We flew American twice in the last year, then deleted the app. Our first flight was uneventful, but on arrival at DFW, we ran into multiple people who had been screwed over by last minute gate changes,frequently between different terminals. Our next flight was a cross country trip with minimal cabin service. We waited for hours while our connecting flight was repeatedly delayed until a line of thunderstorms rolled in and the flight was cancelled. We arrived at the gate 2 hours early and we waited 1 hour and 45 mins and 15 mins until we board we hear this flight is switching to gate S7 we run to that gate and then they said oh we never said that you now have to go back 2 mins before the gate is closing we get there the plane left... WORST OF ALL WAS ALEJANDRO there was a person feeling sick and need to go home and get off and he said NO TURNING BACK NOW not only causing us to not get on but also causing that man to feel even more sick... TL;DR Staff was rude and not helpful for a simple question. It was my first time landing at SEA and I was stuck in my Southwest flight for nearly an hour. By the time we got out at nearly 11pm, I did not know where the baggage return general area was. American Airlines was on the way to the baggage return, so I simply asked "where is the baggage return?" Immediately the associate looked at me and snapped "What flight did you come off of?" I said Southwest and she said, "I'm not answering any questions since you did not fly with us." She should have told me the general direction for baggage return was down the path I was walking. read more

Just an overall bad trip, both coming and going. Besides the self-important flight attendant/formerly stewardesses, one particularly annoying event was being seated with a broken screen to look at for the entire 5 hour flight. Fortunately I had a book to read so I was able to ignore it for the most part. I thought I would be able to avoid low-quality amenities and personnel by flying a "major" airline like American, but would probably have been better off with a discount brand like Southwest, Frontier or Spirit. I arrived at SEA well in advance of my scheduled afternoon flight out of this airport, and went to the American Airlines check-in counter to ask if they could put me on an earlier set of flights so I could get home to see my family earlier than scheduled. She took a look at my electronic boarding pass and my passport and booked me on an earlier set of flights, but I'd need to be on standby for both. She explained if the standby flights were full, I'd just take my originally scheduled (later) flights, as both were still ticketed. As luck turned out, there were 3 no-shows for the flight out of SEA, most likely due to a nearly last-minute gate change. They offered me one of those seats after everyone else had boarded and they went on the plane to do a manual head count. I was a bit rushed when they finally called my name and they never gave me a boarding pass for the second leg of my journey, but at least I made it onboard and was seated on the earlier flight. After that, everything was pretty standard on the actual flight and we even got to the arrival city about 20 minutes earlier than scheduled. read more

Those individuals at the check in desk at aa where they are able to take your luggage are trash they "tried" to have a professional mannerism, but failed poorly, the lady that assisted us behind the desk the that told us the policy, that was helping us had to make sure the supervisor wasn't going to help us. She thought she was slick pacing back to him whisper to him. First of all, I did NOT FIND a thing about accompanied minor not being able to have their parents with them til they safely board at the gate, news to me! (The adult accompanying them was there grandmother). Mind you it was my kids very first time flying anywhere, they were so anxious as is. TSA was ok with letting us in, but could not without a pass from AA desk. So tsa send us back to get one but we were denied for the fact my kids were accompanied... dumb af! We went back to tsa, they then again sent us to talk to the supervisor... supervisor had already got a whisperer in his ear and told us that if your sending your kids with their grandma you must trust her. Wtf does that have to do with making sure my kids board safely or the fact my kids were scared, or that they've never been away from us, or as a parent your making that choice for us booking with you or any stupid company with a policy as such. I'm the mother and I can't be there for my children?!... we planned our goodbyes trying to keep things as positive as possible, they were already scared...and that was taken away from us at security due to aa "policy" my kids were distraught and it was so embarrassing for us, as my kids (5/8) began crying due to the confusion and having to abruptly say goodbye... we are parent not some random relative, I had paper work and my identity prepared. Not to be dramatic but what if that was my last time with them? But AA doesn't want to give you the decision to watch your little ones load? It was the worst goodbye. read more

We had to travel across the country at the last minute with six people (2 small children) due to a sudden death in our family. While we most often use Alaska Airlines, we flew on American last night due to a significantly lower price than Alaska. Due to difficulty downloading one boarding pass, we had to check in at the American desk. The American clerk was extremely helpful (we had kids' car seats, etc) and she got us checked in promptly. The plane (an A321neo) was clean and comfortable; the attendants was professional and helpful. Luggage arrived promptly in Seattle. What an airline should be in my view. We'll be flying American more often for sure. read more

STOLEN ITEMS!!!! My husband is in the military and we were both traveling back home for a funeral. After the flight, we noticed that our bag was looked through and multiple items had been stolen, including, both of our perfumes/cologne that we got each other for our wedding. They were not only sentimental, but also costs more than $200 each. The other bags we had in the suitcase were dumped out and all pockets were unzipped!! All of our toiletries were emptied into our suitcase and some were even broken when they weren't before. There was no tag or paper saying that that our items had been gone through by TSA. There is APPARENTLY nothing they can do as our bag was never "delayed or damaged". read more

I flew AA first class from the mainland US to Hawaii, and had a good experience. The seats were comfortable with lots of room to spread out, and the staff were all very friendly! My only qualm was that I was unaware the seats do not recline flat at the time of booking - a few other airlines have this feature in business class but AA did not with their first class seats. For a long flight over the ocean, a fully reclinable seat would have been nice, but, not a dealbreaker. Our luggage arrived just fine with no delays, and our family would fly AA again. With any company - there are good people who work for organizations who as a whole just stink. I feel for those who work for American - because the corporate culture and how they approach the airline business and the treatment of cattle - excuse me - customers - is poor. The only time I fly American is when I'm forced to for work - other than that - I avoid it. The whole attitude is as a passenger you are an inconvenience and we will put up with you because you give us money. Customer service/care is lacking and do you really need 9 different boarding groups? Would not use this airline again. First and last time. AA your seats are too freaking small and too close to the rows in front/behind of each other. Why do you charge $30 for one piece of luggage to be brought on the plane? I have a disability (short-term) and can't move quickly or carry heavy things. Asked for help getting my suitcase onto the weight platform at check-in and got a hard stare back. Had to struggle and start spasming terribly before the guy got the picture and did it for me. Shouldn't have had to do that. My friends bought my tickets to go see them. I have always heard, in business and from the majority of people, to not use AA. I wish I could give zero stars! I will never fly this airline again. On October 14 we were scheduled to take a flight out of Knoxville Tennessee to Charlotte North Carolina and catch a connecting flight to Seattle that evening. The flight out of Knoxville was delayed four times so we missed our connecting flight. They scheduled us for the next morning out of Charlotte but we lost our first class seats. We finally left Knoxville four hours late and arrived in Charlotte around 11 PM. American airlines refused to give the passengers their luggage in Charlotte and said it would be routed to the final destination. There was a throng of people in baggage claim upset about not being able to get their luggage for the night. There were passengers stranded in Charlotte and wanted the car seats released out of luggage as they could not leave the airport with kids without a car seat. They gave hotel vouchers to those of us that were stuck there overnight but there were no hotel rooms available - we had called about 10 or 12 of them around the airport. American Airlines would not authorize other hotels that were more expensive to be honored. I was just told "I am sorry" by Customer Service. I spent $389 to have a bed to sleep in for five hours - the option would have been to sit on a metal bench for that length of time. We were given meal vouchers for the airport but everything closed at 7 PM. We had not eaten dinner because we thought we would have our dinner on our flight in first class to Seattle. My sister and I are in our late 60s and not young people. I understand that there can be unexpected mechanical issues and also issues with crew at times. American Airlines desperately needs to improve procedures in managing passengers when there are significant delays. read more

This review focuses on AA's narrow body 3-class Transcon aircraft, these only fly from BOS-LAX, JFK-SFO/LAX, and some east-west coast flights at these airports only. AA only have 17 of these A321. Flew out of BOS, nice lounge, gate area and boarded on time. Quick to board when the aircraft only seats 102. When boarding seeing the 1-1 first was different, your thinking wide body but only an aisle, walked through another gallery/lav area and found my seat in a 2-2 business class seat. You have so much space for seat storage. Settled in and flight attendant offering juice, water and sparkling wine. Nice pre-departure drink, appears first had the same service, enjoyed while I read the service menu and food options. Settled in pushed back and on time departure and did arrive a little early too. Seat took a little adjustment to find the right position, and these seats to lay flat. Flight service, AA seems to have a little extra on domestic first-business class, but these transcons are serve more like an international flight. It was breakfast time, had a nice fruit, entrée and cheese courses, it was good and hot, remember at 30k ft. Food tastes blander. Attempted to use the inflight entertainment system in the seat, difficult to use, very sensitive remote and clunky. Finally able to put up the flight maps and used my iPad to access the WiFi system. The AA entertainment system has good and current offerings and caught up on some films wanting to watch. You can watch a commercial and get 30 minutes of free internet access, nice to check and reply to emails. Again cannot say enough about AA flight attendants and service, about the best on domestic air, about the last 1.5 snacks and fresh baked cookies come around along with fresh cocktails too. Arrived to LAX, being a Trancon flight with First or Business ticket you have access to that lounge, go grab a bite, drink or use the bathroom when arriving. read more

I have been on hold three times for up to two hours trying to check-in for an international. I used their VeriFLY app and everything was completed and approved but AA mobile app can't confirm the approval from its own vendor. Now we have to leave for the airport several hours early to make sure we can fly. As a frequent business flyer I would not recommend AA. read more

This was quite personal and difficult for me to write about, but I decided to speak up. Long story short, an AA desk employee at seatac violated ADA and made this a painful, humiliating experience, while screaming at me for sitting. I had a spine injury which prevented me from walking (I'm better now, thanks). I had requested wheelchair assistance in advance, and was told they'd meet me at the curb because I couldn't walk. I was flying to see my doctor. When the curbside assistance refused me (they "weren't doing it today"), I enlisted help from my significant other, who carried me to the ticketing desk. I told the lady behind the desk that I needed to sit down or get a wheelchair. She snapped that there was no wheelchair reservation (why even give a confirmation number then, AA? But okay, things happen) and that I'd have to lift my luggage to the scale to check it in. I politely explained that i was in a great deal of pain just standing and putting all my weight on the counter, and that I needed to sit or get a wheelchair, and if she'd be so kind to get someone to help me. (My significant other had to go back to the car, which he was forced to have illegally taxii'd, thanks American airlines). The lady asked, "what's wrong with you", and I replied, again, I can't walk. More back and forth and her repeating, "You're gonna have to lift your luggage ma'am!!!" At this point, I'd been standing for much longer than was possible for me, so I was close to tears. I reminded her that I require assistance, but also that I'd be sitting now. She proceeded to yell at me from behind the desk as I hobbled and limped over to a seat. She escalated and yelled at me for not lifting my luggage on to the scale. For the 20th time. A seatac worker helped me with my bags, and seeing my pain, ordered a wheelchair that the AA lady would not. This experience is honestly shocking beyond words. Disabled people are not your emotional punching bags, American Airlines. This is far below the bare minimum standards to human decency and treating people with a sliver of dignity. I get it when people have bad days, but not when you're just plain evil and want to maliciously humiliate a younger looking person for a disability. Get it together AA. I have a hundred thousand miles that I sorely wish I could transfer. Protip: if you want to break up with an airline, book a flight on their website for a partner airline. read more

Booked flight for my fiancée and myself to head back home after Christmas, we were placed in different rows and when we dropped our bag we were told to wait until the ticket counter opened at the gate and talk to the gate agent about changing seats. As soon as a body appeared at the gate, I preceded to walk towards the desk where a younger woman literally ran in front of me. When it was my turn to talk to the agent who was extremely rude and unhelpful, I was told there were no more seats together as the woman in front of me had just gotten the last two seats together. The agent was so rude. She said I could wait until the cutoff for check in and if I wouldn't let her speak, she would just let me have my boarding passes back and deal with it. Flights scheduled months in advance. First flight was changed to take off 7 hours earlier, so we'll have to leave home at 2a. Our seats were changed so no one was sitting together. Adjoining seats were available, so we fixed it and have to deal with the time difference. Return flight was changed weeks later, adding an over 11hr delay (overnight) in Texas. Contacted the airline (which took several hours.). It's like a fortified wall to hit your head against. No alternative that isn't over 10 additional hours travel time. To shave off that one hour required we'd fly even further away - adding a stop in FL, while still going through TX, layovers throughout. No alternatives the day before or after. No hotel nearby without paying full price out of pocket. No partnerships with other airlines. No discounts or waived fees. Literally just do not care about customer experience in the slightest. It's nerve-racking enough traveling with every going on right now. But best case scenarios of everything going right from here is still appalling. And at this rate, not trusted in the slightest. If there is ANY other option, do not use American. read more

This was not a good experience. I purchased a flight that left later than I had intended (the mobile app was difficult to use and I assumed I'd be able to resolve the issue by speaking with a person), and tried to change it to the correct one at the airport (to a flight departing from the same gate, slightly earlier which was not at full capacity). I explained my situation to the desk agent and later to a CSR on AA's hotline, and was told that they couldn't help change the flight but I was free to buy a ticket for $210 for the earlier flight if i wanted. What? How does that seem reasonable at all? I understand that flights fill up, but if there are still seats available (AA would be happy to sell me one) I don't understand what is to be gained by being unhelpful as a policy. Booooo! Blah! Booked American airline via Expedia on 2/28/19 for SEA to JFK/5.5 hrs direct flight and on 3/24/19, an email indicates new schedule with a much later flight, layover and getting into NYC past midnight for our April 2019 flight. Arriving in NYC with two young kids is not my idea of starting our spring break off on the right foot. We would've had a near 13 hr flight from Seattle to New York. This would've completely threw our AirBnB out of order as well! When I called American Airlines they offered me a flight the day before. I asked them if they're going to pay for a night of hotel? American Air: No, we can't do that. Well, I dialed Expedia right away and they took care of everything, even though it took over 4 hours to alter our flight plans with Expedia Corporate. Nonetheless, as exhausting as it was trying to find new flights for four passengers, we're still on our way with a new direct flight on Alaska Air. On my shit list: Delta Air & American Airline!!! Had an unbelievably awful experience with American, and no, this has nothing to do with COVID, fly business with Alaska and Delta weekly for 8 months now and have never had this problem. Was supposed to take off Monday, flight was cancelled 2 hours before flight pushed to Tuesday, 21 hours later. This left us at an airport in a foreign country. Had to be taken to a hotel American Airlines covered. Because the whole flight needed a room, check in at the hotel took nearly 3 hours. Arrived next day, front desk gave us wrong information, both gate and time for take off were wrong. Connection once in the states delayed 2 hours on top of this. Cherry on top - baggage was delayed by 1 hour after the final connection. I don't ever write reviews, but truly felt compelled to do so to warn others. Over all of the airlines I tend to always migrate towards American. I do think their customer service is top notch but have a couple of things to say. The extra large duffle bags and coats that people are storing in the overheads that take up extra space need to be squished. The aisle seat has the smallest of the storage space in front of it so take heed, I have trouble with stuffing my backpack there now. Additionally in recent months I have been travelling a bit more. Three of the five times, my front monitor does not work. No TV, no map, no nada. Careful if you are counting on this to entertain you during the flight. The days of getting a free movie is long gone as well. They charge like $7 for it now if the monitor is working. They do a great job in getting the airplane loaded and offloaded which I do appreciate, just the aisle seat thing and that monitor needs to be reviewed. read more

Apart from Alaska Airlines when I'm flying one of their routes, I pretty much no longer have any brand loyalty to airlines...whatever Expedia says is the cheapest is what I'm going to fly, hence I recently found myself back on American Airlines, this time to go from Seattle to Charlotte and back. I may now officially have "brand disloyalty" to American Airlines. I have no data to prove it, but my quasi-reliable intuition tells me that AA jets are more cramped than other carriers, and that their seats have not been replaced since the 1980s. The consequence of flying across the country in a cramped seat that has already hosted tens of thousands of big ol' fat asses is that I got off the plane feeling like an arthritic ape with a broken tailbone. The other thing that really chaps me about AA is that I think...and again, this is intuition, not data-based...I think they are jerks to a much greater extent than other airlines as far as trying to gouge you to pay quite a bit more money to sit in a "preferred seat." On the Seattle-Charlotte leg, which was a red-eye, I got stuck with a middle seat, and my options for getting some other seat were all going to cost between $40 and $80...I suppose I could have shelled out a bit more money, but in the end that money would have been part of the CEO's zillion-dollar Christmas bonus and I would have disembarked feeling like an only slightly less-arthritic ape, still with a broken tailbone. All that said, kudos to the nice flight attendants, and to the artist who designed the in-flight safety manual...the toddler in the water landing section is hilarious. read more

The crew is very friendly. However the ticket is expensive and the company charges everything. This is based on my experience with AA for Seattle - Chicago coach class. Though I booked almost two months in advance, the summer tickets are still pretty expensive if you don't want to fly midnight. Since I have a kid and a senior with me, the red eye is not an option. So, $500 for each person with more reasonable hours. And here is the service list that they charge money on the flight, in addition to the tickets. - Food. Though the flight is 4 hours, which definitely covers meal time, there is still no free food. But every flight doing it now for domestic flight, I guess. - TV. If you want to watch some TV on the flight, swipe your card. - $5 for the headset. And for a 4 hr flight, even when it departs at 7am and everyone taking a nap, the flight does not provide any blanket. I'd say this is very cheap. Is it that expensive to provide blanket for long flights? The service was OK. All the crew staff were very friendly and helpful. The AA checkin counter at Sea-Tac is quite confusing. Since its screen says 'Welcome Service Man', many customers thought it's for military service only. Even when I tried it, I could not find the option to type in the e-ticket number instead of bar code scan. I will sure try to avoid AA in the future. read more

I will not be flying with American Airlines again. Our flight to LAX from Seatac was delayed over 7 hours causing us to miss a special birthday for my 10 year old daughter. I could only take a short amount of time off work so we had purchased 2 days worth of park passes from Friday 2/14-Sunday 2/15. The rental car, hotel stay and park passes that were purchased were completely unusable for one of the 2 days making for a short trip. The staff at the service desk (Kat) was very rude,and insensitive only offering us meal vouchers for the inconvenience. My out of pocket expenses lost in this matter were over $700.00. I don't think 2 $12 dollar meal vouchers is a worthy compensation for our lost time and money cutting our trip short, and providing terrible customer service read more

I normally will not fly American Airlines and I've never had a reason other than I prefer Southwest or Alaska. Over the past few months I've had to fly American more than I would like. It seems that every flight has experienced since kind of delay. Every flight either left late or arrived and had to sit and wait for something. One flight was 30 plus minutes 20 feet away from the gate because the didn't have anyone to bring us in. We've flown on AA several times lately, and our experiences have been -- wait for it -- pretty decent. The most recent was a nonstop from Seattle to JFK that turned out pleasingly from start to finish. The check-in went smoothly, we got through TSA quickly (not the fault or blame of AA) and our fight was good and on time. The seats on the 737-800 were comfy, the food edible, the flight attendants uncommonly friendly and helpful. We arrived a little early, too, and our bags showed up without incident in the terminal. Bottom line: one of our better flights in recent years. Everyone enjoys slamming the airlines, who deserve it, but honestly this trip came off very nicely. Really. Which probably means we've used up all our luck for the rest of our flying lives. read more
