I take issue with the policies of the company. *** If you aren't frequently visiting your storage unit AVOID this COMPANY at all cost!!!! Currently I am paying way above market rate for my rental. I have tried working with the company for a reduced rate and they won't lower the bill after being with them for years. I was told the only way to reduce the rental fee is to move my contents to another unit. I understand this is their company and they can have whatever policies they want. I really want to make any future long term renter aware there are much cheaper options in the surrounding area, especially if won't visit your unit frequently. I have another unit in the surrounding area and the prices are much lower. Renting from this company has been a costly mistake and I want others to make an informed decision. read more

I would actually rate this a zero! Super pissed and annoyed about how the situation this evening went. We purchased a 27x 10 space earlier in the week but when we got there today, the truck behind our space was overlapping into our space, making ours 24 feet. When talking to the guy working, his response was he can get the guy to move the truck up in the space( which he did a few inches and didn't help), try to switch with the neighbor but no answer or leave the premises with our boat. We paid for a 27 foot spot but it was really 23/24 feet.. but according to the guy working there, it was our fault to not test out the spot first to see if it fit. The guy reported the truck guy didn't want to move his truck and bc he has been there a whiland the working guy said nothing he could do about it but leave the facility. So we had to find a spot, at 7 pm, to be able to place our boat. Extremely disappointed in the staff and situation. I would not recommend this place at all. Waiting to talk to the owner/ manager about this as well. read more

Polite, fast service, and they even called me to let me know that I had accidentally locked my door open. Why even manufacture a door lock that does that? Who wants to lock a closed storage door in the 'open' position? I was out of the area at the time, and when I got back, it was still locked open... But nothing was missing, so yay! There is key-gated access, and it's right off the intersections of 95 and 495. Military discounts. Oh! And they'll either give you a month free or a free trailer to pack your stuff into that they'll pick up and deliver to the unit at the end of the day. read more

Great experience here with American Self Storage. I needed somewhere to park my company commercial truck at the last minute. I happen to find this place by chance. When I called the staff was very helpful, informative and cheerful. When I went in person it was the same experience. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. Paper work was easy to read and understand. Really, really bad... If you do chose to rent here, beware of the following -Utterly infested with mice. Do not store anything that is not sealed in plastic. Cardboard boxes will be shredded very soon. And your unit's floor will be covered in mouse droppings either way. -Be extremely careful about your payments. As in, pay at least a week, if not two weeks, in advance. Over three years, I had three occasions where I received a late notice, complete with overlock notifications, penalty fees, etc., despite the fact that my check had cleared at least a week before the notice was sent out. Each time I had to go in personally, with copies of the canceled check. Each time they took the lock off my unit, and waived the fees, but never once apologized. This can't be an oversight: It's a tactic. -Watch out for unexplained, and unnounced, changes in rates. My rent went up three times, twice without any notice (see below). Despite that fact that they will rent a new 10x20' unit for $245, my rent was $308.50 when I closed my account. Their strategy appears to be, get the renter to move his or her stuff in, then jack up the rent, over and over again, and hope they don't feel like moving their stuff again. -On two occasions, my automatic payment went through, but then they waited as much as three weeks to tell me that the rent had gone up. By then, several late fees had kicked in. -Rude, unhelpful employees. -I actually liked their RFID key access system (as opposed to punching in a code). Problem is, they mounted well back from two steel-reinforced pillars, making it virtually impossible to reach from inside a vehicle. -Finally, when I had moved out all of my stuff, and was dropping off the key, I was informed that my account still owed funds -- despite there being several days left in the rental period. I asked how much, was told it was about $70, and said "bill me." Nope -- they tried to hold me hostage, basically saying that until I completely closed the account, the amount I owed would continue to go up, day by day, for eternity one would assume. So basically after three years of being a customer, having spent thousands of dollars at their facility, they still had to extract an extra $70 from me. To be honest, had they just waived that -- as any well-run business would -- there would be no Yelp review. But they got their $70, and I wrote my review. There are many other storage choices in the Alexandria area, so there is simply no reason to use this one. Stay away. Edited March, 2016: I received an apology email from the GM. That counts. A shame we couldn't have worked out something before things got ugly, but in appreciation for the gesture, I've bumped the rating from 1 star to 2. Edited Sept 2017: I see that "Kathy" is publicly responding to negative reviews with outright lies. So, they go back to one star. I also note that there are several reviews that have been deleted because of a violation of Yelp TOS. Since they were all five-star reviews, no doubt they were exposed as shill reviews. I have to agree with what the detractors said. Basically I had the same experience. Rates were unceremoniously jacked up. I signed up to pay one monthly rate. I then logged a late fee. Why? Rate had gone up and I hadn't been told. I then submitted check for the new rate -- plus late fee since previous check had been rejected on account of unannounced rate change. This happened a few times -- with rate increases...until I finally just moved my stuff out of storage. Folks, unless your stuff is very valuable, don't put it in storage, particularly not here. You end up paying far more in storage fees than the stuff is worth. Worse, these people are predatory. Yes, very nice and professional on the surface -- but unethical, predatory, and shady in business practices. They are *desperately* money hungry -- desperate for the easy cash in the lucrative storage unit space, where you, the customer, are seen as a ticket to their wealth and an easy mark for their money grabs. Want to see your rate keep going up for a crappy little storage unit, without prior notification and with late fees tacked on every time they pull this stunt -- on threat of locking you out of your unit and threatening to auction off your stuff, then this is the place for you. Love this place! The staff is helpful and gave me a tour. They also helped recommend a storage unit that was the right size for me! I love that it's month to month so I don't have to worry about hidden fees for leaving! Actually they said I get whatever part of the month I haven't used refunded when I decide to leave. This site isn't as pretty as the rest I looked at yesterday but they offered me a free trailer to help move my things into my new unit! That's pretty awesome. read more

They delivery it to your location, you load it, and they pick it up once done. The trailer is then dropped off at your unit to unload. No gimmick. Charles took us around to show us a lot of units at different sizes and prices to help us figure out the best unit to fit all our stuff. He also helped us get a good deal. We never felt rushed, and they had several different sizes of units so they can accomodate anything from a box to a couple rooms of stuff. Facility is humming with activity, so it feels safe to me as a female. The facility is easy to access as well. Definitely recommend! read more

Their strategy is to get you in and then they jack up the rate. I had a 10X20 unit and found out they were offering the unit for $145.00 per month less than mine and I had been there for 8 years. When I asked them to lower my rate they said no. I asked if I could move my belongings to another unit for the lower price and they said yes. Apparently their strategy is to make things difficult so you won't move and pay the new rate. A couple days after this conversation I received a letter informing that they were raising my current rate by an additional 10%. I decided to look around and found units for half my current rate. So instead of moving to a new unit I am moving everything to a new company. Super unethical business practices and on top of all that I lost some items because of a major mice problem which I now see is fairly wide spread. Stay away from this company!!! read more

DO NOT USE!!! I used this storage facility for one year and when I went to get my items out of the garage sized unit, one of my couches was COVERED in mouse poop. COVERED, covered, covered in mouse poop, and there was a dead mouse under one recliner and in between the cushions of the other. When I called the storage company, they sent a maintenance guy over who swept up the mice and threw down some poison. That was it. I asked if I'd get a discount or any kind of financial compensation to off-set the cost of my ruined furniture and the manager said that I'd signed a form freeing them from any responsibility if my things were damaged in any way. His customer service was HORRIBLE and he was incredibly rude to me. I would NOT advise using this company for any kind of storage. read more

We had two storage units as American Self Storage for one year and were very pleased. The customer service is exceptional. The staff is always willing to help you if you need an extra hand. If you call or go into the office, the staff is knowledgeable and ready to help. Our property remained safe and dry. If you are looking for storage, you should check this place out. This location has horrendous customer service. I do not recommend you do business with them. I have left 4 phone messages over the last 2 weeks in an attempt to reach the manager "Kathy" at the 4551 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria VA location regarding my rental space, but have never received a return phone call. The receptionists are unable to do anything other then tell me they will "continue to leave her the message", but are incapable of contacting her or helping me solve my problem. read more
