Binta offers great customer service. Binta and her team are very sweet and hospitable, but I wasn't pleased with the hair and braiding technique. I asked for marley twists and she started the twist by first braiding the extensions and then began to twist the hair (see photo). I'm very particular about my hair and I like the consistency, so this really bugged me. Also before I came in, I called Binta and she said that the price was higher than usual because the grade of hair that would be used for marley twists is expensive. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT LADIES!! I'm not sure what hair she used, but it was cheap, it felt like plastic manufactured hair and it's not worth the additional fee. Also, I'm tall so I wanted my braids long and they're a little bit below my shoulders (which was another reason why the price was high). I paid a total of $280. Back home in Atlanta I pay $200 (not including a tip) for exactly what I want. Binta is sweet and all, but with that amount of money for braids, customer service alone just doesn't cut it. Next time I'll make arrangements to get my hair done in Atlanta. If you have the means to make that same trip, then I suggest you do before going here. I was very pleased with the way Lillie did my hair. I made an appointment last minute and they were able to accommodate me. I wanted a crotchet style so I asked for my perimeter to be twisted for a more natural look. She finished my hair in 4 hours. I would've given them a 5 but I was shocked that it cost $180 !! Yes they brought the price down to $160 but I'm trying to figure out how a full head of twists can cost $200 but crotchet is only $20 less. The most I should've paid was $130- other African shops I've called only charged $120. Their prices are way too high so I'm not sure if I'll be back. Lillie is very talented and her work is neat. My nine-year-old daughter has long, thick hair, and had been asking me about doing micro braids for a while. I found Binta's not too far from us & called, and at first Binta didn't think she could get us in same day, which was understandable...yet she said she'd call me back in 15 minutes, and she did and was able to. The stylist who was doing my daughter's hair wasn't there when we arrived and she was over an hour late, which we weren't happy about, but once she started, she was really fast!! After they realized just how thick my daughter's hair was they called for help, LOL, so she had two ladies working on her and it got done much faster. (3 1/2 hours instead of 5). The second lady was starting to do it like hers was (going straight back with no part), and I had to tell her that we wanted it with a part (I thought they should have asked instead of just assuming), but that was not a problem and they were able to do it how we wanted it. Overall we are very pleased. These braids are not cheap, but they are well worth it. Binta is super nice, very professional, and we would definitely use her service again. read more

I had been hearing about Binta for a while since I moved up North. Even my original braider had recommended her. So I texted her for an appointment. After the appointment was made and everything was set with a price, date/time, style and hair color, I get a text from her saying that I had called her shop and hung up on her, then she went on saying she checked her schedule again and there were no openings and told me to have a good night. I never called her shop, I only texted and I tried to explain through text and I even called and was sent straight to voicemail. It could have been a misunderstanding and she got the numbers mixed up, but to jump and cancel someone's appointment without even making sure she was talking to the right person. I had to come back and update my review after another wonderful visit at Binta's. This time I was lucky enough to have her work on my herself and I got small box braids. They look absolutely stunning, she moved very won't, but most importantly, she took the time -workout complaint! - to carefully braid the style so as to cover up a few thinning areas. She admitted that it took extra time but not in a snarky or mean way. She constantly made sure nothing was too tight, was gentle to my tender edges and the areas around the thinking spots. This was my first time getting Senegalese twists. I've been wanting to get my hair braided professionally for the past 2 years and after much research I decided on Binta. Binta herself was not the person that braided my hair but one of the other ladies. I was nervous about getting my hair braided because I have a very thin crown area and was uncertain on whether my hair would look right. I must say I truly love the results and the girl that braided my hair was very thorough and pleasant. She was gentle with my crown area and made my hair look very nice at the end of the process. She made sure that my bald spot areas were covered/hidden and that my the hair was not too heavy. It only took 5 1/2 hours to braid my hair. Update: Binta called me and apologized for my experience and offered a reasonable solution. I will be going back to the salon because I was satisfied with how my daughters hair turned out regardless of the experience with the young lady who braided her hair. I really appreciate Binta's effort to rectify the situation. Took way longer than the time the girl told me because she literally talked on the phone the whole entire time my daughter was in the chair. Maybe she's nice but she kept giving me dirty looks when I had something to say about how she was braiding my daughters hair. My daughter is satisfied with her hair but I won't bring her back because of the lack of costumer service. Not much regard was paid to now her natural hair was treated. My braids were frizzy just under a week after getting them. The girl braiding my hair took no care when handling my hair, even appeared irritated when I requested she not use a teeny tiny tooth comb on my thick hair. I wouldn't doubt if there is some damage to my ends. I wouldn't recommend this place if you care about the condition your natural hair is in after removing the extensions. read more

My only issue, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that I was quoted $180 on the phone by someone and when I got there it was $220. HORRIBLE!!!! TERRIBLE!!!! I called and set up an appointment for the same day for my step-daughter. I told Binta I wanted to pay with a card. She asked me to come in a little early to make sure that her "square" credit card app. Was working. I did just that. We had a 2pm appointment and I was there at 1:45. When we pulled up to the address listed I couldn't find the business so I called Binta to make sure we were at the correct place. She recognized my phone # and ignored my calls. I then called from my step-daughter's phone...of course because she didn't know the # she picked up! She told my step-daughter that she left and wasn't coming back. After reading the reviews, I really wanted to like this place. However, my experience was less than delightful. I try to be fair with my feedback. Which is why I created a list of pros and cons: Pros: Very clean Street parking Polite (at first) Flexible scheduling Price commensurate with the competition (hair is included with the cost of service) Cons: VERY CHEAP QUALITY HAIR Lack of focus on instruction when styling Interns working on hair Argumentative Rude behavior (if you are not satisfied with their work) Scheduling the appointment was a very pleasant process. She was willing to discuss what I was looking for and provided suggestions. As mentioned above, the quality of hair is extremely cheap. I recommend buying your own hair instead of using the "free hair". I texted the owner twice Nd asked about the quality/brand of hair she uses. Each time, my question was ignored with no response. Ironically, any other question I had, she did not hesitate to answer. The installation of the braids I wanted was very professional. However, my satisfaction quickly turned into disgust when they could execute on the style after I showed them pictures before the appointment and three times during the appointment. Needless to say, I hated the outcome of my hair. The good news is, they offered to do it over for free. I did however, have to take the braids down myself; which was not a problem. When I came back to get my hair redone. I was greeted with attitude and cynicism from the owner and her workers. They had the nerve to be at me. I'm the one who had to sit for 6hrs for the first installation, take it down for four hours, drive an hour back to the location, and sit there to get it done again another eight hours. I was excited by all the positive reviews and very optimistic about my appointment. Unfortunately I wish I had saved my time and money and went elsewhere. After showing the stylist a picture of what I wanted and double checking to ensure she was giving me the correct length and style throughout I still ended up getting a completely different hairstyle that I asked for. My braids are much shorter than I asked and paid for and the hair they provided for my twist was very poor quality. I think a lot of the length was cut off to help with the appearance of the hair. Before leaving I explained I was not happy and also called back to discuss a resolution. I was told that someone would call me back and I haven't heard anything. Omg, today was my first time going to Binta's shop. I made my appointment a day before & she had an opening for me today at 10am. I've had such bad experiences before at braid shops (quoting me a price on phone & then change it when I get there, rude customer service, and I even had one lady an hour late to do my hair!) I called at the last minute so I didn't think i could get in, but Binta called me right back with an appointment that she was able to plug me in. Everyone was so kind and courteous. I've never had my hair braided before I went to Binta's, except for the usual straight backs my mother would give me in elementary school. I am new to Chicago and recently decided that I wanted to try out box braids to give my hair a break from the heat. I didn't know of anywhere I could get my hair braided so I searched on Yelp and came across Binta's. I called her the same night I found her shop on Yelp and she quoted me a price and booked me an appointment for the next morning. I arrived at the shop nervous but excited and Binta exceeded the expectations I had for my hair. My edges have always had a hard life and one of the things I was nervous about was the tension of the braids breaking them off even more. Before I even said anything to her about them she told me that she noticed my edges were breaking and that she would try her best to braid them in a way that would help minimize further breakage and to, in the future, stay away from the heat. I was very happy that she was not only concerned about the aesthetic quality of my hair but also the well being of my natural hair. She was willing to take down any braids that felt too tight to readjust the tension or the size. She was friendly, hospitable, and not to mention she got my braids done within six hours!!! I love my braids and have already gotten soo may compliments on them! I really enjoyed getting my hair braided by Binta. Not only is she punctual, she is very friendly and personable. She listened to my requests and my braids are not excruciatingly tight - very comfortable and light, in fact - whilst leaving my edges intact! She moves very quickly and cleanly while tending to my tresses. I'm natural so this is critical for me. So after searching high and mighty for a place to do my first time Senegalese twist I discovered Bintas African Hair Braiding on yelp. I loved the fact that she was walking distance from home. Even though her price was higher than the other competition, ex) shops on Wilson ave and on the south side you get what you pay for. When I arrived to the shop I was greeted by Binta who was very friendly. The stylist who did my twist ( forgot her name) was extremely nice as well. The end result I absolutely love my twist and the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because it took 13 hours! Yes, 13 hours! But they are absolutely beautiful and very neat.
