DONT FLY AMERICAN WITH A PET!!!! As a matter of fact, don't fly American at all! The Chicago Ohare gate agent tried to make me check in my puppy carrier as luggage even though I paid $125.00 for pet travel. Ultra modern plane on the outbound flight to Puerto Rico- Each seat was equipped with a remote control, full entertainment screen for each passenger, and movies that were still in theaters! Really fantastic. After two movies-the plane arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico! Yea! Food was a brie omlette with turkey sausage, chobani yogurt, fresh fruit, and a bagel with butter and jam. I also asked for the cheese plate to take with me to enjoy later after arrival and it had to be one of the BEST cheese plates ever with grapes, gourmet chocolate square, crackers, cheddar, harvarti with dill, gouda, and brie cheeses. Captain and crew were helpful as the plane had maintenance problems and it took 45 minutes to get off the ground-but passengers were kept up-to-date with announcements. The pilot also detailed the flight route which was nice. FYI-staff announcements were in English AND Spanish and flight crew thanked people on board who were going to help with the disaster relief! read more

American Airlines announced we were delayed because we were waiting for our plane to come from its hangar and waiting for crew from a different flight that just arrived. Crew is here. Now we were told plane is being looked at in hangar. Plane was supposed to take off two hours ago.....One would think the plane was being looked at before now. Apparently crew got an insider announcement that the customers have not. Crew stepped up to counter briefly, chatted with attendant and all walked away. LIARS! Who holds airlines accountable? Flights are leaving left and right and mine is now 2 hours delayed with no information as to when it has been rescheduled. NEVER AGAIN!!! I am going back to United!!! My flight was cancelled!!! I immediately received an email telling me I am rebooked for the next morning at 5:00 am with a connection when I WAS on a direct non stop. My husband booked me on a flight a few hours later via Dallas rather than accepting what AA wanted to put me on. When I got up to the help desk counter that was really of no help was told because my husband booked my flight it is on our own dime but if they would have booked it in exchange for canceling my flight we wouldn't have paid. I was told we couldn't get credited. I had been waiting in the customer service line for over an hour wondering if I could even stay in it to check on my bag and still make my 3:15 flight. They had 4 representatives and 2 left while the line had 30 + people waiting. AA was working the help desk with 2 attendants while the bay across the isle from us had 2 attendants working the counter that were coffee clutching. (And we couldn't go to a different counter for help) After waiting for over an hour in the customer service line, when it was my turn I asked about getting a reimbursement. I was told the customer service desk at the airport can't handle that kind of customer service and I have to go "on line"!!! My husband called and was told the same nonsense...because he booked me the flight it is on our own dime. If I waited at the mercy of American Airlines that wasn't transparent and wasn't communicating we wouldn't have been charged for my flight. It doesn't make sense. I am recovering from foot surgery and it was a big deal that I decided to take this trip. I booked a direct non stop and followed AA's directions to get to the airport two hours before my flight. Transparency is the least of what is expected of a business. When a glitch does occur a fair exchange and fair refund policy is expected. I saw what appeared to be a supervisor walking around my bay but with my foot that is healing from surgery did not have the time nor strength to run up to him to speak. I am disappointed at the lack of professionalism by American Airlines. My experience is not how loyalty is built. read more

on my connecting flights from aruba to chicago there were issues with both flights when it came to their arrival and departure. both departures consisted of delays due to numerous issues, some of which being there wasn't an airplane and the tires were not of the appropriate air level. in addition, on both arrivals there was a delay on arriving at the gates due to surrounding AMERICAN AIRLINE PLANES being unable to start their engines and proceed out of the airplane's path to pull into its gate. read more

The American flagship lounge in Chicago is for sure a step up in American Airlines admirals clubs. Though you have to be flying international to get invited into this lounge. There is plenty of seating in the flagship from dining area to relaxing recline style seats. The food served is good and they have a big selection from hot food to sushi rolls. They have a nice wine selection and even have some good cold sake offerings. Now in my travels around the world the lounge is still way off what some of the other clubs worldwide offer but this is still a nice lounge to relax, eat and drink in before a long flight. read more

Finally. It's about time American airlines had an appropriate club for international Business Class passengers. At last. Although not perfect, it's much better than the Admiral's Club. Better food, broader variety of alcoholic drinks and certainly improved service. Thank you. read more

Terrible airline. Delays after delays, been sitting here for 2 hours already and they haven't found the source of their issue. Maintenance issues one after the other and still don't know what's going on. Plane was sitting at O'Hare for a day covered in snow and they realized this right before we were supposed to fly. They de-iced the plane only to find another maintenance issue. Never flying this crap hole of an airline ever in my life again. Updat: wowwwwww, waited 3 hours plus only for them to tell us they can't fix the issue and we were rebooked for a flight the next morning. Was able to hop on the phone right away to rebook my next morning flight to even earlier instead of waiting in line to do so. Fingers crossed that tomorrow will be better and we can get home safely. read more

WAY beyond a doubt, the worst airline I have flown since I can't remember when. Rude, unhelpful gate personnel (O'Hare International has some real winners there at the gates) and these people have a could-care-less attitude that resonates deep from within their being. If having issues with them, I recommend going two levels above the person you are dealing with to get anything done (that is what we had to do). having flown four different airlines this year, this one takes first for being the worst with seats being the most uncomfortable, dirty aircraft cabins, terrible service on the aircraft and gates (need I mention gate personnel again?) and just overall experience. This airline is truly, in my opinion, a cross between a Jerry Springer episode (as another Yelper noticed as well) and a flying Greyhound bus. The last time I had an experience this bad was with US Airways. Wait, American BOUGHT them! read more

Terrible customer service. Cancelled flight an hour before take off. Customer service at Reagan Airport was atrocious. I am VERY upset with AA as a whole. I have flown for 4 years with my Service dog and have never had an issue with other airlines . The manager told me to call AA and request a refund sir I received my Service Id which I eventually did when the plan took off. I've just returned from Shanghai, had very spotty internet and no access to Yelp (oh China and their rules), so can you tell a girl is trying to catch up on all her Yelping??? I wanted to Yelp all these delicious places we ate at in Shanghai but alas it is impossible. Instead I will have to Yelp about my flight to and back. I've generally had great experience with AA and have been lucky to not have had to deal with the stuff people usually complain about (consistent delays, bad customer service, etc). So when AA awarded me with free Platinum Pro status this last month with incentive to earn it for another year if I hit a certain number of EQDs/EQMs, I jumped on the opportunity. My husband and I were looking for an end of the year vacay anyway, so the timing was happenstance and we immediately booked a trip to the motherland of our ancestors, China. We booked Flagship Business ORD-NRT-PVG on the way there and PVG-LAX-ORD on the way back (no direct flights from Chicago to Shanghai as of 2018). On the ORD-NRT leg we were on a 787-8, which has alternating rear-facing business class seats. I thought it would be weird flying backwards, but couldn't tell at all. The major disadvantage of these seats is the design -- because every other row is rear-facing, each pair is "attached" so you can feel every move the person in front of you makes. It's annoying when it's someone you don't know and you're trying to sleep. Luckily it was just my husband and I could yell at him and not feel bad. Just kidding. However the advantage with the rear-facing seats, your head is closer to window vs. closer to aisle so it feels more private, and is easier to sleep. Another advantage flying a Japan leg is they partner with Japan Airlines to serve JAL food, so the food was delicious! I've flown ANA and EVA Air before (Japanese and Taiwanese airlines) and the service is soooooo much better. AA service felt super brisk and rushed. But AA still has everyone beat with their inflight entertainment system. They always have the best options, the newest movies and shows. Things I watched on the way there and back: Ad Astra, The Hustle, Isn't It Romantic, Killing Eve Season 2, Longshot, A Rainy Day in New York, Toy Story 4...and more! On the PVG to LAX leg coming back, we flew on a 787-9, and the seat layout is significantly better. All seats face forward, the seats are more comfortable for some reason, and you have more storage. I mean don't get me wrong, flying business class is nice enough as it is, but if you have a choice, pick the 787-9. Also I swear it helped my jet lag on the way back (better cabin air pressure??) whereas my jet lag is usually way worse on the way back. The food was mediocre on the way back, we always pre-order in case they run out, which they did on the way back (they had some sort of Chinese short rib). The bedding is nice, you get a Casper blanket and pillow and they are both very fluffy for airline standards, as well as slippers (my shoes come straight off on a long flight because of swelling, and slippers are absolutely appreciated and mandatory for those airplane bathroom visits). Amenity kit has all the necessities like toothbrush, toothpaste, blindfold, socks. And they offer Bang and Olufsen noise cancelling headphones -- they are great! Just unfortunate they always collect them an hour or so before landing. Overall a great flight experience, makes a 12 hour flight so much more bearable. Weird Note: this is probably obvious but hold on to your phones during takeoff and landing. There are small crevices in the seats where your thin phones can slide into. Happened to me and another guy on my flight and we had to get maintenance to help fish them out. I'm such a dum dum. read more

We have always used American Airlines every trip. Recently had a flight credit that they said over the phone expired end of year. Tried to use it it expired 3 days ago. I asked if they could extend it the 3 days so we could use it and they said they would not. Definitely would not fly with them again. Customer service goes a long way. Our last trip we also left AirPods by our seat. They closed the door and said they would call out to the desk for them to get them. We contacted them afterward landing and they said they did not have them. But when we landed back at that airport we had a notification they were in that location of the airport. So we contacted them again and they said they did not have them even though they were at that location. Someone obviously found them! read more

AA has data that confirms my purchase of two (2) round trip, first class, flights from Chicago to Las Vegas; yet, allowed no credit for said flights. All that can be said in support of our flights was, they were on time. Our flight home had incredibly sketchy departure , as well as landing. My teeth chattered. What's the "advantage"? LOL "First Class" was in name -and price-only. The food was reminiscent of something offered from a vending machine, the beer was warm, and the service was not. I highly recommend using the AA phone app throughout your travel. I give AA four stars because I got where I was going with all my property intact and in a timely manner. I needed to fly to Florida after my mom passed so I could pick up my dad to bring him back to Illinois for the summer. Because of the timing, and also that I needed to get to Sarasota, American had the best options, which included a plane change in Charlotte, NC. The rate was fair at best, even purchasing the tickets almost 3 weeks in advance. This was consistent with other carriers, and figured the pricing was based on the extra costs associated with COVID-19 precautions. This ticket should have been at least $100 less, given the time of travel, based on previous experience for a Friday, May 29 flight. The gate staff in both Chicago and Charlotte were very good! Especially the Charlotte crew, which had to deal with both weather and mechanical delays. Especially one taller male with a mustache (ya... didn't get his name.) was exceptionally helpful! If you fly out of Charlotte, I hope you get this guy to help you out. Cabin and flight crews were solid and made sure people were well served both with a comfortable flight (cautioning accurately of turbulence, etc...) and that people had what they needed as far as stowing items or settling in to seats. The one negative is that we were a very full flight! Somehow, I had one of the only seats on the plane without a passenger in the center seat next to me! How lucky was that?! The woman behind me, however, for all her complaining about being close to others could at least wear her mask to cover mouth. She was fine once we departed, but reeeeealy wanted to get some space until then. Again, cabin crew did a great job helping her feel comfortable. I hope the airlines are able to reign in costs, and also make space for passengers. I know these are in tension, but until this COVID threat lessens, it could make for tense travel. To those who are flying, patience and courtesy are your most admired traits right now! Be respectful of space around others, wear a mask which is to protect others more than yourself, and be patient if things get a little tight. Fortunately, I won't have to fly again until the end of the summer when I bring my dad home again. ;-) read more

Aside from the tight quarters, the broken window shade (it was a little bright), and the guy next to me who had a skin disorder and arm rash that literally missed my jacket every single time he moved an inch, my flight was fantastic! I had the chance to chat it up with one of them while waiting for the bathroom, and it was obvious how much he loved his job. Free snacks. From where I'm sitting in the lowest level of Coach (they number the zones by how much you paid so everyone can know that I'm cheap and that's why I deserve the middle seat in the area designed for even a skinny toddler to feel claustrophobic) they've got nothing on the discount airlines like Frontier any more. Have to pay extra to get assigned a seat, get on board when there's still overhead space available, for any luggage...so they really don't get a star for good prices because I'm paying in discomfort. I'm pretty sure charging for breathing air and water and maybe even talking to a flight attendant is coming. Every flight was delayed, every connection was fraught with anxiety, there's not much to recommend American nowadays which is such a shame for me, remembering the high quality that once marked this venerable name. The space is easily five times larger than the old space. There are a ton of chairs, tables and a few nice quiet areas to relax. There are many tables near the expanded food area and it's a welcome improvement. Two tables of food options, which are replenished frequently, along with a dessert area and separate wine/mixed drinks/beer/soda. It can get very crowded at times, but generally speaking it's only for a short time when several flights are due to depart in quick succession. For reasons I won't get into here, I've been here for about six hours and I've seen it go from very noisy/crowded to a relaxed, quiet and comfortable aura. The staff here are very friendly and I really have appreciated their help whilst awaiting updates on a very delayed flight. They have added a ton of power ports and even support the inductive charging standard, "Qi" for your new iPhone or Android devices. There are also several showers now, which didn't exist at the old Flagship Lounge. The bathrooms can be a bit busy. Unless they are hiding some, there's only one area in the middle to use. All in all, a vast improvement from before and kudos to American for making this much needed update. Tip: you dont have to take the elevator down if you have a backpack or are willing to carry your luggage. There are stairs on each end and one in the middle which will take you back to the terminal. First off, all of the employees that I encountered on my trip to and from the John Wayne, that's right I said John Wayne pilgrim, airport were very nice. Then why only 3 stars?? Because once again, I cannot stand it when any airline tries to nickel and dime you for anything they can squeeze out of you. They made me pay for my one checked in suit case, to and from, then attempted to get me to pay for the privilege of picking out my seat ahead of time!?#?! They are just as bad as United Airlines with stupid multilevels of passenger flying. I guess people are just kind of used to being treated in this manner. Well, it still doesn't make it right. DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE Well.....sh*t. I've flown 'AA' ('assholes anonymous') probably close to 30 times in my life. Throw in my dad's travel experience and we're talking about thousands of flight segments in total, but for now we'll focus on MY times with these chuckle f*cks, specifically my most recent trip to our great nation's capitol. I flew to Orange County last December and everything was hunky-dory. I flew to NYC last May and most things were peachy-keen. Today I flew to Washington D.C. and nearly everything was hot garbage from top to bottom. It began with check-in and continued onto the flight itself. For starters, my printed ticket indicated gate 'H8'. Easy enough to remember, because I freaking H8 air travel sometimes. *email notification pops up : your gate has been changed to: K20.* Duhhh okay, let's see what the 'departures' display screens say. 'H11A'. WELL GODDAMN. Turns out the official email alert was wrong, as was my official printed ticket. That's cool. My stretch of bad luck persisted, as the aircraft for flight AA1079 was taken out-of-service. Our flight was delayed an hour while we waited for a properly-working, incoming plane to arrive. Electrical outlets at the gate didn't work, so it became a contest of finding the working power strip and doing so before all the other travelers found it. Wi-Fi didn't work either, although that could've been on my end. *TL;DR* American Airlines is still my preferred carrier. Spirit seems sketchy, U.S. Airways is just plain weird, and I don't care for United's "beat first, ask questions later" policy, so that pretty much leaves AA. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, eh? OH WELL! At least I didn't get dragged off the plane. read more

American Airlines has some dispicable policies. I booked a flight from Houston to Toronto with a layover in Chicago. My flight from Chicago to Toronto was supposed to leave at 3 p.m. We were supposed to start boarding at 2:30 p.m. My flight into Chicago landed at 2:10 p.m. after which I hauled a** to get to my gate. I arrived there at 2:25 p.m. and waited for them to start boarding. At around 2:35 p.m. the agent at the counter said that they were waiting on a crew member to start boarding, that she was flying in to gate L 10, and would come right over (we were at gate L 8). After about 10-15 minutes we got another update that the crew member had landed and was on her way over. At around 3:10 p.m. we started boarding and was on the plane waiting to leave by 3:30 p.m. The pilot announced that there would be a bit of delay because there was a plane in front of us. So we waited. After about 20 minutes, he announced that the storm that they were trying to avoid had hit Toronto so we couldn't leave. We were going to turn back and deplane, that the delay would be about 4 hours. Then when we deplaned, they cancelled the flight. I called the rebooking number to book another flight and they put me on the 11:52 a.m. flight the next morning. Tried to get a hotel voucher and the agent says to me that in the system, the reason for the booking was as a result of weather, so no vouchers were being offered. I countered that had we not waited on that crew member and left at 3 p.m. as originally scheduled, we would've missed the storm. He said that in the system it says weather and there's nothing he could do. American airlines. You need to do better. read more

You know it's not good when they just announced we are giving free sacks away ten minutes after they said we won't have an announcement until 10:48 I could tell the agents at the counter were lying because in two different lines one agent said it was maintenance priblem and the other said they just got out of custom and they are doing a precheck, that takes 45 minutes.
