Amba was a little off off 55 but o simply didn't want some of the more traditional fast casual spots. So we selected Amba. We pulled up, and there was one table of customers. The atmosphere Ilic's clean but had a hamburger joint feel to it. I started to question if this was the right choice. If you stop reading before what I have to say below, trust me you'll love this place. We walked up to the digital menu which has a feel of a franchise even through the rest of the restaurant feels like an independent mom/pop joint. So I order a bowl- rice, greens, falafel, cucumber/tomato mix, picked onions, olives, traditional. Hummus and feta. Then we get to the sauce... I'm simply overwhelmed with all the choices. The nice man behind the counter gave me a little dollop of 5-6 sauces and they were all amazing... ! You can't go wrong with any of them. I went with The Amba sauce but really they all were so flavorful! My bowl was huge! More than I could eat in one sitting (similar to the quantity of a chipotle bowl which I also can never finish). The falafel!!! Oh my! Probably one of the most flavorful falafel that I've ever had. Yum! Yum. Yum! My husband had the chicken shawarma ... he said his was awesome, I'm pretty sure awesome chicken shawarma was no where as good as my falafel. I'm not a soda drinker, but if I was, I'd be super excited about their no HFCS soda. All flavors are made with real cane sugar! I was super happy with yelp's suggestion. The service is okay, there's a tall gentleman who works there that's kind & nicer than the shorter one, it was my first time and I said 1 bowl and he gave me two and charged me two, he also seemed to have an attitude that day & be a little impatient as I was choosing my options. Better than expected fast casual Middle Eastern restaurant in Joliet. It happens to be another one of those build as you go along the counter places. Amba is a place to get tasty food in a hurry. Only thing is it may be long calling on you to make an order. The lines usually move quick though. A pretty easy ordering process many other places have copied from a chain that happens to be everywhere. It's a series of steps. The first is to choose a bowl, pita, or wrap. A few reasons to make the right choice. You can fit more in some things and get better values. It's about $12 for bowls. We got these because more fit in these compared to pitas and wraps. After this, choose a base. There's bulgur and tomato pilaf, mixed greens, or saffron and turmeric basmati rice. After this choose a sauce like baba ghannouch or hummus. They also have a few ones that are seasonal. After this choose a protein. There's chicken, falafel, gyro meat and other things. Each of ours certainly was filling. They have plenty of sides we couldn't get, but maybe the next time we'll explore more stuff. For sure we could go here again. It's located on Route 59 close to Theodore Street. I saw another review that the portions were huge...I disagree. My hubby's gyros had very little meat. I got a bowl and asked if I could get half and half gyros and falafel. I was told bluntly NO. I chose tomato bulgar as my base. He scooped it in and left it on the counter to do something else. When he came back he continued filling the bowl sparsely and no smile whatsoever. I should have asked for new tomato bulgar, because it was ice cold . Gyros meat was good. Wish there was more in the bowl. Also wish they were friendlier. It was generally tasty though. read more

I got the red pepper hummus and the spicy feta hummus, atop Chicken Swarma, cucumber & tomato, chick peas, and basamati rice. I really liked the spicey feta hummus. The beverage selection was different, Jones Sugar Cane sodas and a ginger lemonade. My partner loved the lemonade, for me the Root Beer was the bomb. This is a fast food joint so i wasn't expecting anything fancy inside, but they do have pleanty of tables, and played music, but not loud. I'm glad I gave this a chance! Shorewood/Joliet need more healthy lunch choices like this. A lot of people go for the chicken Shawarma, but I think the chicken Tawook is better. They have great toppings too. I love their spicy feta hummus and I always get cucumbers and Kalamata olives. If you go, you should definitely get a combo because the Greek fries are so flavorful and I love the fresh mint lemonade, it reminds me of a healthier lemon shake-up. I stopped in for lunch today (1/14/22) before noon. It was my 1st time. The lady that waited on me had a different personality (dry sarcasm maybe?) but we got there. A man from the back smiled & I waved. I really wish more people in the service industry could be like him. Anyway, I suggest you review the menu before going in OR place an online order for pickup. Think Subway except you get there and want to try everything. The cost is extremely reasonably for the amount of food you receive. Everything minus the pita bread was DELICIOUS! Been about 6 times now, my wife and I love this place! I've had most of what's on the menu and nothing has disappointed me. I used to go to this style of restaurant for healthier eating but the fries at amba are some of the best I've ever had, so that's a me problem that I can't say no to. Just ordered from Amba for the first time through Grub Hub. Food was absolutely delicious. Great portion sizes and quality. Highly recommend the chicken shawarma and also the beef shawarma bowls. The fries were also very good. The only downside is that I ordered the Greek fries and the Phoenician Fries but they forgot the tzatziki and the toom sauces that come with them.
