I'm an Arizona native, and a self proclaimed Mexican Food snob. Añayas is in a strip mall behind a Circle K, so it's easy to overlook, but it's a true gem of the neighborhood! It's quaint, never a wait, and it has become our family go-to. We always have wonderful service and great meals with freshly prepared ingredients. The shrimp dishes are incredible, remnant of Puerto Peñasco with shrimp that "pops" (if you know good shrimp, you know what I mean!) They have Negra Modelo on draught (hard to find that!), and their margaritas are delish. You can't go wrong with chimichangas or combo platters! Hubby & I had dinner here last Friday night. It t a minute to be greeted & seated, but not bad. Hubby ordered his favorite beer & I ordered sangria. Hubby's beer was good. My sangria was good as well. However, the amount you get for around $8.50 is a joke. Its a small glass with just a little bit in the glass. The chips & salsa were good. The spicy salsa is the opposite of the one you would think is spicy out of the two, so pay attention. Hubby got a combo with a tamale & ground beef burrito with rice & beans. He said everything was good. He also ordered a side of guacamole. I thought I got a picture of the guacamole & sour cream. It's crazy how much they charged for them. They were the small plast condiments containers, but they charged almost $5 for the guacamole. I don't remember the extra cost for the sour cream, but it too was way too high for the tiny size. I got a chicken chimichanga with grilled chicken instead of the shredded chicken which came with rice & beans. It was all good. Our server was friendly & did a good job. We loved the decor. It reminded us of being in Mexico. The table & chairs are really cool too. I wanted to love this place, but the cost of the sangria, sour cream & guacamole are just too high for me to justify coming back. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it was a total flop. We ordered a kids burrito, ceviche and another burrito. Their ceviche was good but I don't recommend eating it with the tostadas they serve it with. It was better with their table chips. The price doesn't justify the portion of it. The serving was very small and you should honestly be getting more than that. The burritos were sadly not memorable. How can you mess up a burrito?! It wasn't very busy either to have an inattentive waiter either. I don't know if it was maybe an off day to come in? But I won't be returning. read more

UPDATE: what an improvement over the last review! "Ordinary" has exploded into "great!" We've returned to Anayas, searching for our go-to Mexican food. Not only have the taste and quality of food improved, the presentations of the main dishes were awesome - plus, the chicken enchiladas mole was the best mole I've tasted! The burro was served on a large black plate and the colors, red, green and white just popped. We found our go-to Mexican restaurant! (But we're not alone. By 8:00 pm the restaurant and the bar were full!) Try it...or try it again. PRO TIP- order chicken enchiladas mole; eat one, take the other home; next morning, reheat it and add an over-easy egg on top. What a breakfast treat! read more

Great first visit to Anaya's! We've driven by this restaurant many times, and tonight we decided to stop in for dinner. We were greeted by a friendly man and seated promptly. Within a minute of sitting down, another employee brought us fresh chips and salsa. We took a few minutes to look over the menu and we ordered chicken enchiladas suizas and chicken mole enchiladas. Our food came out hot and fresh from the kitchen. The shredded chicken in my enchiladas was incredibly juicy and flavorful. My husband enjoyed his mole enchiladas as well. Our entrees came with fluffy Mexican rice and delicious refried beans topped with melted cheese. We were so full we didn't try any dessert this time. Our server came by a few times throughout the meal to refill drinks and make sure we were enjoying everything. Their breakfast menu looks great, so we'll be sure to stop by soon to try that. read more

Third visit. This time we dined with friends. First two visits were great. This one? So-so. First, our skinny margaritas arrived with doll-sized champagne glasses. NO! Please give me a cocktail tumbler with ice. Two of us ordered the delicious chicken mole enchiladas ... and were brought chicken mole entrees. Try again, please. One diner was still hungry and asked for an order of the chicken mole enchiladas. And was brought the chicken mole entree. Yikes. The desserts were not so great - with the exception of the fried ice cream. The apple chimi with chocolate (whaaat?) sauce and the greasy, floppy sopapillos were memorable for all the wrong reasons. Tried Anayas today for the first time! Service was great considering there was only one waitress working (at lunch time). Waitress was friendly! I had a cheese enchilada and didn't really care for the sauce. However, the rice and beans were delicious! My boyfriend had the two taco (shredded beef) with rice and beans plate. Anaya's Mexican is the real deal. I had the chicken mole and it was incredible ,rich, flavorful, and easily one of my favorite dishes. I loved it so much I finished the whole plate. The margaritas are a must too. They come out big and full of flavor, the perfect pairing with the meal. I also had the pleasure of meeting the manager, Mario. How this place doesn't have 5 stars is beyond me. Between the service and the food, I don't know which is better. We sat at the bar and the gentleman who served us, Mario, was attentive and very kind. The drinks were great (strawberry mango marg). The chips and salsa were really good. So we have been coming to Anaya's for several years now. The Anaya's family is absolutely wonderful! Joey has been a staple as well as the rest of his family in making everyone feel welcome and part of the family when they come into the restaurant. A few weeks ago, Anaya's changed management and we noticed an immediate change in the service, food, and the ambience. And not for the better. It started to look cluttered, messy, and we did not feel as welcome. Well, happy to report the "Anaya's Way" is back! Mario is running the restaurant now and has a personal touch in making sure that the service, the food, and more importantly, the way you feel when you come in and when you leave are the best it can be! The chips and salsa were fast and the salsa is very spicy!! Good classic margaritas (ours came in the shaker) with fresh lime juice! We had the combo fajitas $24 which came with guacamole, sour cream, salsa fresca, traditional refried beans, rice & grilled steak and chicken. Very flavorful with lots of red and green peppers. Food was so-so. Service was good. Restaurant was empty. Only one take out order was picked up during my hour-long stay.

Our group of four came for an early dinner on a Saturday night and had wonderful service, drinks and food! Anaya's decor is vibrant with the colors & scapes of Mexico. It's festive, fun & welcoming. ¡Qué mono! There is a bar area separate from the dining area and our group agreed we'd love to go back and enjoy that area one day soon. The chips and salsa are delicious. The chips came out fresh, warm and nicely salted too which I personally love. Not too thin and not too thick, we really enjoyed those chips. The salsa packs some delightful heat and is so very flavorful & is more of a thick non chunky consistency. We also added the queso dip and that was also really good. Two of us ordered the skinny margarita with a side shot of Herradura resposado to float on top since they did not have añejo. I was happily surprised that the margarita came in a full shaker cup with strainer & a cute mini salted margarita glass. The marg was made with fresh lime juice and was so very tasty and balanced with the orange liquor, agave and tequila. For dinner I ordered the Steak Tampiquena and it was outstanding. The mole sauce was on the sweet vs bitter side and I could definitely taste a chocolate/peanut buttery goodness. I bet their chicken mole is really good! The beans and rice accompaniments tasted fabulous too. One in our group ordered the carne asada and that was some of the best we've all ever tasted! It was well marinated, cooked to perfection and so very tender. My friend texted me the next day and said she woke up thinking about that carne asada. Stop in this plaza but I took it was a while ago when a nice opened up I wanted to give this neighborhood place a try. Such a great sit-down restaurant that feels very personal with the staff not only at the bar but in the restaurant that are very great. When it comes to the food there's a wide selection of items including burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and other Mexican flairs should be pretty easy to hit the spot. As a family, we've been multiple times and the favorite drink for the kids is the Mango Lemonades. No refills, but to them, it's their "specialty" drink like the Cadillac & Diablo Margaritas are to me :-) Burrito Loco is the family favorite but we always mix it up with a 2 or 3 items combo that includes enchiladas & tacos. I've also had enchiladas surprise (yeah, with 2 eggs Sunnyside up). The Camarones Chipotle is also good and to end the night we always have an order of Spapillias... The pressure was great. Closing at 9 pm we arrived after 8. My cousins visiting from Spain and never been to Anaya's but went because of the yelp reviews. They were so kind and helpful! The food was amazing for everyone! I had the carne asada plate and for dessert we shared the flan. The carne was delicious. I've had better flan, being from Puerto Rico, it tasted more like a bread pudding to me. But the family was incredibly happy for my choice and everyone left a fan. Thank you for the gracious service. Returned to Anayas only to discover they do not have red Chile con Carne on the menu. The server was borderline rude and told us theybhave worked there 6 years and has not been on the menu for 6 years. I explained we were there 9 months ago and I had the Red Chile con Carne dinner plate. She all but called me a liar. After talking to the manager we were told it is occasionally a Sunday Special. Perhaps we dined with them on a Sunday. We must have, but after the interaction with the server, I have no desire to go back. We are only in the area every so often. Being here about a year ago I was very disappointed about the food and the service. Today I gave it a new try with my wife and a very good friend and luckily it was excellent in general. Saw the place as I happened to be driving by and it caught my eye. The place is very much that of a local business that is trying hard to do a great job and they nail it! They greeted me promptly inside the door. Got me seated, chips & salsa, and a drink order entered within just couple of minutes. The staff were very pleasant and interactive. The salsa had a bit of heat to it; not enough to make you count scovile units, but enough to make you enjoy one of their tasty margaritas. This is our new favorite Tempe Mexican sit down restaurant. Hubby is totally obsessed with the fajitas. They come with generous portions of sour cream and guacamole and the plate is absolutely heaped with chicken, onions and peppers. I like their combo platter. I've been going to Anayas fairly regularly for the past few years, and have been happy with the food, especially during busy periods (Friday and Saturday evenings). And the service has been uniformly friendly and professional. Unfortunately, the owners have raised prices so drastically in the past couple of years, that I've had find a new go-to. Most recently (October, 2024), they raised prices across the board roughly 20-25%. The U.S. Food inflation rate over the past year has run about 2.3%, so they can't claim that as the cause. Diners in the area may want to look to La Casa De Juana or Valle Luna, both of which offer comparable food at notably lower prices. read more
