Rude, condescending and non-helpful staff. Never seen anyone on the property to get help from, couldnt use the carts, because they were locked up and no one was there to unlock them.. The lady i spoke to on the phone said she would be doing me a favor ,,, by essentially providing the service ...well, ok. No, you would be doing your job, actually, by helping customers who paid for the unit. Never again. Advice to the management- please explain your employees their power trips are not being appreciated and do not sound cute. Good for losing new customers and therefore revenue though. read more

The general manager, Milka, is the most unhelpful customer service woman I have ever interacted with. She goes above and beyond to inconvenience you and has an attitude when you ask anything of her/when she actually has to do her job. You are not allowed to use the dumpster on site, even though there are no signs that mention that and no email communication sent out about it. Milka called me to return to the site to remove trash FROM THE DUMPSTER and threatened me with a cleaning fee if I didn't. How about posting signage about not using it before making such a ridiculous threat. Not to mention, this is a rip off of a business - my storage space cost tripled over the course of 6 months. DO NOT RENT HERE! And definitely not at 401 S Pickett with Milka as a general manager - worst experience I've had at a storage unit. read more

They charged us after we left the unit, and when I called customer service to request a refund, I was told they would only send a check to our old address in four weeks. They refused to refund the credit card they charged or send the check to our new address, which means we're basically not getting a refund at all. Extremely frustrating and unprofessional. read more

Just moved in, can't wait to move out! There are no carts available. The only one that's on the property is locked up. There appears to be minimal security on this place so don't like coming here at night. Definitely wouldn't want extended hours here. The gate to let vehicles in and out is the only security on the property besides some barbed wire on the fencing and a couple video cameras that may or may not work. But most importantly, the staff are super rude. Arrived mid morning and couldn't get the door up that goes to the inside storage facilities. Even scraped my fingers trying to get the latch open. Went to get the property manager and was made to wait for several minutes while she went to do who knows what. There were no other customers on the property. She got the latch open, but didn't say anything just walked away before I could even get out of my vehicle. I would've thanked her for her help, but she walked away without even letting me know she had opened the latch. At first I thought maybe she was going to get tools but then I realized the bolt was moved. I came back this evening after dark and a car turns into the driveway in front of me but the pulls off to the side until I go past. Then this car pulls behind me at the gate, which is super sketchy, so that I have to open up the gate. I use the app to open the gate, but I don't want to let some unknown vehicle in after me. Especially one that's acting very suspicious. It's a deserted place and I'm concerned about my safety. Turns out it's the same employee. She comes up and identifies herself (the vehicle is not marked and she's wearing a winter coat so I don't see her lapel insignia right away but as soon as I realize it's an employee, I move forward so she can get in. No problem as long as I know it's an employee. This is also after office hours are long over so it being an employee is not who I'm expecting). But she then comes and asked my unit number to put in a complaint for me because I wouldn't let her in the gate. I did as soon as I realized she was an employee, but I'm sorry I don't want to let somebody I don't know into the property behind me without their own access code. That's a safety issue. All the other Public Storage say don't open the doors for others, don't let other people in--and this employee is upset because I don't wanna let some unknown car in behind me. Any complaint on me is unfounded, but I'm already going to look for a new place to rent. Also, the latch only fit a specific size of locks and I don't know if they'll let me trade for the locks I already have that have worked for every other Public Storage unit. read more

BEWARE and DO NOT RENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Due to a recent transition, I moved out of my Public Storage unit of 3 years and my mom rented a unit to offload her items from my unit. I submitted a move out in December but scheduled the actual move for Jan 3rd because I couldn't move out on New Years Eve. I thought surely I wouldn't be charged the full month if we only used 3 days in January. However on Jan 3rd, I received a charge of $460 for the full month of January. I called the office to confirm I would get a partial refund and was told "I can't prorate and we don't prorate". I explained we had been customers since 1985 and after some back and forth it was obvious they had no intent to refund or discount part of the month's charges. That means instead of paying $44.49 for 3 days of usage, we paid $153.33/day in January. Also, I and my family have rented units from public storage for 40 years. Sometimes we had 1 unit, others we had as many as 3 units but the money paid to Public Storage is roughly $200,000 over that 40 years. Rent has always gone up here an there but about 8 years, Public Storage started an obscene fee increase campaign which resulted in about $50/mo to $100/mo increases every year. My mom is retired and on a fixed income. As a result, we started spending every Christmas holiday purging things from our storage units. However, because city living is so tight we would always require some form of external storage. With the high costs of moving facilities we never had much choice but to accept the increases. A couple years ago, I learned Public Storage was charging new customers a quarter of the rent they had charged us for years. I periodically checked and new customer rates are still much much lower than existing customers. So as a big thank you to long term customers for spending so much, they give discounts to new customers and drain us financially. So now after 40 years, I'm done. I will NEVER RENT FROM PUBLIC STORAGE AGAIN, I'm moving my elderly mother out of the unit she just rented and I will make sure everybody in the U.S. learns of our experience and don't rent from them. I just left this location. It was 11:10am when I arrived. The door was locked but the office attendant was sitting behind the desk. When she unlocked the door I entered and asked what time do they open. She replied 9:30am. This young woman never smiled, frowned the entire time, maintained an ugly disposition and was certainly not to convey any sense of welcome to this establishment. Absolutely HORRIBLE customer service. The worst. When I asked do they have a location business card for where can I go online to give customer feedback she took out a card and started to write on it, then stopped and explained that she didn't feel comfortable giving me her name. I replied that I never asked for her name and was not interest in what her name was. I repeated what I originally asked for but noticed the address location on the wall when she recommended Yelp. Then realizing I was intending to write about this experience online she asked it there was any issue. I first got my storage unit back in June of 2023. I have had nothing but positive experiences since then. Milcah, the manager, has outstanding customer service. She is prompt and has immediate responses whenever I contact the office with questions. She is also very personable. She even remembered my name and addressed me by it when we spoke in person which to me conveys attention and a desire to engage positively with her customers! The elevators rarely work, the corporate hoops you have to jump through just to talk to a human are ridiculous, and my rent has been raise almost $100 since I started renting there only 3.5 years ago. I've contacted the BBB and basically Public Storage is holding me as hostage since I'm not in VA at the moment and don't have any other options! Not going to lie- I'm pretty confused about any of these reviews that are above the mandatory 1 star. This place is horrible. In short- this is a storage unit. You pay a monthly fee. You place your crap in there, you lock it, that should be the end. Right? Right??? Seems pretty straight forward until you realize they INCREASE that monthly fee whenever the heck they want and for any amount they deem necessary. Two years ago, I put my belongings in a unit and moved out of state. The plan was to store them for three years while I was away temporarily. My original rent was $86/mo. I'm now at $189. Not to mention, if you do not pay your rent on the first day of each month, you can look forward to a full blown multi-calls- a- day assault reminding you that you are late. Storing items should be the easy. Having to fly back just to move your items out of a unit because of insane rent increases is nuts. Go somewhere else. Just rented a storage unit here. Wish I hadn't already moved half my stuff into the storage unit. They keep all carts for moving items into units under lock and key and are only available when someone is working the desk. Asked property manager who blamed the district manager who refused to talk to me said to call customer service. I've used other storage facilities long term and they always had carts available to customers. Public Storage doesn't apparently trust their paying clients to offer a standard customer curtesy. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! Worst customer service ever! First of all I was walking with my dog and decided to stop by to purchase moving supplies. The door was locked at 4:15PM. There was no signage stating "be back in 5". As soon as I walked in the store Malika stated the dog could not be in here. I said she is a service animal. she proceed and asked "where is her leash?" I replied "she has a leash.... do you mean Service vest?". She said yes. I said she is not required to have one. Then she proceed and asked for my documents stating she was a service animal. As you know it is against the law to ask for documents, because it is essentially against HIPAA. I really did not want to continue interacting with her so i left and called the district manager Fatima who to be honest did not apology and try to recover services! I just wanted to relay the information and let them know customer service was horrible and to educate staff to abide by the laws. 1/20/24 Unbelievable horrible experience today.....minding my own business moving out of my unit before the end of the month, and Melissa the manager, walks by my unit and says "excuse me, do you have food in your unit"? I assume her accusation was based on a food box she saw in my unit. I tell her there is not food in there, its just a box. She demands that I prove it to her by opening my box. I refuse, telling her its my property and she has no right to demand to see the contents of my items. She tells me it is policy that food cannot be stored. I totally agree that people should not store food in their units, as it will attract mice and pest, but I do not have any food in my unit. I told her I would not open the box, but showed her the writing on the outside that states the contents, all my boxes are labeled with a sharpie pen listing its contents. I asked her she can smell the box if she doesnt believe me. Things got heated and nasty as he was yelling in my face demanding to see what was inside despite me stating over and over that I had no food and what was her proof for demanding that I open my boxes to show her. She also brought up that she would evict me if I did not open my boxes. At this point, even though I didnt have any food and could have opened for her to see, but I decided not to because in her capacity as a manager she was acting like a thug and not professionally, it was basically "Do as I say or else". Her tone was also loud, as we both were shouting at this point. As I walked away pushing my cart, and she in the opposite direction, she continued to yell and say things as she walked down the hallway. Hopefully, its all on camera and upper management will be able to watch. I loaded my van, and went to the front office. Doors locked, empty desk, so I sat in my car, trying to reach corporate, eventually she showed up along with a co worker, I got out of my car and went to the door, where she left but an employee (Yami) stayed to opened the door. I explained the situation to him, and at first he was apologetic and said perhaps she took it too far, and I asked for her to come out and apologize to me directly, he said it wasnt going to happen. I asked for the policy, and he printed out something and handed it to me. I asked where does it say about "food", he said line item #8. #8 states that they can inspect your unit within 3 days of written notice, if they suspect criminal activity, there is nothing no where that states about storing food....again, I am not storing food only collectibles. I pointed out that what he gave me does not state what they are all saying is policy. Frustrated with me, he asked me to leave, even though it was only 4pm and they close at 5pm. I stated I wanted to stay inside until I could get this situation resolved. Then another male employee chimed in and also asked me to leave, and stated that I was a grown man and to handle it myself. At one point, this person says "do you want to take it outside", and I asked to do what? and He said "to do whatever you want"....I was shocked this is a national franchise and a professional business and they have people like this guy working here?? does he not realize that there are cameras everything and he is being recorded at all times? Anyways, Im pretty sure the manager Melissa over stepping her authority and lording over people with her demands and then they have nerve to kick people out of their store for no reason. Not one employee acted impartially, instead they all just ganged up and supported one another, very immature and unprofessional. They kicked me out because they said they have stuff they need to do and could not be in the lobby while I was there. I said its only 4pm and you close at 5pm, I was hoping someone would help me resolve this situation, but they two guys just keep repeating that I need to leave the premises. I left and called corporate to file a complaint against Melissa, turns out she did so too, but falsified the situation by adding things that didnt happen, like stating I had candy in my unit, and that I told her to smell the box like she was a dog....and stating she felt threatened by me, even though she was 6 inches from my face yelling loudly and saying she was the manager (video), complete lies to protect her job. Melissa is a Liar. I came back later to find a lock on my unit. I live out of state and have a very busy schedule and only have Friday night (after work) and Saturday to try to take care of my business, and now there is a lock on my door until when?? I was hoping to move out completely this weekend and now they have messed up my schedule and inconvienced me. I dont have time for this madness. Upper management please fix this location, its chaos here at 880 S Pickett St and your employees are acting like a bunch of bullies and overlords. read more

I chose this location based on the positive reviews on their website. Since I was searching during the Pandemic, I appreciated their "contactless rental procedure" and the social distancing practiced by Angelina within the office where I bought boxes. I was able to reserve a unit online and received a call from Angelina within 60 seconds (she is on it!). She helped me choose a unit more suited to my particular needs. Only suggestion for improvement would be better lighting within the unit itself. There is none in my inside unit and I must rely on natural light from the hallway and by leaving the outside door open. Not a problem so far, but would like more light. Been using this facility for two weeks and have made multiple trips in and out. So far all is functioning well. read more

Made reservation online about a week in advance. Received 3 voicemails that day, another one mid-way to movin and 1 the day before. I was told I needed a gov ID each time. I decided to do the paperwork early before work. The unit was a bit in disrepair (hadn't seen cardboard walls in other storage companies until now), then was told I need to buy an overpriced lock right then if I didn't bring one. No one in all the incessant calling stated this. Bad feeling right up front. Decided to go with a different company and their first call was "bring your ID and a lock, which you can buy if you need one". And the walls were metal/aluminium and the unit clean and well structured. Take what you will from this. read more

This place is a joke and Fatimah is incredibly rude at this location. I came in before my move as soon as they opened and wanted to see the space I reserved (before paying) to make sure there was enough space. She couldn't figure out the code for the gate so after 30 mins I decided to leave and come back after I moved. I came with my Uhaul and after about 45 mins she still had the same nasty attitude and couldn't figure out how to work the gate or get my code correct (at this point I had already paid but had not seen the storage space). I passed a girl ciera who was cleaning out one of the storage spaces and I let her know that Fatimah was incredible rude and couldn't figure out my code for the gate. She walked me to where my storage was because clearly Fatimah was too lazy to assist a paying customer. Ciera let me know she was going to figure out the code and come back with anew card. Well after about 15 mins she comes back (after u already started removing furniture from my Uhaul) and tells me that fatimah gave me access to a unit that was already occupied and that I would need to go to one located elsewhere. Ciera did offer to help put the stuff back in my Uhaul but at this point I'm extremely annoyed. I go to the new space (and was charged a transfer fee) and I am then told by ppl who also rent there that I needed to wait until they finished moving before I could start moving my stuff. Mind you at this point I HAVENT EVEN SEEN MY STORAGE SPACE THAT I PAID FOR. I go back towards the gate (the code still doesn't work) I go back to the office and ask for a refund and to cancel the lease. These people didn't read more

I've had a unit here for maybe 6 months. They were super friendly when I opened my account (of course) and service has been steadily declining since. They recently raised my rate (almost $200 for a 5x10 - gtfoh) and when I tried to call customer service negotiate it - I find out they entered my dl info wrong. Poor customer service to me, my ex girlfriends, and authorized charges I was at the facility at 400 Picket St on 9/28 or thereabouts to make a $50 help out payment for a friend that has a mental disorder. At the time I attempted to help her secure a better rate since it was apparent, she was paying twice the rate as others with the same unit. (I would later find out from an area manager that the store attendant could have processed a rate adjustment, but instead I was advised to ride out the end of the month, cancel the contract , and start a complete new one , requiring new admin fees and lock fees, and insurance. When the end of the month came, she was sick, and unable to make it, instead coming the next morning. They said no go you have to pay the inflated rate all over again. I instructed her to file a complaint as she had also been told of he rate adjustment option, and I think they were just pulling her chien and taking advantage of someone they felt didn't know any better. But this is not the real reason for my complaint. Tonight, I found two additional unauthorized charges against my credit card. Nov 18 for 97.40 and Nov 19 for 142.00 . Also, during the first time I was there, I asked the clerk of a prior $25 late fee could be waived. He said ok. It I checked a couple weeks later and eh said he was waiting for the district manager to approve it (that he didn't say before ultimately the district manager disapproved (so essentially he lied) Tonight , 20 Nov I called customer service at apx 6:20 eastern and spoke to Denice. I was told there was nothing they could do. They don't have the ability to research it, that my only option is to report it to my back. Well ive have credit cards stole before and I know for a fact the merchant has an obligation to research and resolve the situation. As for as I'm concerned its Public Storage engaged in illegal activity. read more

Booking my reservation online for a 10 x 20 unit and arriving onsite to be told that there were none of these sized units available at the time of my reserving it online. I called customer service as the onsite contact was restricted to what she could do, customer service suggested I call the Regional BP Jeff Clark; I left a voicemail about my problem on Saturday and still have not heard back as of today. After 2.5 hours onsite talking and trying to resolve the issue onsite with the on duty manager (Angelina), I had to have a resolution before leaving the location as I had movers scheduled to deliver to a unit I did not have. I am so frustrated that the PS knows the limitations its customer has when coming to deliver and store items, yet they could not suggest anything to me other than pay double the amount to reserve an available unit. I am disappointed and beyond upset that I had no other options for myself or given a resolution in a more timely manner. The worst customer experience i have had, I want to make sure that others needing a storage unit, go elsewhere or call in to confirm your reservation prior to arriving for checking and being told your unit was never available for booking. The icing on the cake, after finally booking the unit and departing, I was called the next day by the office to be informed I had a balance owed of $4.00 for checking out of a mystery unit...I am so frustrated, I will be moving out of the unit at the middle of the month and never using your services again. read more

While my original impression of this facility was favorable, it has steadily fallen since then. The past three times I've visited my unit, either you drop off or pick up items, there hasn't been a hand truck available. And it's never crowded when I come (today, my car is the only one here) so I have to assume they no longer have this service. I won't be renewing my lease unless this gets resolved - it's not worth having a storage unit with no way to lug things in and out. read more
