Took my son and sister here for a memorable dinner experience before leaving him for his second year at UPitt. Memorable was exactly what we got. From confirmation of the reservation to the goodbye for the host was 5 star. We walked up to the doors and greeted with a warm welcome by a host and manager. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table. The view is just breathtaking. The restaurant decor is modern yet simple and elegant. We sat in the lower section of the restaurant next to the window. Truffle popcorn and focaccia bread with pimento spread and herbed butter was brought over to us immediately. Both were so good! Our server was Jaqueline was just an absolute doll. She was so great and patient with us. She thoroughly explained the menu and specials. Answered many of our questions and we had a lot. We ordered the charcuterie and the oysters for our appetizers. The meats and cheeses were so gooooood. The oysters were so fresh and delicious tasted just like the ocean. Ridiculous how good it was! We went big for dinner!!! My sister and I both had the ribeye special with a a beautiful velvety mushroom sauce, truffle purple mashed potatoes with French string bean. It was honestly one of the most amazing steaks I've ever eaten. So flavorful, tender basically melted in your mouth. My son was feeling very adventurous and decided on trying the Colorado Lamb Rack with lavender honey jus lie, Parmesan and herb ricotta gnocchi, broccolini, whipped garlic lebhen, Roma tomato confit. Dessert he was the only with room, so he ordered the homemade vanilla bean ice cream with a chocolate drizzle. They also brought us out a little chocolate mousse tart the was fabulous as well. Captivating views, impeccable service, and decent food. From the moment we settled into our seats, the attention to detail was evident. Sweet popcorn was served as we looked at the menu. We also got complimentary bisque shooter and bread (both tasted great btw), showcasing a commitment to enhancing the dining experience. Got the duck confit bun bao for appetizer. I liked the KBBQ meat but the bun was slightly soggy. I also thought that the aioli sauce was a bit unnecessary and overpowered the bun. We also tried the Truffled procini bisque. It had a thick texture and the truffle flavor was strong. Also loved the presentation as they pour the bisque into the plate with the crispy duck confit arancini right in front of you. The arancini was crispy outside and soft inside. I also really liked the distinct sweet pear flavors you get once you bite into it. However, the bisque itself was a bit salty. For entree. We opted for their special of the day which was a prawns, scallop, mushrooms, and lobster risotto. I have to say they do seafood well here. The scallop was seared, so it was super soft and buttery. The prawns also had great flavors. However, the risotto fell slightly short, lacking a distinct lobster taste and registering a tad salty. We also got the Chilean Seabass. The seabass itself was very nicely done. So so flavorful, soft, and just melts in your mouth. I liked the mushrooms and brussel sprouts on this dish too. The crepe was alright but tasted slightly sour and I don't think it complimented the fish well. We got two complimentary chocolate mousse tarts and they tasted amazing! It was a small bite and not too sweet, which I really liked. Before leaving, we also got brownies to take home, which exemplified the thoughtful touch of the establishment. While the seafood offerings stand out, a prevalent issue across several dishes was an excess of saltiness. Very excited to finally try Altius after seeing so many great reviews! Overall our experience was very good but considering this was one of the most expensive meals I've had in Pittsburgh I was really looking for exceptional. The table we were sat at was extremely sticky for some reason and my arm and phone got covered in some sort of stickiness that was gross. I was celebrating my birthday and wanted a Prosecco or champagne but we were kind of made to feel stupid for not knowing very much about wine. Yes I'm aware red goes with stick but I wanted something more celebratory. The steak I ordered was supposed to be medium rare but definitely came out closer to medium well. I do think this is nit picky but again, this was a huge splurge and wanting something exceptional. I will say the food overall is very good. They give you popcorn when you first sit down and then focaccia after you order. We also got brownie bites to take home. The dessert was definitely the highlight and we got strawberry pretzel salad. I wish we had a better view of the city as we were sat kind of in the middle but the atmosphere was still really nice. Dinner at Altius is an experience! From the moment we walked through the doors, we were nothing but pampered. The view is spectacular from both floors, with the Duquesne Incline in the foreground. We ordered cocktails from the bar while waiting for our table: the (non-alcoholic) Lion and the Lamb and Summertime's Libation. Both beautiful and refreshing. We were treated to a salmon tartare and homemade focaccia with tomato pesto and herbed butter before our appetizers of She Crab Bisque (poured table side) and Caesar salad. Everything amazing. My husband and I had reservations here on a Saturday night at 8:45pm. We were seated on time. We actually got there a little early and waiting in the bar. The bartender that waited on us was extremely nice, making drink and wine suggestions. The drinks were very good. We really enjoyed talking to him. We were seated at one of the window tables on the bar level. The view was beautiful. Our server was a really nice person...he made great recommendations for dinner and had a wonderful sense of humor. What a wonderful and special dining experience! To celebrate our recent engagement, my fiancé's boss congratulated us with a gift card to Altius. I had never been before, but I knew we were in for a fancy meal after seeing three $ signs on Yelp. First, the location and views from Mt. Washington were amazing. Despite making an early dinner reservation, we were seated more centrally instead of along the periphery. So, unfortunately, we weren't able to appreciate the downtown skyline as the sun went down during our meal. Second, the food was incredible. We were started off with a panna cotta amuse-bouche and some fresh baked bread. We also ordered the Heron Point Crab Toast for an appetizer, which was honestly the highlight of my meal! I ordered the ribeye, which came with a delicious smoked gouda purple potato purée, broccolini, and garlic butter carrots. My fiancé raved about his order of the Footprint Farms Chicken Breast. After our meal, we were too full to even think about dessert, but were happily sent on our way with a pair of complimentary brownie bites, courtesy of the pastry team. 100% would recommend Altius to commemorate a special occasion like ours! read more

I went with my partner to celebrate his birthday. We were seated close to the window. The service was really good. The waitress was quick and explained the menu properly. Appetizer: Beef tartare--it was out of this world. The beef was raw. It tasted citrusy and the "dough" underneath was crunchy and light. Main: We ordered ribeye steak (see picture). It was juicy, tender and flavorful. One of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend. Scallops and shrimp--they were ok. The quality was good but the taste was a bit strong. The purple potato was amazing. We were full at this point when we got the "happy anniversary" mini tarte. It had caramel flavor. It was okay but definitely appreciate the gesture. Altius has reopened and has not lost a beat. What a great dinner and wonderful service. Love the low lighting and atmosphere. Yes, they still start with a flavored popcorn and it was good. Really nice cocktails and wine list. We started with the Short Rib Toast which had a tasty huckleberry jam and bone marrow mascarpone cheese. Delightful. It seemed like everyone had a different item from the entrees so our small group tried almost all the entrees and everyone was pleased with their dinner. Who would've thought that would just elevate this dish to the next level? My husband opted for the short ribs and I went for the sea bass special. Both were absolutely delicious. I will say that my husband was a little disappointed as he thought it tasted like something his grandma would throw together quick on a Sunday, and I then decided that my husband really doesn't have a clue when it comes to what goes into cooking (haha) it was very good and had that homemade savory comfort to it. I have such mixed feelings about this place. I have been to many great restaurants in Pittsburgh and other cities and based on the reviews thought this would be a new favorite. I wanted to love it so badly, but I just didn't. For one - don't even bother trying to get a window table. I honestly believe that if you ask they purposefully ignore you. To not even have the option to wait for a window table is so ridiculous to me. Naturally, we were sat in the middle of the restaurant unable to see any views - we saw a lot of other things though.. more to come on that. Let's start with the good. The drinks were fabulous, we loved our espresso martinis and chartreuse-infused drinks. I also loved this spicy bourbon drink they had. The crab toast appetizer was delicious, I highly recommend it. I also really liked the steak tartare. The complimentary popcorn was a nice touch for an amuse-bouche, and we also were given these strawberry goat cheese "ice cream" cone bites (they were just okay). Our service was okay, truthfully the server felt a little fake but I am being really critical there. Now to the bad - the garlic and ramp bisque sounded so good and many of us were excited to try it (the server also recommended it) but it was terrible. Way too salty and the mushrooms were so chewy and a very odd texture. I was very disappointed by this. The salads were just okay. I missed that the Ceasar had zattar spice (that was my bad for missing that detail on the menu). It was okay but not the best I have had. Others at the table felt their salads were just okay as well. Overall our entrees weren't bad. the sea bass was good, and my sister who ordered the chicken really liked it. My steak had potential but the sauce served over it was so overpowering and one note. I was overall disappointed. Also the chef clearly has a thing for fennel... half the menu seemed to have fennel in it. Some of our party does not like fennel so that made it tough. I would be interested in coming back during another season to see how the menu is then. Lastly, the views of the city (if you could even see them) were nice but we couldn't really see them at all where we were sat. What really struck our table was the other clientele. I normally would never comment on this and never have before but it was so striking I feel like I have to. I read some other reviews talking about some folks being denied service due to their attire. Well there were some people, women in particular, who were dressed so provocatively I am shocked that they were considered appropriate when others were not. Again, I have never even noticed what others wore in a restaurant before but it was that severe. It honestly made some of us a little uncomfortable because we felt out of place and were trying to understand who the target audience was for this restaurant. I am all for people wearing what they want and being confident but this was way beyond that on a Friday night at dinner. My partner and I went here to celebrate our six year anniversary, and the ambiance of the restaurant and creativity of the food was very stellar! We had reservations for 7:15, but were sat closer to 7:40, although they did have a bar where you could have a drink and wait for a table to open up. After being sat, we were given complimentary cheddar-ranch popcorn for a fun amuse-bouche, as well as an aperitif of a strawberry-balsamic dressing with goat cheese (my description is not doing it justice, but it was very interesting and quite different!). Now, to preface this, the restaurant was incredibly busy. We ordered a charcuterie board as an appetizer, although that never arrived. We brought this up to our waitress, and they offered to package one up for us to go, and that it would be complimentary! It would have been nice to eat it fresh, especially considering that the wait between our bread/popcorn was about 30-35 minutes, but nevertheless, we'll enjoy it the next day. For our entrées, my partner ordered the roasted duck breast, which was phenomenal! It looked too pretty to eat, but it was so tender and juicy. I ordered a filet mignon with a Hokkaido scallop, and i was a bit disappointed. The sides were delicious, but my steak was overcooked to be medium well instead of medium rare. When a gentleman came over asked about our meals, I mentioned it to him, and he offered us free dessert. While I'm not super picky about the food I receive, it was a bit unfortunate considering the price--it's definitely a splurge and want to it be tasty! Regardless, I was very pleased with the taste of everything overall. Our waitstaff was very kind and attentive, and they made sure to advocate for us as it was a special night for us and the kitchen was a bit backed up--but it happens! For dessert, I ordered the Spring Fling and my partner got the Take 5-both of which were incredible! They also brought out tiny mousse cups for us and gave us a take-home brownie bite. Sitting in the site of the old Georgetown Inn, Altius did a major renovation to the inside. All of the seats in the dining area seem to have a great view of the city and the interior seems a little brighter and more crisp. Our waitress, Brenda, was one of the most pleasant people I have met. All of her suggestions were spot on. Not only did she know the menu, but she painted a delicious vision of the meal. Altius is back! Recently reopened, I was delighted to dine at Altius this cold December evening. We have missed dining celebrations during the closing. A stolen truck crashed the restaurant months ago. The extensive damage extended into the rest rooms and took a long time for repairs. The structure and decor are safely restored to the original contemporary elegance of this Mt. Washington gem. The holiday view of downtown was especially colorful at this time of year. The tasty starter for tonight was a sour cream and chive flavored popcorn. Well balanced and not salty. The two cheese breads were accompanied by two spread additions. One of an herbed butter and a tomato chutney. The chef offered a dainty disk of what looked like a crepe topped with a vegetable paté. I missed the description, but it was delicious! We started our meal with a special cheese stuffed meatballs with Romesco sauce. The Truffled cauliflower bisque was uniquely presented. Three large chunks of lobster are in the center of the bowl with thin chips of potato standing upright. The servers poured the cauliflower bisque into the bowl from a small pitcher. Beautiful presentation and a superb fusion of flavors for this bisque. Our party enjoyed the delicious tomahawk pork chop and Chilean Sea Bass as entrees. Both of these offerings have been on the menu before and are consistent winners on the menu. Our server Jackie was efficient and pleasant. Altius never fails to disappoint anytime I've been here. Not only is their food always on point but you also can't beat their views! Last night we all started with the Truffled Cauliflower Bisque with the butter poached lobster, and my god! They poured the bisque table side on to the generous portions of the lobster! It was by far one of the best things I've had there. For my main course I had the tomahawk pork chop and it was done perfectly. Over all from the food to the service to the views it was fantastic! Been coming for years and was finally disappointed. Service really took a dive starting with the sommelier. Brought my own bottle as I have never been really impressed with what they offer especially for the money, buying a bottle of ok wine for 3x sucks. They have a corkage fee of 35, so whatever. Sommelier comes over and says "oh, great, Caymus" it wasn't Caymus. I laugh and he goes on opening the wine. After a few minutes of uncomfortable opening I ask if they ever carry Far Niente which is what I brought. He responds with "no, I don't carry wine that you can buy in a state store." Shocked, I laughed and that was that. Superiority complex by a sommelier is not new but this is Pittsburgh not NYC. That set the mood for the rest of the evening. Our actual waiter was ok at best, not very attentive and almost rude when we didn't want any dessert. Food was good but the menu is stale at this point. If you have been here a few times, I would relax on rushing back. Ambiance was great except for the loud bar patrons. We both ordered the lamb which was very tender and delicious. I guess the only thing I wish was transparent is that they charge you an extra $5 for onions and $5 for peppers on your lamb, had no idea until we got the bill. We had a complimentary escargot appetizer and delicious wines. This restaurant is more for special celebrations and we loved the atmosphere for sure. This is the most disrespectful experience I ever received. The waiters are doing their jobs professionally. However, the restaurant assistant manager Rob Zgonc displayed racism toward my friend. When my friend went complain about his poor attitude, his attitude was even worse, and threatened my friend that he would call the security to have all of us leave the restaurant. Here is a quote from the manager, "You are not my customer." I want to ask this restaurant then, "who is your customer?" Charred Ramp & Peekytoe crab risotto- Definitely recommend this. Ora King Salmon- Very light, fell apart by barley touching it with a fork. Cooked at the chefs recommendation of medium rare. Footprints farm chicken breast- absolutely delicious, the purple mashed potato's also very tasty. Here's the best part though! They send out special little treats compliment of the chef! We received a cherry vanilla mousse in a sugar cone and WOW. If I could have bought a tray of them, I would have. Absolutely amazing. I can't express this enough.. my tastebuds will never forget that little, heavenly treat. Atmosphere- Great ambiance. Very clean. Very sleek. The view is absolutely incredible, even on a rainy night. Service- Everyone was great! Cons: None, we had a wonderful time. I'm not sure if this is a "con" but something I will note, we went for an anniversary and had an amazing time. Our waitress very kindly wished us a "Happy Anniversary" but then proceeded to ask us "How many years?" - At an upscale restaurant like this, this made for an uncomfortable situation and should never be asked in my opinion. Anniversaries are celebrated for all kinds of different reasons. Also, a new couple who may be celebrating a first year anniversary might feel it's not as special since they aren't celebrating 5, 10, 20 years. Just something to keep in mind. Tableside manner.
