I picked up a friend to go to lunch and he suggested we eat here. What a gem. I had rice and beans with fried sweet plantain and the beef dish (I had the lady serving pick my entree). We also split a chicken empanada. Yummy. The food is made in advance and sits in trays that you see. The food was fresh and delicious. So you will get your order quickly. Good Latin food conveniently located in the suburbs? Hmm. My family is Puerto Rican and I am very picky when it comes to our food. To my surprise, EVERYTHING was delicious. I ordered the white rice and red beans (habichuelas), roasted pork (pernil), sweet plantains (maduros), and chicken and beef empanadas (we call them patelillos). The portions are large enough for sharing and everything is reasonably priced. Since then, I have gone back several times and my experience has always been great! Only 2 months old and the word has spread about Amarilis Café. My wife and went for a visit today and were very pleased. Located in the heard of Lansdale's Main Street (PA 63) Amelias Café is the typical "Fondita de Pueblo". It is the type of place you will find anywhere in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic where you can eat 'til your heart's content. As you walk into Amelias you are transported to a different dimension of taste, sounds and smells. Behind the counter you will find plenty of smiles ready to help you decide among the many choices of meats, rices, yucca frita, tostones and maduros (fried ripe plantains). They are all ready to serve. You can go from selection to table in 5 minutes. Of course, you can also order from a selection of meals that must be prepared before serving. They do not serve alcohol and I didn't ask, but I think you can bring your own bottle or wine or preferred alcoholic beverage. I prefer to have an ice cold Presidente beer (Dominican Republic) with this type of food. You can pick up a cold six-pack at the Wegman's close by. Do not expect fancy table sets, furniture or silverware. Nor should you expect spectacular food presentations. The place is clean and the decoration simple. The food? good, plenty and nicely priced. On the menu you will find Patitas de Cerdo (Pig's feet), Chivo Guisado (Goat Stew), Mollejitas (Chicken Gizzards), Pernil (Baked Pork) and Bistec (steak?)... Chicharron de pollo y cerdo (fried chicken and pork rinds), white rice and pink/red beans, Sopa de Camarones (Shrimp Stew), Beef Empanadas, Rellenos de Papa, Alcapurrias,... Ivette ordered the fried chicken (chicharron de pollo) with tostones (fried plantains) and maduros (amarillos fritos or fried ripe plantain... they are very sweet!). I ordered the Bistec Encebollado (steak and onions) with Arroz con Moros (Mampostiao or rice and beans cooked together). Ivette said that the chicken brought back memories of the times when she spent summers visiting her family in the Dominican Republic. Her tostones were freshly made and cut a bit thin. The plaitain was a bit on the ripe side so they had a hint of sweetness that we are not used to having in tostones. The were great none the less. The maduros... my God! they were awesome! The Bistec was not exactly what I expected. I am used to a piece of thinly-cut steak that has been tenderized and cooked with onion. What I got looked more like peppered-steak. To my surprise, the flavor of the Bistec I know was there. My very brief disappointment was erased by the most wonderful flavor and texture. With my Bistec I had the Arroz con Moros. The combination was perfect! This is not a place for calorie counters. You can split any dish you order in half and still have plenty of food. I eat all of my Bistec but brought home whatever was left of everything else. Guess what I'll have for dinner... For drink Ivette had Passion Fruit juice (Parcha) and I had a Morir Sonyando (To Die Dreaming). It is prepared by mixing sweet orange juice and milk. It is - literally - to die for. $30 covered our meal and tip. Considering the ungodly amount of food they serve the price was right. Go, and be prepared for a tasteful experience. Well I was all excited to try this place out tonight! Unfortunately, as we parked and joyfully walked to the storefront, to our surprise the place was burnt down! Like completely charred and gutted I'm from jersey where we had tons of places like this so I was excited to have somewhere familiar to go to near our home. The funny part is, someone at a supermarket weeks ago was telling me about the fire and I had no clue what she was talking about and bid her a good day lol maybe i should have listened. Oh well.. Just got done eating takeout from here and all I can say is wow .. So happy that this place exists and sad that it took me too long to stumble upon it. Ordered the baked chicken and rice and beans as well as the fried pork chunks (wow). The chicken was cooked perfectly, moist and tender . Lots of flavor from whatever kind of dry rub they use . Skin is packed with flavor . The pork chunks and such a guilty pleasure. Tender, juicy and and the skin is crispy and balances the dish out . Also a must is to dip the chunks into the hot sauce to cut the fat level .. Awesome lol... Will def be back soon as possible .. We don't usually go to a restaurant that has no review on Yelp (learned it the hard way.) This restaurant recently opened, and we love different types of food, so we gave it a try. The decor did not change much from when it was "Not Just Sandwiches". It was now a counter-service instead of waitress-service, which was fine with us. The menu was a bit confusing. They showed platter on one side with 3 prices shown ($5, $7, $9), and a take-out menu on the other side. While we were trying to learn the menu, an owner (we assume he was the owner) came up and explained the different types of meat, which all looked delicious. There was braised chicken with bones, braised chicken without bones, braised ribs, braised beef, braised pork, fish stew and grilled chicken. They had 2 types of rice and a pasta in red sauce. They also had a soup stew (forgot the name). DH chose the braised chicken with bones, and I tried the grilled chicken. Our 6-yr old insisted on the pasta. They put a generous helping of rice with our meat of choice, plus we got a side salad with the platter. We asked them whether it was the $5, $7, or $9 platter, and they said it was a $5. That's quite a lot of food for $5! I also got a bowl of the soup stew. The food was great! Reminded us some of the dishes we had at various islands in the Caribbeans. The grilled chicken was done perfectly, even the skin was crispy that I ended up eating it too (I usually took out skin.) The soup stew was amazing, with generous amount of potatoes and ribs. DD loved her pasta, which I couldn't explain the sauce, but it was tasty. DH and I joked that there was no way our platters cost $5, so we mentally prepared to be sticker shock. When we went up to pay our bill, it was less than $20 for all that food we got! We told the owner that he should charge more, that we were ready to pay $9 for our platters. Plus the food was delicious. He said he wanted to generate more traffic, and selfishly, I was afraid the line would be out the door when people found out about this place! While we were there, they had a constant stream of takeout orders. I'd try that side of the menu next. read more

Stopped in for lunch not long after they opened. Not what we expected. Advertised as Spanish/American but it is better classified as Caribbean. Nothing Spanish about the food except some vague historical connection with the original settlers on the island of Hispaniola. We were looking for lunch but didn't see anything that we would call lunch fare. On the plus side, what we had was very good. Pricing seemed reasonable. There was no table service and the guy behind the counter had no idea how to serve customers. Overall experience was not conducive to making us want to return any time soon but we will try them again for dinner as I see the other reviews are more positive and I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt since we were there less than a month after they opened. read more

I am Latina so I decided to take my family out to lunch when we get here there is nobody there to greet you. We decided to just sit down and when finally saw a waitress we asked for a highchair she said they are infront of the bathroom. Food came out charred (ordered the Chicharon de pollo not burnt chicken). Out of our whole order the o my good thing was the Maduros and the lemonade. When I get up to pay she tells me one price then the other girl comes out and says it's a whole other price. Will never go here or recommend this place to anyone. I will drive all the way to Philadelphia to get real Spanish food or cook it myself!! read more

Don't feel like cooking but want some great homemade cooking for about what it would cost you to make it at home then this is your place. Small cute conversion from prior restaurant. Heavily hispanic clientele but that is just because they have quickly discovered this authentic gem and know good food and value. Very solid puerto rican/dominican fare. Rich stewed pork, beef and chicken, plantains, rice and beans, liver and onions. Empanadas were of the large deep fried variety, not my favorite as I prefer the baked ones. Very casual, byob, large portions and very tasty. This is a great addition to Lansdale. Will return soon to try some other offerings. read more
