They work hand in hand to give you personal service. They can also order items that aren't in the store. I had a futon mattress from them that lasted 16 years and a bed frame that could also be used as a couch--impeccably made. I bought gorgeous futon covers from them as well. They're exceptionally patient and not pushy. But above all, their inventory is cool and their ability to find interesting furniture, lamps, etc. is so very creative. read more

My review is mostly reflective of my frustration w/ their deceitful promise on when I'd get my delivery & their unresponsive delivery service. I still don't know if the furniture will be good or bad (because I have not received it yet at the time of writing this review). I went there several days ago and purchased a bed and mattress. (FYI - The prices are OK, but I would not consider it a sweeping deal. I payed over $500 for the simplest queen size wood bed frame and a mid quality mattress + delivery.) During my purchase the staff person - who was very friendly - promised an unrealistic delivery time. I suspect she knew it would take a long time, and felt that if she told me I'd have to wait a week to get my bed, I would have gone to another store. They were out of product - and later claimed to not have known that they were out when they sold me the bed (who is keeping track of your inventory, if not you?) - which was their excuse for the first 4 days of not being able to schedule my delivery. Several phone calls and days later I was still wondering when I would get my bed. Every time I called I'd be promised that I would hear back right away from the delivery person to schedule my delivery and never did. They were playing with my time, comfort and money. Their delivery person ignored my phone calls for several days. After I threatened to cancel the purchase, the store staff finally pushed the delivery person enough to call me, and then he informed me that he had already scheduled my delivery (for a date and time when I wouldn't even be in town.) I guess he assumed I'd have nothing to do but wait for him.. and he did not need to ask / or pre-schedule things with me. On top of that, he tried to charge me more for the delivery and set up of the bed, than the amount than the store staff had quoted. Unless you are taking your furniture with you right away, I'd say go elsewhere. read more

I haven't been to an Affordable Portables store in ages! In fact, I've never been to this particular location before and used to visit the one next to Wiener Circle many years ago. Wow is this place packed! Now in retrospect, I'm not even sure you could get a wheelchair in there the space was overloaded with so much to see and sit on. You'll find a mish mosh of furniture at all different price points. Sofas, loveseats, futons, tables, ottomans, stools, chairs, etc. I mean really you could furnish an entire place just by stopping in. Prices are fantastic, which I imagine is a huge major win for someone just starting out with their first apartment. I stopped in because my kiddos are looking for a small sofa for their room. Of course I saw a super cute loveseat, but it wasn't a sleeper so I passed, but for around $200, it would have been a major win. The catch, and I didn't think to ask, is I'm now wondering if you have to buy the floor model, which would be horrifying (not gonna' lie, it's a little gritty feeling in there), or if you can order the same style from their catalog. The owner mentioned they have a great catalog if there was something we didn't see on the floor. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wish I'd had more time to check it out, because there might just be a sleeper sofa I can order up. Prices seem to rock here. Great variety! I noticed a fab bookcase as I was browsing, so I'd like to come back when I have more time. Not a place to come in a bit of a hurry. read more

I have never actually bought anything here, but I have to come by and give them five stars because twice I have borrowed furniture (once a lounge chair and once a desk) for student shows. Borrowed. As in, the owner charged me nothing. Thank you thank you thank you. The furniture itself is good for students, and they have a whole load of futons to choose from as well as bedroom and living room furniture and a few other various pieces and light fixtures. This store sells exactly what the title suggests: Furniture that folds up. On widow display are beds of that very nature. This is not a place you visit to decorate your condo. Love love love this store! Needed to quickly furnish an apartment and I went into Affordable Portables on a whim after a disappointing trip to Ikea. The customer service at this place was fantastic - felt like I was shopping with friends! And the items I purchased were so much better than IKEA at a similar price point. Delivery was also great. Steve was fantastic - so pleasant and he and his partner worked quickly to get everything moved in and assembled. I definitely plan on returning soon to pick up a few more things. read more

This place is cool. Seriously, interesting stuff and the prices are good. Add on top of that the fact that the owners are ridiculously nice, and you have a great place to check out some furniture. Absolutely worth checking out for anyone who is scrounging for some surprisingly cheap furniture (and good quality). Stuff that at other places I'd expect for $800+ was like $400 ish. Never again! I have been lied to several times about estimated delivery dates for a bookcase. 3-4 weeks is just that...it's not 6-8 or 10-12; it's 3-4. With that said, I ordered on a Sat. and called a week later to get an update. I was told when I ordered the piece someone else had also ordered furniture from the same manufacturer and that it could come sooner. When I called there was no update. I was told it would take 3-4 weeks...it is now four weeks later and I'm being told it will not ship for another two!!!! Are you serious?! So, all they can offer to do is drive it to the place I need it delivered to. Honestly, the delay is worth more than the $5 in gas it's going to cost to get it to its destination. I have always liked this store, but customer service is sub-standard and mis-leading. Even if we consider this NOT to be outright deceit they still withheld pertinent details as they did not call me with an update (you had to know it would not be there this weekend, Avis/Debbie) as promised. After moving to the area for school, I was looking for some "affordable" furniture that would be comfortable for two years. I can honestly say that Affordable Portables is probably one of the best options in the area; the price point is good for what they have, and although it's not the highest-quality selection, I think it's great for someone just in the area a few years. I'm really happy with the couch I bought, and Debbie who helped me in the store was nice, and pleasant to work with. So why the two stars? It's actually because of the "delivery service". I only live four blocks away, but I am by myself, and so needed my couch delivered. "Steve", their delivery guy pretty arbitrarily jacked up their (sketchy, cash-only) delivery price by $10/flight of stairs (I live on the third floor). Paying 20% for delivery on a $500 couch didn't exactly make me feel warm and cuddly, but then this morning when the delivery arrived, he was pretty rude, complained about the stairs, made it seem like getting it upstairs was going to be a huge deal (it wasn't - I moved all of my own belongings up the same staircase and was just fine), and then left without even offering me change for the cash I handed him. All in all, it left me with a really bad taste in my mouth after what had been a good shopping experience. My recommendation: if you can pick up your furniture on your own, or have your own delivery person, definitely check them out. If you have to use their delivery service, go with IKEA - that's what I'd do if given the option again. They deliver now, too, have similar quality stuff, and are much, much nicer. read more

The prices and furniture were okay, but the two fat guys that worked there were real assholes. We found them to be very rude, and other customers in the store while we were there received the same rude treatment. They gave us crap for not using their suggested delivery service, and were unhelpful both times we were carrying our purchases out of the store. read more

If there is a zero star, then I will choose it. This store's customer service is terrible. If your furniture has an issue after purchased, their service attitude is super rude. They keep complaining, keep mentioning they are correct and customers are wrong, even yell to customer on street. Won't come back again. read more

We were looking for a queen size futon because the room we are isn't that big and we want to have more space so the little one could walk around. The woman who greeted us, Avis, was extremely nice and extra accommodating. I think my daughter may have also left a lasting impression on her. We went in on Monday and had our futon by Wednesday. My son and I had a really positive experience with this business. We found the staff (Debbie) to be very helpful, and she worked hard to show us all the options available for a sofa and table for my son's small college room. The items we wanted were in stock at a nearby warehouse. The items were delivered a few days later, and the delivery person (Steve) worked with us to schedule it around my son's class schedule. Sure there was a "cash only" delivery fee, and we paid extra for the table to be assembled. Debbie warned us the table required assembly, so this was not a surprise. All in all, I found the price of the furniture to be very reasonable and the delivery charge to be fair. We would go back to this store to buy more furniture, and I would recommend it to others. read more

This is my favorite eclectic furniture store ever! I love just looking around and browsing. Despite the apparent limited display floor space, AP actually has an enormous selection. In my experience, if you don't see it, just ask - I have been consistently surprised every time, they have always either had it, or were able to get it. Many people don't know that they carry a full line of many other mainstream furniture store brands. I recently fell in love with an expensive sectional couch I found at Ashley furniture up in Wisconsin. Upon checking with AP on a whim while in Evanston, I was very surprised to see they could get me the same piece from the same manufacturer - and at a cheaper price!. I have since taken delivery of this couch through AP, and this piece is just wonderful. My lesson learned here I guess is, if you see a nice furniture or home accessory piece someplace else, give Affordable Portables a shot at it too. I've started to think of them as the furniture equivalent of ABT - they will work really hard to meet or beat the price someplace else. Plus, it's kind of more satisfying to see the business to go to a smaller local merchant these days, instead of the monster chains. read more

Paid for furniture over a month ago and still not all furniture has arrived, even though the store owner said that "they will be here next week" for the last 3 weeks. How tiresome to have to keep going back to the store! We asked for a refund in the end. read more

Feelin' the love at AFFORDABLE PORTABLES! I went in looking for a bed for my son and Avis, the owner, went out of her way to be helpful and showed me several options in the store and in stock and also items catalogs and also recommended a very affordable option for me that is made in AMERICA (love that!). No sales pressure--she gave me catalogs and print outs that I could take home with me and noodle on. Also, if you are a DIY-er, they offer "naked" furniture that you can stain and finish yourself, saving you lots of dough and letting you match a new item with ones you already have. Sorry but this place sucks....Just because it's supposedly "affordable" doesn't mean they have to sell stuff of low quality. Yeah, futons are cheap and yeah so is the quality, cheap as hell. I just bought a futon there a week-ago, the mattress is sooo bad that it feels as if I'm sleeping on the wood frame itself. You feel the frame just by *sitting* on the mattress and I'm very thin. I had to order a mattress pad online along with a comforter to put on top of their cheap mattress if I want to sleep well. Avoid that store ! Even if you're a college student (such as myself) or on a budget., save some money and go buy your futon somewhere else !!! read more

We had the same problems as others who have written negative reviews here: misleading information about what was in stock and when they could deliver it, and abysmal customer service. On Monday, when we purchased, the salesman told us he had our futon and frame in stock and that it would be delivered by Friday. I had to make arrangements with the deliveryman (bad sign, I think) and he kept pressing me to confirm our items were in stock. I dismissed his concerns because the salesman had been so certain. I should have known better. After arranging with the delivery guy for a Thursday delivery between 10-2, I waited until 1:30 before I called the delivery guy, who told me the items weren't in store. When we called the store, the salesman made lame excuses, blamed others, and never apologized for misleading us and inconveniencing us. If they had been honest with us in the first place, we might not have bought but at least we would have considered going back in the future. Now, no way. read more
