I heard great things about the Italian food at Legends and had to try it for myself. When we arrived, it wasn't busy at all, which I liked. The inside is cute and cozy, and the menu is simple and straightforward. Our waitress was friendly, shared the specials of the day, and provided excellent service. We ordered a pizza as an appetizer, and I got the chicken Parmesan along with the red velvet cake. The entree and appetizer came out hot, fresh, and satisfying. Earlier this month I got to try this well-established eatery when friends invited me to dinner. Between the company and the food, it was a great evening at Legends. Given this place's popularity my friends made reservations for us, although they ended up being unnecessary. Our group ate here on a Monday, which was seemingly the perfect day to visit. Despite Legends being such a small and cozy establishment, it never filled up during our meal (which I appreciate because I don't think I'd like the noise levels when all the tables are in use). The menu itself is short and sweet. Legends regularly serves a handful of appetizers, special dishes, and pastas; and the waiters will tell you the latest specials during your visit. A special is exactly what I went with for my first meal here, because how could I say no to scallops and risotto? I was VERY happy with my choice - any restaurant that makes tasty scallops is a good one in my books. The risotto was top notch, too! And the meal came with a side salad, so I did not leave hungry. While I was too full to order my own dessert after all that (plus bread!), my friends were kind enough to share a bite of their cake at the end of the meal. Someone else said Legends makes their desserts in-house, which explains why that cake was also absolutely delicious. Unfortunately this restaurant seems to be a popular one, so while I'd love to just pop in for cake and coffee sometime, I'm not sure how easy that would be...maybe I'll get lucky if I stop in on a Monday again. Fantastic! Met up with friends who suggested Legends. Love that it's BYOB. Two of us had the special mahi tuna, and shrimp with mushroom risotto. One person had penne pasta in a vodka sauce, and one person had another special with chicken, mushrooms, and fontina cheese. He said that the chicken dish was magic. The risotto was slightly undercooked, but still very good. We shared a couple of desserts which I'm not sure would do again. They were very pricey and their regular desserts were not available that evening so we each split the red velvet cake not exactly what we expected. Here are my reviews for my foods: Penne blackened shrimp ~ $21 - 4.5 stars - The penne pasta was cooked well, and it was topped with delicious shrimp, cherry tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, oil, and garlic. On the side were a small salad with my choice of balsamic dressing and an add-on of a few small slices of focaccia bread. Caesar salad ~ $18 - 3.5 stars - The mixed greens, olives, red peppers, and cheese were very fresh. I had not ordered chicken, but the restaurant included chicken. Caesar dressing was in separate containers. Meatball parm sandwich ~ $17 - 3 stars - My husband ordered this hoagie, and he ate only half of it. The hoagie roll was from Breadworks, and it contained large meatballs, cheese, and sauce. On the side was a small salad with mixed greens, carrots, onions, cucumbers, cheese, and my husband's choice of ranch dressing. Mozzarella ~ $10 - 3 stars - Large triangular chunks of mozzarella cheese were fried, and my husband ate most of them. On the side was marinara sauce. I also had ordered a 6.75-ounce bottle of Perrier for ~ $6, but I did not have a bottle opener to open it, so I saved it for later. read more

My friend and I had dinner at Legends on a Tuesday night before attending an event in the area. I've visited several times in the past with older family members, and the crowd during our visit this time around matched that same demographic. I ordered the penne vodka (with plenty to take home) that came with my choice of wedding soup. My friend ordered the mozzarella small plate as her meal. Legends probably doesn't need another glowing review, and maybe I just had a little more BYOB wine with my meal, but I feel the need to gush a bit. Since we discovered this place several years ago, it's been one of our go-to places on trips to Pittsburgh. Attentive servers, excellent ingredients, intriguing specials, and standard favorites make dining here a place where anyone can find the dinner of comfort and joy. Tonight we enjoyed the crispy polenta with roasted red peppers and sweet Italian sausage in a garlic aioli as a warm up. Those greens and beans are always perfect too and are standard fare on the menu. You may save room for house made desserts, though I wouldn't count on it, since you'll need a lot of spare space, as their portions are hefty. I have been wanting to try Legend's for a long time, several years now. And, I finally did it. I tried a pretty solid range of items: the penne vodka, apple pie, house made focaccia bread, and side salad. Let's start with the main course, the penne vodka. I've actually never had this dish before, but I thought it was very well made! The portion was definitely adequate, and it was clearly high quality. It's quite creamy, and doesn't taste like vodka at all. A tad bit of sweetness to it too. There's not much prosciutto, and it was all just kind of one clump in the bottom of the pasta, but it was still good. The side salad served complimentary with it was actually surprisingly good. Not just lettuce and cucumbers like in many other places. They had carrots, onions, spinach, blue cheese, and a very tasty ranch. The ranch, while very good, had a sort of grainy-ness to it, in texture. Other than that, fresh and very good! The little pieces of bread were also a lovely complimentary treat. I believe they are made in house, and I loved them. They'd be even better with a little oil (and I think they do have that option as an appetizer). Finally, the caramel apple pie. It was good, but a bit of a let down. The crust was kind of flavorless, and there wasn't really a strong caramel flavor to it. It was still good, and a great serving (although also pretty expensive), but not the best I've had. All in all, a very good, quantity, little Italian spot on the North side. Legends is inconspicuously located on the North Side, right near the hospital. Reservations are definitely recommended, as it's a pretty small spot with about 10 tables inside. Be sure to give yourself enough time to find parking, too, as you may need to drive around a few times to find street parking. The meal started out with the best bread and oil. Seriously, we ordered numerous baskets for the table because it was that good! The side salad was very fresh and loaded with veggies and cheese on top. Based on other Yelp reviews, I decided to go with the spinach ravioli, which was delicious. The portion size wasn't as large as some of the others at my table, but there was still enough for a few leftovers. We unexpectedly popped in and it was early so we were seated quickly. Didn't know anything about the restaurant and what a wonderful surprise. It was beautiful Italian restaurant with all the basics. The portions were enormous and the tiny tin of bread that they gave you was hot and delicious. We had muscles Virginia spots and a lemon white wine shrimp linguine followed with homemade warm cannolis with chocolate and butterscotch sauce and a beautiful pistachio sponge type of dessert all were outstanding. It's not a great atmosphere, but it really doesn't matter. You're gonna get good Italian food and a lot of it. Our server was just a doll. My recent experience at Legends was nothing short of disappointing due to the unwelcoming and discriminatory behavior of the staff. From the moment we arrived, we felt as if our presence was somehow a bother. Despite not having a reservation , we were told there were no available tables. We looked around and couldn't help but notice that more than eight tables were visibly empty. It was hard not to feel that our appearance and race influenced the treatment we received. Rather than a friendly greeting, we were met with cold stares, and when we inquired politely about the open tables, we were dismissed without an explanation. We were genuinely looking forward to dining at this establishment, but the cold and unfriendly reception made us feel incredibly unwelcome. Dining out should be about enjoying food and atmosphere--not facing subtle, yet unmistakable, discrimination. I hope this restaurant can reflect on its approach and work towards creating a truly inclusive and welcoming environment for all its patrons. PS. Stopped in for lunch on a weekday. I have been here several times for dinner but this was my first time for lunch. The service was good and food was out to us pretty fast. The chicken Caesar salad was my favorite (note it had olives). I assumed (my fault) that the sandwich would have been hot so I was a little disappointed when it was cold but again, I think that was my fault. It had been a long day. Cold and rainy, we had driven from Columbus, visited my friend, skipped lunch, and wrestled with a programmed door lock to our airbnb. I was hungry. It was Monday. I was getting grumpy. Everything was closed, BUT Legends was open. I had always wanted to try this place, but I have a long list of favorites in the Burgh. Hubby and I decided to take out and split an order of Chicken Scallopini, which came with soup, parmesan potatoes, strips of slightly cooked veggies, and focaccia. While waiting, one of the chefs was eating a concoction of leftovers. It looked wonderful. My mouth was watering, and the aromas were tantalizing. Our meal was ready. Packaged well, it was now pouring and freezing outside. Heavy winds nearly knocked me off my feet on the 2 block walk to the airbnb, and then there was the dreaded door lock at the airbnb. Let me tell you, every bite of this meal was delicious. I could have pigged out on the focaccia alone. Maybe if we had eaten in, they would have brought more. Hubby and I are fairly light eaters, so we had just the right amount for us. There is an Italian name for the Italian Bean Soup. The soup was tasty. The chicken scallopini smothered in mushrooms hit the spot. I wanted something different. Staff was welcoming, prices fair. And now I have yet another favorite spot in the Burgh. What a fun surprise! My Dad and I were walking around his old neighborhood and we were headed to another restaurant, but we saw the holiday lights at Legends and decided to stop in. It was about 4:45. We didn't have a reservation, which is recommended on weekends, but they were able to seat us as long as we finished before a 6pm reservation came in. My Dad got the chicken parm and enjoyed it. I decided to get the veal with peppers and it was better than expected; it had perfectly cooked veggies, solid portion, balanced Marsala sauce, yum. It's a tiny inside and we had no reservations but it got SO CROWDED (in a good way!) Love the inside it feels just like home. The food was so tasty and the people here work SOOOO hard. Legends has been on my list of places to visit for a few years now. We decided this would be the perfect restaurant to celebrate my mom's birthday dinner. I called a week ahead to see if they took reservations and were sent straight to voicemail. Someone quickly returned my call and accepted the reservation. He was very friendly on the phone. We had a group of 6 and found street parking right in front of the restaurant. There was one other table of 6, and then we were the only other customers. I did see them pack lots of takeout orders, but no other guests came in. I thought that was really odd since I heard how busy they always are. Our waitress Sara was amazing and will request her again next time! She explained the specials, and gave recommendations for appetizers. The restaurant is BYOB, so we took a bottle of Barbera. We went with Sara's recommendations to order their bruschetta (which is literally pizza). We ordered 1 with red peppers and artichokes, and 1 margherita. Both were really good. The dough was the best part. For my entree I ordered the mussels and shrimp over linguine. She informed me that the diablo sauce was extremely spicy. I asked if she could use their house marinara sauce since I really wanted to try that anyway. She was able to substitute the sauce, thank goodness! Each entree came with a salad (house or caesar for an upcharge). I ordered the house salad with balsamic. I liked it alot! The people at our table that got Caesar also loved it. On Tuesdays you can add a side of greens and beans for just 99 cents! I added them in addition to my seafood pasta. They may have been the best greens and beans I've ever had. Perfectly garlicky and almost creamy from the beans cooking for so long. I loved it and will order a full sized portion next time. The mussels and huge shrimp were both cooked perfectly. The linguine is homemade at Penn Mac. I loved that it was very al dente. The portion size was huge. I can't wait to get this dish again! Some other popular menu items at our table were chicken scallopini, penne with vodka sauce and a meatball, chicken parm, and a salmon dish that was the special of the day. Our waitress told us what types of desserts they had, so we didn't know the prices. Each dessert was equivalent to 2 normal serving sizes. We definitely could have shared them, but now we know for next time. I ordered the coconut cream pie, and it was about ¼ of a pie lol! I barely put a dent in it. Now I have pie for the week! Everyone also loved the caramel apple pie. They make their desserts in house, and they were about $10 each. Definitely don't skip the dessert. Came in early on a Friday and was still able to get a table for two without a reservation. Glad we got there kind of early as it got much busier as the night wore on. Because of our late lunches, we decided to share an appetizer and entree. The entree came with soup or salad and patrons also get complimentary bread and olive oil. All that to say, we still wound up with plenty of food. We ordered the bruschetta appetizer and chicken parmigiana with Italian wedding soup. Food was flavorful and fresh, portions were generous and the waitstaff were attentive and quick to refill glasses and provide recommendations.
