From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. There are online native plant emporiums and one can surely find a few natives at the standard plant nurseries, however this place has the widest selection. And they only have native plants for sale. Upon entering you might not think you are in the right place. Most immediately you see soccer fields and public garden plots. Keep on going. You are about to discover one of the DMV's best kept secrets. There's a small tent where the sales are made and staff are available to direct you. You can borrow a wheelbarrow if you're buying a lot. The plants are arranged by letter and number labeled signs. There's a catalogue of sorts on their web page which will show you which row the plant you need is located in. The web page also has current prices. Right now quart pots are $8 each and gallon pots are $20 each for non members. One thing I will say is that it helps to research what the plant will look like when it's mature before purchasing. Most of the plants are quite small to start with but because they are native plants they do take off over time.
