One keratin hair straightening, by Tiffani at Aluna salon, and my hair straightens up and behaves for 3 to 4 months. She is the hair whisperer... I used a coupon to pay a discounted price for a facial at Aluna, which I feel was reflected in a "discounted" facial -- it seems like you get what you pay for here. It was my first time visiting and I made my reservation after purchasing a 60-min Signature European facial through Groupon. I had Lissy as my esthetician. While she was professional and polite during the treatment, she was 20 minutes late to my appointment and did not do a great job explaining the products or what was happening during the facial, which can come as kind of a shock when you're eyes are closed and you're not prepared for hot steam to be hitting your face, or for her to start with the pore extracting. Overall, the salon and spa felt really clean and was in a beautiful space. The spa rooms are private and comfortable, but you can still hear all the hustle and bustle from the hair salon part of the space right around the corner. All of the products used on my skin were gentle enough to not have a reaction and I left feeling refreshed, but it was not life-changing enough to make me want to subscribe to getting facials more often. I left with the impression that I may have received better service and had a different experience had I not purchased the facial through Groupon, buyers be warned. read more

I hesitated posting a review, because the women were nice, but I did want to be honest about the experience we received. My girlfriend and I booked makeup and up-do's for a wedding. We are not from Boston, and found this salon on Google. We came in for our appointments at 4:15, and were there until almost 6:45. We were late to the 7 o'clock wedding, because we weren't expecting this appointment to take almost 2.5 hours. We each had a different stylist doing our up-do's, and I'll just say that I do not think that this is their forté. We had pictures of what we wanted (neither of which seemed complicated), and it took approximately 90 minutes to get done. Mine looked OK, but started falling out almost immediately, despite tons of Bobby pins and rubber bands. My friends looked NOTHING like her picture. Her stylist tried a couple different times, stating that she wanted to start over because she was a perfectionist, and ended with something that was far from what she wanted. At this point it was taking so long and we were already late, so we didn't have time to say anything/ get it fixed. We also had our makeup done. I asked for "natural" and "light foundation".... and got quite literally "light" foundation. I looked like a ghost! It was nowhere near my actual skin tone, and was caked in so thick. Again, didn't have time to have her redo it, so I just washed it off when i got home. The only thing I can guess, is that she thought I meant "light in color" as opposed to a light application (meaning- not heavy). At the end we were so frustrated to have spent all of this money, and be there for so long, and to be unhappy with the finished product. I think that they do have a lot of customers for haircuts and color, but I would NOT recommend this salon for up-dos or makeup application. read more

I bought a Gilt City voucher for a massage, but as a student, my schedule can get busy at times and I waited until the last minute to book it before the expiration date. When I called to make the appointment, the front desk guy berated me, telling me I should've booked this appointment 2 months in advance. I was getting increasingly annoyed on the phone during this conversation, but alas, he said I could book a massage past the expiration date and it will be still honored- hooray! Maybe this will take the bad taste out of my mouth about this place. Wrong- I arrived 35 minutes *early* to the appointment. The front desk guy started to tell me that when I'm late to an appointment, they have to cut my appointment short so it won't affect the other customers. I was so confused as to why he's telling me this, saying that my appointment is coming up and that I wasn't late. He looked at the computer and then corrected himself, telling me this was for future appointments if I was late. He then pointed me toward the seating area and said "since you're 35 minutes late... I mean early... you can have a seat over there." Fifteen minutes past when my appointment was suppose to start, the previous customer comes out and asks the front desk how long the appointment was suppose to be because she felt like hers was cut short, which he went on to tell her about the late policy I know so well. However, it seems like they don't apply the infamous late policy to heart or else why would my appointment be postponed for the previous customer? The massage was on par with the customer service- the majority of the massage was done with one hand as the other hand was used to hold the masseuse up. After getting a one-handed swipe from my shoulder to my neck for what seemed like forever (sometimes she switched it up from neck to shoulder), I was curious how many times she would swipe the other side and started counting. I counted over 100 of these swipes that were suppose to be "deep tissue." And to top it all off- as I got up from the massage table in a state from the opposite of relaxed, I looked up and noticed some kind of device on the ceiling. Based on the other reviews, it looks like bad customer service strikes again at Alina Salon Spa. I purchased a Groupon thinking I would give this place a shot before sticking with a salon and I was extremely disappointed with how I was treated. First, the receptionist was extremely aloof and curt when I walked in then turned it around completely with another client arrived, asking to take her coat and offering her tea. Next, my stylist Chelsea proceeded to cut my hair for a total of 5 minutes. 5 MINUTES before burning my scalp so much with the hairdryer that I had to pull away multiple times. I told her what I wanted and that kind of haircut does not take 5 minutes. After, the receptionist judgmentally reminds me that a normal haircut is $75 when I'm putting in my tip, which to be honest with you, I shouldn't have provided at all. I really don't like posting negative reviews, especially since the hairstylist I wanted to see is very good. Unfortunately I had a horrible experience with booking and my appointment. I phoned the salon, made an appointment, and confirmed it the night before. I showed up at the salon for my appointment, and the door was locked. Confused, I called the salon. The receptionist told me to wait one moment while she called the hair stylist. Five minutes later, I receive a message telling me the hair stylist isn't coming in and that my appointment was cancelled. Unacceptable and extraordinarily disappointing. For a client to come all the way to your salon at the time of appintment and receice zero prior notification of the cancelled appointment? I would not recommend this salon. read more

Aluna has a beautiful space on Newbury street! Unfortunately my haircut was bad. The layers were poorly done, they were flat and dull and just made my hair look poofy. No shape, no bounce. When I walked out I looked like I was wearing an Asian conical hat on my head. I couldn't relate to the laissez-faire attitude at Aluna salon. The stylist asked me if I wanted a blow-dry or if I wouldn't mind walking out with wet hair. Hmm..decisions, decisions. Also, I had asked the stylist to cut my hair a specific length, I wanted to take a considerable amount of hair off and she said she wouldn't because, according to her "expertise," I didn't have the right hair type for that length. I had never heard that before. So I walked out with just as much hair as when I walked in. Cool. I suspect it was the stylists lack of skill and fear of taking risk that prevented her from getting in there than because of my "hair type." I have gorgeous, wavy, luscious hair, btw. Shortly after, I went to a different stylist at a different salon and got exactly the length I wanted without hesitation with beautiful, shapely, bouncy layers. My hair looks amazing flipped in any direction. I barely have to spend time styling it as the haircut is so good that my hair takes its own gorgeous shape and style with little effort. Words really cannot describe the amazing experience that I had at Aluna with Liliya. But I'll try! ;) I was in desperate need of a trip to the salon before a big work meeting the next day so I googled the salon nearest my work with the best ratings. The clearest choice seemed to be Aluna so I called to see if there happened to be any last minute appointments. It had been several months since I had gotten my hair done. This factor mixed with the fact I had switched around a couple of stylists meant my hair was in a rough place canvas wise. I had several different shades going on that were in four different color blocks/distinct lines. Dark virgin hair at roots then a mousy brown then an orange/brassy color followed by a platinum blonde. It was BAD! Word to the wise - don't neglect your roots for too long and find a good stylist! When I called Aluna and inquired about a last minute opening, the receptionist was very helpful and asked a lot of questions about what I was looking for before she set me up with Liliya who happened to be free. I walked in about 15 minutes after I hung up and was immediately impressed by the luxurious, upscale vibe that the salon so effectively puts on for clients. It was incredibly clean and modern and I felt good just by being there. Liliya greeted me with a handshake and a smile and offered to get me coffee, tea, or water so I took her up on the coffee because coffee = happiness. She then sat me down and quickly hung up my coat. So thoughtful! She assessed the situation and asked what I was looking for so I gave her a quick run down of what I was hoping for and showed a couple of pictures. I asked for a partial highlight (my attempt at another quick fix for the top layer) but she offered her professional recommendation to do a full highlight and showed me the discolored sections in the back. I saw her point and got the impression almost immediately that I could trust her and her opinion so I agreed. She then started the process and was very accommodating throughout. She had a very gentle touch and worked very efficiently to get every strand that needed to be blended. At no point did I feel as though she was rushing or wanting to get me done so she could go home for the day. She even stayed an hour and a half past the time they were supposed to close to finish my hair. I was blown away by her hospitality and patience! Also, the washing stations at Aluna are AMAZING and the best I have ever experienced hands down. They recline and have a very relaxing massage mechanism that the stylist turns on for you while they wash your hair. Liliya even massaged my scalp and never once dripped water on me! Magic fingers I swear. She finished up with the styling and blow out after giving me a quick trim, and I was speechless. She exceeded my expectations exponentially. She took my mix match color bag of a head to a cool, ash blonde that is TO DIE. It looks and feels very healthy and smells amazing from the products she generously used while styling. Liliya saw how much I loved it and even offered to take pictures for me! So sweet!!! To top it off, after some light conversation, I discovered she's been in the business for 20+ years. I wasn't surprised! And you cannot beat the price for the service you receive at Aluna in every aspect. Trust me - the experience/service/atmosphere is priceless! I have lived in Boston for three years and have tried so many salons around town and this is the first time where I know I will be back and will stay. BLONDES-GO SEE KRISTIN!! I purchased a Groupon for a full foil, cut and blow dry at Aluna after reading some reviews for the salon. I have been coloring my hair for years and I am very picky when it comes to my color. But after looking through the salons Instagram I noticed incredible pictures of Dyego's Work and thought he might be the right stylist to choose. I purchased my Groupon and booked an appointment with Dyego for about 4-5 weeks out. But when my scheduled appointment was approaching, I received a confirmation email saying that my appointment was rescheduled with Brenda. I called the salon in a panic knowing that the stylist I had really wanted was Dyego. The receptionist was very kind and explained that Dyego had unfortunately extended his time off and would not be back in the salon by my appointment date. I was heartbroken and in a panic I went back the salon's Instagram to review the work of other stylists. The first image I saw was a bright blonde full foil, and the caption on the picture had Kristin's name beneath it. I asked the receptionist if she was available for the upcoming week and she told me that Kristin would be back in the salon after Tuesday. I booked the appointment somewhat hesitantly but happy to have my roots touched up by a new stylist on such short notice. When I arrived for my appointment with Kristin I sat in her chair and Allowed her to look at my regrowth and past highlight mishaps that I was attempting to recover from. I could tell that Kristin really listened when I told her I preferred a very bright, but ashy blonde. She asked if I would like a toner (gloss) to even things out- but that it wasn't covered in the price of the Groupon. I told her I had no problem paying the difference for the toner, because I know what a difference it can make. When I told her I was working to grow out my hair, she promised not to cut too much off the length- and she didn't. She took barely 1/2 inch off despite the uneven haircut I had been growing out from another salon. I am so incredibly pleased with my hair, and I will definitely go see Kristin again. read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE Poor Value - Not professional - Not on time My first time having a Brazilian Blowout. I didn't know that the Brazilian blowout process would cause chemical fumes. The thing is that they even didn't tell me about it when they know it was my first time having this hair treatment service. My eyes felt like burning and the chemical fumes almost made me dizzy. Then they started to open the window and told me to close my eyes to avoid the chemical fumes (they should of told me about this at first). The service itself should be done in a well ventilated area of the salon and should provide a gas mask to prevent clients breathing the chemical fumes. I concern about how it affects my health as well as the hairstylist's health in the long term. I want to wash my hair to get rid of the chemical smell but the hairstylist told me to wait 4 days to wash my hair. Though most places say that you can wash your hair immediately after a Brazilian Blowout. This made me wonder if they provided me a keratin treatment (which is cheaper) but charged me a higher price and told me it was Brazilian blowout while it's not. I want to wash my hair to get rid of the smell but at the same time I'm afraid it would wash off the treatment chemical too (I spent $400 on it so...) Also, I called and ask how much the service cost. But they up charged me $50 more when I'm there. The whole process and final result don't worth $400 at all. But the worst thing is that now I'm having nose and throat irritation + eye stinging. read more

I came here with a Nift, and the experience was okay. Pros: The salon is beautiful- large, trendy looking and has a great ambience. I saw Chelsea, who seemed very knowledgeable. Cons: I arrived on time and had to wait half an hour to be seen. I've never waited so long before to see a stylist, and no one checked on me or warned me that she needed more time because she was finishing up with another client. The hair color came out okay, but a few days later when I was blow drying it straight, I noticed some of my hair was still gray. It looked fine on the top of my hair, but in the back and on the sides, there were a lot of gray areas. I think the stylist didn't leave the color on long enough. Or maybe she only used semi permanent on my roots, and it didn't hold. Either way, for $200 this should not have happened. read more

I have to say that I usually hate the way people style my hair after a hair cut and go home to immediately redo it but he did a great job. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. They by far are the worst when it comes to treating customers with respect. Not at all professional, every time I called they would make me feel like I was bothering them and as if they couldn't care less whether I went to them or not. Someone gifted me this as a special treat and I feel bad that their money went to them and not some place more worthy. I will definitely be steering away as many people as possible from here. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who has had some of the same experiences as other people have. I had the Gilt Coupon and did a facial and a massage. From purchasing to completion, here are the details: 1 - Receptionist is rude and makes you feel like you've found some secret number that you shouldn't know about. Not helpful or inviting. 2 - Facial First: Woman who did my facial was very very kind and very nice. I did find some parts of it strange, however. At one point in the facial she put on a mask and just left the room for 10 minutes and left me to stare at the patched ceiling. Every other place I have gotten a facial has given me a head/neck or hand massage during the mask. Big bummer. 3 - Massage Second: When I went for the massage I was 15 minutes early. Didn't get into my 4pm appointment until at least 4:15. They have you fill out a sheet and let them know on what you'd like to focus. Agree with others that they place you in a strange waiting section where you are basically sitting with someone else as they get their hair cut. Either they use that paper as a time filler, or they just don't care about what you actually write. I also had to put on a half towel (kind with velcro around the chest), but it was so gross, old and dingy that it wouldn't stay on. Getting face down on the table shouldn't have been this huge production but because the towel was so old, I needed a robe too because he was in the room. There is paper on the bed.. think doctor's office exam table. YIKES! DID I BOOK THE WRONG APPOINTMENT!? Makes it less relaxing when you're getting a massage and the paper is crumpling. Massage itself was nice, but was a little disappointed that the concerns I spent filling out on the paper weren't acknowledged. I have been looking for a new salon/stylist and have suceeded! I bought a groupon to come here for highlights/a cut. When I got there, Diego at the front desk was super nice and offered me cookies/water, etc. I waited about 5 minutes and then met Dyego who would be doing my hair. He was also awesome. He was super engaged in what I wanted, what would look good, etc. He told me what his opinion was on what I should do, which I appreciated, and went with. A few hours later I had possibly the best cut/color I've had in awhile. I was super happy! My hair looks exactly how I have been wanting it to. The staff was all super sweet when I was leaving too, raving about the cut etc. and very personable. The salon itself is a great space, bright, modern. Vibrating chair for when you get your hair washed. The price is average, not outrageous. Finally, I appreciated that Dyego recommended products, but didn't push me to buy any. I've been here twice and both times I've had a great experience! The first time I came was through Gilt, I had bought two blowouts for the price of one. Scheduling the appointment was easy enough, I called two days before NYE weekend and was surprised that they could take me in on that Friday. I loved the way that it looked when I walked in. I'm not a salon snob, I've gotten my hair cut at all kinds of places, but I really think it adds something when it's nicely decorated. I checked in and waited a bit, and I was met by David to do my blowout. He was so nice and got to work on my blowout. During the process, he mentioned that I would look great with shorter, textured hair, and it was like music to my ears because I was thinking about getting something exactly like that so it was nice to get confirmation that it would look good on my face shape. David's blowout was amazing! Got so many compliments on it, and because I enjoyed my hair and the salon, I decided to book an appointment for a haircut with David. My appointment was today and I am loving my haircut! David really knows what he's doing and he was super fast, it was over before I knew it. He did exactly what he said he was going to do, I got collarbone length hair, very textured hair, and lots of volume which I was seriously lacking. I'll definitely be back in a couple of months to get a touch-up and I will be booking with David. I have never wrote on yelp before, but since this was the first time I paid so much for my hair and hated it so much at the same time I wanted to share my experience. So a month ago I went to aluna salon, which I found on groupon. When I got there I told the stylist (michelle wang)what I wanted. She tells me that for $120 (the deal from groupon) I wouldn't get the color I wanted. What I wanted was an ash/platinium hair. So since I really wanted that color, I agreed to pay more ($300 total) thinking it was worth it. It was not. The wash part took so long that I thought I was going to be so pleased with the result. No. My hair color was nowhere close to what I wanted. I have been blonde for a long time so I told her before that I was tired of the yellow and wanted more of a white blonde. I was so disappointed. Then when she was styling my hair, she was more busy looking at the time, because she was concerned about her next client. Style was included in the deal from groupon but she just rushed it. And I know I was late, but that's why I called before, to make sure they still had time to take me and wouldn't have to rush. My hair was so dry that I don't know what she did( I was paying too for treating my dry hair). It felt like hay. I know my hair gets dry because of the highlights I do. But never I have been to a hair salon and have had my hair feeling like it did. And Michelle kept telling me that she wanted me to go home and do a treatment. what was she talking about? I didn't go to the hair salon to go back home and wash my hair again?! And she told me she wanted to see me again in 3 months. When I told her I wouldn't be able to come back at that time, she tells me that 'I was lucky that she had not charged me for a color repair because it was kind of what she had done'. I mean who says that to someone they just met. Also, if that's what you did then just charge me for that. But if you don't, then don't go throwing it in my face. Then I go home kind of upset and decided to message her on instagram. She never replies. The next day I see she posted a picture of my hair ( didn't even ask if it was okay) and when I commented there saying my hair wasn't what I had asked and my hair was so dry (etc..) she just removed the post. Then yesterday she posted a picture of someone with blonde hair, and my friend commented on it saying basically the same thing as I had done on my ( now deleted) post, but Michelle just blocked her. So to conclude: this was the worst hair salon I have been to ( well the worst hair stylist because I only know Michelle) and I will never go back there again. The front desk is extremely disorganized and hard to work with. I purchased a groupon for the sole purpose of getting my hair done before I wedding I am attending this weekend. I scheduled the appointment for tomorrow (a Wednesday...the only day I could go after work). I recieved a call from the stylist tonight asking if I was going to make it to my appointment. The guy at the desk had written in the wrong day and tried to blame me for the mistake saying that isn't something he would do. When I tried to find an appointment that would fit in my schedule, he said he was unable to make it work. It is too short notice to get my hair done anywhere else before the wedding...so looks like I bought a groupon for nothing.. read more

I had a haircut and balayage with Michelle today and it was wonderful! Michelle is amazing and I'm so happy with the way my hair came out. Aluna also has a nice big space with a relaxing atmosphere. read more

I never realized how important trust is in a stylist until I came to this salon... The Good: Salon is very clean and well organized. I got offered something to drink (water, tea) twice. The Bad: First Strike: When the stylist, Liliya, was ready for me (15 mins late), she immediately lead me to the cutting station. I began to wonder if the groupons didn't come with a wash. She asked me how much I wanted my hair cut and was to the point, and within a MINUTE of meeting me, she cut off 4 inches of hair WHILE IT WAS DRY (2 inches more than I wanted). I immediately became so uncomfortable with the haircut and how it was being done, but the damage was already done so I had to anxiously wait for it to be over, nervous about what might come next. After cutting off too much hair right at one go, she lead me to wash my hair. Strange but fine. Second Strike: When the stylist was going to do the final touches, she didn't take note to how my hair was parted, and immediately parted it down the center (who does that anymore??). A good stylist should take note, and if they didn't take note- they should ask before cutting! I had to stop her and make her part it on the side, but she didn't seem to care or to be sorry. Third Strike: The stylist had me STAND while she did the finishing touches on my hair. Not to be lazy, but they have the chairs that increase in height for a reason. What's the point of going to a salon if they make YOU rotate your body to cut your hair? Fourth Strike: My hair was in my face the whole time. She didn't seem to have a high attention to detail when she was cutting my hair, and most of the appointment was drying my hair. While cutting my hair, she did everything at one go, but when drying my hair, she did it in pieces, clipping my hair on the top of my head, but she did not wrap it in a way that kept it neat; as a result, it became very knotty and she was TUGGING at my knot to try to get it out, rather than being careful to take it out. She didn't say much the whole time, and I tried my best to be friendly despite being uncomfortable. At the end, she offered me a shampoo that she "thinks I should try" (aka buy). First time trying out this salon and I was very impressed! My stylist Chelsey was very thorough and made sure we were both on the same page about my hair cut and color. She listened to me but also gave her professional opinion which I appreciated. She also took the time to actually style my hair after the cut instead of giving me the typical lobe blowout, which looks terrible on me. Very clean and beautiful salon in a great location as well. So good. I have been to Aluna twice now, and can't wait to go back! The first time I enjoyed a facial and PCA peel with Diego. He took the time to look at my skin and talk with me in order to customize for what I needed. He explained what I should do post peel and he spoke with such enthusiasm that I was eager to let him know how great it turned out. The second time I went and enjoyed a relaxing message with Jessica. She asked me if I had any areas of pain to focus on and did an amazing job relieving the tension between my shoulders. She was polite and considerate to make sure the level of pressure worked for me.
