The salesperson was friendly and helpful. However he failed to explain that the return policy he told us about did not apply to the mattress we ended up buying. So his mistake ended up costing us thousands for a mattress we don't like. We tried to appeal to management but it did no good. They say that because we signed the receipt with the fine print on the back that covered the return policy, we were screwed. They gave no consideration to the misleading information we got from the salesperson. DON'T SUPPORT AN UNSCRUPULOUS BUSINESS LIKE THIS! read more

How incredibly disappointing. After going through an entire scenario of the reasoning for a new bed, the bed didn't arrive. This caused more than $1000 in costs for a hotel room. In addition, they told me "the truck did arrive" - not at all true, then "they called you" - my response "What number because I didn't get a call" "oh, they don't have a number". So now you've lied to me twice and with a snide attitude and tone. But given they already had my money what could I do? He said something about a refund, but what good does that do? I recently had a really bad experience with Mattress Firm, from wrong shipment, couldn't get ahold of anyone in customer service after hours of waiting and multiple emails, demeaning sales person, long delays in shipment, etc. (To their credit, the gentlemen who delivered the mattress were the one positive with their professionalism and friendliness.) So when we needed to get a second mattress, I went to American Mattress in Evanston on Davis Street and worked with Brian there. The entire experience was like night and day. Brian was helpful and friendly and he was great about figuring out options. The mattress was delivered in days instead of weeks without complication and we love the mattress, which was less expensive but as or better quality than what we'd gotten at Mattress Firm. read more

Never having been to American Mattress, we called and Brian encouraged us to come in and then methodically guided us through the inventory after listening to our particular needs (including budget). I've waited several months to write this review because I didn't want to post something in anger. But I don't recommend American Mattress in Evanston. My experience fit the classic example of a bait and switch. I bought a mattress and electric adjustable bed frame during a sale in November. I dealt with the manager, Brian, who was friendly, helpful, and claimed to have a deep knowledge of the industry. I'd never owned an adjustable bed frame and chose the full size because I've always had a full sized bed. There was no full size model to test at the store. Brian assured us (I was with a friend who was also mattress shopping) that anything could be returned within 4 MONTHS if I was unhappy with the product. That seemed like a wonderful promise - almost too good to be true. And it wasn't. Immediately after delivery I tested the mattress and frame. To my surprise, I slid off the end of the bed when it was adjusted. My feet hung off the edge by about a foot. Clearly, I needed a Queen or a King. I gave it four days to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong or simply needed to adjust how I lay - but every time I hung off the edge. I contacted Brian about the problem and he said it was the first time he'd every heard of anyone having that issue. Then he told me that only the mattress could be returned. They didn't accept returns on frames. So basically I could put a queen sized mattress on a full sized frame. That made no sense. I acknowledged that since I wanted to exchange for a larger model there would be an additional charge for the larger size. But Brian said that even if my request was approved, I could no longer get the sale price since the sale ended two days earlier. So basically, I was being told I could buy another bed and frame at a non-sale price but would have to keep an additional electric adjustable bed frame! An expensive and ridiculous proposition. Brian contacted me twice afterwards saying he was trying to get ahold of the owner to get an approval. But he said the owner was a tough person to deal with and he doubted he'd agree to what I wanted. That was it. I never heard from him again. I was already feeling overwhelmed by the pandemic and national politics and frankly, didn't have the energy to fight a battle about a mattress. I've now had the mattress - purportedly with a 10 year warranty - and its already developed a sag in the center. I feel contacting American Mattress would be pointless since they've already demonstrated their promises are meaningless. I still intend to file a report with the the BBB. read more

10X WORSE THAN A USED CAR SALESMAN! STAY AWAY!!! We just got back from American Mattress in Evanston. We are buying a king size mattress and live two blocks away, so we had already mentally committed to buying here. The salesguy (maybe store manager) Tom was one of the rudest people I have EVER met, employing every high pressure sales technique possible. He told us that if we didn't have an hour to devote, it wouldn't be worth the time, and that he has everything we could possibly want so we should come ready to buy. All we wanted to do was get an idea of their selection and range of prices, and he didn't think that would be worthwhile. My wife couldn't even look at the guy, she was so mad. When another customer walked in, we immediately took the opportunity to walk out. I don't know anything about this guy's prices, but usually these kind of high pressure sales aren't a good sign. Oh yeah, this guy's store also smells like a bunchy of musty mothballs that have been soaking in urine...just the way a mattress should smell. read more

One star is far too many to give this place. I went in here to take a look at some mattresses (obviously) with no intention of purchasing anything that same day. The only sales person around at the time was the store manager. He kept pushing and pushing me to buy something, and I kept politely telling him that I was not interested in purchasing that same day, but would probably still come back. He was so upset and desperate to make a sale that he kept arguing, telling me there was no way I would find a better price or another mattress I liked more, so why wait, and what was "my real problem" with buying the mattress that day? Obviously I was trying as best I could not to completely break down, even though the aggressive condescension was overwhelming. When I finally told him I didn't feel comfortable buying anything right now and was going to leave, he threw his hands up in the air, raised his voice, and said "You know, I have tried my best and I've had a great attitude with you, you could at least have a better one with me!" Um...what? He then proceeded to argue with me about leaving and followed me out of the store yelling. Needless to say I couldn't believe how rude he was to me, and I will definitely not be going here again for any reason. As a side note, he attempted to give me a "deal" on a bed that really wasn't a deal at all -- if you look around online at bed prices, you'll find that American Mattress' prices are really not anything special. There's no real reason to go here. You can likely get a better deal at Back to Bed, Sam's or Costco. read more

The awful reviews are a few years old so it seems like they've changed things up here. Michael is the manager & he was super helpful. Attentive but not pushy, patient, informative. I mean.. It's a mattress store so you find one you like in your budget & you buy it.. Not that complicated. I got a queen Serta with box spring, frame, mattress cover, 2 pillows, & delivery for $800. Convenient it's right in the middle of Evanston so it's walking distance for NU students. The 5 stars is mostly for the delivery guys. They were SO FAST. Not in terms of delivery turnaround (which wasn't bad either since I ordered on Tuesday & got delivery on Thursday) but literally the delivery. Two guys- one carrying a mattress & one carrying the box spring ONE HANDED down my hallway so fast I had to run to catch up to open the door. They set that shit up in literally FIVE minutes & were gone. I threw all the cash I had at them but I wish I had at least another $20 cuz they were SO FAST. read more

We went in to check out a mattress - and the guy asked us what our "time frame" was for a new mattress. We said it wasn't urgent - just that our current mattress was super crappy. Disappointing experience. Felt as if some of the salespeople were so new they weren't sure what to say or do. Not overly helpful, not rude, but definitely not trying to sell me something. I went to another location to ask some questions and felt much more welcomed and my questions were easily answered. Needed to get a full sized mattress for my sons new bunkbed. We had gotten our other mattresses from American in skokie but it closed up as well as the other smaller mattress shops in the area by mattress firm, whom I'm not a fan of. I can't stand pushy salepeople who are impersonal and try to sell you on credit cards and the most expensive mattress in the place. They talk more then listen. So i went to Evanston American Mattress and had a completely different experience. I told Todd what I wanted based off my previous purchases and even though they didn't sell the same one he offered me comparable mattress, price matched it for me and thanked me for the repeat business. This place is never busy, don't wonder why the people there are worst than car salesman. I bought a bed from this location the box spring broke in the first month I bought it. Darlene wasn't helpful when it came trying to replace the box spring. She told me that her manager would contact her about it and she would call me. It's been three days and no call. Don't waste your time there just look on line first then go some where that knows customer service there is a big markup on beds talk them down tell them you sought it cheaper elsewhere. read more

I went into the store earlier in the morning and found that it wasn't busy. The manager, Michael immediately welcomed me and was prepared to answer my questions. I did research ahead of time and knew mostly what I was looking for, but I still had plenty of questions, which Michael was able to answer without making me feel like he was just trying to sell me something. I spent some time comparing the different mattresses and finally managed to find one that would suit me. Michael was incredibly pleasant through the entire experience and was willing to work with me, which was highly appreciated. I must say that I felt no pressure during the entire experience and was welcomed to spend time on my own comparing. Overall the experience was definitely one of the better ones I've had while shopping for any type of home good, not just a mattress. We needed to purchase a double bed mattress, boxspring and frame. I called the day before we came into the store and spoke with the Sales Manager, Sonny Vitale. I explained our "must haves" and Sonny was very helpful. When we arrived at the American Mattress store the next day, Sonny explained the differences in the mattresses and encouraged a "comfort test" on each mattress that fit our needs. Had to purchase a new mattress for a family member who was being discharged from a nursing home on short notice. I called American Mattress to see if they could accommodate me on such terms and Larry was so helpful, it was shocking. He told me that they didn't actually deliver on Wednesday but if I decided on something that was already in-store, he would even deliver it personally for me. He asked questions and made suggestions to make sure I got the mattress that best fit my needs and at the end of it all, even asked about my family member as if he were an actual friend.
