I come to this theater for the convenient location and because I have the monthly pass from AMC. But I am starting to go to one further from home since this one is not very well kept, feels humid and stuffy, the restrooms are usually a mess as well as the snack and condiment area and the temperature is too warm inside the screening rooms. They only have the blockbuster movies, so if you're looking for something more independent go somewhere else. read more

The theatre has had some positive upgrades like assigned seating and improved look along with a variety of items to choose from at the concession stand. I gave it 3 stars because the line at the concession stand was so long and they only had one person working the register.. it's quite frustrating since everyone is here to watch a movie at a specific time. They should schedule staff according to the movies that are scheduled. Also perhaps keeping the new and improved look a little cleaner. read more

I'm not sure what happened to this theater but I've been coming here my whole life. I went last night to see Mario brothers and the concession stand was completely dark, no lights on, one little candy stand with some old candy. 3 hot dogs that were cold and machine was off but I still took my chance and ordered my popcorn. It was stale and cold. Very disappointing. This is NOT the theater I've been too growing up. If it's closing down, just close if NOT it needs a huge makeover. Not the best AMC movie theatre but what do you except based on the location, customers and the staff! This place gets 2 stars for effort, they tried to improve the neighborhood but opening up a local movie theatre however the staff and the service is horrible! I've probably been to this theatre less than 5 times since it opened a few years ago and I find it's not kept clean unlike other AMC locations. There is always a line at the ticket counters and concession stands no matter what day and time you go and no matter how many staff members are behind the registers. Customers....smh 10x on this one. Now I understand going to the movies can be pricey! However if you're going to bring outside food into the theatre, the least you can do is clean up after yourself! read more

I use to work out in the gym right near here in Harlem World at NYSC. I would occasionally come here for a flick. I have had no problem with the concession stands or anything but I have seen some customer really argue with the staff though. Do I plan to visit here regularly- No. Would I ever come back here again one day? YESSIR. When that day will come, I don't know. I go to so many random places around manhattan an event coming up may take me to this area again. I do generally like most AMC theaters here in New York. I have to get the most use out of this STUBS card that I have. read more

This theater is very dirty, popcorn all over the ground, candy wrappers everywhere. The staff was just standing around goofing off while there was a long line waiting to be served at the food court. Terrible service. Magic Johnson would not be pleased. I'd rather take a train to another AMC than return to this one. The photo shows all the filth on the ground in front of the food stand. A few days ago, I went here to see Spiderman Far From Home (I highly recommend it). I had a good experience here. The theater was reasonably clean and tickets were cheap by NYC standards. The security guards made sure that no one acted rowdy in the theater. Officially, no outside food is allowed but I brought a Subway footlong turkey sub into the theater and I wasn't stopped. My only complaint was that it was July and the AC was on full blast. It was 85 degrees outside and 45 degrees in the theater. Keep this in mind if you're dressed for hot weather during the summer. read more

Lord if management only knew how this place isn't being up kept. Besides the condiment area and soda machine was so dirty and nasty at 1:00 pm in the afternoon. The place had a weird smell that popcorn couldn't even cover up. Once we walked into theatre 4. The smell seemed even worst . The floors were slippery and the chairs had old food on the seats.... staff wasn't friendly. This is so sad because the only movie theatre in Harlem and it's terrible. read more

This theater floats between 2 and 3 stars for me. There have been plenty of times I've been to this theater and left angry. People LOVE to have their own commentary during movies here-its out of control really. However, the commentary the last time I was there (during Planet of the Apes) was absolutely hilarious and made me enjoy the movie more. Nevertheless, if you don't want talking go during an off hour or another theater. Its not the cleanest, it can be pretty crowded, and pretty loud. Several years ago I posted a one star review. Not much has changed, and some things have gotten even worse. I'll provide the changes, share my recent experience, and finally pieces of my original post. Changes: -The self-serve kiosks are now upstairs in the main theatre lobby -AMC stubs line on the first floor have been moved by the wall adjacent to the stairs -The ticket taker has moved from the top of the stairs BACK to where they used to be by the bathrooms and concessions (at least for my most recent visit): PRO-TIP: Consider getting AMC Stubs, if for nothing else you can buy your ticket online in advance and select your seat. It's worth the $15 a year, plus you get other benefits. Recent experience: After buying my tix for a matinee showing of Proud Mary, I headed to the theater. Skipping the first floor lobby line I headed to the upper level lobby (Oh, BTW, today the escalator from level one to level two was NOT working - so I was lazy and took the elevator (which was working)). This theater doesn't have dine-in (or the nice lazy-boy type seating), so I headed to concessions to get popcorn. Popcorn. That move staple. The thing that's pretty hard to get wrong. That Magic Johnson's Theater got WRONG. How? Well first and foremost, concessions and service SUCKED. Let me explain - since I'm a stubs member, I went to stand in the AMC Stubs line. This line is supposed to be a priority line and concessions should call folks from that line before the standard line (it's a 'paid' benefit of 'buying' AMC stubs membership). While in the AMC Stubs line there are two cash registers open (out of like 10 I think). Come to think of it, I don't EVER recall a scenario when ALL of the cash registers were manned. One cash register was calling folks standing on the regular line, which left one cashier to call folks on the Stubs line. But wait, there were two people (sometimes even three people) at the cash register calling folks on the Stubs line - and they went twice as slow as the single guy on the cash register calling folks on the regular line. I thought that all cashiers should call people on the Stubs line until it was empty (hey - that might be great incentive for regular people to consider purchasing AMC Stubs). So after waiting almost 10 minutes on the Stubs member line, I noticed someone bringing popcorn out to refill the concession's supply. Now maaaybe it was freshly popped that morning, but the person bringing it out brought it out in a HUGE tupperware looking like bin. It didn't seem fresh. It didn't smell fresh. Doesn't matter. My cashier went to the OTHER concession supply (which was running pretty low) to get my popcorn. Oh, maybe she was doing me a solid. Maybe the recently delivered popcorn needed to warm up in the concession supply. Maybe the popcorn I was getting was already warm (and perhaps fresher than the recently delivered popcorn?). Nope. Room temperature popcorn is what I got. No better (or worse) than the kind you get at the grocery store. For $2.99. Except this popcorn was $7.89. Barely edible since it wasn't warm, it wasn't fresh, and it wasn't buttery. So I went to the butter machine (which we all know is hydrogenated oil with some flavoring to taste like butter). I thought it would add some warmth and buttery flavor. It wasn't warm. And since it wasn't warm, it didn't taste buttery. It tasted like I poured vegetable oil on my popcorn. So I barely ate any of it. Why didn't I go to customer service to complain and possibly get my money back? Because by that time the movie was about to start. And when I looked over at the Customer Service area - surprise, surprise, nobody was there. So why am I going to wait at a counter when nobody is there? At least the movie was decent. From original post in 2014: This is my local theatre - closest to my house. The service is not very good. Long concession lines, not the cleanest environment in the theatre. Most importantly, the service can be so much better. Service makes the experience, and the folks at Magic Johnson don't seem particularly thrilled that you've chosen to come spend your money and watch a movie here. But its the closest one. So I'll be back. Only because its the closest to my house. Improve service so I'll have more reasons to come. Conclusion: Years have passed. We have a new president (among other things). Yet the service at Magic Johnson's has not improved. PRO-TIP: smuggle in your food goods via backpack (including popcorn). I'll be back - only when I'm lazy and don't feel like venturing forth. This place was pretty terrible. Location was great 1.5 blocks from the subway. But, the theatre smelled like a piss waterfall. Multiple people around us who we did not know said the same thing too. I wouldnt really come back here unless I reallllly needed to, which i doubt would happen. read more

Weekend is very busy. Seats are pretty dirty and it's smells bad. It's pretty slow to get ticket and food court takes long time.

The only good thing about this theatre is that it has a Dolby screen - even if there is a big dent in it. If this wasn't the nearest cinema to my house, I wouldn't go out of the way to come here. It's a real shame, because the film programming here is really solid, and the space could really be inviting and cool. Instead it is just always dirty and sticky. Half of the staff members will be helpful or kind if you need to engage with them about an issue like the AMC app not working, or the screen ratio being off, but really that kind of stuff is out of their control anyway. People have written this before, but the lack of movie etiquette with the patrons in this cinema is WILD. I have never sat through so many films with people talking and texting on their phones, brightness up playing candy crush all throughout an opening weekend film at a $20+ ticket at Dolby. read more

Went to Magic Johnson because it was the closest and tickets were pretty limited but I don't think if given the choice I would go there again. The popcorn was stale to the point my friend said they had to grind their teeth and the soda machines weren't working properly. The staff was nice and helpful. My complaint is that I sent $26 on popcorn and two soda and you know that from the start but the bare minimum is that you have fresh popcorn that's warm and not cold, stale and probably old. I couldn't ask for a new one because it was the same popcorn from a glass case, possibly made in bulk or bought days before. So disappointed. read more

I finally did it. After 2+ years of living virtually around the corner from this place, last night my family confirmed that the movie we wanted to see, The Visit, was starting in exactly in 20 minutes at this theater and it was 5 minutes away SO LET'S GO. We were greeted by 2 long lines, one for the ONE ticket teller out of 5 that was open, and ONE for the one automated kiosk that was working out of 3. Surprisingly, this was the most painful part and it didn't even last that long. Despite our being right on time, we easily found seats, dashed to the concession stand where the line moved quickly, and whaddya know, the popcorn wasn't burned and the customer service ("Would you like anything else with that" basically) was fine. Expect standard NY inflated movie theater prices; $13 for a large popcorn and soda combo still hurts. My mom asked for a box so we could spread out the butter distribution and got it in seconds. In the theater, I had no complaints about cleanliness, only one person below us whipped out their cellphone to check something out in the middle of the movie, and there was nobody there that night who felt the need to have a monologue with the big screen or add their own personal soundtrack. There were also no babies. We were all strangely in sync, laughing together at the appropriate times, muttering to our comrades at all the freakish points, but never taking it overboard past the intended reaction time. This used to be my local movie theater so I definitely have a soft spot for it but it's not anything special except for when it hosts special screenings and film festivals. Their chicken tenders are decent if you're starving and short on time but it's very close to many good restaurants if you have enough time to enjoy a sit-down meal. This is the dirtiest theater I've been out to and it's rather shocking that no one cleaned the aisles or cup holders between showings. I've given this place a try too many times. I recently saw the movie Blindspotting at this location after having dinner in the area. It is great to have a multiplex in Harlem but I was sad to see AMC has neglected this theater and the local community. The prices were good ($13) and less than the AMC at Lincoln Center. It was nice to see murals and artwork to celebrate black history and Magic Johnson. The staff were nice when I purchased my tickets. The theater itself was run-down and showed a lack of investment in cleanliness and upgrades. The seats in the theater were smelly and unclean, old, and uncomfortable. The concessions area was tired and could use an upgrade. I love to have a theater within walking distance but was disappointed. AMC - I know you can do better. read more

Jesus where do I start? Well first I'll start by asking Magic Johnson how?!? How does he have his name attached to such an awful business.. We came here on a Saturday evening and the ticket line was out the door. If you're coming to this awful place then please buy your tickets on Fandango. This theater has assigned seating which is new to me as I only thought they did that at dine in theaters. Upon entry of the theater it smelled like old musty socks. I've sat on metal folding chairs more comfortable than the seats in this theater. When was the last time they were replaced?!?!! The icing on the cake from this wonderful experience was the bathroom trip. The bathroom in that theater was thee WORST I've ever been in, in my 30 years walking this earth. I'm still having nightmares about the things I saw in that bathroom. Please do not come here. We need to hold these businesses accountable. The google reviews are very accurate... I went tonight to see "IT" with my sister.. 8:30pm showing. It was dirty and trash around randomly, I was surprised seeing that its a Magic Johnson Theatre. Long line at concessions, hella people standing around doing nothing. I guess when you don't make a lot of money, that's what you do? *shrugs* The fake buff security like we were at an "upscale" NY club was laughable. The theatre seats are uncomfortable and super close together, they didn't have on any A/C I was baking the whole movie. I only really ever go to the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 because it's so convenient to me. When you live in the Bronx and you want to catch a movie at an AMC Theater but you don't want to go all the way downtown, this is your best bet. Is it fancy? No. Is it well maintained? No. Do they have the best sound system? Probably Not. At the end of the day, I come here to watch a movie and that's all. I even eat before I get there because I'm never going to spend my money on movie theater food. It does need to be renovated and cleaned, sometimes it does have a not so great smell. But you can tell there's a lot of history in that theater, so that's why I love it but seriously needs to renovated. read more

I was there on today to see the movie Thor At the 3 pm show the place was dirty like they just open. The younglady behind the counter say that they open at ten that morning. We order food and the young man put a $7 hotdog in the microwave and the other items was not ready. I am very great at supporting black businesses because I have one. Y'all do better and go to another AMC theatre. ESPECIALLY if you are out of school and trying to take someone out. The seats here are beyond worn out, their deceased. The floors have never seen a broom or mop since the theatre first opened probably. It smells the further up you go! And to top it off, there's this moist feeling in the air that I couldn't stop thinking about my entire movie. I gave this place two stars because the lines move fast here. The concessions stand is regular movie concessions approved; I could complain about pricing but that's NY theaters! Also, because it's Harlem and I gotta show SOME love. This place needs some tlc. A little renovation to encourage more people to come inside and enjoy themselves, not worry about falling through the seat and touching them nasty floors! Also I'm not judging anyone who takes their s/o or anyone out to this theatre. It's just there's better out there and you both deserve better, but it's just a movie theatre so take that part lightly. This review will be simple! It's Magic Johnson Movie Theater what more do you expect? The food is expensive, very expensive! They also take long to prepare things such as pretzels, chicken fingers etc....The ticket pricing is very fair. I usually catch a matinee since that's my only available time to watch a movie somewhere other than home. I've never had an issue here with staff, food, filming quality and cleanliness.
