I am devastated by Mr. Fanelli's conduct, which compounded already dire circumstances and can best be described as negligent, unethical, unprofessional, and downright inhumane. I did not have that opinion when we met, but after he wrote my report, his non-responsiveness has created significant consequences for me that cannot be understated. In January 2020, I had been dealing with three fraudulent DBI inspections in my apartment over 18 months regarding a nonstop water leak from the apartment upstairs and resulting in severe levels of mold due to the lack of violations from DBI that would have ensured a resolution. Brazenly, my landlord's paid building manager was a recent former executive at DBI whose job now seems to be brokering bribes for individuals who want to get out of violations without doing any work. And my front door camera recorded the bribe to abate multiple violations right out in public on my porch with a Senior Inspector and two other Inspectors. The Senior Inspector had each time prohibited me from recording their inspections due to a DBI policy that was proven to be a lie at DBI Executive Offices on January 24, 2020. My best friend had just been hospitalized due to conditions of the apartment, and the landlord served me with an Unlawful Detainer at the same time. Something had to be done, so I needed an objective assessment to counter the fake DBI qualitative assessments claiming they saw no water or mold despite seeming shocked at the severity of it while they were with me and off-camera. I vetted Mr. Fanelli from a bid I put on Yelp and had heard from a number of environmental specialists. Our scientific backgrounds, once a basis for rapport, only underscore the betrayal now. Mr. Fanelli came out and took multiple samples and controls, and sent his samples to independent labs for species identification. He wrote an excellent report about severe levels of mold, challenges with the water that led to Chris' death a few weeks later, claiming the apartment was uninhabitable, and that called out DBI who had just been there for being either grossly incompetent or in collusion. However, Mr. Fanelli would thereafter make decisions that would allow DBI to continue their corrupt practices, a real shrinking violet. But it is worse than cowardice. My landlord's retaliation went further than a typical eviction in that she claimed multiple violent threats I had made and perjured to the court at least three more times that I was an immediate risk to public health, bypassing the COVID-19 moratorium. These accusations fell apart in court, but not without significant cost and stress to me. Mr. Fanelli had urged me to continue to live elsewhere, and I remained hopeful that my landlady would correct the habitability concerns, yet without the help of Mr. Fanelli, I would be in court for 10 months, my best friend dead at the age of 39. I ended up losing the lawyer assigned to me by the Eviction Defense Collaborative due solely to the silence from Mr. Fanelli. When he evaded her calls for weeks as she desperately sought his testimony to help, his absence led to her accusations that my mother and I had forged his report and that he did not even exist. Mr. Fanelli contacted her once, stating clearly that he had independently written the report, but she continued to believe it was a forgery since he would not communicate after that. Mr. Fanelli's negligence or paralyzing fear led me to fire my attorney as she went, breaking attorney-client privilege to tell my landlord's attorney that I had forged the report. Suffering the loss of my friend, forced out of my home during 9 months of COVID-19, juggling rent for two homes even though she waived back my rent for 10 months of the trial when she dismissed the case and settled to move me and pay for damages, I had to legally represent myself against the top landlord attorney in SF, spiraling me into a legal and financial nightmare amidst a disabling health decline from the ordeal. Now I have my landlord in court to claim damages and spoke with Mr. Fanelli a month ago about being an expert witness, to which he agreed but wanted to know the dates, which I sent to him. He has not returned calls since, in a repeat performance and potentially repeat devastation for me in Court. His refusal to stand as a witness, despite earlier promises, has jeopardized my fight against my landlord's negligence and the corruption he ignored. His inaction speaks volumes, leaving me burdened with legal fees, the loss of a friend, and a disabling health condition. This ordeal, exacerbated by Mr. Fanelli's neglect, has been life-altering. His disregard for the gravity of this corruption and its impacts is not just unprofessional; it's destructive. Through this review, I aim to document the profound consequences of his choices, underscoring the urgent need for accountability in situations of environmental and legal negligence. read more

Believe the good reviews! I left ERT a voice mail a couple of days before the holidays and got a call back from Richard within 1.5 hours. Within the first few minutes, it was clear that I wasn't looking for the testing services (which is what ERT does), but Richard stayed on the phone with me and patiently explained things to me. He even gave me the name of a local company that could do the abatement work should I need it. There was no pressure for me to engage him for the testing services at all. When I inquired about the testing, he was transparent with the pricing and what would be involved. This company is legit and I can see why they get good reviews. Total scam artists. Do not use for mold. Their 5 star reviews are fake. I paid $500 for ERT to do a high-sensitivity comparison test inside air quality to outside air quality. The technician "forgot to charge his battery" and went to double check but "did not have his inverter in the truck" But rather than admit he could not adequately perform the outside test, he made up a bunch of lies and took both samples from ten feet away within my home. Richard is a very manipulative person and talked a big talk, I was reeling from living in a toxic mold environment. When I saw what he was doing, it was clear it was not an adequate test, no matter how much Richard gave the sales pressure. I immediately (same afternoon) called the office to discuss processing the test results since they were both from inside the home (second one door was open) and asked to set up a new test date. The Father, Dominick had been initially knowledgeable and helpful, I thought he would make it right. Only got runaround. ERT's whole business is a scam. Brought up my concerns to ert@ertbayarea.com and got the following response: "Lol, sounds like you got what you deserved." How is scamming their customers with useless tests and then insulting and laughing at the customer, a service? UPDATE: 3/2018 The owner of the company Richard Franili sent me hate mail with personal insults since posting the above review. A few new "5 star reviews" appeared at the same time. I'm about to do major home renovation to my house and needed to do asbestos testing for the contractors. I called around to get quotes and most weren't willing to provide an exact amount. Most companies did not give me an exact quote. Quote prices vary due to site visit cost, number of samples that will be needed, and time spent on location. Richard and ERT gave me a flat rate and it was on the lower end of the spectrum of quotes. That simplified the decision so I decided to use their company. Richard and his assistant arrived on-time of the appointment despite heavy rain. He explained the process and collected the samples for lab testing. He was quick and efficient, taking only about 20 minutes. Afterwards, he even gave me a 10% discount for a YELP check-in! This is the worst service I ever got, I called Richard and he came to take asbestos samples from my ceiling and floor, and I paid $350 which is super expensive to do asbestos testing by the way he told me the results would be available after 4 business days, I waited for 5 business days with no response, I called him more than 30 times over 4 days (so I waited for 9 business days) with no answer so I decided to go to their address to check my results, the owner told me there is no record for me and if I don't leave he would call the cops!! Please stay away from this business, they are scam, rude and over expensive, I ended up doing the same test with another company for only $30 which was shocking for me !!! read more

Five stars without a doubt. My husband and I were going to install recessed lighting in our house later that week when we realized we should check our old home for asbestos. I was trying to make an appointment with this company as they had good reviews. My friend was in urgent need, and the company told me that they can do the work either the weekend and next Monday. That was the last conversation we had on Friday. I called them by 4:30 ~5:00 pm Friday to confirm the appointment on Monday, but it went to their voicemail as usual. They did not call me back that day or weekend. When I called them again Monday to secure a time that day (again the mailbox), they told me No, and did not show any intention to help us out. I was pissed off, as my friend had prepared for Monday appt. One thing that I was not so happy about was their #800 line. There was never a person to pick up the call DIRECTLY. It was always a call back later. Considering the inefficient 800 mailbox and their general customer service spirit when I was in need of timely response, I won't recommend them. I won't! read more

I checked with folks at my company and two of them highly recommended ERT Environmental Remedial Testing. We are moving into a new place and before we do, I wanted to ensure that there weren't any mold, VOC, asbestos, or other air quality issues. My son has severe environmental allergies and so we have to be very diligent. Previously we just did mold testing but never realized there was another deeper level of environmental checks that can be done. We called Richard on Wednesday and he was able to come out on Friday. This was important since we were on a tight timeline as we needed to know whether the house was 'healthy' and what remedies we need to do prior to moving. Richard was on time and was very thorough on the inspection. He went up to the attic, he inspected around the HVAC, checked in all areas where there may be possible water intrusion, asbestos, or VOC. During the time we were waiting for the system to collect the air sample (2 hours), Richard helped explain things to us and what was a concern. Very highly recommended to Richard. As a new homeowner, you'll likley run into issues with the house that you have no experience in dealing with. In my case it was asbestos in our walls. My contractor recommended an Asbestos testing company (not this one) and they came out, did their testing and provided me with a complex report that was difficult to understand and basically told me I had asbestos and referred me to their parent company to do the cleaning. Do you ever get that feeling that you're being taken advantage of because of your unfamiliarity with the situation? That was me, i felt super uncomfortable with the report and diagnosis. Instead of explaining to me the situation and my options, they were basically asking me to give them a check for $10K to do the containment and cleaning. So i did some research on my own, went on yelp and reached out to Environmental Remedial Testing to get a 2nd opinion. First off, i called on a Saturday so I expected to get a voicemail - but instead Richard the owner answered. I explained to him my situation, that i had this report and didn't know what the heck it meant and wanted some guidance. While on the phone with me, Richard reviewed the report and gave me a list of requests that I should ask the original testing company. One of those requests was to specify a different type of test to be performed on the sample which ended up revealing that the asbestos levels were in fact much lower than the original report which meant the $10K bill went down to less than $3k! These guys know their stuff, they are honest and straightforward. The other company (who I will not mention) basically tried to swindle me for more money and if it weren't for Richard and ERT I would have had little choice but to fork up the additional cash. To anybody living in an RV or vehicle of any type, you should get your vehicle tested for mold by these guys. They have the best price in the area. Mold occurs naturally and is very hard to prevent inside an RV/mobile home/van/trailer. My friend's 2014 Mercedes Sprinter already has visible mold in the back, and that's a $130k RV at only 2 years old! Imagine what could be lingering in your 20 year old Airstream...NOT SAFE! I full-time in a small RV and suspected there was mold in my vehicle that was causing me health issues. I contacted several mold inspectors in the San Jose and Santa Cruz area. Most places I reached were either a call center that couldn't answer my questions because they needed to have a technician call me back, or weren't willing to look at a van. Those that were willing to look at it wanted to charge around $450. The guys at ERT were so nice on the phone! I've had experiences like this before, where you know right away that it's a family run business who cares about their customers and their reputation. The older gentleman on the phone expressed sincere concern for me during our initial 20 minute phone conversation. He understood that I couldn't afford a $450 test, but that if I was living in a toxic environment, it could potentially be life threatening. He dropped the price to $250! They were extremely flexible with dates and times. We decided I'd drop it off at their location and let it sit with all the windows shut for the entire day in order to get an accurate air sample; they compare the air inside the van to the air outside. They did the test on a Friday and I got the results back on Tuesday. They need to send the samples to a lab and I suspect the lab is closed on weekends or at least Sundays. The report was detailed and showed the exact levels of everything tested. Richard emailed me the results and when I replied with a couple questions, expecting a couple one-sentence answers, he responded at length, with excellent comments. We emailed back and forth a few times as I kept having more questions, and he instantly replied, again at length, to all of them. Richard even emailed me links to several air purification units on Amazon designed for cars that he thought would be ideal for my situation. Bottom line: whether you have a home or a home-on-wheels, you should definitely go to these guys! They care about their customers. read more
