Tom is an honest, reliable, and trustworthy mechanic. I was ill and miscounted money, I ended up giving him $100 more (services are cheaper if you pay cash). Tom called me and let me know. I went to pick up my money the next day. Another time I thought I had an oil leakage in the summer. He educated me and told me it wasn't oil, but water from ac usage. Another time the oil sign on my car was flashing red. I thought I needed an oil change, but I just needed this liquid (my car utilized three bottles- I paid $15). Naturally, I waited until the last possible minute to renew my registration for my car. New Years Eve. The next day they'd be open would be one day past the due date, which means an extra $50!!! Imagine my surprise and slight panic when they told me I needed a smog test. I was under the impression that they were good for two years, but not the case. Google Maps put Altadena Smog Test as my closest smog check location, a mile from the DMV. I hopped in my car, pulled into the lot, and was greeted by a nice man named Tom (the manager) who was changing someone's tire. He asked, "Smog Test?" I said YES! I was in and out in 15 minutes and had time to run over to AAA to get my registration taken care of. It's been a while since I had a smog test--my Honda didn't need one for 5 years--so I don't know if this has become the norm, but this small shop had a comfy waiting area inside. Not as nice as, say, a Jiffy Lube, but still, it beat milling around outside like I had always had to do in the past. Tom, the manager, is friendly, fast and efficient. NO FREE RETEST - I and my family have taken our cars here since early 2000's. Today after he got in the car to check the milage and status and then opened the hood, He asked me to pay in advance, something he'd never asked me before. After I paid, less than a few seconds passed between taking my money and walking to the car, looked inside and proclaimed "Car will Fail".I asked him why and he said "I didn't see the engine light" "We no longer give free re-tests" I was suprised by this also, I had come to him, because his shop's policy has always been "Free re-test if the car fails" so I asked him, "What do you mean you no longer give free-retest? He replied, "No one in the area gives free re-tests anymore" "I can only give you a 50% discount to re-test it". He then plugged in a portable sensor checker and said it has a bad sensor, came back to the computer and plugged it in and printed out the fail paper I left and went to Honda to have the repair made, even the Honda Service Person was surprised when I told him what happened, and about the statement that "no other shops in Pasadena are giving free re-tests". When I got home, I looked at his paper work and the business card he attached to the registration, says "Free Retest" He told me he could only give me a 50% discount on the retest. The nice guys at the British imports car shop next door asked if I was there for a smog and when I explained that the man I spoke to earlier said he'd be there until 5:30 or 6:00, they just shook their heads and said, "Eh, that's Tom..."
