I was there Saturday during lunch to make an exchange. I had to circle the extremely packed and tight store 3 times before I found someone to help me. The employee couldn't even locate the product, I ended up finding it myself. Then I got in line for the return. There are 2 registers. The manager who tried to help me was up front hanging things and told me the girl at the register would be right with me. That girl was working on a return with a guy who's girl was in the dressing room. They were waiting on her to come out to do something. All the while I had to stand and wait. I was disappointed the manager didn't offer to help with my return versus making me wait the nearly 10 min it took for them to finalize the other return. I like the jacket I bought, but will likely never shop Altar'd State again to avoid having to go in person to either shop or do an online return. read more

I Altar'd my opinion of this place, and of the State of Texas, recently. But for Christian clothing, this is one of your primary options, you religious person you. It's funny that people don't realize this is a Christian store because I got that vibe straight away, and you can tell by a lot of the clothing in here. More conservative than most places, and plenty of imagery on various products. It would be hard to miss. So it's a specialty shop then, and it's not for everyone. It's expensive stuff, but at least some of it is cute and at least some of it is not too overtly religious so it's not bad. read more

This is my new favorite store. I am so happy I discovered it! Clothes here are super cute. Customer service here is amazing. They are so willing to help right away. But want to give you your space. I love that it's a Christian store. Makes us feel more comfortable and at home when we go. My only dislike is it's not as conservative as I thought it would be? I'm not saying it should be super conservative. But I've come across dresses I really love and would wear either to church or work and my chest is out. I'm not sure it's because of my body type that makes it more revealing or it's supposed to be that revealing. I still love the clothes a lot. Just wish I could buy certain outfits. We had a great conversation with our cashier. She was super sweet and helped us a lot. Definitely going to come here more I'm absolutely in love with this. What do Jesus, Toms shoes, Haitian orphans, and cowboy boots have in common? Nothing, really, except maybe the start of a really inappropriate joke that'll send you straight to Hell. In reality, though, they're all involved in a new Domain boutique called "Altar'd State". It was over a post-work Friday debriefing at Cru that my friend Shiloh mentioned that she and her coworkers had stopped into a new little boutique earlier that day called "Altar'd State". I inquired as to why she--a hard-working, productive citizen--would be visiting a head shop during business hours. She explained to me that it was NOT a head shop, but a clothing/accessories boutique with a Christian bent. Fine. I rephrased and asked why--as a hard-working, productive citizen--she would be at a clothing/accessories boutique with a Christian bent during business hours. Whatever. I was only kidding. Based out of Knoxville, TN (Before this review I believed the only things that came out of Tennessee were Jack Daniel's and Miley Cyrus), Altar'd State offers mid-priced merchandise for ladies that ranges from sun dresses to handbags, from household items to cowboy boots. And that sort of cute/sort of creepy stuffed dog named Boo (seriously, he's everywhere, staring at you in all parts of the store). Interspersed among the displays are various plaques and wall decor extolling the virtues of God and Jesus. I even wondered aloud where the "Jesus loves me, this I know" plaque was...right before I found it...right behind some Christian coffee mugs. Aha. So this is how it was going to be. Shiloh had purchased a wristlet and a necklace--all at incredibly affordable prices. If it is "Altar'd State" branded, apparently a portion of the proceeds goes to benefiting Haitian orphans. Naturally, it seems to flow that they stock a wide array of Toms shoes and sunglasses, helping the brand's "one-for-one" pair of shoes and/or corrective eye surgeries for those in the Third World. As their website explains: "Altar'd State customers can enjoy supporting an organization that promotes confidence, civic involvement and positivity through its merchandise and involvement. Altar'd State more than a store, it's a movement." Basically, it's the kind of consumerism that you can feel all warm and fuzzy about. As we were perusing the racks of clothes, one of the women behind the counter came over and asked me if I remembered her from Saks. I did, although she was in the ladies contemporary department that I rarely set foot in since I was spending most of my time kicking ass behind the fragrance counter. I asked her more about the shop since I wasn't familiar, and that's pretty much where I filled in all the gaps about the theme of the place that Shiloh had touched on earlier. She seemed really happy to be there, and happy sales associates usually reflect a happy work environment. Which makes sense, because I would sincerely hope a place that's throwing Bible quotes around wouldn't also somehow be a hellish gulag as a place of employment. There is absolutely nothing in here for me...but there may be a demographic out there in Austin this would appeal to. I'm not entirely sure what kind of denomination of Christianity this place is anchored by (As in, I appreciate their causes for the globally underprivileged, but...what are their domestic social stances? And by domestic social stances, I mean, would the owners freak out if I started singing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"? if I felt like it.) Part of me is curious, and part of me just doesn't really want to know. Anywhoo. If you're looking for on-trend fashion with a purported desire to change the world, Altar'd State may be worth checking out. But if you're anything like me, I think the only altered state I'm interested in at the Domain requires a Happy Hour menu, and a fully-stocked bar. For what it's worth, 3 Stars. TRASH COMPANY DO NOT BUY HERE. I have contacted customer service so many times about a pair of 60$ wedges I returned through the mail that they claim they never received which is BS! It was delivered and I had the receipt to show it but I never got my shoes sent back in the correct size. I returned because they were wrong size and had a huge stain on them like they were worn which is disgusting for the price. I went in to shop yesterday, and I felt very racially discriminated against. As soon as I walked into the store I made eye contact with one of the employees & instead of her greeting me like she did to every other girl that girl that walked in, she turned her back on me & just walked away. Whenever I would ask for an item and if they had my size they would just tell me no & at one point one of the girls said she went to the back to check for a piece of clothing for me, but she did not I literally just saw her walk around the store & come back & tell me there wasn't anymore. Afterwards I saw her go to the back and get the same piece of clothing I was asking for & gave it to another customer. Other employees or customers did not even want to walk next to me or be near me. Love this store, not sure why so many comments basing them negative off their Christian backgrounds. There are plenty of companies with the same background. To judge a company based off of it is a little weird but anyways... I always find such great clothing here, sure some of the prices may be a bit higher than I would like for an average person but I will say I have always been lucky in their amazing sale section, and they usually offer some sort of great deal like their current BOGO 50% dresses and rompers. Perfect for some nice quality spring dresses. I love that they also honor military discount! I've always been treated so great at this location, the staff is friendly and I'm always greeted anytime I've gone in. There are super helpful without being smothering. Also for a store located in the domain it's well kept, clean, organized, and really not nearly as expensive as the other stores located there. read more

Wow this place is like the cheaper version of Anthropologie haven. I did not realize it was a Christian based stored until my friend pointed it out later. The dresses here were insanely cute and there was SO many to choose from. The SAs that work here also helped me pair and style the dresses I wanted to try on as I was shopping. When I went into the dressing room, I was super surprised to see everything coordinated. I appreciated the effort. I ended up getting two dresses on their buy one get one half off deals. Super worth it - when I'm back to Austin I'll be stopping by this store again. read more

Walked into the store thinking it had good clothes and decent prices. Found something, but when it came time to checkout they had only one cash register open, which is fine if you don't have too many customers. However there were 4 people in line behind who was being checked out and had a lot of things. The sales associate behind the cash register was walking around the store for the customer because they weren't even done shopping. When I asked for another cash register to be opened, they helped the person infront of me, but when it came my turn, the Store Manager came in and told me I had to wait. I received a magnetic watch for Christmas, and it never worked right! The time was off everyday, and I had to reset it again and again everyday. I've only had the watch for a month, and I decided maybe I'd take it to the store and see if I can exchange for one that works right. The sales associate said she could not give me an exchange because I didn't have a receipt, even if the item was bad. I thought that was horrible customer service! A week later, it was my birthday and I received a sweater from the store that my friend bought for me. I wore it one day and the thread starting becoming undone from several spots on the tail of the sweater where I sat on. I cannot wear it again because it looks bad and it's hard to conceal. I went on the website to chat with a customer service, and received no response after the initial "How can I help you?" I will most likely not shop here anymore or tell my friends to buy things from this store because of my horrible experience with bad products and bad customer service. read more

Well its really too bad this company has to lie about what they truly stand for!!! I worked at the Wilmington nc store for 1 week I was fired , and I was bullied by a manager by the name of Natalie. you can't miss her she has blonde hair and tons of tattoos not exactly a christian either. All I can say is I'm blown away at how poorly I was treated as an employee. plus to be very honest I have a learning disability. I was trying very hard and because I didn't have closing procedures perfect in 3 days I was fired. hate to tell you altar'd state I shouldve been offered accomidations that is the law. unless you aren't familiar with the disability act of 1984 which believe it or not still protects those with disabilities looks like we will be in a lawsuit!!! read more

Spending some time in here gift shopping, I really appreciate the kind professionalism of the clerks. They were constantly helping customers gather clothes, get fitting rooms, direct their wants and needs, and all the while maintaining a clean and organized store. At no one time did I see any clerk just stop and be lazy. They were always helpful and filled with cheery conversation. I also appreciate the concept of the business where you can buy uniquely crafted items and great apparel while helping those in need. Oh altar'd state. How high hopes I had for you since your opening. Although your atmospherics are on point from everything to your visual merchandising to your intoxicating scents, that's not enough for a customer to feel completely satisfied. I admired their Christian motivation and giving back to community but their merchandise is just so, so unreasonably marked up. They also closed on Sundays for a day of rest but that didn't last too long... Another upsetting fact... More than a couple of the exact same dresses I found at forever 21 for $24, was $45 LESS than if you bought it here. Customers: if you want to give back to the community, buy the things that actually gives all the profit to the organization like FAshionable scarves, 31 bits, sseko sandals and TOMS. Their actual merchandise is extremely poor quality for the expensive price. I have several shirts that have holes all around the seams just after two washes! This is the most greedy company I've ever purchased from. I bought a dress that was about $90, and ended up being wrong for the occasion. went back and purchased a second dress from the store for the same occasion, last minute, so I did so without returning the first dress. Unfortunately, when I was able to make the trip back to return the first dress, it was the 33rd day from the purchase, so I could only have store credit. I feel this is incredibly greedy because the dress was still stocked in the store at full price. That will be my last purchase from this "Christian" company. read more

I'd never heard of this store before I passed it on my way to return a coffee machine. I saw one of the dresses in the window and turned to check it out. I had a date that Sunday and thought "huh, might as well". Normally, I do not go shopping unless dragged by a friend or a sister, and find the whole process exhausting, a waste of time, and pointless if i walk away empty handed. However; I ended up picking out 7 dresses from just one section of the store, with the help of a friendly consultant. I've been shopping at malls, individual boutiques, large chain stores, and have NEVER had a shopping experience where EVERY article I picked out fit. Now, I am not a model, not the shape of a mannequin, and normally have trouble finding flattering clothes that are made well and fit nicely. Every piece I'd picked out fit wonderfully, was around the same price, and were all well made. Feeling cheerful, as I left the dressing room I noticed a book of prayers resting by the mirror, and wrote down my wish for an improvement in my boyfriend's health. When I asked the same consultant who had been helping me why this was there, she said that sometimes before the store opened when it was quiet she would go through and pray for people's wishes. She also helped me pick out accessories for the dress I was buying, and didn't do any of this in a pressuring way. In the end, I left Altar'd State with a smile, something I'd never obtained from a clothing store before. I've never written a review on yelp before, but my unique and completely different experience at Altar'd State compelled me to. I hope y'all enjoy it too. read more

Worst Customer Service Ever! Shopping on Sunday, crowded store, glob of people around the 2 cashiers at checkout. Looked like two lines, no signs indicating line purpose. Stood waiting for ~20 minutes, got to front of line as person in front of me finished. Cashier thanked that person, and promptly moved to the table to the left, cleared off some stuff and announced anyone with exchanges could come up. Simultaneously, the other cashier asked for the next person in line, looking at the person directly behind me, who walked up and started her transaction. Not a glance at me from either one. I said, REALLY! I've been waiting in line for a long time. The cashier to the left said, sorry, I can't help you, I'm only doing returns. The other cashier - nothing! S E R I O U S L Y!!! I left my purchase on the counter. This used to be my favorite store to shop in the Domain. No longer, NEVER coming back. This is basic customer service 101 failure. read more

Visited this store with my daughter, who was doing all the shopping, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. I wish I had got the name of the young girl who greeted us when we entered. She bent over backwards to help her out. All the others were friendly and assisted, but this one in particular really impressed me. She even called my daughter by her name when leaving the store, thanking her for coming in. I had never heard of this store until it showed up at the domain, but now I can't imagine not shopping there! The clothes are always super cute, and there's almost always some type of sale going on. The people who work here are awesome!! They are always super helpful (without being over attentive) and willing to help you until you're completely happy. Every time I shop here I wonder why I don't frequent the store more often. The clothing selection is large and affordable. Most of my shopping trips here have been when they were having some sort of sale. I also love how large of a selection they have in the clearance department! Color coordinating the store and grouping styles together makes it a breeze to find what you're looking for. I like the large amount of open space in the store, so when the store is busy you don't feel packed in like sardines. The employees have always been helpful and polite. Plus it feels like they are always appropriately staffed with plenty of people to help you. I like that they start a dressing room for you, so you don't have to carry a bunch of stuff around while you're shopping. I think it's great they don't limit the number of merchandise items you can take in to the dressing room. It makes it much easier and stress free to try clothes on. I love the special touch of adding accessories to the dressing room with outfits you have picked out. Even if you don't want the items I think it's a nice touch and when stores personalize your shopping experience you always want to buy more. At least I do! The girls that work in the fitting room were super nice. They offer to take the stuff you don't want and to get you a different size if needed. The checkout line is usually long and slow, but I don't mind. They place cute accessories by the checkout to keep you occupied... the bags they give you when you checkout are super cute as well. Whoever thought to design the store this way and have such helpful and gracious employees deserves an A+! I always leave here spending tons of money, but how could you not when the selection is incredible and you're surrounded by helpful employees everywhere. read more

The BEST customer service I have ever experienced. My sister wanted a shirt for Christmas and I took my time getting to the mall to buy it. The store in my city was completely sold out, and so was the online shop. I called the Altar'd State headquarters in Tennessee just to see if they had any ideas for me. The woman I spoke with at Altar'd State told me she found a location in Tennessee that had 1 of these shirts left. She called the store, put the shirt on hold, left work to purchase the shirt for me, and then priority shipped it to me free of charge. She went above and beyond and I am so grateful so people like this in the world. read more
