I've gotten three tattoos at American Gypsy, and yesterday my wife, mother-in-law, and I all went in for some new ink. It was such a fun experience! Addi did my piece, and I'm always impressed with her professionalism. She squeezed me in on short notice, customized the rough sketch I brought in, and was patient with sizing and placement. Her lines are always clean, and she does it all with a smile. My wife and her mom got matching tattoos from Avery, who went above and beyond. She took the time to make sure the stencils were perfect and even stayed after closing to finish their pieces. They loved her personality, and the tattoos turned out beautifully--great lines and color. The owners, David and Shelbey, are wonderful. Heard numerous good things about this place for years. Decided to drive over an hour for their Friday the 13th event. Check into online queue at 6:30(wait was estimated an hour) told at 7:30 that it was our turn, get to the desk and the front girl says they canceled us and that was it. Wasted gas and time. I have never enjoyed gun style piercing locations (Claire's, icing, target) sadly for my first daughter up in the northeast that was our only option as many tattoo and piercing parlors would not work on infants. I am SO GLAD I found American Gypsy! My second is 6 months old and I knew I did not want to go through the trauma of piercing her ears at a Dr office with a gun. I arrived and everyone was super friendly. Working with infant piercings they actually pierce the lobes in tandem, which IS WICKED SMART! Not two ouchies but just ONE. I was able to calm my little one down in less than 30 seconds and we were done! The location is a bit far for me, but totally worth it. Our 6 year old daughter was begging to get her ears pierced for her birthday! So after the party, and after some research and reading lots of reviews for local tattoo/piercing studios near our home in Leander, we headed over to American Gypsy. I'm so glad we did! Many piercing studios in the greater Austin area are charging over $100 to pierce kids ears. At American Gypsy, we were only charged $20 including jewelry! After signing a brief consent form, we were welcomed in with no wait (as walk-ins). David and Shelby were kind and easy-going, and great with our daughter. It was FAST - we were in and out of there in less than 10 min! The piercing itself took only a couple of minutes, and they did both ears simultaneously, which was really nice. Our daughter said it didn't hurt when they did it, she only had a few moments where her ears were "stinging" a bit here and there, in the hours after having it done. On the way out, David talked a little bit about after-care with us, and we were pleasantly surprised to hear that it's much easier than the information we had read about online! Lastly, if you're thinking of getting your kid's ears pierced, read up on gun method vs needle method. Needle, which is what is always used at reputable tattoo/piercing studios, is definitely the way to go. Many thanks to David and Shelby at American Gypsy! I was going to take my kids to Claire's to get their ears pierced, and decided no I'll take them to a tatto shop instead. I live in Leander so I went to the closest one. When we got there everyone was real welcoming and polite which made me feel a little more at ease. We go back to the station, my son sits in the chair David and Shelby his wife both pierce at the same time, ok never seen that done before which was a big help. Then my daughter sits in my lap they pierce her ears, she screamed as to be expected. We go up to pay $20 for my son's ears with earrings, then I have to pay $40 for my daughter's didn't understand that one. We were told to just clean the piercing the first day with soap and water on a q-tip, leave it alone after that. When I was younger we got a ear piercing cleaning solution and were told to twist to prevent the earring from sticking during the healing process. Nowadays, I guess they just say soap and water and send you on your way. So that was in the beginning of December, I wanted to give the piercings more time to heal so we waited to change the earrings. I'm not sure what happened if the earrings were fake or what but, we went to take my son's earrings out and there was yellow pus/blood drainage coming from both ear holes. Not to mention, my daughter's had 1 ear that had a little pus not much. I just know I'm not very happy because, I gave them the benefit of the doubt just to be proven right. I am having to use saline solution on my son 3-4 times a day, along with warm compresses, ibuprofen for the swelling, and he's having to wait another couple of weeks to heal. I went ahead and put some real sterling silver earrings im my son's and daughter's ears and now we are continuing the hopefully healing process. I would not recommend this place for a piercing of any kind. I would like my money back, but I see that being more trouble than it's worth. read more

I decided to get my ears re-pierced after 45 years of clip-Ins. I had problems with my ears getting infected when I was younger and heard that a Tattoo Artist pierces them with a bigger hole. American Gypsy Tattoo was the closest to me so I chose them. And am I GLAD I went here. David and his Wife are the nicest people. David pierced my ears but before doing so, he explained everything so I would understand. It's been 12 days and my ears feel great! David suggested leaving the earrings in for a year, no use of alcohol and NO twisting of the earrings! (That was news to me, guess times change over 45 years ) David was working with a guy that wanted a tattoo when I arrived.
