Similar to other reviewers, we have used American Taxi for years to get to and from O'Hare airport. Never had a sinfle problem until this year. Twice we have ordered a taxi ahead of time and been stranded. Once in the late morning trying to get to O'Hare and most recently this past Saturday night. We had reserved a taxi to take us home from a wedding because alcohol was being served, and it never showed up! There were four "seniors" trying to get home late at night and no ubers available. This is the shadiest organization - and taxi companies wonder why they're losing to Uber. I get in the cab from ohare and the driver me he takes credit cards. Fast forward halfway through the ride he informs me that he "misplaced his smartphone" and that he'll need cash. Conveniently the "meter also stopped working". I don't have cash so now I'm forced to go to an ATM late at night because this company is shady. Oh, not to mention the van smelled like cigarettes and body odor so I had to keep my window down the entire ride in the middle of winter..... it's a no for me, dog. read more

Scheduled a taxi day before to pick up at Midway. Paid a surcharge since flight arriving at 1:50 AM. American Taxi was a total no show. I have used them for years and never will again. They left me totally stranded in middle of night. No one answered phone live just some occasional texts saying no one available and back later. Pickup to airport was timely and efficient. Reservation was made for return home at time of reservation. Received a text message the day before arrival to text "R" when ready with luggage. There was no one at airport to pickup. Called general number, (and they had our info), but they said "Mondays are a very busy day; we will get someone there in "awhile". A different driver came within a half an hour. He sped along the express ways: 80-85 m.p.h We had to request that he slow down. Would never use again or recommend. read more

We pre-ordered a Van to take me, my child, and my parents to the Airport. 15 minutes before our scheduled pickup, we get a text saying they can't provide a Van. I had been using American Taxi for 3-4 years, always to/from O'Hare, for business travel. I had been generally pleased until this most recent trip. I always reserve the outbound cab on the website the night before a trip, and cabs were always early or on time. This time the driver calls 5 minutes after pickup time to ask where I am. I am at my house, where are you? Despite phone GPS, it took a few more calls and 10 minutes later to find my house. And he proceeds to talk and mumble to himself the whole way. I always use automated phone system for airport return, calling once I have cleared customs. On the phone and via text they confirm the terminal, door number, and cab number. After waiting in the cold for too long without a coat, cabs calls to ask where I am. I am at Terminal 5, door E, as confirmed for my order, where are you? At Terminal 1, he thought that's what I had said... But we had never spoken, the order was done entirely through automated phone system. Another unnecessary and annoying delay. He also talks and mumbles to himself. And don't ask me whether to get on the highway - I have been traveling for 20 hours and have no idea what traffic conditions are. Use Waze or Google Maps! I liked the fixed rates and ability to schedule online and via phone. But either there is a problem with dispatch, or drivers lack competency. Enough! read more

Terrible service. I'm just going to leave the email I sent to the manager of American Taxi. No follow-up action occured: I am following up on my message I left today on the American Taxi complaint voicemail, as well as a phone call to Barb, a manager. Both were regarding an extremely negative experience my mother and I had with taxis cab #142. Our taxi trip was arranged from O'hare Airport to Skokie at approximately 7pm on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. I have just dropped off my mother at her home, who was visibly upset at today's experience. "Our experience: I should have known this particular taxi driver would be problematic after he arrived 15 minutes later than the arranged time at O'hare and then carelessly tossed our bags into the trunk. As my mother was cold, we asked the driver to close the passenger side window, which he did, and then opened the drivers side window. Repeated requests to turn off the radio, so I could make a call, were ignored. Once we started our drive, that is where the larger problems arose: unsafe driving. The taxi driver drove irregularly and less than 40 mph on the freeway. My mother and I began to notice every car begin to fly past us and cross into our lane due to our slow speed and problems merging into lanes. Both my mother and I began to become concerned and asked the driver if he could drive more safely. The driver responded that "he knew how to drive" and then began braking abruptly at intersections and stop lights, which it seemed intended to "show us a lesson". I noticed the driver was checking texts and other media on his phone as he was driving. I told him to please pay attention to the road and stop using the phone, which was also ignored. At this point I had enough, and I told the driver to start driving reasonably or we would stop this trip. The driver then began to cuss, using profanity such as "Fuck you," "Shutup" repeatedly, and racial slurs. I was then told "You are not an American, so stop talking." Please note, that though I am of Korean descent, I am born and raised in Chicago, and this comment greatly upset my mother, also a U.S. citizen, even further. Finding this particular driver unreasonable and unsafe, I began to call American Taxi to issue a report and had him stop at a gas station to end this trp. We then walked the remaining blocks to our home. We paid the fare just to have him leave. Overall, this taxi driver's behavior is harassing and unacceptable. I have lived in Chicago close to 25 years, have taken hundreds of taxis including many American Taxi cabs, and this was the worst experience I have ever had with a taxi. I'm a home-grown Chicagoan and looked forward to returning to my hometown after a several week trip, and to experience this as I walk off the airport was deeply disappointing. During this experience with the taxi driver for cab #142, I had to wait for the late driver past our arranged meeting time, had my luggage mishandled, repeated requests regarding windows and the radio ignored, been in the car with an unsafe driver checking his phone, and then was verbally harassed, all in front of my mother. I had and still have intentions of contacting my attorney, however Barb did do a good job ensuring me that this driver would be taken off the road and reprimanded. I plan to call tomorrow morning to follow up on this complaint, and expect that there is proper followup. I look forward to your reply." I have used American Taxi well over 50 times. The taxis are clean and the drivers are well mannered. However, I would estimate that 1/5 of the times, American "loses" my order and no one shows up. Or, they are just incredibly (30-90 minutes) late. Standing at the Medinah train station in winter praying (as an atheist) that one of the passing cars is my taxi is a crappy place to be. Then when you get into the taxi, they have ads "warning" you against taxi services that imitate them. Seriously? Do they imitate your 20% error rating? Happily, I won't have to use them ever again. read more

I have been a customer of American Taxi Dispatch for about ten years. I have general been pleased by the consistency with regard to punctuality, cleanliness, and courtesy. But two recent experiences have cost all of that goodwill. 1) On a reservation made three days in advance, and with confirmation number in-hand, my cab did not show up to take me to the airport. The dispatcher said she couldn't do anything and that it would be at least 90 minutes for a cab. Not even an apology. I asked to speak to a manager and was told that there were no managers in the office, and she couldn't take a message for a manager. 2) Separate experience with a driver who may really have had mental problems. Swearing to self, driving erratically, and talking on the phone during the drive in a vehicle that smelled like smoke. read more

Had used American Taxi in the past, but last night was by far the worst experience ever. Cab #827: pick up from o'hare (called to make a rsvp) 1. another guy almost took our cab - driver didn't even bother to confirm who he was picking up at the airport. 2. runs a red light, and decides to slam on the brakes after he passed through the intersection?! dozing off? 3. Here's the worst part. As we arrive at my house - he wants $3.00 more for GAS! WTF. Ok...I can understand toll and the $2.00 stupid o'hare fee which is posted on the sticker on the window. but GAS? He then tells me to call dispatch to verify, which I did. They confirm, there is no such thing as a gas fee. Dispatch says - they'll call the driver, which they do, because I can hear the phone ringing, but he hits the "end" button, and doesn't answer. Total was $36.00 however he wants $39.00. Gave him $40.00. Probably the last time I will use American Taxi. read more

These guys don't deserve the default one star Yelp gives them. All the one star reviews should speak volumes, and any other company would likely want to address this, but it appears American Taxi doesn't give a sh*t, and this should concern you, besides the reckless driving, the insurance limits, (addressed below) and the fact their drivers don't show up when they are called, if this is what you're looking for with a taxi company, you have found taxi nirvana! When you call their number, you get a message stating that should there be an accident, the most you will get from American Taxi is $500,000 and using their service acknowledges your agreement with their terms. You can not sue them for anything above and beyond $500,000 Having used their cab service once before (once was enough) the way their drivers drive, I would feel safer with a half blind 15 year old student driver behind the wheel, But if you have to deal with their drivers on the roads in your own car, I'd be willing to bet Glen Lerner's law office could clear a multi-million settlement as American Taxi drivers don't use turn signals and brakes and brake lights are optional. (If they even work in the first place) I'd like to thank American Taxi van #346 for cutting in front of me earlier tonight to gain about two car lengths from where they were before, it took a miracle to lock up my breaks and nearly driving my car into the medium to avoid hitting this SOB. Calling their number to get a manager to complain gets a voice mailbox, calling any other legitimate taxi company in Chicago will get you a real person. Thank God for UberX... read more

The hotel I was staying at arranged for 2 taxis from this company to pick us up at a train station. After 40 minutes, the taxis never showed up. I called the dispatcher after we waited for 15 minutes and was told they would "try their best" to "hopefully" have someone there in another 10 minutes. 10 minutes passed and I called again. This time I was told they we unsure how much longer it would be because they were short on drivers. I asked if it would be closer to 5 minutes or an hour and the dispatcher told me he didn't know. Eventually we were able to have a family member pick us up. This company is incredibly unreliable and basically didn't give a crap about us. read more

American Taxi cab 32 574 TX license plate Cab # 454 hit us from behind on May 11th. The cab driver refused to show us ID or give us his name. He had no photo or ID showing in the cab. He appeared to be unfriendly and well sorry, but very foreign to the point that I wondered if he was supposed to be driving that cab or if it was his friend's shift. He had a passenger in the back. We should have gotten that fellow's name but he looked elderly and not well. Cab driver left scene of accident after showing us insurance. Their insurance company: First Chicago Insurance Company is trying not to pay the claim even though we have pictures of the cab and our vehicle: all sides, date and time stamped. This driver was in stop and go traffic (stopped at the point he plowed into us). He apparently was not looking forward. His passenger was lucky enough to get to ride in a cab with smoke coming from the radiator when he got the cab restarted (it was stalled for 5 minutes). My advice: Don't take American Taxi. I had an amazing experience with American Cab this past weekend. United had canceled my flight out of O'Hare at 10pm and practically every hotel in a 15 mile radius was all booked. I finally found a room and made it out to the hotel using a Yellow Cab from the airport ($58 dollars!). But when the hotel turned out to be a horrific dump, I called American Cab, deciding to head back to O'Hare and camp out until my flight in the morning. American Cab's flat rate to the airport was only 23 dollars (compared to Yellow Cab's $58). But when the cab driver learned that I was planning on spending all night in the airport, he insisted on driving me around to different hotels in the area to try to find a room. He also gave me suggestions of different hotels to call while we were driving. Once, when I went into a hotel to inquire (no luck) he continued to call up other hotels on my behalf. Finally I found a room! The best part? Even though we must have spent at least 40 minutes on this hunt - he still charged me only the flat airport rate! read more

I booked American Taxi for my ride home after arriving from Europe with my young granddaughter. When we reached O'Hare airport, I texted them when we arrived and when we had our luggage. After waiting for 45 minutes in the cold, an American taxi picked up another client and I asked him about our reservation. He gave me the phone number for the dispatcher and assured me she could get me a taxi. I called her, and she rudely told me she had no taxis available, but an O'Hare employee told me that there were several cabs staged in another part of the airport and that there was no reason for my non-pickup. I wish I would have believed your negative reviews and will never use this company again. read more

Another great taxi experience for us here - we have used them to O'Hare and we also used them for our wedding. A flat rate from Evanston to O'Hare, the fixed rate was only $25. From Evanston to downtown Chicago (we requested a taxi van) that was only $37. Very professional and got us there quickly and safely. They were there if not on time, definitely ten minutes early. Let me start this off by saying that I understand how busy NYE is for cab companies. Because of this, I ordered the cab to take us to the bar early in the morning on the 31st. I ordered the cab to come at 8:15 and it showed up at 8:40. In the meantime we were calling all the numbers they have on their website only to be hung up on. The cab driver clearly wasn't happy about having to drive us the couple of miles we wanted to go, but I wasn't taking any chances on NYE. Then, I ordered the cab home around 1:15am. After waiting around for over hour for our cab and calling multiple times to have no one answer or to be hung up on again, one of the NICEST bartenders offered to drive us home. As we were walking in the door of the house, I got a text message (at 2:30am) from American Taxi saying that there are no cabs available and to either try again in 10 minutes or find alternate transportation. Like I said earlier, I understand that they're busy...but that text message would have been useful about an hour before it was actually sent to me. read more

My roommate fell asleep on the Metra and missed his stop. He happened to be on the last train of the night, so we were trying to figure out how to get him from Mount Prospect back to Des Plaines. I did a quick Google of "Chicago Suburb Taxi" and this was one of the first to come up. My roommate called them and had a taxi within ten minutes. I don't personally ride many taxis, so I don't have anything to compare this to. The price was a little less than $10. We made it $12 with the tip. All in all, I'm glad they specialize in areas of the suburbs, because I've had taxis at O'Hare tell me they don't know where Des Plaines is and left me stranded. read more

I hate using this company due to the inconsistent pricing between Des Plaines and O'Hare. Sometimes it is $20, other times it is $25, and other times it is a complete surprise. Funny how the prices are similar to places like Glenview when the distance is 1/3 of that to Glenview. Recently at midnight, I got a quote from the dispatcher for $25 from O'Hare to Des Plaines (before Metra Station). As soon as I get dropped off, the taxi driver states $29 plus tip. First of all, I should not be told "plus tip". It should be up to me to decide whether I tip based on the service. I told him that I was quoted $25 and he gave me some BS that it is 25 plus a 4 dollar airport exit fee. Anyway, this is the reason companies like Lyft (pink mustache) will win over customers like myself. *** Avoid taxis at all cost and if you must take one, do not get into the taxi until the driver agrees on what you were quoted on the phone. read more

American Taxi has been pretty reliable for me when I can't get picked up from the airport or am stuck in the suburbs for whatever reason. They are fairly quick on the pickup and the cabs are usually clean and smell ok compared to city taxis. But, yeah, Elaine's right--sometimes the prices seem a bit high when going a distance from the airport that on a straight meter instead of a fixed price would be at least a third less. We had to take American Taxi once to catch the last train back into the city late night one night and we didn't think we could make it, but our cool Polish driver kicked some serious ass and made it with several minutes to spare. Our dog was really happy because otherwise she wouldn't have been able to go out all night if we had missed that train. So five stars for the cool Polish dude, but three for decent but not amazing American Taxi service on the whole. read more

Although I usually use airport limo services, I tried American taxi for my latest trip. I was traveling from Grayslake to Midway, and I felt a little guilty for charging $150 to the company for a private limo. Anyway, I called American Taxi's northern suburbs number a few days before my flight and they setup my reservation and gave me a confirmation number. My taxi driver was punctual (early, even!), and I got a minivan even though I didn't request it. Upon your return to Chicago, American Taxi has a separate airport dispatch number that you're supposed to call to order a taxi after you've picked up your stuff from baggage claim. However, on my trip to the airport, my taxi driver gave me his personal cell phone number to call if I needed a ride on the way back. I'm sure it's hard to get airport taxi customers with the shortage of people traveling due to the economy. I felt bad for the guy since he was incredibly friendly, so I called him the day I was returning to schedule a pickup for my return trip. If I order a taxi and get a confirm number, I expect the taxi to actually pick me up. Or I'd at least like a call letting me know that the driver isn't coming. We've ordered taxis from American Taxi plenty of times with great service, but I'm sorry, one screw up is enough to make me stop using them. I had to be somewhere at a specific time, and my car was not available to me. I ordered it a half hour before my pickup (because they are usually here super early), and then when the time passed, I called in to find out when he'd be here. It took 15 minutes on the phone and fairly rude customer service to finally tell me that the driver couldn't make it. What? No phone call or notification? Sadly by that time it was too late to get another cab to get me to my destination. Bottom line: Don't use American Taxi if you need to be someplace, cuz you'll never know if you will really get there. (Gave them two stars for the nice and dependable cab drivers we've had from them in the past.) Going to use Uber now. read more

I actually use them twice a week every week for over a year. Today I had the worst experience. My order kept getting cancelled and when I got a cab number my driver picked up someone else. I have to give credit where credit is due. I have used this taxi service many times since my original review was written. And have received nothing but stellar service while calling for a taxi. I will usually use them for a return trip from Midway. The reason I like them so much, is because of the flat-rate fares they offer to and from the Loop, O'Hare, and Midway. From Midway to Bolingbrook, it's only $41. No surprise fees. The drivers I've had are always prompt and courteous, and will help me with my bag, even though the only thing I have is usually my backpack. They accept credit cards willingly (company policy- they don't accept your card, the ride is free) and pretty much stay off the phone and obey most traffic laws. read more

After being hung up upon (timed out in queue) I finally got through. I've been using American Taxi for several years now. I love the flat rates and the efficiency of this company. Each time I pre-booked it from my house to the airport they were early and each time I've called from the airport they were there within 5 minutes. I really like the automated system because they already know who I am and my regular address, plus the system takes into account if you have a blackberry. I know that sounds silly but it's frustrating when I need to type something and the numbers on my phone aren't set up the same way as a regular cell with (abc) on number 2 (def) on 3 and so forth. Special thanks to cab #900 the driver was exceptionally friendly and after I made a small comment about the mugginess of the Chicago weather he immediately closed the windows and turned the a/c on. That wasn't my intention I was just making small talk, but it was really nice, plus the cab smelled surprisingly really good! read more

If your address ends in "Chicago, IL" and you are going to a destination in "Chicago, IL" they will not serve you. But they will let you make a reservation on their mobile app. Quiet ridiculous when considering I was trying to get a taxi to O'Hare Airport from Eddison Park (North Chicago). I'm sure they have great service if you want a taxi from Naperville to O'Hare though.... EDIT: Craziest part was that American Taxi pulled up to our apartment, and just before I was able to step outside he drove off. What on earth is this company thinking. read more

I used to love them. They are one of the few taxi services that a) are resonably priced going decent distances and b) take dogs. However, twice now they have left me and my dog stranded somewhere random.
