I called Rich yesterday, told him my sewer line was backed up a few months ago, I cleared it with Drano. After discovering a sewage backup in my garage where the cast iron drain pipe is located, I checked Yelp and chose American. The owner, Richard, quoted me a price of $200, which was acceptable to me, and came the next day, immediately starting to roto-root the line, even though I had expected him to begin with his "free sewer inspection camera" as stated both in his Yelp page and on his website. Just a few minutes after starting, and, clearly, having trouble getting through, I - - standing behind him - - noticed water coming up through a break in the driveway asphalt (the 40-year-old driveway is in bad shape, and I had just finished sealing it, purposely leaving some larger divots unfixed, like this one). When I alerted him about it, he, immediately, stopped, and announced that it was due to "orangeboard" - - a tar and cardboard "pipe" system between the garage and cesspool piping, which was to save money over cast iron or copper, but, due to being too easily broken by roots and other things, and its lifespan of up to 20 years, its use was prohibited in the 70s; our house was built in 1964, so, it is incredible that it lasted nearly 6 decades - - and that it had to be replaced by a professional, which he cold not recommend, meaning that I had to search for another contractor. When I asked how much his cost would be, I figured that he would reduce the $200, considering that he accomplished nothing, except for exposing that the orangeboard had a major issue. As a handyman, myself, if I quote someone a price, but, can't finish the job, then, I don't expect to be paid in full, so, I was surprised that he charged me the full price, especially with a big bill coming to dig up the old pipe and replace it with PVC ($1700 on my credit card) with another Yelp contractor, who came the same day (he happened to be in a nearby neighborhood when I called, and did an amazing job). American Sewer may do good work - - especially, given the stellar reviews - - and he was friendly, but, perhaps, too quick on the draw with his invasive equipment, but, he should know when to cut customers some slack, especially when he couldn't finish the job, himself. read more

Snake out the kitchen sink line. It has a bad turn in the line that fills with sludge. A long snake is needed to clear it. Our technician was great. He knew what to do and totally cleared the line. We were very happy with his knowledge and that he is a very nice person. It was a holiday so we got a surcharge but it was still totally worth it and we appreciate the service. Richard called promptly after leaving his last job exactly as he said he would. Took the necessary time to set up of his tools and buckets and tarps to keep everything neat and tidy (much appreciated!). He asked what I had previously done especially with commercial cleaners like drano. He knew that I had previously attempted to use drano because it softens the trapped grease making the snake less effective. However, he did get the snake into the drain about 60 ft in and then the clog was finally gone. He put my p-trap back and tested the line by filling the sink halfway and letting it drain while the faucet was running. It drained so fast! All in all, it was about 50 minutes from start to finish and it turned out to be the exact cost of the estimate. I used American Sewer some five plus years ago and I needed my main sewer drain cleared of the obstructions again. My concern was tree or bush roots clogging the system. Even though they were closed for a holiday they were the very first response on Yelp that I received and they explained that they would return and be available Monday morning. I forgot to write this review of American Sewer and Drain's work from over a year ago: A drain from the kitchen to the far end of the basement had been clogging repeatedly for years and was now resisting ordinary efforts to clear it.
