I was delighted by my experience here! Their turnaround on the sample to test which I gave them came back in the expected timeframe. I had no clue what I was looking at when I got the report so I called them and they happily explained to me what the results meant. Asbestos TEM Laboratories was easy to find on Google Maps and was open on December 30, 2019, so I could drop off a sample of the 1954 original drywall from our home in San Leandro for testing: it needed to be removed (demo'ed or remediated) for electrical and plumbing work on our new-to-us 65-year-old home. (The hardest part of finding Asbestos TEM Labs was finding out where to get drywall tested.) The testing costs a very reasonable $45 for a 3-business-day waiting period (my choice) and $60 for a 1-day turnaround. I used this company to test some fabric samples from my apt that I was worried had asbestos. They were very helpful to me over the phone --they normally work with contractors and insurance companies, it appears, but they were happy to accommodate a private citizen, and walked me through the process. They explained how to collect and bag the sample, and how to properly fill out the "chain of custody" form that's required to go with it (it's downloadable from the website). The price was very reasonable for the turnaround time, especially compared to hiring a testing company to visit your residence. (But be careful if you think you might have asbestos materials--don't go touching that stuff.) They sent the results exactly when promised (and lucky for me, it was the answer I wanted to hear: no asbestos!!). I was so lucky to find this company nearby. read more

I wanted to remove the popcorn ceiling in my house and the contractor told me I had to have it tested for asbestos. I didn't know where to turn; so of course I looked on Yelp. The reviews were great, so I decided to give this place a try. The process is simple - use a water bottle and putty knife and scrape about a tablespoon of material from the ceiling and bring the sample here in a sealed baggie. I paid $45 for a 3 day turnaround (I brought in the sample on Monday and was emailed the results by the end of the day on Wednesday). The business is easy to find and there is an attached parking lot. The receptionist was cheery and helpful and the testing process was so simple. I would definitely recommend this place if you need to test your popcorn ceilings for asbestos ! read more

Yelp saves the day! We are removing our popcorn ceilings after 40 years. Since we have an infant, I wanted to know if there was asbestos in the spray-on ceiling material. My contractor told me he found an asbestos testing place all the way down in Hayward that runs the test in 5 days for $160. I did a quick search on Yelp and found Asbestos TEM Labs in Berkeley. I called ATEM after hours and a HUMAN picked up the phone. Surprised, I asked a plethora of questions about the testing process, cost, etc. I was happy to learn from this very lovely, patient staff person that they could run the test in 3 days for $45--a mere fraction of the $160 my contractor quoted me. He gave me some online resources for how to obtain the sample from my house safely. My contractor scraped off some popcorn, and off I went to the ATEM to get it tested. ATEM is located near the 80 freeway in Berkeley. Free parking right in front of the office in a fenced off lot. Receptionist greets you, and you fill out very EASY paperwork. I waited 3 days, and voilà--an electronic report was sent to me in a timely fashion. Phew! No asbestos found in my sample! Now, I can have our ceilings worked on without the added fear of releasing nasty asbestos particles in my family's living environment! Thank YOU, Asbestos TEM. Unfortunately these guys are great at letting me know I have asbestos from a botched asbestos abatement done by Synergy Enterprises. They've been terrific in having same day tests done on my samples and the on-site geologist has even walked me through some of the results I've received for asbestos and lead-paint testing. read more

The email testing response was prompt. However, I found the report a bit confusing as there was not a very clear explanation about the acceptable level of hazardous material. The only explanation was in a footnote. I had to call to get a better explanation. I think another column on the report with an explanation for each sample would make it more understandable. read more

I collected a sample and drove to their office. I talked to the person at the desk and asked for expedited service. I paid 60 bucks for the faster turnaround. (Normally it is 45 bucks.) Alas, the sample had asbestos in it, but the speed of service was great. I dropped the thing off at 8AM and they emailed the results at 4:45. Came here to have some insulation tested and since the house was built in 1942 I was sure that it would contain asbestos. Turns out it's negative for asbestos! The receptionist was super kind over the phone and when dropping off my sample. It was 2pm and I opted for the 4-6hour test result time for I think $65? Don't quote me. I wasn't sure they'd finish it since they closed in 3 hours but sure enough I received it before they closed by email :D The report was easy to read. This company is fantastic. I dropped my sample off at 12 noon and had a written report emailed to me by 2pm. But even better yet, I had asked if they would call me with the results - They did! And it only took one hour! The women who called me was extremely knowledgeable, very helpful, and "nice," too! It was worth the small additional fee. I highly recommend this company and highly recommend that anyone (especially Rossmoor residents) have their pop-corn ceiling's tested before talking to anyone about removal. Every Contractor, pop-corn removal company, drywall company, etc...(everyone) I asked about the pop-corn on my new Rossmoor co-op insisted it had asbestos and you had to pay $3000 to $3500 to remove it by a Hi-Vac company. This is NOT True. I had under .10 (almost nothing) of asbestos in my ceiling. I called the EPA and AIr Quality and was told ONLY 1 or above requires special handling everything under 1 is considered solid wastes (NON-toxic, and NOT hazard waste) and is considered "NORMAL" trash! read more

We needed to test the paint on our home for the presence of led and were referred to Asbestos TEM Labs for this service. I contacted the company by phone, which was answered by a live human during business hours - hooray! I was given the necessary information for submitting the paint sample and directed to the company's website to obtain the fillable PDF forms to submit with the sample. So far, so good. I submitted the sample and waited for the report to be sent to me (within 3 business days of submission). After 5 days, I contacted the company to learn the report would be sent to me within in the hour. It wasn't. But, in their defense, I did receive the report by 10 AM the next day. Okay, no big deal. The report was thorough and comprehensive, but failed to include a summary that would have been helpful in interpreting the information for the layperson (me). All in all, I'd use these folks again and would recommend them to others. I spoke with two (2) different employees, both of whom were patient, helpful and courteous. The only knock would be that I felt they over-promised and under-delivered regarding the time line, and really, not by much. read more

Fast and easy analysis. I'm a home owner with a 1979 built home with popcorn ceilings so wanted to know if asbestos was present. I took a sample of the ceiling (following safe practices, wet the ceiling area, only scrape an inch etc) and a sample of linoleum floor that was coming up. They tested not only the linoleum but two layers of mastic that was attached. They email you the report with a thorough explanation. Convenient location in Berkeley, easy to get too. Drop off took all of 5 minutes. Pricing was good. Nice people. Will use them again if I need more testing. read more

Very poor business practices! I needed testing of popcorn ceiling before finalizing the purchase of a property. Hoping that the 2 yr old 1-star Yelp helped the business improve, I called and spoke to a friendly, informative worker. So I filled out their online application, faxing it in. (There was no way to submit it online.) When someone else dropped the sample off, the fax was already there. They promised 3 days for emailed results, so after 10 days, I called. They hadn't even done the test. They supposedly tried to page me (I had received several pages that day, so I don't believe that they tried to page me.) They were trying to contact me to get payment before the test was done, though their application asks where to bill. They also had my phone numbers, address, full name and email written twice. If they needed pre-payment the application should not have asked for a billing address, and they could have told that to the delivery person. If they couldn't read the contact information (which is what they now say), they should have asked for clarification from the delivery person. They just didn't bother. read more
