Well this is my first time visiting and it won't be my last. When a first walked in the door is was like heaven kicked me right in my nostrils and it only got better from there. The girl working was very knowledgeable about the menu and due to her help, I chose the Mini Meal Sampler. Let's just say, it is the best BBQ I have had in a long time. Very fun place with good BBQ. In the middle of farm land. Small restaurant and parking lot. Lots of wood for smoking with a tow-style commercial smoker outside in the parking lot. Place was busy today, Saturday at 6:00 pm. We waited in line at the counter and they were very fast to get our orders in and serve us the food as you would expect - on plastic cafeteria trays and in disposable foil containers with white bread on the side. I tasted every meat on the menu. My top two favorites were the charred seasoned chicken wings, and the brisket was tender and juicy. The wings were medal worthy. I liked the 3 sauce options they offered on the side; excellent mayo-based Alabama white sauce, a Kentucky dark with molasses and black pepper, and a slightly more traditional ketchup and vinegar based Memphis style sauce. The ribs were a little dry and not quite as smoky and tender as I was hoping. The pulled pork and chicken were good especially when dipped in the different sauces. The brisket tacos were topped with their house coleslaw which I liked a lot. Outstanding red skin potato salad. Casual place worth checking out. They also serve shakes and ice cream. No liquor. My recommendation would be brisket and chicken wings with potato salad. Hats off to the team for a very solid experience. read more

We tried this place a few weeks ago, Horrible! Ribs where like jerky! With each bite you literally had chunks pull off like dried meat! Chicken wings where not completely cooked! I sent a picture to owner and he got snotty claiming I don't know what I'm talking about! American Char is awesome! It's a great little restaurant out in the middle of Zeeland farmland area, and it has amazing barbeque! They always have a variety of BBQ sauces available, and they're always superb. Their cornbread, baked beans, and Mac and cheese are fantastic as well. They also change up their menu on certain days. For example, one day we went there for BBQ but they were doing tacos that day. This is not a complaint cause those tacos were damn delicious. For the record, they do homemade ice cream too. Although I haven't tried it yet, it sounds really good from reading the options. My minor complaints are that the meat can sometimes have an overwhelming smokiness that takes over the other flavors. And they won't do substitutions on combo meals, which for some reason all come with plain white bread. I'd much rather substitute for some cornbread! It's definitely worth the effort to get out to American Char. A great place with a friendly, rural charm and tasty BBQ with even better sides. Best BBQ place in Zeeland/Holland. read more

My go to's are wings, ribs, and brisket and my wife loves the pulled pork. Although everything taste good without sauce I always have to get at least one of each sauce because they are all so good! I always try out new BBQ joints when I travel for work and have been to a few famous places like Pecan Lounge (Dallas) and Mighty Quinn's (NYC) and I can truly say that Chef Len competes with the best and for what it's worth BEATS the best! read more

What a great find! True BBQ spot! Mac and cheese is legit like my grandma used to make with the high quality elbow noodles that don't get soggy (kind of a big deal to me). This place looks and smells fantastic, it is just the kind of place I would love. Being new to town, I was excited to try it the first chance I got. Unfortunately, after waiting in line 10 minutes, I was informed they can't guarantee anything doesn't have an allergen. My daughter has a severe egg allergy, and while she said, most things do not have egg in them, she couldn't guarantee they didn't. For me it is not worth the risk. While I am certain the food is wonderful, as it smelled fantastic! I wanted to let those in the allergy community know, this place is, unfortunately, not allergy friendly, and should be avoided. Our first time here. I had pulled pork sandwich which was large and good. It came with just a tiny bit of cole slaw. My husband had ribs and wings. Parts of the ribs were a little dry, but had a good flavor and wings were fantastic. There were 6 different BBQ sauces to choose from. And in his words, the cornbread was not to be missed. That's how I felt about the coleslaw. It was perfect. Mac 'n Cheese also creamy and good. Not to busy because Drenthe is pretty rural.
