These guys are professional, courteous, and prompt with their work. Are they bit higher price compared to lets say getting work done at Saks or Barneys? I had a fantastic experience with getting 2 pair of pants altered that were too large after I'd lost some weight a number of years ago. I loved the pants so much that I couldn't bear to send them to the donation box. Making an appointment was very easy on Yelp! I picked the pants up recently and was incredibly impressed with the fine workmanship! The pants now fit like gloves, and fit so much better than when I had first purchased them. Perfect. The shop itself is up one escalator that's in a high rise on 3rd Ave right above 49th, in a beautiful mezzanine-level store. The owner was lovely and I will certainly be returning if I need any more tailoring. I've read some reviews that said pricey, but the tailoring is so superb that I would say it's worth every penny. read more

Juan is an actual miracle worker! I brought in a velvet tapestry dress (with intricate pattern) to let out 1-1.5inch around the waist area. Since there's not much excess fabric to work with, Juan took out each individual seams in the front panel to help me preserve the dress's original corseted look (the pattern between the seams are also originally connected which I was worried letting out each seam would ruin the look, yet he manage to sew it back immaculately with no traces of alterations!) I'm so happy that I'm able to fully zip up the dress right now and it looks how it's supposed to look in the first place. Definitely recommend! I was trying to find a tailor to fix these two holes in a sweater. I was quoted $30 for each hole which seemed expensive but if they did a good job I didn't mind. They also had a yelp check in deal for $10 off and an online promotion that took $5 off if you made your reservation online. The online system was very simple. Alterations is located within a building where there are a lot of other companies on the same floor. They're the closest one when you turn to the left so it wasn't inconvenient to get to. It was also super close to a lot of trains. I arrived a few minutes early and dropped off my sweater. The person I gave it to was really nice. They offered a lot of options for fixing the hole and told me if I wan't satisfied with how it looked I didn't have to pay. They also offered a life time guarantee on the garment. I picked up my sweater about a week after and the hole was perfectly sewn! I wasn't sure how great it was going to be because it was merino wool but it looked like there wasn't even a hold to begin with. The person who altered the sweater told me that the job wasn't as difficult as it looked at quoted me $30 for the whole mend. With all the promotions that came down to $15. I'm really happy with how everything went and I'm going to bring more garments here in the future! read more

The work is solid, the tailors are friendly and know what they're doing, and the location is convenient. I've had a few blazers and suits tailored there and have been happy with everything. The online check-in is convenient and makes for an appointment with individual attention--way better than having alterations taken care of at the dry cleaners. I've also called ahead to schedule a pick-up and I've always been treated with courtesy. I will mention that the pricing is reasonable but not cheap, which has prompted me to consider whether or not some things I own are worth getting tailored in the first place. This is more a reflection on trying to change my mindset about what I wear and recognizing that quality and skill are worth paying for, but I would encourage you to talk through your budget and your goals with them beforehand so you can have an idea what's possible. Fantastic work. I had a great blue chambray tuxedo from JCrew that I was unfortunately swimming in until I brought it to Martin. What a rip off!! I just stepped into this place to get a price quote for custom tailoring my suit jacket and slacks... they quoted me $400! Granted, there's a lot of hemming to be done, but I was expecting half this price, at the very most! Call me cheap... I'm sorry but nothing they could do to my suit would be worth that much money... maybe they use gold thread? Maybe they sprinkle magic powder that makes you fly when you put on the jacket? For this price, I might as well go down to VA where I know a tailor and spend about half the money, bus fare included! read more

This is a shop full of competent tailors staffed by polite front-desk workers. Furthermore, I was impressed by their embrace of modern booking and bookkeeping. Many tailors and dry cleaners exist in the "pen & paper" universe. This stereotype is almost accepted as "the way things are." I am happy there are merchants willing to push the envelope. Unfortunately, what was good at the front end was very bad at the tail. I had one specific request: "I need these pants next Thursday before I fly out of town. Also, I am happy to pay for rush service if that is necessary." On their advice, I did not pay for rush service. At 5:30PM that thursday (close to EOD) I arrive to find that the pants had not even been started. Furthermore, they had issues determining who was responsible for the order. Hands flew into the air, and the anonymous blame game began. I care not for the internal affairs of a tailor shop. When I pay a high-end sticker price for tailor services, the least I can expect is the agreed upon completion date. To their credit, they finished the work within the next hour and a half (by making someone stay late). They would have won my business had they offered a refund of the inconvenience of hanging around Bryant Park for two hours, and then hightailing it to the airport. The tailor job was very nice, and given that they can 'iron out' the fulfillment aspect of the business, they may be worth the trouble. UPDATE: Shortly after my initial two star review, the owner wrote me a thoughtful note apologizing for the prior service. He is putting new process in place. He assured me that he hopes to run a positive business for each customer. I have since upgraded my review +1 star in hopes that I can encourage more businesses to take the high road. Business people can create better communities, better products, and a better life for everyone around them. I believe in second chances, and so I urge potential customers to believe in them as well. read more

Over rated and over price. The person who was helping wasn't helpful at all. He was playing with his phone when I asking his professional opinion. Also they didn't hemmed the pants the way I want and I ended up going back there again. Disappointed! After settling my matters with the owner and receiving a full refund and a store credit on my next tailoring job I will still keep this rating until I go back to Alterations Master Tailor Shop and see if that policy holds true and the work is done properly the first time. The price is ridiculous, they were asking $200 for shortening sleeves from shoulder for a coat. And JD or DJ(I kinda forget, their boss) said it would take 4 hours man labor for this alteration, which is totally BS. The most ironic part was, they were pricing on each side of sleeve, meaning I need to pay for $100 for each sleeve. Such an interesting joke. I have been in between tailors for a while now, not being able to find anyone that can do quality work and also reliably meet deadlines. I am so happy I found this shop! Juan does impeccable work, and is also great at recommending what needs to be done, which I don't think is something that can be taught or learned, it's more innate. Tailoring is all they do. Don't get thrown off when you walk in, I think the whole floor is a bunch of guys tailoring clothes even though the stereotype is probably that women are seamstresses. Funny how that works out in the real world. They have a tailor measure you both before you drop off clothes and they have one look at your fit after it's done when you try it on. It's a nice attention to detail but this place is a little pricey to be honest. At most dry cleaners you can get a pair of pants hemmed for $15 a piece. At Alterations it cost me $33 for two pairs of pants and that was after $15 of discounts. (make sure you use the one on their site and also Yelp!) The attention to detail to me is worth it, I've had to take back pants one too many times depending on what was being done and it's nice to get it right the first time. The online reservation system is a little much to get used to. Once you place your order you have to actually call them in order to schedule a pickup. Would be nice if they could follow up with you but this is a minor nuisance. Also this place is filled with clothes from wall to wall. It seems like business is booming... if you need something rushed, call and ask them ahead of time before you bring it in. They seem to be always super busy! read more

Returning customer: I had two suits this time. One was cut baggier than I like, even though it was my size, and one was a a size to big. I remembered the amazing job they did shrinking an entire suit two whole sizes last time so this was the logical place to go back to. They didn't disappoint! I brought in a new suit that was way too large for me to be altered and asked that it be finished by a specific date because I was going away that weekend and needed the suit. The suit was ready on the exact date I asked for and it fits like a glove. They did an amazing job. They even took it in a bit more while I waited so that it was perfect. Also, when I first brought the suit in they calculated the cost incorrectly but when I came back to pick up the suit they immediately told me I had been overcharged and credited my card. I have been recommended to this place through a good friend of mine and I must say that Alterations Master is top notch. I have gotten a lot of tailoring done throughout the city and have been recommended to many places, but none of them were as good as Alterations Master was. I have recently lost a lot of weight and wanted to fix my old clothes without having to buy new ones. They really know how fit works. I had my suit pants and jeans fixed up in less than a week and it was much better than what I imagined. Normally, when you get alterations on several sizes up, they tend to look awkward or unnatural. But, these guys fixed everything perfectly and I am very satisfied. Plus, they have online deals and Yelp coupons that will discount the total bills. The price is fair and alterations are done precisely and promptly as requested. To make things even better, there is a warranty on all of the alterations, which means you can change it whenever you want after the initial alteration. Pricey, but worth it. Their quality is amazing. I believe the sign of good business is how you handle difficult situations, A-Masters proved to be a great business in such a situation. I brought a very nice suit in for alterations. First you need to make an appointment online for drop-off/measurements. They provided great email documentation and a time frame of when to expect it to be done. Next came the trouble... completed by date rolls around and no word from them. Then I try calling/emailing. No response from email, phone line has answering service, who I believe never gave any messages to A-Masters. So a week rolls around, and I REALLYY needed my suit. I finally get through to A-M and go in for pickup. The fit was not completed, but it was not because they brought a specialist in who works specifically with the designer suit I had. Pretty impressive. I explained my unhappiness with the suit not being completed on time and not getting a response from my inquires. The owner apologized and explained that they were have extraordinary problems with staff/loss in the family. He rushed completion of the suit and gave me a pretty steep discount as an apology. I got the suit and it looked unbelievable. They had made subtle tweaks to make a perfect fit, and the seams were incredible. I could not imagine anyone doing a better job. It seems like it is a great place from all the Yelp reviews, but I must have caught them at the worst time. They messed up big time with me, but I am happy with the quality and knowing how much they regret it and how they tried to make it up to me. read more

However, of all the vendors and shops and relatives and friends I enlisted to lend a hand Alterations Master has been the one element that I haven't had to worry about at all. From my initial visit everyone in the office was friendly, kind and super laid back and took the time to answer every single little question I had. From bustle, to hem, to the little boob things that needed to be sewn in - every detail was attended to with precision and professionalism. JD runs a tight shop and everyone seems to be on point, attentive and prompt. I had to go back for 5 fittings (over the winter I had a bit of a hibernation period and for a month the dress totally didn't fit) JD didn't stress and just had me come back in when the weather was warmer and sure enough the fit was fine again. We found this place through Yelp and are so happy with the results. JD helped us during our consultation and fittings. They do amazing work there. We liked that they had weekend hours. It can be a little hectic over the weekends, so be prepared to have them jumping back and forth between clients while you change. We had our suits taken in all over the place: waist, taper the legs for a more fitted look, brought in the chest and arms too. They basically changed our suits from American style, loose fitting to a slimmer fit European look. Also they took in my jeans, both in the waist and lifting the butt. Everything was done to perfection. They also offer a one year guarantee where you can bring it in for additional touch-ups for the next year. I am constantly getting compliments on my suits, people asking where I buy them from, or what brand they are..... The truth is, if you are spending a thousand dollars on a suit, spend a little extra maybe $100-$200 to have it properly tailored. Although I've been to other tailors, and had them do some work, JD is the only person I trust with my "good" suits. I even took him a cheaper suit, 3 piece Tommy Hilfiger that he tapered well enough to make it look like a $500-$800 suit. When looking at suits in magazines, these are often clipped in the back to make them look more fitted than they actually are. I showed my wife the difference between off the rack, compared to a well tailored suit, and the difference easily noticeable. read more

Alterations Master does really great work. We went there to get my boyfriends suit pants slimmed down, waist taken in, and arms lengthened. I think the total was $150 but you really get what you pay for: - The tailors there know how a suit SHOULD fit, and don't rely on a novice suit buyer to explain what they want. This is the best benefit, because a $400 suit can look custom made with good tailoring - You have an appointment to try on the clothes for the fitting, and another appointment for pickup, where you try on the clothes again so that you can be sure it fits. - Alterations are guaranteed for a year, which was great, my boyfriend didn't have to worry about not slimming the pants enough. They will re-alter again if you change your mind (or change sizes) within a year at no cost. - The private try on rooms are spacious and well lit with a large mirror and a sofa, so its a very comfortable experience Great craftsmanship and great customer experience.
