I used to use American Tqxi all the time when I traveled for business (pre pandemic) with very good service. I used it for the first time this last vacation and was very disappointed. The trip to the airport was OK; no real issues. However, the return trip was awful. I received multiple texts telling me I could reserve a cab for the return trip by providing my trip details. This to me indicates they will plan and coordinate to ensure there is a driver otherwise why ask. There was no benefit to me for ordering ahead. I waited for an hour to get my cab and that was only because I called multiple times to ensure a cab was coming. Their excuse was they were short on drivers. Again, why have us order in advance if they are not going to find drivers in advance. I didn't take Uber because it is not the most convenient pickup process. This pickup was for 12:30 AM so it wasn't due to traffic. It was simply a poor unreliable system. Don't offer/accept an order if you don't have there drivers. I am going to start researching a car service for my next trip as I do not trust this service. After having traveled all day and arriving at midnight the last thing you want to do is wait an hour for a cab!!! read more

This morning I wish there were a way to rate zero stars! They have left me hanging in the past on reservations fill at the last minute (having reserved the night prior) but this morning takes the cake. Reserved dinner time Sunday, got the standard message about a cab being assigned to me at a later date. Fine. I go to bed, wake up at 4:00 am and am treated by message after message about my cab not assigned, do I want to cancel-No I WANT MY AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION! When I am finally in my Uber, I get a text 20 minutes after the cab was to be there that I have been assigned a car which will arrive in 26 minutes-45 minutes late. Poor customer service-just tell me when I reserve you can't supply a car and I'll use a different vendor, no big deal but to leave me hanging........... read more

I have been using American Taxi for years. For goodness sake, it's a taxi service. If you need to get somewhere from where you are and you don't have a car or easy access to public transportation, taxis can be great. Out in the Chicago suburbs, taxis within the suburbs can be very expensive. But, with so much competition for airport business the taxi companies all went to flat rates many years ago. I've always had success getting taxis to arrive at my home on time to get me to the airport on time. The other way around can be more taxing. Going to the suburbs from O'Hare NEVER get in the taxi line. Find the taxi phones by baggage claim and find the one with the lowest fare to where you need to go. Don't ever pay the meter rate. Now, there are lots of taxi companies working the suburbs and I've had experience primarily with two of them. American Taxi has been the best I've found. Understand the taxi service is only as good as the driver. Some know there way around, some don't. Some like to talk to you, some don't. Some are very friendly, others can me rude. As long as all you are looking for is a reasonably priced trip to the airport or home, this one is great. If you want stellar service with a smile - hire a limo. read more

Driving down Central Road in Mount Prospect today. A one of their taxis, a white Toyota Sienna, Taxi number 300, was driving on the left lane while I was on the right lane. There was a small SUV turning into WeGo trail, and the taxi driver decided he wasnt going to wait. He then merges into my lane cutting me off. I ended up having to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the Taxi. Once I got beside him he didnt even seem apologetic. He basically gave me a "F** off" look. When I told him I was going to call the number on the side of his cab, he decided to make a left into Busse Rd. My guess is to avoid me reading the number. Unfortunately for the driver, my car is equipped with Dash Cams which caught the whole event. I have emailed the Taxi Company and EXPECT an apology from the driver. I highly doubt itll happen though. Sad part is; this isnt the 1st time I've seen the drivers of this taxi company drive this dangerously and recklessly. read more

If a driver actually shows up, they're usually good. The problem is, if you need to be somewhere at a certain time (doctor appt, airport, etc), they call or send a text 15 minutes before they should be there to let you know they have no driver available, even though you scheduled a ride days in advance. I had a taxi reserved and confirmed through their website, and the taxi never showed up. When I called, they said they were overbooked and couldn't find my reservation. The customer service agent was also very rude. We ended up having to use a ride share service instead. Very disappointed with our experience. read more

I pre-ordered a cab before our flight left. When we arrived and told American we had retrieved our bags, they sent a cab. After waiting only 5 minutes in the cold our cab arrived. The driver informed me that he would not take us and that he had been reassigned. I would need to call to get another cab. read more

After a week on the road when I landed at O'Hare I was ready to go home. It was 7:30PM, the airport was rocking. I grabbed my bag and had a dilemma, taxi or UBER, Uber was very expensive and the wait was almost a half hour. I chose a taxi, it arrived in a few minutes and I was off. I have to tell you cab#99, a Toyota Sienna minivan with a driver who got me home in record time. Their was a Garmin Navigation screen mounted in my line of sight and if we had wings we would of been airborne - a good speed reference; theirs an interstate between New York and California with the same number. I am not complaining- I highly recommend cab#99 if you want to get home early. It would of been a 5 star rating if the cab had been a bit tidier - not a fan of the seat covers and the air freshener to mask cigarette smoke. A request w/b smoke free taxis/car service read more

My family has been using American Taxi for airport runs for several years now. Always a great value and from our home a prompt, even early, pick up. The drivers are courteous and the cabs clean. I like that we can order a car to accommodate 4 pairs of skis or just an overnight bag. I used the App this week after arriving from an international flight and I was very pleased the the outcome. I was tired and just wanted to get home quickly and that's just what happened! It was great to receive updates via text, and directions to the exit where I would be met were all clear to my foggy brain. We will continue to use them. read more

We had a taxi prescheduled for a specific time to bring us to the airport. They never showed up. We called and they said "its showing complete" (clearly not since we weren't in the car) they would call us right back and never did. We called a second time and were told the same and still ignored. Luckily we were able to get an Uber to not miss our flight. Almost an hour late, they send us a text saying WE AREN'T THERE! Terrible experience, lesson learned, choose Uber or something more reliable. Never again. F! read more

It is Sunday morning, there are no congestion at the airport at all and I had to wait more than 30 minutes for a taxi. Also, when car arrived it was a disgusting. I wish I had a plastic bag to sit on to separate myself from the interior of the vehicle. Lastly, I have lived outside the US for large portions of my life and I understand different dialects and accents, but I truly have no idea what language my driver was speaking to me. Scheduled a cab the night before through their app. In the morning tracked their cab ..."your order will be assigned in 20-30 min", checked again 10 min later ... "your order will be assigned in 15-20 min." Then nothing. No more messages, no cab. I was left scrambling to drive myself to the airport. These guys are operating off last century's business model. If they can't provide reliable transportation services then why are they here? I'm switching over Uber/lyft completely. read more

I am a former suburban taxi driver. After retiring, I left behind some great customers, really great people. Two customers in particular are a husband & wife who commute regularly, separately, to/from Chicago to Dallas via O'Hare. They live in Dupage county. Upon my retiring, the husband set up a pickup with 303 Taxi for a ride to O'Hare on a Sunday around noon. 303 Taxi never showed so he called American Taxi. He looked up the online flat rate, it was $29. With the $2 airport tax & tolls, let's just round it up to $35. He gets to the airport and the driver tells him it's $74???? After arguing back & forth he paid the fare & was not happy leaving the cab. A few weeks later his wife goes to Dallas. She sets up the ride with American and confirms with dispatch a flat rate of $34. She gets picked up and upon arriving at O'Hare, the driver tells her the fare is $80!!! Once again, they go back & forth as my customer explains the flat rate while the driver is trying to feed her 100% BS because he's jacking up the fare MORE THAN DOUBLE AND HE KNOWS IT! She paid the $80 because it was around Christmas and wanted to be done with it. First off, a note to all American Taxi drivers as well as all suburban & City cabs. For all of you ripping off the few customers you have left is insanely stupid. I am well aware Uber & Lyft have taken away a good majority of the taxi business. This does not mean charge double or triple the fare to the few customers you have left. I did the complete opposite in my last years as a driver. I gave all my customers every break possible to try & stay competitive with the ride share competitors so those customers would STAY WITH US. I didn't even charge my customers tolls as I absorbed this cost as a daily expense. Hiking fares will only drive them away. I used to back the taxi drivers and I know there are some good ones out there. But to take the approach Of the drivers from the 2 stories I mentioned above and if you continue this criminal practice, you will see ALL the business go to Uber & Lyft. At this point I frankly don't care if it does. What those drivers did to my 2 passengers was a CRIME! If a customer runs out of a cab without paying is a crime but a cab driver charging a customer $74-$80 on a fixed fare of $35 is also a crime. That's how you lose business but unfortunately it's a well known fact many drivers aren't the brightest bulbs in the room. The end result is American Taxi has lost 2 customers. I now take these 2 customers to & from the airport in my own car. At this rate the taxi industry is looking at extinction down the road in the not too distant future. The American Taxi pre-ordering and tracking system does not work. Waited 40 minutes for a cab that the system said had already arrived. Was put on hold at dispatch and told repeatedly the cab was 'only 2 minutes away.' The driver was rude and did not follow safety protocols. Have used this company for more than 20 years. Well started using the when Uber was charging high fares , first few times were fine but last few were crazy - one guy would not speak, drove 70 mph on Dempster hitting the horn the whole way, another late night pick up got us in the cab pulled out then pulled into bumper to bumper construction going South on 90 when we were going North when so many other routes were open insisting " this is route" then he pulled into the shoulder and insisted I pay and demanding a tip before he would get back on the road. I have used American taxi for years and have really liked them. This morning I had a reservation that I made a week in advance. I got a message less than 30 minutes before pickup saying they couldn't find a taxi. Then they assigned one and 3 minutes later unassigned it. It's now 15 minutes before pickup. I kept getting messages saying they were still looking. I called and the person on the phone was rude and not helpful and hung up on me. We were going to the airport we needed to leave. We ended up canceling and driving to the airport which will cost us a lot more. American taxi needs to find a better way to assign taxis and get people their orders. I will not be using American taxi again. read more

Once you are actually in the car the ride is fine! But their dispatch service stinks. I had a cab cancel on me once as I was standing with my luggage waiting and he told me that I needed to call the cab company and arrange myself for a replacement. If you pick up the dispatch and something happens, YOU should arrange a new driver with your company. On two occasions they sent two cars for me and there was confusion to who I was actually supposed to go with. Which is a little unsettling late at night. and then the driver who didn't get the fare called me directly and was yelling. Professionalism and organization are not the strong suit. read more

Used to be a reliable company and we used their services for years. Last two times we've been left for 30+ min beyond scheduled pickup times w/no shows. Could be labor shortage related, but then dispatchers should keep commitments realistic so clients can secure other options. read more

Mu husband takes American Taxi regularly. However, this past week, we have some concerns about their fleet maintenance. We took the minivan service. On the way to the airport, the van was jerking and could not maintain speed. The drive was forced to pull over on I-88, stop and restart the car. Merging back into traffic on I-88 is always dicey. On our return trip home, the van started shaking and making a horrible noise. The front fascia was loose and dragging. The driver was forced to pull over twice to pull it up and remerge onto I-88. Very frightening and concerning. read more

Just witnessed TAXI LICENSE PLATE NUMBER 36810 TX tailgating and flashing other drivers, trying to run drivers going speed limit off the road by driving in nonexistent lanes, illegally make a right turn from a straight only left lane , speeding up in front of multiple cars that were going speed limit just to slam on their brakes. read more

I had two rides recently: Cab #888 on 04/01/17 was an excellent experience. The driver greeted us in a friendly way, loaded our suitcases into the trunk, had BBC World News on the radio, drove us safely to the terminal, and unloaded our suitcases. We engaged in friendly chitchat. He helped us figure out the correct terminal for our departure, too. Cab #250 on 04/06/17 was an awful experience. The driver didn't greet us at all, stood idly by as we loaded our own suitcases into the trunk, drove recklessly to our destination, and didn't help us unload our suitcases when we arrived. The only words he spoke were to confirm our destination, and those were barely audible. All three of us in the car felt unsafe at the speed and manner in which he drove. I completed the transaction on the kiosk during the ride and, when the system announced that I hadn't left a tip, he audibly scoffed and then glared at me in the rearview mirror. It was the rudest, scariest taxi ride I have ever had. It is the first time EVER that I didn't tip the driver. read more

I've been a customer of American Taxi for over 15 years and the rates are generally better than Uber or Lyft for the same quality of service. They have transitioned from a company of employee drivers to contractors, similar to the way that the rideshare companies operate. Upon request, they offer flat rate trips with only one destination, no additional stops. One big advantage is that American Taxi does not charge a premium for advance ride scheduling, but like the rideshare competitors, there is no guarantee that a driver will be available at the requested time. A few drivers made it kind of obvious that they prefer longer, more costly rides like 30 to 45 minutes or more to the airport rather than my 10 to 20 minute local rides. The majority of drivers are appropriately friendly and professional. Even most of those who are not ideal are safely tolerable. It wouldn't matter to me that a disproportionate number of drivers are eastern European, former Soviet block, or Middle Eastern, except that they don't understand English well enough to discuss ride details, especially when GPS is directing them the long, slow way or they are about to miss a turn or make it a block too soon. (I've experienced the same issue, to a bit lesser degree, with the rideshare companies.) Averaging two to five rides per week this year, there have only been four drivers about whom I complained and requested that they never again be assigned to my ride requests. Three of those were because they took an unreasonably long time to pick me up, over twice as long as projected, and one of them over five times as long. Two drivers were very rude in the way that they spoke to me and one lied about how out of the way and inconvenient it was for him to pick me up. Three times, I felt unsafe with the way that the driver operated the vehicle or the mechanical condition of the vehicle. If you're keeping track, that's nine complaints, because of multiple offenses by those four drivers. None of those reports have been acknowledged by the company, but I haven't seen any of those drivers again. Interestingly, I've never had a memorable complaint against a female driver, the several of them that I had. One was particularly remarkable as a very good driver. Pleasantly and surprisingly, I got her again three or four times in the next few weeks, and I'm disappointed that I haven't seen her again. Their telephone staff leave a lot more to be desired. Some of them do not speak English well enough to understand the telephone conversation, or are pretending not to understand in order to avoid answering specific, direct questions. During times when they are very busy or there are few drivers available, they blatantly lie and promise a ride will be assigned within 15 minutes and up to an hour later they still have no vehicles available. Another time, during four phone calls in an hour and a half, they kept promising that a driver would arrive in five minutes, until I finally cancelled the request and took a rideshare at a higher cost, and I got the ride within 15 minutes. Several times when a driver was late for pick-up or the tracking information showed that he hadn't moved, the customer service people told me to call the driver myself. The few times I did, the driver didn't answer and I had to call back to the company to get a different driver. The best times to get rides are weekdays during morning rush hour. There are much longer wait times in the afternoon. They have very seldom been able to fulfill my ride requests for the evening or later night, even when requested in advance, unless to an airport, and even some of those were late or unfulfilled. Their technology has issues. I have been unable to link my telephone account with the website and the mobile app. Sometimes, the automated system fails to send text messages to confirm the ride request or notification of the assignment of a driver. Some drivers have figured out how to block the tracking app from revealing their true location while on their way to the pick-up. I have had better results using the telephone system, without any contact with telephone staff, than on-line or by the mobile app and that is also not totally without problems. The automated telephone system makes it clear that there is a preference for riders to go to an airport or the loop downtown, even though they are supposed to be a suburban service company. read more

Service is declining. App isn't able to take more than one vehicle. We arrived with 11 people (with a reservation) that indicated they would send the next available van, not the two we ordered. I then requested two minivans and a taxi directly on the phone from dispatch. Said we would receive a text of the car numbers...never came. Called back...same outcome. My daughter downloaded the app, ordered the vans and a car. The car was deleted because they thought it was a duplicate. Outcome, two minivans finally showed up and we sat with two young children on the curb breathing exhaust at ORD for almost an hour before the third vehicle showed. After 25 years...NEVER AGAIN. read more

Literally the ONLY good thing I can say about them is that they're cheap, which is probably why they are so lousy in every other respect. They are unreliable, half the time they can't find the address I give them, or end up at the wrong address, even with GPS, and blame it on the GPS. Sometimes the driver will just not show up even after I receive a text saying they are on their way, which I don't find out about until I call to find out where my cab is. Placing an order ahead of time won't guarantee you a cab, which defeats the point of pre ordering. Don't waste your time, you're better off spending more money on a more reliable company read more

I ordered a taxi to ORD for my wife using app.  Shortly after picking her up, the driver stopped at the Shell station on the corner of Rt. 53 and North Avenue in Lombard.  He asked my wife to pay for gas.  She said she wouldn't, and apparently, he wouldn't pay for it, either.  He left the station without getting gas, proceeded to drive on to I355, then ran out of gas somewhere near the Lake Street interchange.  Dispatch said they couldn't send another cab because they couldn't stop on the highway.  I tried calling American Taxi to see if that was true, and was repeatedly asked for an address.  I told the representatives that I didn't have an address since the cab was on the shoulder of the tollway.  I was and continue to be baffled that Dispatch couldn't communicate with the driver.  A representative told me that the driver's GPS was turned off and he wasn't answering his phone.  My wife had to download the Lyft app and schedule a ride, obviously risking missing her flight... I've never had such a horrible experience with an American Taxi driver.  Quite frankly, he should be fired for this. read more

I am giving 5 stars because of their app. It is really fantastic. My trips in the past year have been very easy because of it. It's a breeze to book cabs, get assigned taxi number with driver's cellphone number (even 2 days ahead of time), get fixed rates for airports, and even pay through the app. The taxi drivers are always on or before time and friendly. I guess competition from Uber and Lyft has done wonders. read more
