I've been going to Amavi Salon for a couple of years now and have been very happy with their work. My last hair appt I made was for 11:00am. I ended up leaving at 11:45 due to not being seen yet. In speaking with the owner she stated she did that for me so I didn't have to deal with the 2 people already there. Then she tried to charge me a no show fee. They are good at hair but wait times are horrific. I have made appointments only to be waiting 30+ mins to even start to be seen. They also have a tendency to put you under the hair dryer and leave you there for ages. The last time I was there, I was under the dryer for almost 2 hrs before I had to finally ask if she could finish my hair and she came across kinda smug, as if I am asking for too much? It sucks because I was happy to find a salon that consistently does my hair well, but not worth the wait time if they are so nonchalant about their long wait times. read more

Since I recently moved to the Central Jersey area, I wanted to find a salon that concentrated on Natural Ethnic hair care. After probing hair salons online, I came across the Amavi Salon and based on earlier reviews on Yelp I decided to schedule an consult. Even though the salon is roughly an hour away from where I reside it didn't matter to me as long as I was getting the same service I was used to when I was back home in North Jersey. My consultation took some time as there was a wait, but it really didn't bother me as much to be quite frank because I myself was late getting there. (As I am not from South or Central Jersey so was def lost). Any hue, after my consult I decided to give it a go and get my hair styled because my hair was in need of an hairdo. I enjoyed the wash as it was very relaxing and I also liked the way my hair was styled by Jade considering that was my first time meeting with her. When it comes to my hair, I am very wary because it's my "hair" and sometimes when a person is introduced to someone new, you really don't know what to expect. However, I was quite satisfied with the end result. The reason why I gave my review 3 stars as oppose to 5 is because of the environment and/or presence inside of the salon. The staff and/or stylists that I've met were very congenial, however my 3 stars pertains to your "typical" black people salon. If a guest accompany you to a salon, have them sit down in the seating area, why are they in the back with you standing up while you are in the chair getting your hair fried, dyed, and laid to the side? Have a SEAT! I resent seeing this behavior in a salon. In addition, I understand they (they meaning the stylist) have male friends that come in and want to gossip, but how come that has to take place in an environment that is meant to be relaxing? Let them come back after, you have finished working on your client's.. Typical black salon.... Since it was my first time there, first impressions are everything. I disliked when my stylist would stop styling my hair because she thought showing a person her child on her mobile phone was far more important. I was kind of irked and put off, because that could have waited. Other than that, as stated prior, I was quite satisfied with my hair and the stylist that styled my hair was friendly. I've been a loyal customer at amavi salon for 5yrs and I can't say enough good things about the way the stylist and her sister take care of my hair. They are consistent & efficient with that. However, the wait time is HORRIBLE. Im talking 3, 4, and sometimes 5 hours from start to finished especially if you're behind a weave. Most of my appointments are scheduled for evenings( after work) so I'm very tired and don't want to sit in a salon for 3-5 hours. They definitely double book all the time which causes the wait time to be extremely long, I'm talking 30-45 mins before you even reach the shampoo bowl. The stylist definitely is good and she knows this to the point where she doesn't even care to apologize to her customers for the long wait. Her prices are high too compared to other salons but her hair care game is worth the extra bucks so I tolerated the wait. I reached my breaking point with this salon recently, my last visit was a wake up call after 5yrs smh that things just weren't going to change. Long wait no apology or appreciation for my business so I got up and left after 40 minute wait and no one said a word. I finally left and now I'm hopeful I will find another salon who not only does hair efficiently but values my time too. read more

The first time I got my hair done here it was great and I didn't have to wait long. The second time the same woman did my hair and it didn't look as good. Also, I waited almost 2.5 hours for a texturizer and simple wrap while Jade, the stylist, juggled 3 clients at once. (I hate when stylists overbook and you end up wanting to fall asleep under the dryer.) I feel like if she wasn't rushed she would have did a better job. A job I knew she was capable of because the first wrap I she did for my hair was flowing. I Usually take my niece here when she comes to town and I have always had a good experience, until today. Our appointment was at 9:15. We arrived early at about 9:05. Right at 9:15 Angie told us her first appointments were 30 minutes late and so she wanted us to leave and come back at 10:30. I was not happy but agreed and verified that she wouldn't be taking other clients who would cause us to be delayed even more. She assured me that wouldn't happen and that she would take us right away when we came back. At 10:20 she called me and said she wouldn't be able to take us till noon. We arrived promptly at noon, Angie called my niece back to the wash bowl at 12:10. How can an appointment that was booked 1 1/4 hour after opening be 3 hours late?!? The final result was extremely rushed. My niece left with dripping hair that had just a dusting of hair cut from it. It had been a year since she last got her hair cut so I know she needed more attention. I will not be returning and I am currently at another salon getting her hair fixed. Edit after getting nieces hair fixed - The person that fixed her hair said it was a mess! Even I, as a non professional, could see the longer hair sticking up every time the new stylist pulled up a section to cut! read more

I started coming to the Amavi Salon in 2012 and I must say that it was the best decision I have ever made!!! The atmosphere, the staff, and the quality of the work produced is simply the best!! When I go in for my appointment whether it's every two weeks or once a month....it feels like home. Everyone makes me feel comfortable and I feel extremely comfortable with all of them. My stylist and the owner Ngozi is the best, in comparison to my previous stylist, for all styles but my need was to strengthen and grow my natural hair. Ngozi gave my hair the time and attention it needed, she also gave me tips on what to do in between my appointments to strengthen my hair. I must say that my hair is the longest, fullest, and strongest it has ever been before!! Ngozi has styled me with a sew-in weave, up-dos, and many other styles to help get me out of my comfort zone. A friend of mine wanted to treat me so she bought a groupon for this salon. We arrived on time and we're seen for our consolation. We bth wanted partial highlights, a wash, cut, and deep condition. My stylist was Angie and she was horrible. I am natural and have been trying to grow my hair for over 6 year. I finally got some length and this woman goes and starts to brush my hair with those small combs with the pointy ends (don't know the name). She pulled and tore at my hair, it was so painful I almost cried. I watched as she tore clumps of my hair out because she didn't feel like taking the time to comb out my curls with a wide tooth comb. On top of the pain and torture, she took a total of 5 minutes to apply my highlights and then sends me off to sit under the dryer while she goes to talk about me and my hair with her fellow stylist without taking into consideration that I could see and hear them. After that she then keeps me waiting for my cut and style while she takes two other clients. We were rush, put aside, and made to wait while they chatted it up. Our appointment was for 2pm we didn't end up leaving until 8pm. By the end of the night I felt embarrassed, humiliated, and extremely angry. As if I was taken advantage of because with all the damage she was inflicting she knew I couldn't get up and leave with my hair half done. Now I have to repair the damage she has caused. I am never going back there. They have very bad business etiquette and frankly they aren't very nice people. read more

Beginning of the appointment started out fine until the stylist attempted to finish another customer and start me at the same time. Stylist proceeded to apply a relaxer to my hair only to let in sit in for 3 minutes then wash it out. Because of the short amount of time the relaxer was left in, it did not process my hair and the stylist used a hot comb almost through my entire head and flat ironed it as well. I can give one star because I had about 4 inches of my hair cut off when I was supposed to get a trim. Anyone who has natural hair knows it's a long hard road to grow/ maintain it! I went in and had a great consultation, however when I went in for the appointment the same stylist I spoke with wasn't there! This should've been a red flag to leave. The next woman sat down, told me I should forget what I previously setup and go with her recommendations. I did so trusting a professional...or so I thought. Everything is going well when she points out a short patch in the middle of my head. I SPECIFICALLY said she could cut that part but NOT anywhere else, it'd been 4 years of growth. Welp. She did. Took the scissors to my head. I ended up with "press n curl" I cried all the way home and the next day when the curls fell it was a BLUNT bowl cut. YES!!! I visited the salon a few days ago. I have dread locs and I've had them for quite some time even though I have no idea how to do hair whatsoever I do know how it's supposed to look when I comers I'm under the dryer. It was my 21st birthday and I wanted something special. I was apparently supposed to be booked with somebody else but ended up sitting in jades chair (fine by me as long as the end result was done) not only was I sitting in the wash area (hair wet and dripping) for an hour I was annoyed because jade tells me while I'm getting my hair done that when she first started doing hair she didn't like touching dread locs. (Why did you become a natural hair stylist?) and now she's grown to be OK with it. I laughed it off but I just think that professionally you shouldn't tell a first time client this. Not only that but I had them put it in curls. My party was the next day... I woke up after wrapping my hair just like Alex showed me. It was as straight as a flattened cardboard box!!!! I was shocked I had to go out and buy rollers and mousse and still curl it myself. Forward to 3 days later my hair starts unraveling!!!! My roots are as frizzy as ever and it's just ridiculous!!! $200 for 7 hours?? I called them they told me jade isn't there and that she'll be back on Wednesday. I so wish the review could be more positive but I will post with no intention to harm but hopefully assist in some much needed improvement. 1. If you are not client receiving services by all means have a seat! ( it is most unsettling to have people in your space when the stylist should be focused on the task at hand, your hair). 2.This is HUGE, the stylist should be familiar with their clients profile, case in point, I still carry the scars on my face from being badly burned all because of the stylist's ineptness. She did not bother to read my profile that stated mild relaxer because I burn quickly. I never received an apology an offer of a free or discounted service and I think that being knowledgeable of your clients needs and any cautions would come under heading of Beauty School 101 First Do No Harm. 3.Oh and yes the cackling, I guess that would be a good way to describe it, plain and simple Knock It Off, if professional is the road you want to be on that needs to cease. I gotta be honest it kind of made wonder if they weren't laughing at me or another client. 3. Groupons make sure read them carefully when booking your appointment. 4.With all this being said everyone deserves a second chance. The two owners were lovely ladies and hopefully they will comprehend the need for improvement and make the necessary changes to maintain a profitable business. People work hard for their money and if they don't feel they're getting any Bang for their Buck: Quiet, Clean, Knowledgeable, Timely and most important Professional they will simply go elsewhere. This is an update. Originally gave 5 stars! In mid 2013. At this point I would say stay away. It's now March 2015 Good luck if you decide to go and let them touch your hair. For the first year everything was fine. However, this past December after making an appointment for a rather important family event (once in a lifetime) I arrived on time only to find someone else being worked on during my slot in my stylist's chair AND my stylist was not even there. The person made it clear they didn't have an appointment, but was going out of town, and I can only guess was more of a regular than me. I was going every 4-8 weeks. (There's always confusion and bickering and sometimes you just want to get your hair done). Anyway, there I sat...When the stylist did arrive 1/2 hour late she chose to continue working on the other person over me. What was I going to do? Leave?..I should have. I'd still have my hair if I did! And then she rushed through my hair appointment perm and all! Didn't even discount for jamming me. There's also no consistent pricing for the same services. It was always going UP! Giving the benefit , I was stupid enough to go back 2 weeks later. It was the holiday season. I paid for my stupidity and angst over trying to find another place to go. My color was over processed. My hair fried. You could smell it! And after a consult at another salon I find out they were coloring and perming too close together. I went from texturizer to full straight and I was concerned, but I trusted. This had been done consistently. It finally caught up with my hair! Now I will just stay natural. They don't have cards on clients that they check. There's nothing on color mix. Don't know what kind of products they use and on and on. So, I'm not bald, But came pretty darn close. It's going to be at least another year before I get something back to really work with.. I'm too am embarrassed, because I trusted them. I really did! If they're so worried about losing clients which you hear all the time while being worked on -- pay attention to what your're doing to our hair! They just don't care anymore. I'm in tears every day. The salon is dusty and dirty -- gross. At one point, I actually saw bugs crawling across the floor! I don't know what happened, buyer beware at this point. For the service they give, they're pricey. If I wanted my hair to break off as it did, I should have just gone to a beauty supply and tried my own luck. They're supposed to be the licensed professionals. Hah! I'm at Rizzieri Moorestown now. I recently went natural and got my hair highlighted in the top. I wanted to get the entire head highlighted and wanted it tapered a bit on the sides. I was recommended to amavi and was told to let the owner do my hair. I needed my hair done before an event so I called amavi but ngozi the owner did not have availability. I was given Angie..... The worse! She seemed like a nice person although she did too much talking and cackling for my liking but most importantly she did a terrible job on my hair. I told her I wanted the highlights throughout my hair.. She instead did chunks in the back and on the sides. She used the foil instead of pulling it through the cap. I asked about not using the cap while she was doing my hair and her response was that only white people use caps! Okay..... I should have left right then because I knew that made no sense at all. She cut my hair so unevenly in the back! One side was ,5 to 6 inches shorter than the other side!!!! Just awful! I called back a couple of days later to comp!ain to the owner ngozi. I left a message she called back and I missed her call. I called and left another message. Ngozi didn't return the second call. I was telling the friend that recommended me and she said she had told me NOT to let Angie do my hair.
