In the 2 years since we've been here nothing has changed. All aspects of the experience were outstanding, including the food and service. We shared the Arancini appetizer and each had a small pasta entree. Everything was excellent. The dining room was not full, so the noise level was lower than usual. We sat in the bar. Everything at Alta Via was top notch! They have these wonderful half servings of each of their pastas that allows you to try several different kinds. They start out the meal with focaccia bread and an oil/butter mixture that is so delicious that we ordered seconds of that. Even though they didn't have the limoncello cocktail on the menu, we were able to order it anyway...so refreshing! We had the crispy Brussels sprouts which are so worth ordering, the Ravioli (super fluffy cheese inside), the bolognese, pappardelle (the noodles were so delicious), and the vodka sauce pasta. Everything was delicious, but the raviolis were the best! We finished our meal off with the olive oil cake sundae. The cake was so wonderful! At Bakery Square they make a nice 14 inch round pie. It's a well done, crispy pie that outclasses a lot of Pittsburgh offerings, which tend to be floppy and oily. Pair it with the chopped salad, which is an amazing mix of greens, mozzarella, Soppressata and pine nuts. read more

They clearly hired a top notch sound engineer to have that open industrial feel without the echo chamber level 100 volume that so often comes with that design. We got: -table bread: focaccia served on a cute wood tray ith olive oil and a pinch bowl of rosemary sea salt. First tray was stale. Second was perfect. -under the Tuscan sun: aperol, rum thyme. Refreshing on a humid summer evening. -ricotta toast: those first few bites into the warm bread were tasty. Halfway into the toast, you just get mouthfuls of ricotta with nothing to cut through it. Best split between 4 people, not 2. -the radiatori: a delightful combination of mint, chili, and lamb -the cavatelli: very rich pesto based dish with sausage and shredded broccoli. We eat at Alta via (fox chapel) often and usually the service and food are excellent. Last night was terrible, however. Our waiter was rude and seemed annoyed to be working. The food took over an hour to arrive and when we raised concerns we were told that the kitchen was short staffed. They could have apologized, sent over a glass of wine or comped our appetizers -- any of those steps would have helped. Instead they did nothing. We won't be going back for a while. read more

This is my favorite place to take my favorite people. The atmosphere is relaxing and romantic. It really makes me feel like I'm somewhere special. I feel like I always get the same things but everything is just unbelievably delicious. The bread the pasta the lemon cello Martin. The tiramisu and espresso is my favorite. Popped into Alta Via to take advantage of the date night for two. A friend had suggested/sent pictures of their meal and it looked AMAZING. Naturally had to try. Ordered the following weekend and was not disappointed in the slightest. Never really in this area but decided to take a little drive and get the takeout option. Stepping into the place, you can see the elegant scenery with socially distanced groups eating around restaurant. Can't put my finger on it but could tell the ambiance felt great. I have to tip my hat to whoever made that short rib pasta. Still dreaming about it weeks later. Could also use more of that gnocchi in my life. First off the atmosphere here is very nice and relaxing and decorated nicely too. Good menu with many great sounding pasta dishes. My wife and I shared a Chopped salad with celery seed vinaigrette which was very good. Mains were Spaghetti with crab meat. My wife had the half portion while I had the full portion of Lumache which is beef and pork bolognese. A lady near us heard us asking our waitress the size difference and showed us her spaghetti with card, half portion and she only ate half. Now don't get me wrong the food tasted great however I was very disappointed with the "fool" portion because it fooled me. I was starving after I finished and I forced myself to eat slow. Our waitress Selina was wonderful but lead me a stray with the size. $34 for pasta is on the higher side but if it's good and filling I'm more than willing to pay for it. We had several plates of bread which was good and I had two Guinness. We also ordered the chocolate cake for dessert primarily my wife ate that which is surprising. She's 105 lbs and I know she wasn't full after that. I stopped at Baskin Robins for my dessert Overall good experience and next time I'd order a few appetizers. read more

One of my all-time favorite Italian restaurants in Pittsburgh. This is my family's favorite for any celebration. Went for lunch today. The fettuccine already " large portion" was very small. The food lacked flavor cheese garlic etc. We had focaccia which didn't have any spices added like garlic, or rosemary.they provided a small 2 inch amt of butter and olive oil mixture and supposed to have rosemary which I didn't taste. The Creme Brulé was very good however not worth $ 12.00. Never offered to refill ice tea or coffee. The waiter was very attentive. I had pasta, 1 small glass ice tea, shared foccia Creme Brule. Bill just for me with tip $ 80.00 I've had a much better meal at The Lot in Oakmont. Home made pasta was ok. I wouldn't waste your money at this place. With that said I'm Italian and have been to Italy and the food was no where near traditional Italian cooking. If you want authentic Italian food, go to Joey Tambellini's across river. read more

This is a hidden gem on the side of a strip mall. It's easy to miss, as it's a bit tucked in there. The place is beautiful inside, the food is great, and the staff is super attentive without being overbearing! It's not cheap, but not crazy either. Prices are high but the portions are quite sizable. We came here to celebrate a special occasion and were not disappointed! Their complimentary foccacia bread is delicious, though would've been better had it been served warm IMO. We love the Big Burrito Group. We've been to all their restaurants and celebrate all important life events there from birthdays to anniversaries to retirement. They have some of the best restaurants in town. Out of all the restaurants they have, Alta Via is by far their best. My husband is half Italian and his mother cooked Italian Food for most meals. He's very tough on Restaurant Italian Food and hates to pay a lot of money for it. However, he also loved it. We originally came on my birthday Big Burrito Coupon. That gave us the freedom to try out multiple things on the menu and really get a feel for the place. We had a smorgasbord. Started off with their creamy burrata that truly melts in your mouth along with the crusty crostini and sundried tomato spread that it comes with. That alone made us so happy. Then we decided to try several half portions of their pastas. Our favorite is the cacio e pepe (lighter and more delicious version of Alfredo), which is light, decadent and sinful. I dream about it frequently. We also loved their pasta cacciatore with sausage. The sausage was some of the best sausage we've ever had. I liked the gnocchi but didn't like it as much as I wanted to. The tagliatelle with short rib was also very good. I'm obsessed with short rib and have to get it every time I see it. It was so tender. We came again with cousins and had most of the things I described above plus the mozzarella and prosciutto. It was amazing. I'm obsessed with prosciutto and could have just eaten that and the burrata. Someone else in the restaurant got the artichoke. It looked really good and they said it was delicious. However I mistook the lemons for potatoes so don't make my mistake. The saffron arancini was also delicious. Very savory. I would ask what the portions are for each dish. For example the chicken dish full portion is a whole chicken. Went for dinner for two and the combination of 3 chicken, rigatoni, fettuccine (smaller sizes) was nice portion wise to try the pastas and meat. Very gorgeous restaurant! Probably too gorgeous for the location. It's tucked away by a gas station on Freeport road. The waitstaff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Several vegetarian options on the menu which really surprised me. I ordered a cauliflower/brussel sprout dish that had a strong smoked flavor. I enjoyed it and think it's pretty unique. I honestly couldn't tell what the very strongest flavor was, though. Almost like a vinegar taste but not quite. For my entree I ordered the rigatoni. Very simple but pleasant. The table bread was also very tasty. I think if the rigatoni had just a slightly more flavorful sauce, this place would be 5 stars. read more

The fried calamari had the perfect amount Of batter and crunch and was nice, bright, and zingy thanks to the lemon. Winter green salad was fresh and showcased seasonal produce such as pomegranate and squash. We loved the pasta selections and opted for two of the smaller sizss which actually were quite generous. The short rib farfalle was a highlight. Branzino had wonderfully crispy skin and paired great with the light herby green sauce. My partner and I shared most and the folks at Alta via considerately split the salad and Branzino onto two separate plates which was a considerate touch. Tiramisu was delicious! I was recently here for a surprise birthday dinner. The ambiance is great for couples & dates, so it made our group of girls stick out a little. There wasn't one big reason for losing a star - just a few little things like not frequently filling water, ruining our cake surprise by asking the whole table when we want the cake brought out... small stuff. We showed up to Alta Via to belatedly use my Big Burrito Restaurant Group Birthday card (my birthday was this past sunday) and honestly, there's nothing keeping it from being 5 stars. But, there's also nothing that screams "WOW Alta Via is incredible." In short, if you want good Italian style food that won't make you feel overly full but leaves you satisfied, that's Alta Via. We split the Brussels Sprouts and Roasted Cauliflower to start and loved the flavors and everything about the dish. It was different and great. Next, my partner got the Ravioli and I the Pappardelle. The short rib alongside mine was perfectly done and the meal on a whole was mazing fresh and tasty. Her Ravioli was also great. It was actually described a smidge differently on the menu in house than online, but it was really great. We ended our night with the excellent Hazelnut-chocolate torte. One our way back we commented that Alta Via is probably our second favorite Italian restaurant we've been to in the general pittsburgh area other than Girasole. Honestly, my only nitpicks are that the tableware used to serve our main courses seemed less designed for pasta (moreso soup) which led to even the full portion (as opposed to half) looking comparatively small. I wonder if you'd even be full after a half portion. Also, whenever they renovated the building to become Alta Via, they made a weird choice of tinting all the windows and doors. It's deceptive at first because their door doesn't stand out and it just struck me as a weird choice. I can't imagine there'd be that many bright lights shining in from the cross street or the GetGo across the street. read more

We went for brunch. Oh my! The dining room is low limit and pretty with lots of banquettes. The bar, with drinks made with care and from scratch (no Bloody Mary mixes here!) is beautiful. Friendly helpful staff. To start, we shared the fritto misto - calamari and rock shrimp with lemon aioli. Hot crispy and fabulous! I had a crab and scallion omelet that arrived on a hot plate and full of air - a really great classical omelet. My husband went for the short rib omelet. I stopped by here a couple of Friday nights ago with my wife and another couple for dinner. We had made reservations a month in advance (that's all that you are allowed to do) and I had to put my CC in to make the reservation. Little did I know that i would have been charged $25/person if we didn't show up, which wasn't a problem but should have been advertised somewhere. In any case, my wife and I arrived about 5 minutes before our reservation and our table was ready for us. The inside of Alta Via is decent sized although it is definitely smaller than a lot of the other Big Burrito restaurants I have been too. I didn't really notice much of the restaurant except for our table which consisted of a 3 person booth with a single chair and then some interesting looking wallpaper near us. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to split the fried calamari for an appetizer which the menu described as fried calamari with crispy Meyer lemons, a parsley aioli and a gremalata. Since that was our appetizer it came out first and was really good. The breading on the calamari was nice and light but flavorful while the calamari itself was cooked perfectly. I also really enjoyed the fried thinly sliced Meyer lemons which allowed you to get a nice pop of acidity. Then for our entrees my wife and I decided to split 3 small sized pastas: malfaldine, radiatori and the potato gnocchi as well as a roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. The menu describes the malfaldine as coming with mushroom bolognese with fresh ricotta , the radiatori as coming with braised Elysian Fields Lamb, Mint, Calabrian chili's and pecorino Toscano, the potato gnocchi as coming with a fennel pesto, and toasted walnuts, Grano Padano Riseva and the roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts as coming with banana peppers, basil, sunflower seeds and crispy garlic. Whenever our meals came to us we only received 2 of the pastas and the vegetable and I thought the third, the potato gnocchi, was on the way. It wasn't though and by the time our waitress checked back in with us 15 minutes or so later, most of the food was gone and so I just checked to make sure it wasn't on the bill. She did offer us a free dessert on her since it was her mistake but we didn't end up taking advantage of that. In any case the pastas here were both really good. On the radiatori the lamb was cooked perfectly and paired nicely with the mint while the Calabrian chili's added a good kick of heat to the dish. Meanwhile on the malfaldine the mushroom bolognese was incredible tasting with a deep and rich mushroom flavor and the ricotta was pretty good too. What I didn't understand was the roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. It wasn't easy to see normal sized pieces sprouts of the cauliflower and they looked more like a garnish than the main part of the dish. The spice level on it was quite high too and the other couple who had also ordered it left over half of it there. The bottom line for me is that I might stop by here again in the future. Alta Via certainly has some good pasta but the rest of my experience was a bit of a let down between not receiving the gnocchi (and not getting checked on for a long time) and not really understanding the roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower dish. read more

My family and I came to Alta Via on New Years Eve for dinner. We had reservations so were seated right away. The hostess was very friendly and our waitress was very accommodating. She knew the menu extremely well and was able to answer all of our questions about the different menu items. I enjoyed the fancy yet lowkey ambiance of the dining area. We shared the mushroom appetizer, which was mixed with smoked mozzarella, pine nut, and crispy sage. For dinner, I got the eggplant parmesan appetizer with an order of bucatini. The eggplant was crispy with burrata perfectly melted on top. The bucatini was cooked al dente and tossed in a creamy white sauce. What's for dinner? Salmon + beans & greens!!! For my drinks I had Muscato!!! Yum!! ‍ Meal specs: The Salmon came with eggplant, fennel caponata, crispy capers & lemon!!! The salmon was cooked medium & was good!! It had a nice little crisp to it!! The eggplant mixture wasn't bad. The eggplant was a little over cooked for my liking!! It was sort of mushy!! Every bite was accompanied with some salmon to help! The beans & greens where made with cannellini beans, parmesan brodo and pine nut pesto. Critic: the beans could of been cooked longer. Some where perfectly cooked, some where undercooked & had a bit of a crunch to them. For me, that's not ideal!! It would be fantastic if it was uniformly cooked minus the crunch!! Fresh take on northern Italian fare. Menu items can be shareable and served family style and come out in whatever order you'd like. The brussels sprout salad, cacio pepe and Florentine steak were the highlights of a wonderful meal! We capped off the meal with the homemade vanilla gelato, it was unbelievable. As someone who grew up eating Mad Mex, I was so excited to try Big Burrito's newest concept. If there is one thing Big Burrito does exceptionally well its a good consistent experience across all their restaurants. You always know the caliber of service and food you will be getting, and this was no exception. There's a lot to unpack so we'll go one at a time. Atmosphere: In my opinion, this is something Big Burrito does better than anyone else. Definitely a very nice space, the amount of light was good and dark enough to make it feel cozy, and the music was loud enough to create a fun atmosphere but quiet enough to still talk. The bar area is super cool and you can either specify you want to be there when reserving, otherwise it's first come first serve. Drink: We got the house wine which was good for a house wine. It was also good to see some local craft beers on the menu, but it would be nice to see a few more (it's an Italian restaurant though, I get it). Also, they have super interesting cocktails which I didn't get around to this time but will definitely be trying next time. Food: As usual, very interesting dishes with a different flare that Big Burrito does so well. Though the menu leans on the more expensive side, what I loved was there is an option to get half plates of the pasta which ended up being a perfect amount after the appetizers. I got an olive oil cake for dessert, which I know sounds kinda odd, but it was so good. Bonus: Bill Fuller (Big Burrito executive chef) was walking in and out of the kitchen and we were all starstruck from seeing a real life celeb in person. Definitely worth the trip overall. This is the newest concept from the Big Burrito Group. The space is beautiful. They did a really nice job with the decor. We went on a Friday night and it was very busy. I would highly recommend a reservation, especially since it's a newer restaurant. The cocktails and food were delicious. The Italian Mule was a great and a refreshing twist in a classic. The Brussel sprout salad was also delicious. We split it and they split it between plates to serve it even though we didn't ask them to, which was very nice. We also had the spaghetti and the swordfish. The swordfish was delicious, but the spaghetti was only okay. The breadcrumbs kind of took over and you could hardly taste the lemon. It could've used some cheese or something else to elevate the flavor. The service was great- fast and attentive. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back! read more
