The Museum is a relatively small building on the street (with exhibits primarily on one floor), with Wilson's birthplace in a home a few doors down. Despite the small size, the exhibits did a decent job of highlighting some of the positives (League of Nations, less dependence on tariffs for government income, workmen's compensation, among others) and negatives (the guy was, shall we say, not supportive of integration when it came to African Americans). We spent about an hour in the Museum, including a few minutes in the WWI trench exhibit in the basement. All very interesting, well presented, and easy to understand. The highlight of our time was the docent-led tour of the Wilson home. Although Wilson lived in the home only for his first 18 months, the docent told a number of stories about Wilson's parents, Wilson's life there and later and it was a fascinating almost-hour time touring the building, asking questions and hearing the history.

Since I'm a history buff, I have been meaning to visit this Presidential Library. It's not a large…read moremuseum but very informative. I recommend taking the guided tour of Wilson's boyhood home and then visiting the museum. It's located in a residential neighborhood next to Mary Baldwin college. The staff was very friendly and they have a well stocked gift shop. Plenty of parking. I really enjoyed the WWI exhibit down stairs and the President's automobile. I did learn quite a bit about post WWI and the woman's suffrage movement. If you enjoy Presidential history this is a good museum.

The guide goes over the history of the house and of Charlotte Spotts DeBaun Coffman, a local figure in the history of Staunton, who owned the home and lived there from 1901 to 1988. The Victorian era embellishments in the house are beautiful, with detailed ceilings, doors, floors, and stained glass. The furniture, decor, and odds and ends they've chosen make the house cozy and interesting. None of Charlotte's original furniture is in the house, but what's there now fits the style of her era, and most of it is based around the Victorian time frame. Don't forget to say hello to the duckling for me! You can tell that the owner and guide, Kevin, truly loves the house and is doing a wonderful job keeping a vital part of history alive. He treats Charlotte's memory with dignity and respect, and shows off the house with obvious pride. They also host special events like a Holiday Tea or a Murder Mystery night, which I'd love to attend some day. Tours are available on an appointment basis - if you plan on visiting the Woodrow Wilson House and Museum down the street, give them a call and see if a time slot is available. We paid $15 a person, which I never mind spending on something like this. If you'd like to visit Charlotte's grave, she and her family members (and both husbands!) are in the nearby beautiful and historic Thornrose Cemetery. Enter from Thornrose Ave and take a right; circle past the large mausoleum and the plots will be on your left. Look for the large "Spotts" stone - the markers are all right by the road.

From entrance to exit, it's looped red carpet walkway with cars and carriages on both sides. As I was walking through, I loved the collection of cars and carriages on display. The sections were split by decades starting from beginning of 19th century to the mid 70s. It was so amazing to see the older models and to visualize the evolution of car models from its old days. There were really well known models on display like Delaunay, Winston, Ford, Buick, Benz, Lincoln and Dodge. All car models were tip top clean. There were no staff members inside the museum. It was mostly self exploring. But there few of them available in the sweet shop near entrance and in the gift shop. The gift shop was a separate one from the big Luray cavern one, and they also had mostly different products in the shop.

The tour is self-guided, starting from old 19th-century coaches to mid 20th century luxury cars. No guides or staff, just a little path taking you on a tour through the years and getting to explore what there is. If you like antique cars or are a mechanic nerd, you'll love this place. It is pretty cool to see how the styles changed over the decades, especially with various Cadillac, Rolls-Royce, and Ford models. You can get through the whole museum in 10-20 minutes, depending on how quickly you move along. For the the variety of cars and the price of admission, it's worth checking out.

The staff are uber helpful and the lady I talked to took me through areas of the house to help me visualize the local history. The moment you step onto the grounds, you can almost feel May 15, 1864, unfolding around you. The fields are quiet now, but they hold the echo of the day the VMI Cadets -- boys, really -- marched into a real war and changed the course of the battle. The park is immaculately kept. Tips: Wear good shoes, explore the whole field, and take your time. Don't rush it. This isn't a battlefield you see -- it's one you feel. Bottom line: If you're a history buff, this battlefield isn't just worth visiting -- it's essential. It's intimate, haunting, and unforgettable. The New Market cadets left their mark on this field, and somehow, the field still leaves one on you.
