The day after they braided my hair, once it was dry, I realized that it was not done as requested. I asked that little hair be used to braid my hair and that it be really light as I only wear my hair in high ponytail and need it to last a while. I communicated this over 10 times to the braider. Who apparently does not understand English and was the only worker in the salon. Amen asked for pictures which I sent. She has since ignored all my messages and pictures. YOU CANNOT HAVE A BRAIDER BRAIDING HAIR IN CHICAGO BY HERSELF IF SHE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH. The braider braided my hair without any regard to my requests. The first time I went there, the braiding was nice. However, the lady that did my hair began to speak in her language and yell at me, demanding her money. I looked over it and went back a couple weeks ago. The same lady did my hair again. I was stating that I was supposed to be there at 12 when the person on the phone said 2 o'clock. That was the time I went. I would've preferred to because you get there earlier you get out. I didn't like the way I was treated by the same individual. I will never go back. This shop was fantastic and I definitely plan on going back! I am sad that I didn't write my review sooner because I forgot the name of the woman that did my hair. I think her name may have been Bella. I need to remember because she was awesome! The price was also great. It was $200 for braids. This was the first time I had my hair braided and while it felt tight, it wasn't too tight that my roots were being pulled on. The stylist that did my hair also worked so efficiently. She finished my hair in 5 hours, including me running to get cash (IT'S CASH ONLY) and her stopping to work on another client for a brief moment. I am really impressed with the stylist's work and I definitely plan to go back to get my hair braided. I am really grateful I found a salon that does good work. I have been going to Amen for the past couple of years and have been satisfied overall. They do a great job but I think some of the ladies in there have some bad attitudes. In addition, their customer service is very poor. In one of my most recent experiences (which was earlier this year prior to the COVID-19 shutdown), the lady that did my hair in there for the first time had an attitude and she was just plain nasty. I told Angel about this and she did not apologize for my experience nor did she seem interested in what occurred. Hair is not just about how good you are but it is also about how well you interact with your customers. I have not been back to them since March 2020 and I cannot recommend them in general because of this but I can recommend two of the ladies in there who did my hair often and had great attitudes - one of the ladies' name is Bella. I absolutely love Bella. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the other ladies' name but she is tall and a nice dresser. Of the 3 times I've come here, my experiences are inconsistent. First time was fine, I left with the box braid style I asked for at the price originally quoted to me. Second time I asked for crochet braids with loose curly hair using a blending method along the hairline. They claimed to understand but really didn't - I left with that no hairline look you typically see with crochet braids. Third time (May 2024) was the worst. I asked for medium Senegalese shaped into an angled bob. A 4hr job took 8hr, and I did not leave with the look I asked for. I was assigned to a newbie braider, there was a language barrier, and the braider brought her infant with her to work. I can have some sympathy for her as a mom, but using a fine tooth comb to detangle my hair, and cutting each braid randomly instead of getting a sharp, even, modern bob cut was just not acceptable. And you can't charge customers market rate for a newbie - that's a discount right there, period. Pretty common at hair salons to have tiered pricing for the stylists level of experience. I was never warned or given a price that took all this into consideration. Nobody apologized when I was leaving, even though they saw me trapped there for 8 hrs while they completed 2 full heads each in that same amount of time, and even had to come over and rebraid some sections of my hair. Amen African Braiding Salon provided me with the best braiding experience yet. Let me tell you how: 1. I wanted crochet braids and I've never gotten them before. Upon calling to find out more (after googling and you tubing everything) I was able to ask quite a few questions and they were patient with me. I was provided with options and was recommended what type of hair to buy based on my responses. After getting off the phone, they text me a picture of what the hair look like, brand and type. 2. I took the train there and it was a short walk (less than half a mile) to the salon (right off the Wilson stop on the Redline). I felt safe walking, even at night (I say that because I'm not from here and that's always a question that comes to mind). Upon entering the building, it was clean and modern looking. They provided me with a plastic chair (as they do all their guests) to put my personal things. They also had a tv for us to watch and pass time as well as offered bottled waters to guests. 3. My braider started on my hair not long after I walked in and sat down. She added hair to my braids and when she finished another young lady took over to crochet my hair. The entire experience took about 3.5 hours. The ladies were very nice and constantly asked if I was ok. They even allowed me to charge my phone (because my battery was on E! Lol!). They also ask what length you want your hair too. 4. After I was finished, they showed me in the mirror and asked if I liked it. I liked it, it was quite thick at first, but they told me it would go down. I asked for a few layers in the front and they did it for me. I went home and two-strand twisted my hair in six twists, after separating each strand (got this maintenance technique from a YouTube video), put it in a satin bonnet, woke up the next day and it was definitely less puffy. I know this is a long review, but I hope it helps as I had many questions about crochet braids being that it was my first time. Overall, this was a great experience and I will definitely return again. I've received plenty of compliments on my hair! They also sell a few hair products as well for hair maintenance. They recommended I buy wig spray but I already had some. :) The hair I used was Deep Twist by Freetress, #2, 22 inches (as it was recommended) They used three packs and the hair cost $5.99 a pack. I came here after 2 of my friends recommended this place. It only took my braider 5.5 hours to do my senegalese twist, that may seem like a long time to some, but I have a rather large head and it normally takes 8-12 hours. They are very accomodating. They give you a chair to rest your purse or snacks on and one to rest your feet on. Braids to the middle of your back are only $180. After the braider finishes a braid, she ask "is this length okay", "is this thickness okay". I will be back. read more

Be sure to text Angel a picture of the style you want - she's typically much easier to reach that way in comparison to calling. Never had an issue making an appointment. The place is a great size and very clean. The ladies are all very nice. Payment is CASH ONLY! There's a little food mart down the block that has an ATM if you forget. The prices are also extremely reasonable. Me and my honey planned a Thai honeymoon and with their tropical climate I knew that either braids or twists were the only hairstyle equipped to handle the heat and humidity. After a solid referral from a friend, I reached out to AMEN to schedule an appointment. The scheduling process was pretty simple. I called and spoke with someone who asked that I text a picture of the style I was looking for and from there we continued with the booking process via text. Appointment was confirmed twice, which I liked, and they were able to accommodate my request for a specific stylist. Upon arriving, I learned that payment is cash only (I meant to ask about that prior to my appointment). If you forgot to bring cash there's an ATM in the convenience store next door and the transaction fee is $2 if I remember correctly. My stylist, Abeline, was friendly, thorough, and professional. She frequently checked to make sure that I was comfortable, which was appreciated given that the hair braiding process is pretty long (my micro Senegalese twists took 6 hours). I will say that given how long the average customer's style takes they should definitely invest in wifi. I took both my work and personal laptops to the shop with me thinking that this would be a prime time to catch up on emails and reviews but was sorely disappointed to find that there's no wifi and even my hotspots on both my work and personal cells couldn't get a connection there. Bummer.......There's one TV in the shop, but the connection for that even went out a few times also. I think it's a must for a business like this to have reliable options for clients to stay entertained during the styling process. They do one test braid/twist to make sure the client knows/likes what they're getting. I will say that you need to make sure you're paying very close attention to this one braid because it's hard to get a feel for what your entire head will look like based on 1 braid. Although I do think Abeline did a great job, for next time I would ask that I get about half the amount of twists that I currently have. There's so many that it's almost impossible for me to put them in a style and i definitely can't put them all up at the same time. It's also impossible to wear them all down because the density of the twists is just too much. I could see myself loving them if she twisted them the exact same way, but just way less of them. That would also cut the styling time in half which is a definite plus. I thought pricing was more than fair. My twists were $200 and that included the kankelon braiding hair that was used. Given how long the process takes and how thorough my stylist did I don't think I could've asked for a better price. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this shop. My biggest suggestions would be to bring a book and make sure you know EXACTLY what you want and communicate that clearly to your stylist. read more

The shop is very nice and very clean. Addy ( I believe that's her name) did my hair and she was very time efficient and didn't have to take any breaks. I came in at 9am and was done by 3pm. I got medium mid back box braids and I'm in LOVE with them. I'm very tender headed and not one time was I in pain. I'm also a very fidgety person but somehow the place had me very calm and relaxed. She did the first braid and let me confirm if I like it or not. She also continued to check on me and see if I was ok through out the duration of her braiding. I was recommended here by my daughters grandmother and Aunty and I'm happy that I finally came. This place is top-notch. No gimmicks, no frills. You need to make an appointment, then the shop owner will text you the day before to ensure you're coming in. You should go in with a braid style in mind to show your stylist. They will quote you a price, you agree (or not) and they proceed. They braid very fast and efficiently. All the hair is at the shop, no need for you to bring any. They only take cash and they will ask for the money right before they finish the last sectIon of your hair. Called the night before requesting an appointment for box braids and was able to be seen at 9 the following morning. Everyone was super pleasant and attentive to me for the 5 hours that I was there. The woman who did my hair made sure she knew exactly what I wanted before she got started and was just so sweet and helpful. This was the first time I got my hair braided in years so she made sure she didn't do them too tight or make them too heavy for my scalp.
