I was at opening day 2/21/2026, and there were some significant operational issues. I have skied here before and always had a good experience. Part of the problem was the heightened demand from the 4 feet of snow dumped on the resort in the preceding week. The other part was mechanical issues that affected the operation of both chairlifts. The measure of good customer service is what happens when things go wrong. I contacted the resort and they were very apologetic, and they made things right with me immediately. I will just leave it there, and mention that I will be back to ski there many times because you are treated like family at ALTA SIERRA. I wish them a great season! read more

I went the last weekend Alta Sierra was open in 2020. I'm new to the snow scene and since I was out in Bakersfield for a birthday party, I made an extra step to get some snow time at Alta Sierra. Bakersfield is 1.5 hours away, on a very winding road. Stayed in Kernville overnight, what a cute town! The ski resort was about a 30 minute drive away. The parking lot is a dirt lot. Bathrooms are high end outdoor units. Warming hut is a cute building that is super warm. My husband camped out here while I was out on the snow. Being a newbie, I knew that I wanted to take a class. Ended up being I took a private snowboarding class. I can't remember the name of my instructor? He was awesome and patient. He instilled things I needed to learn, went out 2 weeks later to Dodge Ridge in Pinecrest, CA and did much better. Thank you Alta Sierra, I hope that you get more snow and have a longer ski season this upcoming year. I'd like to come back and visit. The people out on the mountain were super nice and forgiving of me falling all over the place. I didn't feel any negative energy. Went to Alta sierra ski resort and was a little weary due to the reviews. However, being a Bakersfield resident this was the closest place. Had a great time on our ski trip. The staff was all super friendly and helpful, from the rental shop to the food area to the tub station. The price to ski here is also cheaper than other places in California. Would recommend and will go again. read more

My first time skiing here was when I was in middle school.... A long time ago. I wore Rocky Mountain jeans and a sweatshirt. This little hill has survived many a rough sparse winter yet found a way to make it possible for locals to have a little taste of snow when possible. Super friendly staff! We went in late Feb. so there wasn't a huge crowd which was also nice. Signed up for a lesson and was definitely worth the price/time. Would certainly recommend as a nice alternative to some of the more popular spots like Big Bear, Mammoth, or Tahoe. read more

Josh, the manager lets the people who work in the restaurant close down the kitchen as soon as upper management disappears. They have appropriate excuses to deny food availability based on existing policies that allow for early shutdow,, however the circumstances they claim for shutting down the kitchen don't exist, but rather they just dont want to work And in particular want to go home as fast as they can as soon as the regular closing time approaches. So they close early so they can clean and leave. and so they leave us with NO FOOD other than French fries and beer. So you spend thousands of dollars on your vacation, ikon pass, airfare,etc, because Park City is a destination! But there won't be any lunch available on the mountain. Not for you or your kids as long as Josh can get away with claiming any axceptable excuse possible. read more

Came up for their open day of the season and had the absolute worst experience I have ever had at a ski resort. I dont even know where to start. The ladies in the ticket office have no idea what they are talking about. They seemed just so misinformed about anything about the mountain. And when you ask to many questions or have a complaint they become just rude about the matter. The lift tickets for adults is way to expensive for a resort that has only 2 lifts and like 6 runs. The food in the warming hut was the only thing that was semi decent. But even then they made our orders incorrectly. I asked for no onions and twice they put onions on my wrap. Much better served going to Waterman or China peak. Save your time and money. read more

It is a great small resort. Incredibly friendly staff. We went there on a Saturday and the kids rode the tubes. We went back the next day and the kids took lessons. It might as well have been private lessons since it was just my two kids. The instructor let me help him and the kids were mastering the big slope by midday.... Awesome time!!! read more

I visited a few days before christmas of 2021. It was a spontaneous birthday trip to learn to ski. We showed up super late in the day and needed rentals. The women in the ticket office were so accommodating and kind. They gave us a great deal since we were only going to get 1.5-2 hours on the snow. The folks who helped us at the rental desk were knowledgable and friendly as well. The ski lift operators were very encouraging and one of them even taught us all how to properly get off the lift, which they would never do at a big resort. As a beginner, I had a great time and felt lots of positive energy here! I would return if ever in the area. read more

Horrible customer service at this resort, and apathy among the staff and management. The website has a ribbon on the top indicating weather, etc..., but that ribbon hides important information about directions, so don't trust Siri. When I brought it to their attention, the manager said, "It's beyond our control.", which is ridiculous, and she didn't seem to care that we were affected by wrong directions. Also, I checked the website before leaving for the resort, and it didn't indicate that it was closed for that day. Unfortunately, we didn't find out until we got there. When I mentioned this to the manager, she was also apathetic about it. Her response was, "Well, we told the news stations." I asked to speak to her supervisor for additional feedback, but never received a response (go figure). Lastly, when you call, be prepared for the phone to ring and ring without anyone picking up. read more

In this day and age to experience racism because of the color of my skin Please share this post to bring awareness to this issue. Planned a trip to Alta Sierra Ski Resort for some snow boarding lessons. Upon planning the trip and of course planning to take some much needed time off from the the jail to be with my family, I reviewed their website and found that their lessons are $50/hour for ages 6+ and per the website their rentals-board and boots are included (I attached screen shots). It sounded like a steal and almost too good to be true so logically I contacted the place itself. I contacted 7603764186 as posted on the website on a weekday. A gentleman answered the phone so I explained we were planning this trip and wanted to make sure the prices as listed on the website were correct, $50/hr with rental gear included, the person on the phone stated "that's correct" I proceeded to ask how I can purchase tickets for which his response was "oh we're not even open right now I'm not usually here, so call back during business hours and the girls will help you out or look online." I figured we can purchase the tickets on arrival as we planned to arrive pretty early. Upon arrival it turns out the price for 1 hour lesson with rentals and lift is $155. I spoke to the lady who was at the front desk and explained what I saw and what happened.....she said if I could show them what I saw they would honor it. After locating wifi and locating what was on the website.....it turns out she didn't honor it apparently it wasn't proof enough. Some of the employees there were very kind and said they usually hike up the prices during the season and that they didn't really agree either. After being told the price originally given would not be honored the clerk contacted the general manager. This entire time there's been several people in and out of the shop with whom these people have been ever so nice, helpful, and polite to, it just also coincided that they were all caucasian. While standing there waiting for the general manager to arrive I even witnessed them sell a "half price ticket" to another customer just because he asked (regular price when not in season I presume)......again he was caucasian. When the general manager arrives, there's no common courtesy that was being shown as with all other caucasian customers....only a man who walked in straight to the back of the counter....and begins directing himself to me as follows: "there's no way I would have told you $50 I've been here for 5 years and I wouldn't have said that." I said, "sir do you remember speaking to me on Thursday or friday? I called specifically asking if these things were included." Before I could finish he had already said, "no I dont remember." So I said, "sir I have no intention of lying to you, this is just what happened." And his response was "and I told you to call during business hours or go online." [Funny how he remembered that part of the conversation all of a sudden.] He then proceeded to say, "I'm done with this conversation, we're done." As he walked out of the building. He could not look me in the eyes, he did not have even the remote ability to be courteous, in fact the assumption was made that he was the general manager because he didn't even introduce himself. The way he and his staff treated ME the only brown person in the room in comparison to the way the caucasian people were treated made it evident what the problem was. I couldn't stomach the humiliation of being this U.S citizen, in my born country, a nurse, who proudly serves the geriatric population as well as side by side with the department of corrections in Kern County as a Psychiatric nurse.....to be looked down on and not even respectable enough to be addressed as a human being let alone a public servant. My heart hurt and feeling speechless I walked away in tears. My sister proceeded to walk inside behind me and asked for the owner's information to file a formal complaint. The staff there Diana, and Nicole refused to provide any information, instead they called back out the general manager who we found out is named Bryan Kelly who presented with the same behavior now raising his voice and stating he did not have to provide any information, and that he would take the complaint on himself, stating, " what are you accusing me of?" As depicted by the Merrium Webster dictionary this man showed to be an intentioned bigot ( a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance) & has been chosen to be in charge of the staff and this facility. If you are brown, please avoid the heart ache and humiliation of going to this place & please share so others can avoid it as well. read more

This review is for the tube park. We don't ski or snowboard so we cannot write a review about the slopes for skiing or snowboarding. Alta Sierra Ski Resort was formerly called Shirley Meadows Ski Resort. We have been going to this area to take the kids to play in snow for a while... since our oldest daughter was a baby. This resort is located in Wofford Heights. About 15 miles east of Glenville. From Bakersfield, there are two ways to get there. You can go via Glenville on Hwy 155 or the canyon on Hwy 178. I hate the drive through the canyon so we always go via Glenville. The Resort is open when they get enough snow. If you check their website or follow them on Facebook, they post updates when they get a good snowfall as to when they will be open. Our family loves the tube park. It's so convenient and the kids enjoy it. Tube park bracelets are $30 per person for 2 hours (last year and this year's rate). Can get pricey for a family with a lot of kids. But there are some advantages to coming here and paying the fee... there's no need to bring your own tube (tubes are provided with the $30 fee)... not having to hike up the hill pulling your tube (yes, you sit on your tube and the lift pulls you back up the hill)... having restrooms with running water at the resort... and there's a warming hut to keep warm and purchase some hot drinks and food. Food is pretty affordable but I can't comment on quality or taste. We only bought hot drinks. They do allow outside food and tables are provided both inside and outside the warming hut. If you haven't been, I say go check it out and just bring your own snow toys & sleds if you decide to find a spot along the road instead. It is worth it to check out and try in my opinion. And if you really don't want to pay the fee, you can drive back down Rancheria Rd to Greenhorn Summit and find a good spot to play in the snow. There are porter-potties available and some picnic tables. Just watch out for snow removal equipment parked around there. read more

What a wonderful day my boys and I had at Alta Sierra yesterday. As an experienced skier the terrain was fairly basic but wonderful for a family to enjoy together. The employees, from the ladies in the ticket office to the wonderful guys running the lifts, the cute cookie ladies in the warming hut and even ski instructors (we didn't take lessons but he was all smiles) were amazing. They seemed like a big family just waiting and happy to welcome ours. The slopes got pretty icy later in the day but it didn't matter it was a perfect day. We are keeping fingers and toes crossed for more snow soon. We will definitely be back! read more

I'm not sure about skiing or snowboarding but the tubing is a waste of money. We paid $30 and the tubes wouldn't go down the hill. We returned to the sales office within 5 minutes and were told there are no refunds. What a sham. Save your money and find a hill outside of Alta Sierra. To add insult to injury the manager wanted my son to prove that the tube wouldn't go down the hill. My son obliged and we still DID NOT GET A REDUND. several other parents were also upset. read more

This was my first time here; second time snowboarding. I was really disappointed with the staff here. They were very rude and I felt rushed every time I asked for anything. My husband and I rented gear here. The gear is the worst I've ever rented! I could have found better gear at a second hand store. We felt like things were too expensive for what we got. This location has a "warming hut" which is very small. The food is a bit expensive, so I'd recommend that people pack some food to eat. There aren't too many parking spaces here so you'd have to come early to get a good spot. Everyone must purchase a lift ticket. There is no bunny hill for beginners to practice on. Don't expect much from this resort. read more

I finally made it to ski/ snowboard here this winter, and this place was awesome! People here are also friendly. I had my kids take private lessons for ski and snowboard, and both instructors were so patient with my 5 year-old and 8 year-old kids. Only after 1 hour of private lessons, they were able to ski/ snowboard on their own! The beginner's course was perfect to practice. Since I had my kids with me, I did not try their intermediate and advanced courses. We were their on MLK's 3 day weekend, but it was not overcrowded. Many of skiers/ snowboarders were beginners here. Prices are very reasonable, and the place is small enough to just leave your shoes right there where you rent your equipment. Wish we lived close to here... read more

This is a hidden gem! A close and convenient drive from Bakersfield and a treat to visit every time it's open. I've never had a bad experience with the staff or the facility. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We have had snow boarding lessons and ski lessons there and the instructors both times were phenomenal, patient, professional and truly masters of their craft. Came up to Alta Sierra Ski Resort with my husband and kids to go tubing and it was horrible. We paid 30 dollars for each of our kids to go tubing and we were ripped off. It was not worth it. My daughter, 6yrs old was so excited about seeing the snow and sliding down the hill. Unfortunately, the first time down she got stuck on the side of the hill and the 2nd time she got stuck and ran into buy a adult who was also tubing. Not one of the employees that were running the tubing hill went to help her. And on too of that they had the parents blocked off so we couldn't get to her. By this time I was so in disbelief. I couldn't understand why they didnt have a employee on the middle of the slope for all the kids that were stuck in the middle and being rammed into. Well, the only good thing I can say is that my daughter was not severely hurt and that I didnt see anyone else child severely hurt. But then agian, I was only there for about 45 mins. And the only reason I selected one star was because the scenery was nice. read more

First time ever snowboarding and we paid for lessons, and rental equipment. The price for all 3 of us was very decent and the instructor Keith was amazing and patient. He kept his cool the entire time even when I thought I was never going to get it. He helped my daughter who was having a really hard time. By the time he was done with her she was able to to go off and was really good at it. I got it after a while and over all I have to say the staff is all so super friendly and helpful every step of the way and nobody has an awful attitude like some places where you can tell they hate their job. You guys are all amazing and thank you for such an amazing experience! We'll be back soon! read more

I love Shirley Meadows! Sure there's only a handful of runs and it only has one and a half lifts, but it's great for what it is; cheap and close. I love the small town feel of it and I love that despite there being only 12 skiers/snowboarders on the mountain at any one time they still check passes at the lifts. I have grown up at the lake and this was the first ski resort i ever went to and learned at. I have been coming here ever since and it is honestly my favorite ski resort. It is super affordable and it is close to other ski resorts for the people of ridgecrest and bakersfield. Everyone is super nice when i go there and i love being able to see so many families going there and having a blast like i did with mine throughout my childhood. This place has a perfect are for people who are just beginning how to ski and snowboard, and it also has many tougher slopes, jumps, and rails for the more experienced riders. There is also a really cool tube park that families absolutely love. I have seen a lot of changes to the resort over the last few years including the integration of many fun activities and competitions for their customers to participate in. Its affordable, has everything any skier or boarder needs whether they are experienced or just learning, it doesn't take long to get there, and it is not as crowded as other resorts.
