I used American Air Testing services twice. They are quick to respond and they do their job, but eh, their fees are high, they adds up pretty quickly, especially if you are in a hurry, they charge you a lot of money. If you have to check for asbestos you can probably samples yourself, in our case we had suspect (confirmed later) to have disturbed asbestos in our drywall, we called them, they show up, they just drilled 3 holes per floor, usually you do it in the wall corners, behind doors (depending on the size of the apartment, 3 samples is ok for 1000sf or less), collect samples and send it to a lab. We did it for both floors, 6 samples, three rush 1-day, bill was almost $800 for about 30 minutes of work! Yes they produce a written report, so it is more than 30 minutes, they send samples to the lab, but it is still a lot of money in my opinion. Other services are anyway more or less on the same price range. If you know you can collect the samples yourself *safely*, you can send them to western analytical lab or any other certified lab for a fraction of the costs, in our case we couldn't because we needed a core sampler to attach to the drill that can avoid contamination, if you find one then you're good. Completely different story if you have to get air samples, then you have no choice than to call them, unfortunately we called them twice and we had to pay their time twice. So they are a family owned business, the father is a bit know-it-all guy and has some kind of attitude, during a phone call I couldn't ask too many questions because otherwise he had to bill me extra for his time (better to email them!), they do a good job, but expect to pay big bucks, if you are ready, go for it. read more

They offer a whole host of services - I needed them to help find a leak that's been plaguing us for many years. John and his son John came armed with infrared cameras, moisture monitors and all the necessary tools to source and document our issue. They were able to pinpoint the leak in under 2 hours and we received a very professional report documenting everything they encountered. these guys are good, they found a ceiling roof leak for us using thermography. If you have any type of water leak and you need to find out where it's really coming from with the minimum amount of opening up of drywall, call American Air. It is expensive, but they will find your leak. Great written report that I was able to share with a contractor to get the issue fixed. read more

American Air Testing charged me $690 for a mold air test (performed Jan 3rd) and mold remediation protocol. After the air test came back negative, I requested that they not create the mold remediation protocol - for they did not find anything to remediate. This request was on the 9th of January. John Riera of American Air Testing said he would call me back which he did not do. On January 24th, counter to my requests I received the remediation protocol. Other relevant details... my landlord told me to have this air test performed and then refused to pay the $690. I do know that the landlord went out of his way to obtain John Riera's contact information. This landlord has refused to spend any money on mold remediation. It is clear from the state of my health that American Air Testing's air test was fraudulent. John Riera also implied that my health problems were psychosomatic and made some off-color sexual attempts at humor. Do avoid at all costs. Worst $690 ever spent - I am contesting the charges. read more

Recently our landlord ripped open a wall in our apartment without covering my furniture and or containing the site of construction. Due to the age of the building I was worried about what we were breathing. I contacted American Air and they worked to fit me in quickly. During the testing they took the time to explain my options and what test and samples would be needed. The test results showed high levels of lead dust in our apartment. What impressed me the most were the final reports they sent me. Instead of just sending the test results, John and his team sent me three sets of professionally written reports complete with photos. John called after I received the reports and walk me thru what the results meant. This companies knowledge and detailed reports were extremely valuable when it came time for me to convince our stubborn landlord to have our apartment cleaned professionally. Riera, Founding Partner, promptly called me back and spent a half hour assessing my situation, proffering likely causes and offering suggestions on how to address the problem before going the air testing route. No hard sell, no pressure, just some good tips. I also really appreciated him calling me back the same day, and just before the July 4th weekend kicked in. Excellent customer service! Family run. Was trying to hire people to do home inspections and wanted to be thorough and signed up for a mold test, but it nearly doubled the overall inspection costs. Talked with John Sr. who already shifted his schedule around to accommodate me on about 24 hr notice. He called me and I told him my situation. Because the termite and home inspector had not yet been out and produced a report, he suggested that I wait and see if the reports come back with water related issues before proceeding. Since I have been seriously concerned with home air quality after being sprayed in the air duct by an air duct cleaning company, I called this company, thanks to the referral by Cole Hardware store. I talked to Laura. She immediately gave me precious advice what I can do write away, such as which air purifier is better to use and how I can ventilate. Her concern was enormous! We hired American Air Testing to conduct a clean air test for mold after our mortgage company demanded it in connection with a repair. American is a family business and is clearly oriented toward the customer. American gave us a very reasonable estimate and seemed interested in helping us find a way to satisfy the mortgage company at the lowest cost possible. They were also personable and very responsive to requests and questions. We called around to some other testing companies and they suggested much more extensive and expensive sampling. Ok, I admit I might have overreacted when I saw black mold growing all over the bathroom after our first major storm of many years. I contacted my landlord and he told me to just clean it and keep the dehumidifier he provided me going. I didn't want to be a pain to him, as I enjoy the luxury of rent control in San Francisco. But, how would I know whether it was an issue or not? I started researching options on Yelp and came across American Air Testing. I filled out their form on their website, and first thing the next business day there was an email (probably a form letter) from Michelle, giving me clear instructions and information about where to go from here. I was pleased to get that and decided to think about it. Michelle very politely called me to follow up a couple of days later. She was very friendly on the phone and did not try to sell me anything. She was patient and helpful and even suggested an option where I could get the mold tested myself for a very reasonable fee and then have the results submitted to my landlord. She told me she'd email me a follow up, which she did almost immediately. I'm not sure whether I will do the testing, but I'm thrilled with the customer service I've gotten so far. read more

I had a mold problem that broke my heart because I thought that my having fixed one leak had anticipated and prevented a problem that would have caused mold to grow. Turns out there were other, invisible leaks I didn't know about that caused water damage and mold growth between the walls. I found John Riera online and could not have been happier. After reading his test results, I hired a remediator recommended by John who tore down one wall. The fellow was impeccable. You should have seen the clean-up. At that point, however, it became clear that more work needed to be done--Once you open one wall, you see the extent of the damage. What impressed me was how well John worked with my contractor, who was already on site. For me it was cost-saving to use my contractor to finish the job. John went above and beyond to help locate the leaks and find workable solutions. His professionalism at all levels gave me confidence that his testing was sound.
