate of roasted duck. Light and tangy. -- crab pintxo, a dungeness crab-artichoke crostini that was supposed to be a play on a banh mi. The toast was different a nicely toasted French baguette slice, and the minced dungeness had a meaty texture. The pickled carrot and cucumber had this 80s feel in presentation and was a bit challenging to eat in one bite. Flavor was on point. -- Puerto Phuket was a fried prawns dish that was supposed to be influenced by Mexican cooking. It was well fried shrimp on top of tobiko fried rice, and the only thing that was a hint of Mexican was the gaucamole that was around the fried rice. This was the least successful dish in terms of interpretation and the different parts working together. -- Seafood soup was a play on pho with sliced calamari serving as the "noodles." This was my favorite dish because it had nicely cooked lobster bits and the calamari "noodles" was fun to eat. It was also one of the spicier dishes, with the light pho broth heavily infused with jalapeno. This was totally on purpose, though, because before it came out my server kept asking me if I eat spicy food. And while not chili hot, it was permeating heat type of hot. I liked it but it might be too much for some. -- Tamarind Tango was the main course of petite filet mignon served with a microgreens salad. Nice tamarind fish sauce glace on the meat and it was nice and tender, but again, nothing really surprising both in flavor or presentation. It was pretty predictable. -- poached Bosc pear in red wine for dessert with vanilla ice cream in "soil." This was fine, the pear was a bit al dente for me, I like my poached pear really tender. I actually think the cooking is good but because it's not as creative or refined, they might be better off just serving regular course sizes and let people enjoy a home-style dinner instead of trying to play the tasting menu game. The parking lot was completely full, so after circling around and eventually finding street parking, we figured the place must be popular. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the high point of the experience. The main restaurant was fairly full, so we were seated in a large, dark bar area in the back. And then... nothing happened. For more than 30 minutes. Eventually, a waiter appeared and took our order. Then another 30+ minutes passed before the food arrived. Somehow, even our iced tea didn't make it to the table until the food did. All told, we spent roughly an hour sitting at an empty table without so much as a beverage, and about 90 minutes from the time we arrived until we actually had food in front of us. At that point, the whole experience was becoming almost comical. We ordered a cod burger with fries, a Caesar salad, onion rings and an iced tea. The cod burger was okay. Nothing memorable, but edible. The Caesar salad was actually good. The fries, however, arrived cold, soggy and thoroughly greasy -- quite an accomplishment considering how long we waited for them. The onion rings apparently embarked on a separate journey altogether, because they never arrived. By then, we'd lost the will to ask about them and just gave up. The grand total for one cod burger with cold fries, a small Caesar salad and an iced tea? $40.00! We mentioned the long wait, forgotten food and other problems to our waiter. He was sympathetic and explained that they were short staffed, which we understand can make things difficult. But being short staffed doesn't make a 90-minute lunch, no drinks for an hour, cold soggy fries and forgotten food any less disappointing -- especially at those prices. By the end, we weren't even angry. The whole thing had crossed over into comedy. Needless to say, on future drives between Oregon and Seattle, we'll be finding a different midway lunch stop.
