I wanted to preface by saying (and you can view my profile for the truth in this) I never write reviews, and if I do, they are good. I am the type that will tip 20%+ even when service isn't great. I was in the service industry for some time and am very (maybe too) understanding. I am also not the type of person who has ever really "cared" about their hair too much, to the extent that i would never get upset with new styles, drastic haircuts, and things I didnt necessarily like. I always knew it would grow out. That said, I have very wavy/in some places curly and frizzy hair. I have been getting my hair chemically straightend for close to 15 years. Have used various types and have all worked great. I'm a pro, at this point. So I had Ambrosia do Bioionics, I dont know, maybe about 5 years, ago, and they did an amazing job. However, that stylist left, but I trusted the salon given my past experience and made an appointment. It turns out, the "guru" off the salon had just found out she was pregnant, so I had someone that was a replacement. I was a little hesitant, but said OK. They also said there was a new product they were using for the salon called Silis and that I would love it. Not really thinking too much about it, I went for the appointment and things seemed ok. I can tell you, given my experience with various straightening system, the silis in terms of aesthetics from the start is just- a bit bizarre. Instead of washing out, it leaves this sort of clumpy/sticky substance in during the setting period (for a few days). It never felt entirely straight from the get go but i thought once I wash it out, it should be fine. After the setting period was over, I was so excited to see my hair. I let it air dry on my way to work. doing a quick cursory look in the mirror in my car, i watched as the strands that were drying were literally sizzling up as I was watching. I starting to panic. I was working in Waltham at the time and couldnt do much in my commute but called the salon. they werent open on Monday and no one got back to me, so I did as an emergency see someone in waltham who did an intense conditioning therapy mask on my hair. I was going to Puerto Rico in a couple of days and concerned. I also noticed that not only was my hair fried in many places (a look like hair does when it meets a flame), but that it was also falling out. Alot, in clumps. I called Ambrosia and the response given the situation wasn't great and they didn't really make much of an effort to see me (hours are limited, couldnt accommodate after work and I was in Waltham). I had let them know what happened and felt like I got the third degree. It was just strange given the situation. When I went in there, it was obvious to both the stylist and another girl working there that for whatever reason, it was over process (obviously). There was some comment about perhaps me moving or something and that is why (first off, if the product is that sensitive, come on, second, I've had this done like 10+ times, its not my first rodeo). My stylist said that I was good and didn't move. I am writing as it is almost a year and a half later. I my hair is still to this day, incredibly damaged. It continues to fall out, and is uneven around my head where the clumps of hair fell out/broke. the new growth, thank goodness, is healthy (see pictures- also note that the new growth had a recent straightening treatment done and as usual, came out perfect) but the remnants of the burn to my hair is still there and will be for likely another 1-2 or so years until it grows out completely. It is obvious that there is severe damage to my hair, and I haven't been able to do much since. It was either let it grow and look shaggy and dead for a LOOOOONG time, or cut it almost to a wiffle. In the pictures, you can see the top, which is just one clump (for a while it stuck straight up while it was growing out- thank goodness its grown some and can [almost] pass for layers, as well as the bottom, where that whole part under my hair broke off. I am really disappointed, but mostly in the way it was handled. They would not refund my money. They let me come in a for a "free" keratin treatment and product (note- there wasn't enough for what I needed so ended up spending a good deal more, on top of what I had already spent on product before I got there and in Puerto Rico in a desperate attempt to save as much of my hair as I could. I think the way it could have been handled could have gone a long way. I ended up spending HUNDREDS more after, with hair ruined for at least 3 years. That is messed up. I also feel bad because the stylist is a doll; i know we are all human and of course i make mistakes in my job. It was up to the salon- the owners- to do the right thing and at least refund part of the $400 I spent and follow up to see how i was doing. Anyway, now just a PSA more than anything. Just be careful who you entrust your hair to. :( read more

Best hair dresser is Jamie! Always gives an excellent hair cut. The salon is nicely decorated and comfortable with snacks and beverages while waiting. Though you never wait long. They also have a fabulous spa with facials and massages. Theresa is wonderful and provides personalized service. A great place to escape the work world and be pampered. read more

Been going here for years, always get the same thing done EVERYTIME for usually around the same amount of money. Went there today, got the same thing done as I always do, and left there with a bill of almost $200. About $80 more than I've always paid. Granted, I saw another stylist because mine wasn't available, I asked her to do the exact same thing I've always had done. Apparently different stylists cost more.. Guess I'll be waiting months until my stylist comes back. Highly disappointed because I've always loved this place and all of the workers, referred tons of people here. It's a huge let down, especially when they didn't even seem the least bit concerned when I almost fell on my ass hearing how much money they wanted, and then dared to ask me if I'd like to schedule my next appointment. New management or just money hungry? Who knows.. read more

I had my first appointment at Ambrosia with Erin Gillis and can I tell you that she is amazing!!! We talked about the color and hairstyle I wanted at the start of our appointment and she was on the same page as me from the start. Erin did an amazing job with my color and with my cut. I had her cut off quite a few inches and do a total revamp on my style and it's gorgeous! I'll definitely be back to see Erin. read more

Had a very positive experience at this salon today. Tried it out with a Groupon. Caitlin cut and colored my hair. She did a fabulous job! She was so personable, pleasant and helpful! She paid close attention to what I had requested and when asked, gave her opinion about color and cut. She was very knowledgeable about different products and was honest about what would work for my hair. I appreciated the feedback that she gave me. I hate to get my hair done because it takes such a long time, but Caitlin made the time fly by. She's awesome! read more

I only recently learned about this salon after buying a Groupon. I was able to book an appointment within 24 hours with one of the two stylists that the Groupon was for. I checked in and was happy to be offered coffee but my stylist was immediately ready for me. Caitlin was so kind, informative, and invested in a simple cut that was about to happen. Her enthusiasm was so nice! Her attention to detail and patience to listen to what I needed done was comforting. I never book my next appointment usually, but I did this time because I was so impressed with Caitlin's work. I look forward to going back for hair needs as well as a massage! read more

I have been searching for a hairdresser.......forever! The search has covered the south shore and Newbury St. FINALLY I FOUND ASHLEY! This was my third appointment with her....often the one where they stop paying attention.....,and again she nailed it! I love my haircut when I leave, and the last two I still loved when I went for my next cut 6 weeks later. My hair is thick ,and curly when not blown out. It's hard to express in words how thrilled I am. Ashley is confident, patient, and extremely skilled. The salon is very nice, but the hairdresser is what makes the place outstanding! read more

I got the groupon for the cut, condition, and blow dry, and from the second they knew I had a groupon I was treated poorly. The receptionist Donna, first told me it was only available for new clients. When I originally scheduled the appointment, the receptionist I spoke with over the phone knew I was not a new client and did not mention any issue. After feeling like I was not welcomed right off the bat, I double checked the groupon while waiting for my hairdresser and it says "not valid for customers active within the last 6 months". I don't get my hair done often, so I knew it was at least 6 months since I've last been there--which turns out I was right. Donna just said, yes you're right with no apology. So now I feel uncomfortable as my hairdresser Ashley comes to greet me, and by greet I mean "Lauren, I'm ready for you"...and that was pretty much the extent of our conversation the entire time. I had to ask her what her name was and attempted conversation once or twice while she was washing my hair, but eventually just gave up. She did a good job cutting my hair, but then she turned the hair dryer on and it was rattling, smoking, and burning my scalp. The finish product wasn't that bad, but I get my hair cut maybe twice/yr and look forward to the whole experience. I am well aware I paid less because it was a groupon, but the stylist still works on tips and could have gained a new client out of me if she tried.
