Paid for a seat with extra legroom, when I checked in online, 24 hrs before flight, they made me choose another seat for free but all the legroom seats, like the one I paid for were taken. I went to the counter when I arrived at the airport and they told me I would get my money refunded but that never happened. American Airlines have really good flight deals. When you buy one of these deals, be aware you get what you pay for. NO FRILLS. On my last overseas trip I had four plane changes. Out of the four, three were on really old, run down, no amenities flights/planes. Seats are so close tighter, no leg room, and seat don't recline back very far. Two of the flights had no monitors to watch movies on, However, you do have access to their free American In Flight Entertainment WIFI. BUT you have to download the app on your phone in order to access movies. One of the overseas flights was an old plane. They did have a movie playing on very small overhead monitor screens that were spread out throughout the plane. (Like in the good old days where everyone had to watch the same movie.) This was the case here too. We all had to watch Mary Poppins. They passed out free headphones if you wanted to watch it. Again the seats were to close for comfort. They had meal service on the oversea flights, but like any other airline the food isn't that good, and the food really wasn't good on these flights. Drinks were available along with pretzels or a hard biscotti cookie. The overseas flight on the way back was a much nicer airplane with individual monitors. Choices were much better on this flight. You can choose from a list of movies/television shows. Seat were a touch bigger with a touch more leg room. The problem (besides old planes) their communication needs to be better at the terminal, especially if there is a flight delay, and/or changing gates. The last leg of my trip we kept getting flight delay, after flight delay, and then they finally moved us to another gate, and another flight delay. I'm biased as I've been flying American Airlines since 1991, and now I'm part of the 2 Million Miler Club! It would have been sooner if I hadn't flown almost a million miles on United, but it just allowed me to appreciate American more. As an elite member for the last 20+ years, I have had the privilege of enjoying all the perks and benefits of American and status does have lots of benefits. When things don't go as planned, American has almost always done right by me except for an uncanny time with a snow storm that had me diverted to Pittsburgh. Anyway, hope you give American a chance or 2nd chance as I have been blessed by their service and have no regrets. read more

We had no issues boarding. The plane we were on was a bit outdated. There's no screens on the seats and the ceiling of the plane looks like it was in need of some cleaning. The positive of no screen on the back of the seat is that there's a compartment to hold your mobile device, or tablet. The plane does have Wifi although I did not connect to it during our flight. The flight attendant was helpful and the flight was mostly smooth. read more

Flight was canceled mid way through trip due to storms and low fuel. Storms are understandable, not having enough reserve fuel to circle on hold or divert??? Rebooked for the next day, hotel voucher was supposed to be provided by email. That never happened. Gate agents basically lied and placated customers so we would disperse. They did pay for me to stay at the airport Hilton and gave me a $12 voucher for airport breakfast Was told there were mechanical difficulties which prevented flight from leaving on-time to my departing airport, had to get a new plane. Overall flight was good but would have liked at least some water. Next morning, first flight out to Cleveland. Plane delayed due to mechanical difficulties. I purchased a ticket in 6/24, had to cancel the flight due to an illness (cancer). I had received a credit. On 3/25/25 I attempted to schedule a flight for 8/25, but have been told that since the "flight" is out of 1 year time period, I cannot use the credit. AA apparently does not back up their credits. We flew in and out of SFO to visit Napa... we really don't like this airport, it's horribly in efficient, mostly do to its tram system and somewhat ineffective signage, but we did absolutely enjoy the service we received from all of the American Airlines staff... from checking in our luggage to the gate staff to the crew on our plane, they were all friendly and helpful. AA is definitely our favorite airline! read more

Looking for flights from Vancouver to Chicago and Chicago to Vancouver direct. Seems like there are so many flights to and from Chicago with American Airlines and United. I ended up choosing AA because of the time. Also I do collect miles with AA. I believe out of all the mileage programs, AA has one of the best. Nothing like wow here. Expected delay at times and or gate changes. When flying out of AA, I have experienced 5 different times of gate changes within one hour. I ended up running back and forth around the airport. Yes there was delay at the end but I don't think it was AA's fault. They had to change the tires on the plane. Flight was ok. Not like wow with the legrooms. I ended up in a middle seat which kind of sucks but I have accepted it at the end. The seats are crammed. The worst airlines. ever. A business where I can't even stand to see a single star associated with their name. First they canceled our flight for no reason given , they then re- booked us for several hours later that same day and after we finally boarded the re- scheduled flight they de- boarded us hours later sighting an issue with the bathroom on the plane. They then fixed the bathroom issue several hours later but then canceled our flight again due to not having a pilot by this time available to fly the plane. Whaaat? Then they refused to give us back our luggage as claim they didn't have sufficient staff to unload the luggage from the plane. Had the nerve to ask us to return to O'hare the next AM at 6:00 am to get our luggage. We got there at 6:00 am ( after going home from the airport at 12:00 am to sleep 4 hours)and got our actual luggage in our hands at 12:00 pm. Outrage. Then, to top it off they couldn't get us on another flight for 3 more days. Insane. We missed an entire leg of our trip. We had to pay for a hotel we didn't use and attractions we couldn't go to. I contacted customer service and they gave us an insulting $125.00 for " future flight credit " to be used within a year so we can try them again and restore our " confidence" in their airline. Are you kidding me? They should have given us $1200 for our troubles. $125.00 is truly insulting for the money we lost as a result of their cancelations/ unavailability to re book ( not to mention wasted time) . There is no way I'm giving them a dime or another try. Do yourself a favor and fly another airlines. American Airlines deserves zero stars. read more

I wish I could leave a 0 star rating. My 15yo little sister is stuck in a random room with a connecting door that leads to another room with a teen boy in it. No lock. Overnight. If that doesn't say enough, then the reason she is in this situation is because her plane was supposed to land at one terminal, but another plane was still there, causing her to miss her connecting flight home. The fault lies completely with the airline. She made it to the gate a minute after boarding closed and they would not let her on. My kid sister. Alone. At 10pm. It is now 1:30am. They have not paid for the next flight, they have not refunded the first one. They did not give her an option for a hotel. They did not give her meal vouchers. They led her on a wild goose chase from one customer service stand to another before she could see a representative who wouldn't let her get a word in. I am furious. He was able to switch my flight for me today 02/07/24 around 3:00 today within seconds allowing me to get on the current flight out that was headed out at 3:15 to my Louisville Kentucky airport instead of waiting for the 8:15 flight out that I was originally booked for. It was the final boarding period at 3:04 and he could have easily turned me down but chose to go above and beyond and get me switched on the flight with no issues. He was friendly, polite and deserves a shout out from his leadership. I will always remember this amazing experience thanks to him. My favorite airline! Why? Well, are any of them really all that good? All the airlines have problems, so you just have to pick the one that suits you best. I like American Airlines because I'm 6' 2" tall and I need leg room. On most planes / airlines my knees are hitting the seat in front of me and I end up with leg cramps. On American I always have enough leg room even on cheap seats, so I am happy with that. Of course American Airlines has it's problems and I've had issues myself, but for.the most part this is the airline I prefer. read more

Well, this is only the second or third time in our lives we've been to a first-class travel lounge. It does feel quite elitist. Way nicer than the regular travel lounge. Once we got inside everyone was very nice and they whisked away your dirty plates and asked if you wanted drinks constantly, so they were definitely tending to you. They had better, given the number of miles or the number of dollars you have to spend to get an international business or first class seat to begin with! We were there between lunch and dinner so the choices were lighter, which was a good thing because webknew they would stuff is on the plane later. We tried the scallops with spinach and cream sauce - amazingly tender, perfectly cooked and a good balance of acid and cream. We also tried the chicken pot pie which was beautiful, but the puff pastry was the best tasting part of the dish. The chicken filling was rather watery and lackluster. We also tried the homemade potato chips which were tasty, however it would be nice if they had an option with either grated cheese or maybe a little truffle oil on them. The roasted mushrooms with spinach were savory, garlicky and well cooked without being over done. The one thing that was totally confounding to me was they had a full open bar that you could serve your own drinks and yet they had no sweet vermouth so you could not make your own Manhattan. They had two kinds of cherries and lots of bitters, Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve and even Basil Hayden bourbon, but no vermouth! The sparkling wine section also was abundant, but someone needs to manage it more carefully as most people don't know how to put the bubble preserving tops on the bottles and many of them were flat. They were way too many open bottles at one time. The one thing that was rather disappointing was the entry process and the agent that took care of us when we were coming into the lounge. Instead of assuming that we were in the right place she assumed that we shouldn't be getting in and only because our mobile passes did not include our international business fight she kept making comments telling us that basically we shouldn't be there and then asking us questions in a condescending way that would have been very problematic for people that don't travel as much as we do. Maybe a lot of people scam and try to get in there but if she were nice and had a positive attitude maybe more people who really shouldn't be there but accidentally try to get in would want to join because they would think "oh they're so nice at that lounge" instead of being treated like a second-class citizens. read more

5/21 and 5/22 - So, I was scheduled to fly out on May 21st. Ha! Ha! Ha! Joke was on me, literally. I always get a late-ish flight when leaving family, so we can share the last day together, rather than take off first thing in the morning. I make sure we do one last thing together. So, I arrive to the airport. The flight was delayed. Okay, no biggie, I think and I grab a drink. But, they kept delaying the flight and delaying the flight. It was ridiculous. First it was a minor issue with the aircraft. Then it was something else, then it was the airline crew was over the time limit allowed to work. Then it was waiting for a new crew. The new crew NEVER came...meanwhile now, it is midnight. I was supposed to be at work the next day...(good luck with that)... I believe that the airline knew that there was not going to be a flight and instead of giving us a credit voucher for a future use (for the inconvenience) they decided to blame it on others. In the end, we did get a voucher for a disgusting hotel that was 30 minutes out of the way. By the time we got to the place, and got checked in it was almost 2 am and the next flight left at 8:15 am that morning. So, I showered left my clothes out for the next day and knocked out waking up at 5:30 am to throw on clothes and hit the shuttle to make sure that I got to the airport on time, to make sure I avoid any rush hour traffic. It was awful. Then the $12 voucher that they gave us, barely covered anything. It was an absolute disaster and American Airlines should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Let me start by saying this has been the worst customer service I think I've ever received. Our flight from Sacramento to Chicago was delayed by an hour, which caused us to miss our connecting flight to Burlington, and we had to stay overnight in Chicago. Now, all of that would be understandable and just bad luck, but something one has to expect when traveling. Here's where I have an issue. The original plane from Sacramento to Chicago's AC was not working properly, and We all sweat through our clothes. Even when several customers pleaded with the flight attendants to allow those with tight connections at O'Hare to get off the plane first to have the best chance for making it, they did nothing to enforce this. Customers even began to argue and snap at one another with all the heat and pressure to get to their respective gates, and again, the flight attendants did nothing to help. Once we finally got off the plane, the app stated that our connection (about 1 and a half miles distance from our initial gate) was still boarding, so we ran the whole way. My husband has a rare neurological disorder that makes movement very difficult to coordinate, so this was extremely hard for him. When we reached our gate, the flight was gone even though the app said it was due to leave 15 minutes later. Additionally, the flight attendants on the Sacramento plane told us that American Airlines would automatically rebook us new flight. This was untrue. In fact, we couldn't get any American Airlines employees to give us any answers. So, as the alert message had suggested to us, we called American Airlines customer service. The automated message said that we would get a return call in 90 minutes, that never happened, so we called again...still didn't get a call back. So, exhausted, uncertain of where our luggage was or what to do, we called the airport Hilton at O'Hare and asked if they usually take hotel vouchers from American Airlines (as we of course assumed AA would be paying for a room since the delay was a mechanical issue), and the desk attendant said they do get vouchers from AA. At that point we decided to call AA back and wait on hold since twice already they had not called back in the allotted time. So, with AA hold music playing on the phone, we walked for 20 minutes to the Airport Hilton hotel hoping that if we could get AA on the line they would of course understand and give us a voucher for the hotel, but as we waited on hold, we grew more hungry tired and disgusted by our filthy sweaty clothes from the hot plane and running. We decided to ask the hotel if they would consider refunding us and taking the voucher retroactively. We thought, "surely AA will make sure to take care of us here, we've waited and been through enough!". But unfortunately this ended up being opposite experience. We went up to our room, still on hold waiting for AA to answer, and when they finally picked up the line, they told us they cannot give us a voucher for this specific hotel, and that we would have to file a long form out "requesting" reimbursement. We had no clothes (as our bag was still seemingly checked) and not toiletries. So we then had to ask the hotel for basic toiletries and buys extremely expensive clothing items from the gift shop in the hotel (it was the only thing open at that time of night in the airport). The hotel staff were very kind and went the extra mile for us, giving us discounts, and even a little gift card for coffee from their coffee bar. None of that was their responsibility, they just did it all as a courtesy. However, all of what you'll read here entailed AA's responsibility, basic needs of their customers. They did nothing but rebook us for a flight the next day. No discounts, no upgrades, no nothing, no offering to rectify the situation by paying for our flight home. The next morning we got up very early, went to our gate nice and early and asked the gate attendant to please help us track our bag, because we had already been without it for one night, and couldn't spare another. The gate attendant typed in our baggage and assured us that the bag was already loaded on the plane we were about to board (going to DC). When we arrive in Burlington this afternoon, guess what?! No bag, AND, our bag was still in Chicago. The AA folks at the Burlington counter we much nicer, but still couldn't help with any of the issues we had faced. Any airline gets poor reviews overall, since it is more likely that people will review something like an airline only when something goes very wrong. I have had plenty of times that have included annoyance with American AIrlines - no question about it. But on balance, I think 3 stars would be fair, since I have had plenty of flights that go well. Basic Economy is a moronic racket, and it's a shame that we have to pay normal prices for worse airline conditions now. My most recent flight was delightfully empty, so I got an entire row to myself! Oh yeah! It was a shame that all three lights in the row were burnt out. I moved forward to the next empty row, and the lights worked there, but this shouldn't have happened. I get one light being out, but three in a row? Keep in mind that people mostly have to pay to select seats - $41 for bulbs that don't work?! Also $20 for WiFi is disgusting. It was still a good flight, though - smooth and comfortable! The flight attendants couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. This is often the case on their flights! I take issue with their captive audience announcement to buy their specialized credit card. I find it tacky and annoying. It takes well over 3 minutes and is hard to drown out, even with headphones. They already have us at their whim for seat charges, bag charges, WiFi charges, and goodness knows what else - do we need to sit through a loud advertisement? It has all the subtlety of a lead balloon and the class of an old Jerry Springer episode. Do better please :( read more

AA out of Chicago just keeps getting worse and worse. The gate agents here have a serious God complex. Every stinking time I fly out of here (and it's quite often) they make me test my carry-on in the little cage. It's gotten to the point where I pack it half full so they won't ask me to do it. Nope. They still do. This last time was absolutely ridiculous. My carry-on bag was nowhere near full. My personal bag was stuffed to the gills. I had a blanket, Garrett's popcorn and a water as extras. Of course, I'm going to "wear" the blanket & the water will go in the seat pocket. I told them the popcorn & personal item would fit under the seat. They said it wouldn't. They grabbed my carry-on & wheeled it away. Wtf?! Then they brought me a claim check for my carry-on which was now checked. Guess what? My freaking popcorn & personal bag very easily fit under the seat and there was plenty of open space in the overheads. Thanks jerks at ORD. Now I get to wait for my bag at freaking midnight. Well - we get in to Austin & there was a 40 minute wait for my checked bag. Thanks for making me a zombie at work the next day & for making my friend wait that extra time to drive me home. My message to American Airlines pretty much summarizes my experience: "To whom it may concern, I would first like to start by saying that my customer experience with American Airlines has been horrible. Every flight I had for this booking was delayed for multiple hours. However, the most egregious situation was the flight from ORD to SMF, where AA was completely unable to find adequate staffing (as highlighted in national news). In particular, after a multi-hour delay waiting for a pilot, the plane then reached to runway only to turn back because our pilot was "timed out." Afterwards there were NO adequate alternative flights for this Sunday flight with the only option initially offered being a ridiculous not one, but two days later with a Tuesday flight back. As a result of having to return to work as a front-line worker and the inadequate business practices with AA, I then had to buy an expensive one-way return flight with Southwest for over $400. I then followed all steps to request a refund from AA and was refunded an inadequate amount that was not even half the original flight cost and far less than the return flight I was forced to purchase. I am writing to once again request a full refund on this horrible flight experience given involuntary cancellations due to staffing issues, inadequate alternative flights, and multi-hour delays. American Airlines you greatly need to step it up, the service has been truly terrible. I have advised many to NOT fly American Airlines ever and have also expressed this dissatisfaction on social media. My attempts to reach customer service have been abysmal with 4+ hour delays or scheduled calls only available at 10:30pm (where the representative then says the team I need to talk with is only available at 8am-12pm)." read more

I think AA is quite good. Our return flight from Barcelona to Chicago was canceled due to an incident at the airport. The Airline provided excellent accommodation at Hilton hotel and later refunded all additional costs that we had to pay. One less star, because of meal quality out of Chicago.
