Yum! Went here on a double date after an event today in serious need of a good meal. I had bookmarked that is place but totally forgot about it! The bahn mi bowl looked absolutely delicious so I went for that! It had tofu, quinoa, arugula, avocado, and jalepenos. All things that I LOVE! It was amazing. We also got pretzel bites to share. My husband dunked one in the mustard thinking it was cheese haha, but that's on him for not reading the menu. He got a burger and fries and enjoyed it, I also had a few fries. We were thrilled when we snagged a spot at the May the fourth be with you Star Wars event! It was a planned 6-course with drinks menu and was a blast! Perfect surprise date night for my husband and I. They had Star Wars playing on a projector, Star Wars photo back drop, lightsabers on the table and so much more. The chef came out and explained each meal and drink with a fun story that really put you into the Star Wars realm. All the food and drinks were so unique and phenomenal! I felt like my taste buds discovered a whole new pallet on this night. Things I never even had before so it was such an incredible experience to try new things like quail's egg, kale, beetroot hummus, monk fish, short rib, blue noodles, pop rock sorbet, and so much more. But I decided to come in Monday and one of the male server's didn't want to take my order and insisted that I had to go upstairs to place my order with Alibi . So I went to the roof top to find out I could've just stayed down stairs to dine and the Alibi kitchen wasn't open . I felt like I was discriminated by that server due to the fact I wasn't fully presentable and ..... I continued and did my homework and waited for my food on the rooftop . Once the nice bartender brought my order , she never returned my change . Unfortunately found hair in meal. Cool, stylish little place to go for dinner if you're around ASU. I wouldn't go out of my way, though. It's nothing quite special or memorable. I will say that the service from Brian was great, and the singer playing on his guitar up front was wonderful. For appetizers, we got a side of fried tofu and a pear salad. I liked both, especially the tofu. For entrees, my husband got the burger and I got the steak salad. Both were good, but nothing amazing. In the last few months it's been nice to see traffic pick up. The menu hasn't changed much since it opened. Cocktail menu is wonderful! Best thing on the food menu are the chicken sandwich and fries (get the fries as a side by themselves/an appetizer) and the pear salad. The sandwich packs the perfect amount of sweet heat for someone like myself who doesn't do a lot of spice. I'd be weary though to order it very late/near close-- did so once and the chicken was rubbery/hard to cut. Super disappointed with this place. My friend wanted to come here for cinco de Mayo since they were promoting a special for margaritas and tacos. We never received service. Nobody came to our table even though we were told to sit anywhere. We walked up to the bar after a while of waiting and the bartenders just ignored us. Here are a few reasons this spot is getting a 1 star. 1) the octopus was 16 dollars for the smallest tentacle, been to higher scale spots that give more for less than that. 2) the Flat bread was undercooked, loaded with excessive cheese, missing other ingredients that was listed on the menu, and covered in black pepper on 1 side but not the other? (See pic) 3) the server checked on us 1 time while we were waiting quite a while for the food and only refilled waters 1x, to be fair I am here for a race and need to hydrate so maybe I was hyper focused on that, but still not ok. 4) my fiancé ordered a cocktail, and was given something that didn't taste right at all, and she sent it back, and she has never done that before. 5) I ordered the sticky rice, and they sent the fried rice that was over seasoned, I just ate it bc I was hungry but it was not enjoyable. 6) some of these mistakes may not be typical for them, but at one point the host was in the kitchen making pizzas for the chef, it's an open kitchen concept. Very nice and cozy spot inside the Canopy Hotel in downtown Tempe. We sat outside and the weather was beautiful. Our server, Javier, was very attentive and provided excellent service. We ordered pretzel bites, "naked" chicken wings, three cheese and pepperoni flatbread and the salmon entree. The wings were so yummy. They were fried very hard. I am not sure if that was on purpose but that is exactly how I like my wings. They literally come naked and you dip in one of two sauces. I don't know the name but both were delicious. The flatbread was just so so. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great either. The salmon and the pretzel bites were yummy as well. The presentation of the salmon was beautiful. We popped in for breakfast on a Sunday. When I saw the place was empty and had numerous servers, I thought that boded well. However, we were there 30 minutes. My husband got a coffee quickly but was never asked about a refill. My water was empty after we were there 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the staff chatted together at the bar. We ordered one jumbo cinnamon roll that took 15 minutes to come out. It was okay, the outside a touch tough and the heating inconsistent, though the fresh cream cheese was nice. We waited yet again for someone to notice we were done and we finally gave up and approached them at the bar to settle the bill. They were nice enough folks, but not observant at all. Heads up - were strictly speaking brunch here! TL; DR: I've eaten in my fair share of hotel lobby restaurants, and this one is my favorite spot for brunch hands down. You can find Alter Ego in the lobby of Tempe's Canopy by Hilton, in the heart of the Shady Park "district" on University. It's south wall is nearly all garage door style sliding glass, which makes for great people watching, especially considering how close it is to ASU's main campus. This feature also brings me to the *only* negative part of my review: the roaring engines of college bros speeding down University is frequent and jarring. Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy, but I don't really want a side of 2 Fast 2 Furious with my breakfast. The good stuff: Aside from the noise from the street, the atmosphere is perfect! The decor in the lobby and restaurant is a beautiful clash of retro chic and stark modern concrete architecture. There's even a faux "canopy" of greenery that creeps down between the wooden slats that bisect the ceiling in a jagged line from the lobby to the rear of the restaurant. The music is kept at a volume that isn't too intrusive, even on the weekends when they host live acoustic artists. The restaurant and bar have always been adequately staffed in my experience, and I've never had to wait to be greeted, sat, or served. There is also an open kitchen towards the rear of the dining room, which is always pristinely kept and fun to watch. There is a full bar, complete with specialty cocktails, a modest wine selection, plenty of top shelf liquor, and an espresso machine. My fave - THE FOOD. Wow. I've had a broad sampling of the menu over the last year or so, and everything I've had has been incredibly well-composed. You can tell there has been careful attention paid to flavor profiles, textural composition, and variety. A must-try here: "The F.R.O." It's a fried rice filled teppanyaki-style omelet and it's effing incredible. The Smoked Salmon Board (pictured) is not only full of incredible flavors, but it's also an almost ridiculous value. The portion size is wild considering the price point. Places like Postino would charge the same for bruschetta made with the same ingredients but a quarter of the portion size. If you like smoked salmon and all the traditional pairings, this is a win + a fresh twist. The Varsity breakfast is a great option if you're looking for standard breakfast fare. It is also well executed, despite its simple composition. Locally-sourced smoked meats are the star in this one. I'm seldom inspired to Yelp about places - but I couldn't help myself here. This spot is definitely worth a stop if you're in the hood around brunch time! read more

We were in town for Spring Baseball and prior to our visit I looked for some breakfast spots to try. We had breakfast/brunch here twice, that's how good it is. Over the 2 days we ordered the Egg Sando (delicious, egg cooked perfectly) and hashbrowns crispy. Mimosas were really good, the fresh fruit was plentiful and good quality, get the jumbo cinnamon roll (definitely big enough to share, or not), ordered the Continental breakfast and 2 eggs scrambled. All of it was flavorful and served hot/cold respectively. The coffee was good and they offered coffee to go. The service was slow but very friendly. We weren't in a hurry but refills were slow and food service was slow. When we visit AZ again, we will be back, they suggested we visit the roof top restaurant but we never made it. We came to Alter Ego for my sister's 40th bday and the two servers were absolutely wonderful and accommodating. I'm sorry I was a little late so I didn't catch their names. Coming from working in the industry in the past and knowing how big of a party we had, it was a lot! However, they handled us so well. (Thank you to another server, who cleaned off the kiddos table). Waters were always filled, the kids got their food first, appetizer plates were cleared, made sure we all had drinks. We got a couple of flatbreads for an appetizer, which were delicious. So bummed by this spot! I've followed on IG and am patiently waiting for a 5-course meal from Alter Ego that I want to pop into one day. I tried to take my mom here this morning for an early Mother's Day brunch, but had great difficulty find a host(ess). When we did speak to staff, they indicated a 1-hour wait. When asked why, the staff member went on to point to every patron in the restaurant stating why each of the tables came before us. Perhaps it was the live music that kept the staff member's voice so loud when speaking with us? Unfortunately we had to leave, which is what was suggested by the staff member whenever we tried to put our names in or learn more about the wait. It's prepped well with nice details like the cinnamon whip on the french toast. Portions are huge. I ordered hot cakes with chicken sausage and it was about $16 but could have been 2 or 3 meals. The reason this place gets three stars is that I wasn't all that impressed with the food. I saw them make a katsu chicken burger for someone and when I requested the same they said they could not do it and that I was mistaken. So they said I could order katsu chicken and waffle. This was basically a small piece of chicken on a waffle that wasn't all that great, and for $20. Really not impressed. My friend who ordered the varsity breakfast said the chicken sausage tasted odd. Came for a Star Wars "special event". Here's how it was decorated: one cardboard cutout and a really really sad balloon arch with half the balloons half inflated. The food was terrible! It was a five course tasting and not a single course was good. A taco with pork and sliced sausage and so much horseradish that's all you tasted. Then bland noodles. Then a dry turkey meatball. Then the most disgusting stew I've ever tasted. Dessert was a Moon pie with the driest cookie I've ever had the misfortune to put in my mouth. I have been driving past and meaning to stop at this place forever. The hotel and entire environment is just gorgeous, very elegant. I enjoyed how breakfast had a very open air feel with the large doors making the space flow seamlessly from the inside bar to the outside patio area.
