Had some cocktails and Mexican food at this restaurant on Stolp Island. It conveniently is located across the street from the Paramount Theater and is a popular stop before going to shows. Altiro has a couple locations, including this one in Aurora. Pretty much like a tapas bar with small bites. The prices can get expensive but there's some affordable good things. Came here in the evening and it was busy. It's still got plenty of seating so we were able to get to the bar in front. This is a place where they specialize in tapas. Not as much to eat. Of course the food comes out faster though. It's about $12 for a basic cocktail. The fancier ones are a few bucks more. It's about $10 for an appetizer. We got the Al Trio Salsa. Basically it's a few salsas along with chips. These were made with crudo, habanero, and morita peppers. Ranged from mild to burn your mouth hot. The rest of the menu has the usual things like tacos and stuff. Great place to have Mexican style street food. It's closed Mondays. The menu is pretty limited for vegans and vegetarians. read more

Our reservation was for 6pm on a Friday night for five people. Tried to order a bottle of white wine - we were told they were sold out. We ordered empanadas - again, sold out. We had to ask 3 times for knives. Never were any fresh plates provided for a several rounds of tapas. It was a complete embarrassment. First time here. Parking was challenging. The restaurant was clean and bright. The staff was all very nice. For a tapas place where you want to share plates, the tables were very small. We had a variety. The ceviche was excellent. The mixed drinks were very tasty. The barbacoa was average and had pieces of bone in it. The shrimp with ravioli was very good. Overall, a bit disappointed with my visit. We made reservations and were seating right away but that was one of the few highlights. Our waitress was nice, but I felt like she didn't know anything about the menu. I'm a small person but the tables were tiny and I felt so cramped the entire time. The drinks were good. Absolute garbage. $20 gets you four baby tacos with hardly any food in them. Took them 25 minutes to bring me a f'n beer. Ordered shrimp tacos on the second run and it was basically one shrimp cut into tiny pieces. no salsa, no chios. The only thing they are good at is filling your water glass. I will definitely be coming back here! My aunt and I wanted to grab dinner before going to the casino, and stopped in here based off of their great reviews. Walking in, the ambiance and decor was super inviting and bright, filled with fresh flowers and plants. The seating was super nice too, with a mixture of comfortable couches and chairs. For appetizers, we ordered the patata brava. I wasn't a huge fan as it was pretty different than the typical patatas bravas I've had in the past. That said, my dinner entree completed made up for it and more! I went with the al tostada and it was INCREDIBLE. The lamb was perfectly cooked and sooo tender. I loved that the tacos came deconstructed with the warm tortillas, slow cooked lamb, and veggies so I could create the perfect bite for each taco. Service was strange. Took 40 mins to get one drink in a drink order for my friend. Took fifteen minutes for a metal spoon. We arrived when the restaurant was nearly empty and the two other tables were already finishing up. Ordered soft serve mango and three time the order arrived incorrectly, a different item brought out and the third time had alcohol and I did not request added alcohol. An hour later we get food served. After making it very clear there is a food allergy (CELIAC), and asking conscientiously about gluten and gluten-free items, was suspicious the potato shoe strings could be cross-contaminated (fried in the same deep fryer as empanadas perhaps) but was then assured "everything here is gluten-free" while the rest of the table is served their empanadas (clearly not GF). We had three random napkins thrown down on the table and after reminding them we had no silverware were given only two forks for a table or five. Each rare visit from a server was boggling like this. I ate my steak tacos with the shoe strings potatos on top and the "virgin" mango soft serve and lo and behold hours later I'm writhing in intense intestinal pain and just vomited. In addition to this, the microscopic mini (3) scoops of guacamole the size of a silver dollar coin as an appetizer for five adults also confused us. The vibe and location is really great, especially that it's in the downtown area. However, I truly felt like the food was overpriced for the quality that it was. The guacamole trio $14, and the chorizo/steak tapas had bits of steak in it that were chewy. Not to mention we had to sit in the seat by the window that are kind of a high top but not really? The seats really should be higher. Made for an interesting vibe considering I had made a reservation online. In addition, the toilet seat in the women's bathroom was cracked, and it really just doesn't makes sense why a restaurant that up charges their food, can't spend $20 on a new toilet seat. The food and drinks are good- innovative. Price is more on the higher end- but willing to spend if I get what I paid for. They sat us by the bathrooms and kept getting the smell of cleaning products. Service was good, but when we handed cash to pay for the bill - the vibe I got was that they prefer to take payments by credit/debit card. I'm guessing the waitress didn't find cash to give change in the first register so he had the nerve to ask minutes later if we wanted the change back (to me it's the principal of the question specially when we never said you can keep the change). I had high hopes for this visit but do hope that the feedback here is taken and the restaurant improves the way they do things. Was headed to a 1pm production of Frozen at the Paramount on a Sunday. I wanted a "park once" food & theater experience for the 4 of us which included 2 grade school kiddos. Parked at the City Lot parking garage at Downer Pl & Stolp. From there it was a quick 1 short block walk down Stolp to Galena where Altiro is located right on the corner. I had called & made an 11am reservation for the 4 of us a week ahead (not knowing if it gets crazy busy before a Paramount production). Anyhoo it was pretty empty at 11am on a Sunday with a speckling of tables occupied. The kiddos were greeted with a choice of a Frozen sticker as we sat down (adorable touch) as well as they had printed the non-Brunch kids menu on Frozen stationary (another cute touch) We ordered various Brunch & Dinner items for all of us to share. (Their full menu is available during Brunch hours). The kiddos wanted scrambled eggs (special requested) chocolate chip pancakes (Adult Brunch menu) as well as the skirt steak tacos (kids dinner menu) The little shoestring potatoes which come as a side to the kiddos tacos were a FUN touch. The kids devoured all but 1 of the chocolate chip pancakes. One of my granddaughters has a very refined palate for her age & when the plate of steak tacos landed on the table - she grabbed 1 before i could even get a photo. Next 2 & 3 were eaten also pretty fast & then for #4 she ate the steak out of the shell. The 2 adults shared the Elotito side, Fundido tacos and the Poblano chicken. More than enough & we were stuffed. Such a nice assortment for all 4 of us. After dining it's just a very short walk 1 block over on Galena to the Paramount theater. I had the Al Elotito: Traditional Mexican street vendor style: roasted corn, garlic aioli, serrano pepper, epazote, onions, cotija cheese, and chile tajin. It was very flavorful, best to share between 2-3 people. For my main course I had Ala Gallina: Grilled chicken, enchilada sauce, grilled pineapple, cilantro, and pickled red onion. It was good, very saucy. Best to split, two tacos are perfect. My friend had the carnitas tacos. It is made with pork belly cubed. I'm not a big pork belly fan so I didn't care for it. We came specifically to sit at the bar to try some cocktails & some chips & guac, but the bar is actually a lot smaller than I thought. We ended up sitting at a table and ordering some chips & salsa & guac, and some of their cocktails. I can't remember which drink I had, but it was something with bourbon in it, and it was so tasty. The entire group ordered different cocktails and we were all happy with what we ordered. The seating in here is super cute - different types of tables and chairs in the main dining area. It's very open and bright! It wasn't super busy, but our server was awesome. She made great suggestions on drinks and food, even though we were not ordering a ton. Post-theater dinner was at Altiro Latin Fusion. We made reservations and It's was a good thing because the place was crowded after the show. We were seated at a table near a drafty window so we asked to be moved. The other table wasn't that much better. We saw a number of patrons eating with their coats on because it was so cold in the restaurant. Service was lacking today from the last time we went. Maybe because they were busy or understaffed. We ordered tapas style shareables...trio of guacamole, Basque seasoned roasted potato wedges, skirt steak and pork belly street tacos, shredded lamb tapas and ended with key lime tarts. The guacamole was a very small amount 3 mounds about a 1/4 cup each. The Basque potatoes was the outstanding thing we ate today with a sunny side up egg on the top. It was so flavorful, and the potatoes were tender. The tacos we chose today were just okay, not as tasty as the ones we chose last visit. The shredded lamb tapas were good, but they came out, not as described on the menu - "shredded Slagel farm lamb, caramelized chipotle sauce, queso fresco, and sour cream, served on 4 crispy mini tortillas." They were served with steamed tortillas on the side, not crispy tortillas. I was very disappointed with the dessert. That was described as creamy - "perfectly tart and creamy filling made with organic lime juice, nestled inside a golden-brown, made-from-scratch crust." The tarts came out rock hard from the freezer. I was looking forward to a creamy Keylime filling. So disappointing. Another misleading menu item. I brought my rating down this visit because of the uncomfortable temperature in the restaurant, the inattentive service and the dessert not being creamy as described. We had to wait at the end of the meal for our server Grisel to bring the check and yet another long wait for her to pick up payment. I had to eventually flag her down. I noticed she was busy setting up tables and drying glassware at the time. There were only us and another table left in the restaurant at this time. I was pretty disappointed with our dining experience this time around. The positives were the cute atmosphere of the restaurant, the delicious cocktails, and those Basque potatoes. I would recommend giving Altiro a try, though, as you may have a better experience. I know the other times we've been here we were satisfied completely. We came here because it was close to Paramount theater. We didn't have a reservation but we sat at the bar. Service started out good then became poor later on. We ordered al camaleon and ala tostada. After getting the two meals, I wanted to order something else. It took awhile for our waitress to come back to us. I almost didn't order al chilango. I'm taking off one star because even though it was busy, our waitress should have been more attentive. The tacos were good. You get 4 for each order. Al camaleon I'll rate a 4. Shrimp was fresh and I liked the bacon and avocado with it. Unfortunately, the wait time was too long. Al chilango I got very fast. That's about 4.5. It was tasty with the shoestring potatoes and salsa, but the skirt steak could have been less chewy. Ala tostada was disappointing. I know they're tapas style but for $20, portion could have been better. They weren't kidding about mini tortillas. Some of the prices are reasonable and some aren't. Overall, I'll give a 3.5. I went to Altiro to celebrate my birthday and unfortunately, I was disappointed. Despite having a reservation, we were seated at a too small table that was directly next to a door and divider, and in a much too crowded space. We were seated in chairs that were far below the quality of the rest of the restaurant's chairs. Despite asking if we could have a different table, we were told no. We got the three guacamoles which were completely the same except for the garnishes and the elotito which was unimpressive. The chips for the guacamole were excellent and the al frito was the highlight of our meal, with a delicious slaw. The al fundido was pretty good, but we were unimpressed with the lack of flavor in the al poblano. My mojito, while good, had a huge excess of mint. While it was convenient to the paramount theater, overall, we were disappointed and will not be returning. read more

When I go for tapas I'm used to having small plates of what looks like appetizer plates to share that can be combined to make a full meal, and can be cold or hot. This is a hidden gem is downtown Aurora. Id call it high-end Mex. The margaritas were hand-spun and excellent! The hot sauces were bursting with flavor and not too hot. We had tickets to The Paramount Theater and decided to have dinner nearby. We walked in without reservations on a Thursday at 545pm to a very busy restaurant. Luckily they had a table for two!The lights were low the music was great and the setting was very romantic. We had not done any research beforehand so we went with the Tapas our gracious waiter suggested. First was the Al Alambre which is steak with chorizo ,chihuahua cheese ,bell peppers ,red onions served with a wonderful tomatillo avocado salsa. Second was the Al Poblano which had generous portions of lemon chicken under a poblano sauce with cilantro and poblano con arborio rice and pomegranate. We shared plates and rolled the offerings into the provided tortillas. Soo delicious. Honestly I was licking the avocado salsa off my fingers!We were delighted with our selection and enjoyed everything about this restaurant. We will be back but plan on making reservations this time!
