The food is good. This is more for people who like loud and more of a party scene. The bar was full of college students drinking.. So I didn't care for that to much. . When we were in a couple of years ago, the jukebox was very loud. Our daughter can't handle loud noises. They were very nice and turned it down so it wouldn't hurt her ears. I grew up eating the pizza here. I have ALWAYS recommended this place to everyone that comes up to visit or asks where to get the best pizza...NO MORE will I do this. Last night we again ordered for takeout. When my hubby got it home I was just shocked. I asked for light sauce..it was flooded with sauce again, as it happened last time we ordered but hey...everyone has a bad night so we let it pass. But this time also, the crust was different. Ingredients are not fresh. The chicken and the feta in my salad tasted like cardboard. It was supposed to be grilled chicken but it was tiny strips that had been soaked in oil. Its ok, the section for vegetarians is very few, you got your salads and a pizza and a sandwich but other then that there is not much. They did not seem willing to change things to help they mostly would point out to you the things that they had for vegetarians. This place is the biggest rip off I've ever been to. I ordered a $10 pasta dinner, mind you this was my first time there so I did not know what to expect. Half an hour later, when I was served, I was given 3 raviolis on a bread plate with the world's tiniest piece of half burned garlic bread that was clearly the end of the loaf and had the consistency of a rock. I am pregnant and very hungry, and needless to say I was more than a little upset. On top of this, I read in the paper here in town not but 6 months ago, they had an E-Coli break out that left half their employees ill, including one employee's 2 year old son. Ambassador came highly recommended from some former Houghton residents I know. I'm not sure if they've changed ownership or just had an off day, but I was not impressed. We had a large group, and service was friendly but slow and inattentive. We had to flag down the waitress on a few occasions to get refills. Our food came out pretty fast, and I was able to try 3 pizzas. The tostada pizza was recommended but disappointing. The refried beans were dry and killed the whole pizza. The Greek was interesting and flavorful, although kalamata olives would have been better than black and green. My favorite was our custom which had pepperoni, sausage, and green peppers with a traditional tomato sauce. It was good, but nothing made it stand out as an excellent pizza. On all the pizzas, the crust needed more flavor. Ambassador was decent as a college town pizza joint, but overall I wasn't impressed. They need to step up their service and their food quality. They could also use some more beers on tap. read more

This is a review for dinner on non-pizza items. Was here on a recent summer Wed evening early - it gets crowded by 6 pm. We were tourists and had never been here - was hoping the Keweenauw Brewing had been a pub that served food, but alas. The decor, tables, chairs scream low budget here. We started with the chicken wings and garlic toast - fine, nothing special. THen I had their pasta 'special' - spaghetti with olive oil, fresh tomato and garlic topped with salmon filet. This was decent and the the fish was cooked nicely. My husband had the Mediterrean chicken sandwich. It comes with NOTHING. And we saw no sides to order (no fries or anything). So a BIG DING on this aspect of this restaurant. I really would not recommend it to anyone coming from out of town. But then again as I said we did not eat their pizza. read more

The food was mediocre, the atmosphere was forced and the employees table waiting was found wanting. Would I ever go back? NO. Suggest anyone to spend their time and money here? NEVER. This is 100% true. I took my fiancee' and daughter here on a Saturday. We sat in the back with a view of the kitchen. We ordered our pizza and when it was delivered to our table it didn't look like what we had ordered. I picked a topping off the pie and ate it. It tasted like bacon (which was not one of OUR toppings) so I picked another piece off. My fiancee' took a piece off the pie and put it on her plate. Just then the server returned and informed us she gave us the wrong pie. This is where it gets interesting. The server took the piece off my fiancée's plate and put it back from where she took the piece off, picked up the pie and walked back to the kitchen. She put the pie on the shelf, the cook put the cheese back on the pie and she immediately walked the same pie out and delivered it to the table right next to us. The pizza never never left my sight the whole time. When I informed the manager he said "What do you want me to do about it?" WOW. He then started yelling at us like it was our fault saying "Look how busy we are what do you expect." Never have I met such an unprofessional "manager" in my life. To make a long story short the Health Department was informed and they will be visiting the Ambassador. I ordered the chef salad and was very happy with my selection. There were plenty of good ingredients in the salad and it came with more than enough dressing on the side. My only complaint is that the iceberg lettuce pieces were gigantic, and I had to spend some time cutting them down to an edible size. I would definitely dine here again though. read more

I have been to Houghton twice and have been to The Ambassador 3 times! Love it! Love the ambiance, views if you are near the window, hot buttered rum in the winter, local brew and LOBSTER PIZZA! Absolutely love this place!!! A must do when I visit the area. The tostada pizza with an extra side of the hot sauce and 2 of their fishbowl mixed drinks makes for a perfect night. Ask the waiter to sit by the window so you can see Portage canal while you eat. Best for groups!!! The fishbowls aren't weak by any means!!! My favorite is the Scorpion!! Perfect ambiance. On weekends, it can get quite loud and there's a lot of echoing. I wish we had one by me!! My grandmother used to come here when she was in her 20's. Beautiful wall murals and ceiling. For years, the Ambassador was my favorite restaurant in the entire world, but in more recent years, the quality of the pizza has severely diminished. The taste is completely different than what it used to be, although the servers swear nothing has changed. Another great feature was that the owner always used to ask how the meal was, and I'd always said it was my favorite. Now, however, should someone ask, I can honestly say it isn't great. It's not terrible, but not that good either. What happened? I don't understand why a restaurant that's been around for 50 years and done a wonderful business would go and change the recipe so much. Go for the atmosphere and pizza. This is an old Bosch Beer bar (much like the old Schlitz company bars in Chicago) with the original ornate wood bar, mural, and wood booths. You won't get fine dining here, but you'll have a good time and cool stuff to look at. Try the fancy Italian sodas if you're not up for an alcoholic drink. Oh yeah, the pizza's not bad either. My boyfriend and I stopped in here after reading positive reviews. Too bad for us that it must only be the pizza that people like because their subs are disgusting! I order a ruben and you could tell the meat had been frozen and it was still only room temp. when I got the sub, the meat was rubbery, their "seasoned" kraut is nothing more than canned garbage with an overkill of extra vinegar and pepper. The cheese on my sub was NOT some fancy mild cheddar, it was crappy soft overly processed junk! Also, who serves a ruben on white bread? There was no thousand island dressing or anything besides rubber cheese, plastic meat, mushy kraut, and SERIOUSLY soggy white bread. That wasn't even the worst part; my boyfriend ordered their lasagna, that was the worst mistake! When you charge 10$ for a small plate you expect there to be some flavor. What he was served was a mushy concoction of horrible. The cheese was liquid and mixed with straight up grease! You could actually see pools of grease in his food. I know frozen lasagna when I taste it and this is exactly what the deal was, it turned it into a flavorless mush. The only good thing about his meal was the "garlic bread" that was more of a buttered toast, no garlic, not even a hint. Save your money and just get some fast food. Microwave meals would have been a better choice. read more
