The Hannan Center is a great place for seniors to check out. My friend told me about the art…read moregallery. Once I check the center out, I found out about the art classes they offer. For a small fee of $9, I got 15 weeks of lessons. For that price I signed up for 2 classes. The people that work there are kind and the people in the classes are nice and supportive also. I have learned a lot about collages and have been in 2 of the art exhibitions. A great place for seniors to get involved in different activities. August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone is set in 1911, and is about a group of people searching...after emerging from the 300-year experience of slavery. While the community that Mr. Wilson created is about a very specific time and place for African Americans, he also shows that all of humanity wrestled with the same universal questions. Who am I? In the hip of Merriman and Warren Road. Really glad I accepted the Paint-n-Sip invite hosted by Laurel. I think we painted many iterations 'Lillie's in a Pond.' lol There's also 'Arting at the Farmhouse' painting events monthly. Pondering if you should come appreciate a bit of swish? Just so you know from door bell to entrance a good time and very welcoming. Deets....Room was large in size, well lit and with about six (6) tables in the Grand Parlor. Seats up to great elbow-room, persons to a table. EVEN an neighboring- annual Garden Show nearby. Looking for unique and living quarters - history find. An old friend of mine from high school volunteers here and invited me over in mid-November to see…read morethe museum since he was working that day. It was great to see a high school classmate I hadn't seen in 50 years and I really enjoyed the tour around the museum, which is actually an old farmhouse from the 1830's that has been converted to show the history of Garden City including many artifacts and photographs. If you enjoy history you would appreciate this place even if you aren't from the area. I know I enjoy visiting little museums in other towns that I am not from. Each town has its own interesting history. I'll see if I can find a link to the museum that describes it. There's also a gift shop with some fun things in it if you are looking for unique presents for anyone.

The village is pretty and somewhat interesting for what's there but it is very, very small. Its 12.5 acres houses a dozen points of interest. It's a quick and easy walk through and back as I took it all in within maybe 15 - 20 minutes. I would have spent more time there but unfortunately the buildings are only open on Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm when they have docents in attendance. I wouldn't tell you to go too to far out of your way here but if you happen to be driving nearby and you have a little spare time, by all means, stop in and take a look around. In a nutshell, Mill Race Historical Village is quaint but don't come here expecting a Greenfield Village experience. Admission is free to all by the way.

What an entertaining night out in Downtown Detroit! I was here last night for their performance of…read moreFlow (SO great!) and it was just awesome. The theatre is surprisingly large (I was told it seats 1200) and while the seats are old school and thus aren't the most comfy I still had a great time! The stage size is impressive and the set design was great, thrusting out into the audience which made the show feel really intimate. They are able to pull off lots of wonderful effects (lighting, fog, etc) which add to the impressive feel. The building itself has been around since the early 1900s and it shows, but not in a bad way. Lots of lovely wood touches and it's got a bit of a worn down look that I found really charming. We had tickets at will call and the process of picking them up was so quick it didn't matter that I was making my way to my seats with only a couple of minutes to spare. The ushers (who I believe are other WSU students) were really friendly when seating us, asking us questions about how we heard about the show, where we were from, etc. I've certainly been around my fair share of bitchy ushers and these folks made me feel welcome from the get go. The parking lot takes a bit of winding through the American Red Cross lot to get to but it's awesome because it's free and you can be sure your car is safe rather than parking it on the street and hoping for the best. The theatre is also close to a handful of great neighborhood restaurants so grabbing a bite to eat before or getting a cocktail after is easy peasy. Make a night of it! As I mentioned the show was wonderful (still open for two more days--go see it!) and the WSU students who fill the cast are crazy talented. Tickets are typically only 15 bucks and they do about 4 shows per year. As far as I'm concerned you can't ask for a better, more affordable night of consistently good theater in the Detroit area!

We were served before performance snacks, drinks, and tastly little sandwiches -- YUMMY! Large theatre with balcony as well but beware of the seat -- if you are a tall person, then you might want to seat at the end to get a little more leg room. Restrooms were very clean but make sure to come a little early because when collecting your tickets; there's only one person at the counter.
