If I could give zero stars, I would. They are unreliable and consistently do not show up at the scheduled pick up time. This morning I was picked up by a cab for my ride to the airport. The cab was 10 minutes late because he was lost, despite apparently having GPS. I had to call dispatch to find out where he was, at which time dispatch had the driver call me. Trying to give directions to the driver, he was extremely rude and uncooperative and hung up on me. I had to call dispatch again... The driver finally showed up and as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle he was combative and argumentative. I instructed him that I did not want to speak during the drive and to just take me to the airport. During this time, I was still on the phone with dispatch and dispatch instructed the driver that he was to stop speaking to me and just drive me to my location. The driver ignored my request and the instruction from his dispatcher and continued to be combative and trying to argue with me, and kept refusing to drive stopping in the middle of the road and slowing down on the interstate. I had to call dispatch a THIRD time because the driver would not stop and his driving was becoming reckless. Dispatch informed me that the head dispatcher texted him and from there he finally stopped yelling at me and drove normally to the location. Had I known that I would be subjected to such an assault, I would NOT have gotten into the cab. The cab was 466. read more

First of all, I have used Am Taxi for many years without problems--until my last trip. Reserved a taxi to pick me up at my home and take me to O'Hare. The taxi arrived. Driver put my suitcase into the trunk. About 5 minutes out, asked me if I was paying in cash or CC. I told him cash. Then, he said that he had no change. I replied, "Then, I'll pay by CC." He then said that he had no gas and no money for gas. I told him that, when we arrived at the gas station, I would get change and pay my fare. We got to the gas station. I tried to get out, but was locked in from the outside. He did let me out. I asked for my suitcase and went into the gas station because I was afraid of getting back into the cab with him. I honestly dont even know where to begin with this review. I think I will just give you a play by play. First a little background. I am a 30 year old male and I have lived in the Chicago area my whole life. I have taken hundreds if not thousands of cab rides over this time. American United was the company I would call if I ever wanted a cab to come pick me up at my condo. They were always reliable, and the drivers were nothing but friendly to me and my wife. That was until this past Saturday night. We called American United around 6pm on Saturday Jan. 7. We were going from my condo in uptown to Ruths Chris in river north. We were running late and I did not have time to get cash, and no one in our party had cash either. Here is how everything went down. I got into the cabs front seat and immediately asked him if he accepted credit card, knowing full well that they are actually legally obligated to accept credit card. I always like to ask because if they cant for some reason, I don't want to get to far before we figure out how we can pay. This is exactly how the conversation went. Me: Do you accept credit card? Driver: I do, but I would prefer cash. Me: Sorry, none of us actually have cash right now. Driver: You know because of that I will have to wait for 3 hours in a line to turn in this receipt. Me: Wow, it seems like there would be a better way to do that. Driver: Well, if people like you would just pay cash, I wouldn't have to worry about that. Me: Sorry, but I don't have any. Driver: You know, it would take us 2 minutes to stop at a F**KING ATM, so I don't have to wait 3 hours in line to turn the receipt in. This is when things went really south, I am not a violent person, but I also will not let people just walk all over me. I could also tell that this man was really getting out of control, he was driving really fast, and moving his arms in jerky motions towards me. I honestly thought I was going to have a physical altercation with him. My wife told me later that he was really close to me. I didn't really notice. Me: Well maybe if you were not such a D**K about it I would have stopped. I want to get out of the cab, pull over. Driver: F**K you, I am taking you to your destination Me: What is your name? Driver: My name is GO F**K your mother Me: Pull this cab over right now! He did finally pull over, and I asked him for his name again, and he told me to "Go F**K myself. This is when my wife said he was really close to me. We got out of the cab, and I was shaking. Later my wife told me that the drivers last name was Sotos, and the cab number was 6508. I really hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else, but if the reviews I am reading are any indication, nothing will be done about this either. I have left a message with the manager, I will update if anything comes of it. For now though, they have lost a customer for life. I just hope I don't end up in this guys cab ever again. read more

ABSOLUTLY HORRIBLE COMPANY I do not use taxi companies that often, but my God did this seal the deal on sticking with Uber and Lyft. I was asked to schedule a taxi for a guest at my place of work. She was traveling alone, with a baby and was from out of the country, aka she did not have a phone of her own to communicate. So I called American Taxi to get her a ride back to her hotel and they confirmed that they would pick her up ON TIME. We called an hour before she wished to be picked up, thinking this would help. BUT NO! After 15 minutes past the expected arrival time, we called again and scheduled an immediate taxi. They gave us a confirmation number and we waited. After another 15 minutes, not taxi. I called to confirm the number given and the machine stated there were no scheduled pickups at our location. Like seriously??? We then contacted her hotel and they came to pick her and the baby up. Absolutely embarrassing, stressful, and stupid situation. If you say you are going to be somewhere, be there. That's your fricken job..... read more

Needed a taxi for 2 to MDW airport. I called them up 2 days prior and booked a taxi. Next day, I tried to confirm, but no answer on their multiple phone numbers (live or automated). On travel day, I tried calling again and same, no answer... Not sure what's up with that. I sent them an email. The taxi did show up on time. It is a nice clean mini-van. The driver "Jack" was courteous and pleasant. After pick-up, I got an email reply back. Travel is already stressful, so not knowing if their taxi will show up or not only added more undue stress. I took 1 star away due to their lack of communications. But I'd probably use them again knowing that's how they work. read more

My experience was great- I created an online account for myself last night and booked a cab from Evanston to O'hare at 11pm, for an 11am pickup the next morning. They sent me a text to confirm my reservation with the price ($30) and that I could use a credit card. This morning I walked out of my building 5 minutes early to wait and they were already sitting there. The driver was courteous but not chatty, which I appreciate. I want to share an experience taking American taxi number 558 from Doubletree hotel downers grove IL to the Masala Fusion hotel nearby. The driver was quite rude. When I wished him and told him that I had called the cab, he didn't even care to reply. When I told him where I wanted to go, he didn't bother to reply and just got into the car. I asked him if he needed the adders and he didn't even acknowledge. During the ride I asked him if he had a business card for the cab company so I could call another cab to return to the hotel and he bluntly said no. When we reached the destination and I asked him how much I should pay he replied "how much ever you wish". Overall, very rude driver and one of the worst experiences for me in a cab. I will not be recommending the cab company to my colleagues anytime soon. read more

I would like to update my review for Candace in the complaints department. After receiving my online submission regarding this review, Candace followed up via email. She apologized and refunded my cab drive. She also stated they would talk with the driver to hear his side of the story. When brought in, he admitted to what he said. Candace followed up again to let me know that they put him on a high degree of supervision and any future complaint will result in dismissal from the company. Do not depend on American taxi to get you to the airport for a flight out. You risk missing your flight and having to re-schedule. I had reserved a taxi the day before from Winnetka to O'hare. Five minutes after they were supposed to arrive, I called American Taxi to check the status. The automated system recognized my phone number and said that the next taxi would be there to pick me up immediately. I waited a bit longer and then decided I should call back and talk to a human being. The man I talked to said they had no drivers available. I said, "But I booked yesterday, does that mean no one is coming to pick me up?" He said "Yes ma'am" and hung up. I couldn't believe it, so I called back again and they confirmed that they had no intention of coming to pick me up. No apologies whatsoever. It's one thing not to fulfill a reserved booking, but it's even worse that they didn't contact me to let me know they weren't coming. It's hard to get something else last minute. I will NEVER use this cab company again! I ordered a cab at 1:45pm for pickup at 3:25pm that day. After ordering the cab I received a confirmation text for the pickup. At 3:18 I received a text saying "sorry, no cab available your ride has been cancelled". What kind of cab company cancels pickup 5 minutes prior??? To top thigs off I called immediately and the guy was extremely rude. I asked to speak to a Manager and he put me into a general voicemail, showed no sympathy. Unfortunately, something has changed in the last month and today was the second time that they have not shown up for a confirmed appointment, making me late to the airport. American Taxi is fine for rides to and from the airport, but otherwise it is completely hit or miss. Unfortunately when you are depending on a taxi, they can never really be a "miss", otherwise you are completely stranded. I booked a pickup from a wedding on a Saturday night a few days in advance (suburb to suburb). The reservation was confirmed. 15 minutes after the pick-up time, still no ETA assigned. Called the dispatcher and they said no cab was assigned yet, they couldn't guarantee a cab would even come, and I would have to call back in 15 minutes for another update. Two words - eff that. We were picked up by an Uber driver within 10 minutes, for a cheaper price even with surge pricing. What's bizarre is our ride TO the wedding was fine - driver was on time, cab assigned 20 minutes prior to our trip, etc. Why have a fancy online reservation system if you can't honor the reservations? Ordered my cab to arrive at 5:00am for a 7:00 am flight. At 5:15 the driver called to tell me that he was on his way and would be :10 late. The dispatcher subsequently told me that there "was a shortage of cabs." I am not sure why they take orders they don't have the capacity to fill. I use American almost every week to get to and from the airport. i give it three stars since On the plus side most drivers are prompt and reliable, and the fairs are very reasonable; and some drivers are just really excellent ; but you will come across some that are just not suited for the job at all since they are terrible drivers or just should not be interfacing with the public..., so it can be random. so this is the overall 4 stars... On the negative., 1 or 2 stars; or maybe zero.....! is the complete lack of customer service...; it is almost impossible to get a real person on the line , if if you have an issue with a driver , by the time you get through their convoluted phone menu; and figure out the combination of numbers you will miss your flight or other appointment. ( i'm guessing this is on purpose).... My driver yesterday never showed up , it took a number of tries to get through to the dispatcher , who was in the end no help, I finally called an uber car which showed up right away. American taxi promised to raise the issue and call me back , which they never did...so this tells met they are clearly not concerned with or encouraging any kind of loyalty or customer service........ read more

Not a reliable service. Taxi didn't show up for a pickup to Ohare even though the automated system mentioned taxi 298 has been dispatched. This was my 2nd bad experience with the company - had a very rude driver (Taxi 293) on a previous occasion. Will never use the service again. read more

Now that they have the automated ordering system in place I couldn't be happier. I call from my cell and they already know it's me. They ask if I am at my regular address or somewhere else. If you call ahead, they arrive early. Rates are reasonable and the drivers are usually pleasant or mute. That's really all I ask for in a taxi service. read more

Zero stars. Cab #58 on April 6,2015 at 9:45pm was disgusting. The smell of body odor was overpowering. Made me sick. Drive understood no English so could not get window down. Driving on freeway was dangerously bad. Then pulling into my street he ran off the road and drove over some large stones that almost tipped the van over and roll over into the ditch. I have no idea why American Taxi has any poor reviews. Maybe it's because you live in a bufu suburb that no one wants to drive to. Honestly, I don't know because AT has been nothing but perfect for me. I recommend them to all my coworkers and basically anyone that needs a ride to the airport. Here's how I get what is apparently the optimal AT experience: Order a taxi ahead of time from their website. They recently changed the website to make it slightly less intuitive (I know). But once you explore a bit, you figure it out. The majority of the time, my cab rides are at 4am or 6am for my ungodly early flights. AT is ALWAYS on time or early. Some may find it creepy that there's a cab sitting in front of my house 15 minutes earlier than I need it to, but I find it comforting because the last thing I need is anxiety leading up to a 6am flight. On the way back from the airport: I have their dispatch number in my contacts. I pick up my bags from the baggage claim and call immediately after. The wait time has ranged anywhere from immediately to 15 minutes. 15 minutes has been rare and usually it's when I'm trying to get from Midway to Skokie, which I understand because it might be hard if a cabbie is based out of a specific area. Midway to Skokie is far. Generally, I pay cash because it's quicker. I only use AT to and from airports, so I can't comment on the taxi service for other uses. But this has been such a convenient, seamless way of traveling to and from the airport from the suburbs. Makes me kind of sad that I moved to Chicago because I can't take AT with me. read more

I booked a taxi to the airport for my wife and me a week in advance. It didn't show. I called and the dispatcher, who was barely intelligible, was completely unapologetic, explaining matter-of-factly "the driver was working on three orders." As I write this I'm on the way to the airport 27 minutes behind schedule. The driver was similarly unapologetic, simply barking "where to?" It remains to be seen whether we will catch our vacation flight. Stay away. read more

Super hit and miss - totally depends on the driver which is hard to control. I've used them twice. The first experience was pleasant and everything ran as expected. It wasn't amazing over the top customer service, but the driver was on time and took me where I was going. The second experience made me extremely uncomfortable - the driver hit on me during my ride to the airport, and then used my information to call me after I had gotten out of the car to hit on me some more. As a single woman traveling alone, I felt this was exceedingly unprofessional and I will likely not be using this service again. read more

I ordered a taxi for a specific time to O-Hare on their smart phone app. The taxi starts calling 10 minutes before the order time and harassing me about waiting - I told him he was early and we'd come out ASAP. I rush out with my family and see him driving off as I arrive. I tried calling him and he did not pick up. He later called and said he managed to find another fare. Several other American Taxi drivers were there who were unhelpful about calling for another taxi. I called and they stated that I had cancelled the taxi -- which was untrue! I told them I wanted to file a complaint and they forwarded me to a voice mailbox which did not respond. These guys have a high tech system, but the dispatch is very low tech. Furthermore, I found their dispatcher rude and the drivers unhelpful. read more

I called 25 minutes after the first call and the woman rudely basically told me they didn't have any idea when they were coming but worded it as 15-25 minutes minimum. When I asked if she knew where the cabs were she put me on hold and came back and said the same thing and then hung up. When I called back to ask more questions and say please don't hang up on me she immediately hung up again. This happened again and the again on the fourth call. It's over an hour and no cab has come. I have used American Taxi for many years. Recently, I ordered a taxi to O'Hare airport for my family 10 days before our travel date. Pickup time was 5:15 AM for a flight leaving just after 7 AM, but no taxi showed up. I called dispatch, and they indicated that there was a "shortage of cabs" in our area and could not tell me when they would send a cab. I had to call Niles Flash Taxi to rescue us. When I complained, the American Taxi representative said that they would send me coupons for a free taxi ride. Instead, they sent me coupons for $2 or $3 off our next taxi ride. Sad. read more
