Especially like the alcove seating at the left rear. Much quieter and a bit less busy with restaurant traffic. It's so easy to get to the restaurant as well. This review would have been a 4/5 had I not had a bug in my drink. The drink was replaced with no offers to comp. The crusty bread had nice dipping mixture. The banana peppers were perfect for three people. Just enough zing to make interesting. Dinner consisted of bucatini, fusilli, and eggplant parm. Fresh pasta is a real treat. Large shareable portions. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Only one person didn't join the clean plate club. He has lunch for tomorrow. I went here for a work lunch. The service was friendly and fast. The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous! Parking was a pain but we all managed. The food was incredible! Several appetizers were ordered as well as share plates as we were a large party. I loved the bread, the burrata was cooked perfectly, the chicken parm was crisp and flavorful. I ordered a pomegranate margarita - strong with lots of fruity goodness! For my entree, I got the ravioli - butternut squash with a brown sugar sauce and hazelnuts. The menu lists foods such as eggs benedict, pancakes, salads, brussels sprouts, sandwiches, pastas, meatballs, mussels, tuna tartare, salmon, chicken, veal, steaks, tiramisu, etcetera. The bar offers many wines, cocktails, beers, non-alcoholic beverages, and more. My husband and I ate one dinner here. We arrived at 4:10 PM when the restaurant had very few other customers, but our wait times for our foods were long. We ended up leaving over 1.5 hours later. Our waiter did speak very nicely with us. Here are my ratings for what we ate: Complimentary bread - 4 stars - I liked the slices of bread, but sometimes they and their butter were too salty. Beet Salad - 4.5 stars - My appetizer was an arugula salad with roasted beets, ricotta salata, orange vinaigrette, and almonds. These ingredients were fresh and tasted very good. Forest Mushrooms - 4 stars - My husband ordered these mushrooms to eat with his steak, but they were brought out as an appetizer so got cold. The oyster, shiitake, and cremini mushrooms had a nice flavor of herbs. Tagliatelle - 4.5 stars - The tagliatelle noodles were cooked well and were mixed with large chunks of lobster, cream, spinach, sundried tomatoes, and focaccia bread crumbs. I really liked this entree. Steak Fiorentina - 4.5 stars - An 8-ounce filet mignon was cooked medium-rare as requested, and it tasted delicious. The side potatoes tasted alright. Olive-oil Cake - 4.5 stars - A large slice of olive-oil cake was topped with some marmellata fruit jam and mascarpone cheese. Strawberry-mint Margarita - 3 stars - My alcoholic beverage was a margarita that contained tequila, strawberry, mint, lime, etcetera. I did not taste much strawberry, so I drank only a little of this beverage. This meal cost $162 plus a tip. I am interested in returning and trying more foods. read more

Excellent pasta and service. I've been here more than once and the service has been consistently good. On one occasion our pasta was a bit too al dente. More like uncooked and I prefer my pasta al dente too. We just ate the pasta because the flavors were still good. We only commented on the pasta because our server asked. But the manager did comp our meal even if we did not ask for that to happen. I will continue to be a returning customer. The food is excellent and I believe the incident was a one time thing. Used to go here and enjoy their food and atmosphere. Sadly, place has gone downhill. Ordered Pasta Carbonara. Unbelievably salty. Could barely touch the night I was there and had taken home to see if I could remedy. Also order Brussel Sprouts. Delicious. Asked for left over to also go home. Nothing in box when I got home. Drinks were good as were appetizers, but main entree was inedible. While wait staff was nice, not once did they ask how I like meal. Maybe they knew the pasta carbonara was inedible. I've been going to Alta Via since it opened. It used to have a "wow" factor but it seems it has lost its luster over the years. I've had many dishes and specials over the years, usually opting for a little gem salad, fish, or pasta. Everything now is good but not great like it used to be. With pricing a lot higher than previously, I'm not sure I'll go back as often as I used to. The atmosphere and service is still excellent, however so I'm keeping my review at 4 stars. read more

Honestly not overly impressed. The atmosphere was nice, and the hostess was nice. The food and bar is VERY overpriced. Dinner for two with 2 drinks will be $100. Some honest feedback. The waitress doesn't need to tell me the kitchen prefers that we put the entire order in at the same time; meaning appetizers and dinner at the same time. Frankly for the amount I'm spending on pasta, I really don't give a crap what the kitchen would prefer. Secondly, every restaurant on earth that serves chicken parm serves it with pasta. How do you not serve pasta with chicken parm? How about instead of telling me how the kitchen would prefer me to order, tell me the chicken parm doesn't come with pasta, but we can add a side. We went for Valentine's day dinner and it was a lovely experience! The ambiance felt very homey and comfortable but also intimate and romantic, and the wait staff were very attentive and friendly. We felt well taken care of the whole night. I love ricotta on toast, so ofc we ordered the warm ricotta on toast dish. It was spectacular!! It was topped with arugula and fresh pear/apple and such an unexpected flavor profile. We also shared pasta and the Florentine Steak. Both were very yummy. All in all, a wonderful experience! I visited this weekend with a group of 8. While the food itself was decent, the service and atmosphere made for a frustrating evening. The friction started early. I had to call to secure a reservation and was told a credit card is required for parties over 6. That is fine, but it would be helpful if they posted that policy online to save everyone time. During that call, I specifically asked if we could arrive early for drinks at the bar and was invited to do so. When my wife and I arrived, our friends were already there. Since there were no seats next to them, we stood behind their chairs to chat. We were immediately told this is a "non-standing bar" and were forced to find seats elsewhere. Essentially, they wanted us to sit separately from our group and wave at them across the room. If I had known about this rigid policy, I never would have arrived early. The Service The service was cold. We never learned our server's name (Gary) until the bill arrived. He acted as if simple requests, like ordering another glass of wine, were a massive burden. The food was the biggest letdown regarding value. The meatballs were fantastic, but the guidance I received on the main course was terrible. I asked about the size of the Seafood Arrabbiata and was told it was "huge"--enough for two people. Based on that, I skipped other courses. When it arrived, it was a small portion with no pasta (which I assumed it came with, but that's on me). Because I relied on the server's advice, I ended up leaving an Italian restaurant hungry--a first for me. To top it off, half the dessert menu is gelato, and they were completely out of it. When we finished, the staff aggressively cleared the table--even taking our water carafes--while we finished our drinks. We wanted another round, but the server disappeared. Given the "unwelcome" vibe at the bar, we decided to leave and went to a Mexican restaurant around the corner, where they were happy to serve us. Verdict The atmosphere is best described as snooty and the prices are too high for the experience provided. There are too many great options in the area to deal with this. We stopped in at Alta Via for a bite on a road trip and all I can say is wow, what a treat! We started out with the burrata appetizer and split a beet salad. Burrata app: cheese tasted super fresh, arugula salad on the side was a nice touch. The prosciutto was sliced rather thickly for my taste but it didnt bother me too much. Beet salad: Orange vinaigrette was very tasty with the beets and the chopped toasted almonds gave the salad some nice texture. **Bonus points for the free focaccia bread!! Lots of places charge you for bread now so that was a solid plus.** For our entrees we got the Lumache and Fusilli. Let me say the fusilli was out of sight!! Super creamy and velvety smooth sauce with al dente pasta. 10/10. Bf got the lumache which he said was tasty. We skipped dessert and drinks this time around. All in all a great experience but a couple notes about service: our waiter was very nice but we felt like service was a little slow. The meal took kind of a while to come out and while we werent in a rush, we didn't expect to be here for an hour and a half. I didnt dock a star because the food was good enough that I didnt really care but maybe don't come here if you're in a super big hurry. read more

Stopped here for belated birthday lunch. Has a beautiful upscale look to the place. Had lunch reservations and our waiter saw to it all our needs were met. Daughter had burger and fries which she was thoroughly delighted with. Son had vegan bolanaise pasta. He let me sample it. It's good but it did have a bit of a kick to it. This our 3rd time at Alta Via and this visit was the only time we had any issues. First let me say that our server Matt was wonderful throughout the meal. Very attentive. We called about 1.5 hrs before our reservation to specifically tell them we were celebrating our son's birthday (23). Our apps of the meatballs and Brussel sprouts were absolutely delicious. The salmon and pasta sides were wonderful. The problem came with the chicken parm that my husband and son ordered. My husband had had the chicken parm a year ago and it was delicious. Both of the chicken cutlets were undercooked and pink at the thickest part. The table next to us complained of the exact same thing with their chicken parm. The manager came over and told us that it had to do with the way it is prepared via a brine. Regardless, seeing pink in chicken is never good-very off putting. They did take the chic parm off the bill which we expected. The other thing that was disappointing is no recognition of our son's birthday. I say this because a year earlier we went for our anniversary and they brought us a large tiramisu with a candle so I thought for a birthday they would have done something similar. There was no mention at all of the birthday. Unfortunately we will think twice before coming back with so many other great eating options in the city. read more

Waited a very long time for the 4 of us to get main entrees. 3 of the 4 pastas were cold and had to send back and another long wait. Food was good though but mine just came back just barely warm and not hot food. The restaurant is pretty and has a medium loud atmosphere but the music they play is very loud and very annoying. Took my family here for a birthday dinner on 6/13. My wife and I have gone here on special occasions and have nothing but great service and food. This was a different experience than the others. Our Server Gregg was horrible and inattentive. He didn't even know what VEGAN was which was disappointing based on previous great Vegan dishes there. But was really the kicker was to watch family after family come in after us and leave way before we even got our dinner to our table. It was a disappointing visit compared to the previous. My wife's vegan meal was not very good. The rest of the party's food was delicious. We will go back as a couple and ask not to have Gregg since he did not add anything positive to the dining experience. read more

Honestly confused as to why I haven't been here sooner. I've always heard great things about Alta Via from coworkers who live in Fox Chapel and they were all correct. Inside is stunning and small enough to feel low key. The food and service was fantastic. Bread service (I think focaccia?) was spot on. The long island duck was juicy and tender. It was marinated with a delicious fig thyme sauce - so unique! The papardelle pasta was very good as well. The braised beef was tender and the noodles were super long. I would 100% recommend trying the desserts. My favorite was the chocolate torte and the tiramisu was definitely a runner up. Overall, it was a great meal all around.
